INTRODUCTION

I-ON THIS MONTH It’s only September and already the dark nights are drawing in. I realise that, for most of you, this will be an unwelcome sign of the end of summer but I, for one, am thrilled. Finally, I can pack away the flimsy clothes and flip flops it was never really warm enough to wear anyway and get back into the cosy knits and chunky boots I feel far more at home in. Most excitingly, I have an actual valid reason to go shopping – and so do you. Not sure where to start? Discover all the must-have looks for the new season in our fashion special on page 42. Or, if it’s your home that needs a makeover rather your wardrobe, turn to page 56 for the latest interior trends and get ready to enjoy all those cosy nights in. One item that could help warm those chilly toes is a lovely new rug so we’ve teamed up with luxury Scottish brand ANTA to offer readers the chance

to win a pure wool flatwoven rug or carpet runner worth £595. Turn to page 12 to enter. Last month’s competition winner Julie Barclay will no doubt still be enjoying her prize - £600 worth of beauty products and pampering courtesy of Harvey Nichols. I’m guessing you’ll be looking way too hot to stay home, Julie. Fortunately, we’ve got your nights out covered this month too with some awesome reader events from a glamorous shopping evening at Coach (p27) to an exclusive launch party at The Ivy on the Square (p19). Hopefully I’ll see you there…(I’ll be the one sweating underneath all those new Autumn layers).

WE CAN’T WAIT TO… The i-on team shares their must-dos this month

1

…get into the groove “As soon as I found out Salt-N-Pepa (with Spindarella – that’s important), Vanilla Ice, Coolio and others are coming to town on 30 September for I Love the 90’s at The SSE Hydro, I got my gang together. I can’t wait to Push It, push it reeeaal good!” Tickets and more information at thessehydro.com. Amy Falconer, Account Director

2 10

…have a nosey “As the kind of ‘curious’ person who pokes through your medicine cabinet, I love a gawp at off-limits stuff so I can’t wait for Doors Open Days this month, in which heritage landmarks and the newest architecture opens their doors to the public (for free).” 11-17 September in Glasgow; 23-24 September in Edinburgh. Visit doorsopendays. org.uk for a list of buildings taking part including Stewart’s Melville College (pictured) Carine Seitz, Contributing Editor

3 …push the button “Ever dreamt of having a G&T delivered whenever the mood strikes you? Well now Brockmans Gin are making your boozy dreams come true with their ‘Press for Gin’ nights at Glasgow’s Oran Mor on 19-20 September. The concept is pretty simple: you press a button and gin appears. Bespoke cocktails and gin-infused food will also be served, and I’ll be there with bells on.” Tickets cost £22.25 from skiddle.com. Charlotte Hulme, Editorial Intern

NEWS

Going Up CURATED EARS That’s fashion-speak for lots-ofear-piercings. Decorating your ears with myriad studs, hoops and all the rest is the way forward. You heard it ear first (sorry).

4 …take in a show “I might not ever get to be in the same room as the real-life Ryan Gosling (gutted) but I’m pretty excited about the real live orchestra who will accompany my viewing of Oscar-winning musical La La Land later this month. And you could be too - if you snap up one of the few remaining tickets to the immersive cinematic event at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall on 27 September.” Tickets from £41.50 from usherhall.co.uk Amanda Southey, Business Development Manager

GETTING TO WORK ON TIME The festival is over for another year so no more gridlocked traffic, no more daily hangovers, no more being overwhelmed by the programme. Normality reigns (for now). PINK Our fascination with pink is going nowhere: the new season fashion and interiors collections are still blushing. St Andrews distillery Eden Mill even has a pink-tinged special edition Love Gin, so you can drink it too.

Barometer Going Down BROKEN ANKLES Yves Saint Laurent have outdone themselves in the silly stakes with their new stiletto roller skates. Yeah, really. Oh, and they’re a steal at only £1,995 a pair. SKINNY THIGHS Crolla’s ice cream parlour has opened on The Shore in Leith, so the i-on team is mainlining mint choc chip and raspberry ripple. We’ll all be wrapped up in winter coats by the end of the month anyway.

…have a shucking good time “Who said fish is for Fridays? I’d happily eat it every day, so a whole festival dedicated to the stuff is right up my alley. I’ll be at Festival of the Sea at The Briggait in Glasgow on 16 September for a feast of seafood and shellfish, all washed down with some whisky.” Tickets available from clydefishermantrust.com Paul Dickson, Creative Director

UNICORNS Unicorn weddings are the latest ridiculous craze for lovers of these mythical creatures. Enough already, we’re done.

Edith Bowman’s

Edinburgh The DJ and presenter on her favourite city haunts, where to get the best nachos in town and the capital’s thriving music scene

You’re from Anstruther but moved to Edinburgh for university – how do you remember your time here? I loved living in Edinburgh. I did a degree in Communications Studies at Queen Margaret College. I lived in Leith when a bit of money was starting to get spent on it – Malmaison had opened and The Shore had a really nice vibe. Then I moved to Lady Lawson Street and I could see the castle from my bedroom window, which was pretty special.

When you visit, where in Edinburgh do you like to go now? We were back for a wedding last year and my husband and I wandered through the Grassmarket and up Victoria Street and had a stunning meal up there. More recently, I’ve noticed St Andrew Square is becoming one of THE restaurant hubs in Edinburgh and we’re looking forward to eating at The Ivy on the Square when it opens this month. I also love a walk up Arthur’s Seat, it should be a wonder of the world. And I’ve had some fun nights up Calton Hill for the summer solstice. What’s the city’s best kept secret? Probably the music scene – just look at the recent success of Young Fathers. You only have to scratch the surface to find some great stuff.

16

photography Joseph Sinclair

Where did you hang out? I was doing work experience at a local radio station and afterwards, we used to go to Hectors in Stockbridge or The Basement on Broughton Street - they did the best nachos. The City Cafe was a great haunt too.

What does a typical day involve for you? I leave the house very early for my Breakfast Show on Virgin Radio. I normally finish there around 11am then sometimes I’ll have a screening, or an interview to do, or a meeting. Then it’s home to pick up the boys from school, make dinner, be an idiot dressing up and putting on silly voices for bedtime stories, and finally hang out with my other half. How did you end up doing what you do? Luck, good timing and persistence. That, and hard work. Radio really appealed to me so I wrote daily to the programme controller of the local station who eventually saw me, only to say he’d never put anyone on air with my accent. I wanted to prove him wrong so I’ve been very determined and stubborn ever since. You’re DJing at the launch of Edinburgh’s The Ivy on the Square. Do you have a go-to track when you’re playing? I never really plan a set as you can’t predict a crowd, so I like to arrive early and watch and listen. I want a bit of a Studio 54 vibe for The Ivy on the Square launch, so maybe some Donna Summer.

If you had to sum up Edinburgh in three words, what would they be? Romantic, historic, vigorous. The Ivy on the Square opens on 20 September. 6 St Andrew Square, EH2 2BD. theivyedinburgh.com. Edith’s weekly podcast Soundtracking can be found at edithbowman.com/soundtracking.

BOUTIQUE OF THE MONTH

We’re a little bit in love with the newly expanded Frontiers Woman boutique and here’s why…

ALL THE BEAUTIFUL COSY KNITS

Owned by knitwear designer Jane Forbes, it is perhaps no surprise that the store has a stunning range of designer knitwear. Quirky designs from Paul Smith sit alongside slouchy, rainbow-cuffed cashmere jumpers by WYSE London and soft raglan sweaters from Folk. And we’re mad about the cute beanies by Copenhagen streetwear brand Wood Wood.

THE CHICEST SELECTION OF WINTER COATS It’s probably the biggest investment you’ll make for your new season wardrobe so you need something that looks great and stands up to the cold. Step forward this camo-print beauty by Scandinavian label STAND. Or if that’s a bit too cool for school, check out the oversized check coat by luxe Italian label ottod’Ame or the navy wool Hepburn coat from Folk – both leaving plenty of room for layers underneath.

Hidden downstairs is the store’s most tempting department – a treasure trove of designer shoes where fashion-forward footwear like Hudson’s limited-edition Apisi Liberty velvet boots share space with classic choices like the G.H Bass & Co loafer collection, as well as on-trend styles from Penelope Chilvers, Ash, and Arkk Copenhagen. Can we have them all please? 16B Stafford St, EH3 7AU frontiersboutique.com

MEET THE MAKER Hamilton & Inches Master Jeweller Chay McLory talks shop

It was my dad who inspired me to become a goldsmith. He was in the trade and took me to see a jewellery college when I was just 15. Two years later, I decided to follow in his footsteps and give it a go. I moved to Edinburgh from Kent a few years ago to take up my role at Hamilton & Inches. It wasn’t a hard decision, I had visited the city before and fallen in love with it. My job is definitely never boring. I make bespoke pieces and have created some weird and wonderful pieces of jewellery. Every day brings a new challenge. Designing engagement rings is a responsibility I really enjoy. Working with the customer to create something that they will wear for a lifetime is a great feeling. I particularly love Victorian-style jewellery. There is a lot of time, patience and effort involved in creating these pieces. Modern pieces tend to lack that level of intricacy. Jewellery is such a personal thing. What makes one person happy will be different to the next, but as long as you enjoy wearing it, it doesn’t matter. The most important thing is to actually wear it — jewellery shouldn’t be hidden in a drawer. If you’re interested in Chay creating a bespoke piece of jewellery for you, visit hamiltonandinches.com to find out more or Tel. 0131 225 4898.

HOLIDAY AT HOME Formerly The Roxburghe, The Principal Edinburgh Charlotte Square has just reopened after a £25 million refurb by the same team who recently transformed The George Hotel. Expect elegant suites kitted out in heritage fabrics with cosy fireplaces, retro details and stunning city views across Charlotte Square Gardens. Keep your eyes peeled too for the opening of in-house restaurant BABA next month, offering Eastern-inspired cuisine from the chefs behind Glasgow’s popular Ox and Finch restaurant. The best news? Now the festival crowds have left town, you might actually get a table. theprincipalhotel.com/Edinburgh-CS

GLASGOW TAKE THREE things to do this September

tiers of joy Tea? Nah. Tracey McCallum finds her kind of afternoon spread at Malmaison Glasgow Probably one of the most indulgent afternoon teas in the city, The Classic at Malmaison is a snip at £10 but if, like me, you’re ‘all in’, then the Cocktail option is the way to go at £25 per person. Feeling naughty we skipped the speciality teas and went straight to the fun part with a Negroni and a Bad Boy Good Girl. With the party started, we devoured the mini Mal burgers and a selection of wraps. A welcome change from finger sandwiches. The sweet treats ramped up the wow factor with generous portions of salted caramel brownie, strawberry pavlova, rhubarb fool, pistachio and raspberry cake, warm scones with cream and jam, and the cutest little bottles of frozen berry milkshake. Book online at malmaison.com.

Visit the Moxie vintage sale pop-up in Princes Square on Sunday 03 September, 12-6pm, and discover some pre-loved designer bargains ranging from £5-£50. Every purchase supports the Scottish based epilepsy charity, the Muir Maxwell Trust. Get on your bike and take part in The Classic Challenge Glasgow to Edinburgh event on 10 September 2017. Join over 6,500 other cyclists on the starting line at Glasgow Green for a real show of pedal power. Enter at pedalforscotland.org. Eat, drink and get merry at the Big Feed Street Social on 23 and 24 September in Govan. It’s Glasgow’s biggest indoor street food market, it’s family friendly and you’re guaranteed to sample something you’ve never had before. £2 entry on the door. Under 10s go free.

Advice for others trying to breakthrough in the industry? Get a proper job, you’ll age a lot slower.

Kenny Inglis’

Glasgow

What’s your favourite area of Glasgow? I love the West End’s warmth and vibrance.

The music producer and composer talks music venues, Hollywood, and premature ageing

When and why did you move to Glasgow? I grew up in Bishopton and moved to Glasgow in 2004 to relocate my studio. I live in Park Circus – it’s so peaceful, you forget you’re in a city. Have you always wanted to work in music? I left school and got a job in a record shop, where a guy had a mixing desk. I learned to record a synth part, stick a bassline and drums under it and mix it all. I was blown away. Eventually, I got a grant and started my own studio. Breakthrough moment? Chicago label Guidance signed me after I demoed some tracks. I then got a call from HBO to use my music in Six Feet Under… I’ve since written for US TV shows including CSI, The O.C, Sex In The City and Nikita. I also do Hollywood trailers – I did the trailer for the forthcoming Fifty Shades Freed film. Why not live somewhere like LA? LA is amazing, but has a falseness. Glasgow gives me creative edge. Best and worst things about your job? Best: landing a Hollywood trailer or primetime drama. I’m most proud of BBC documentary The Bridge (for which I won a BAFTA), and working with Spike Lee. The city’s best kept secret; versus the stuff you’d change: The best bits are the spaces that exist underneath the city: old train tunnels to labyrinths of basements. In terms of change I’d like more help for the homeless please.

Describe the local music scene? Vibrant and diverse: from new bands and big headliners, to a plethora of house, techno, dub, reggae and electronic nights. Unsupported musicians and bands are the creative fabric of Glasgow. Favourite venue to play in? The G12 has a huge cinema screen and the soundsystem is amazing, while the 13th Note has a grittiness other venues lack. Most likely to… win an Olivier award

ISIS HAINSWORTH At school in Edinburgh, Isis used to daydream of performing on the London stage – fast forward a little and the 19-year-old actress is receiving rave reviews for her West End debut.

The show had originally debuted in Edinburgh in 2015 - were you surprised when you were invited to join the cast for the West End production? I still can't believe it happened, it was the most amazing experience. I was so terrified when I started because it was all so new and different but everyone was lovely and welcoming and made me feel at home.

36

What were the stand out moments? Our opening night will stay with me forever – after doing such intense work on the show, it's mind blowing when you finally perform it and people love it. How did you find living in London? London is cool, but it takes some getting used to. The transport in particular is very different to Edinburgh – I had quite a few stressful journeys to work! What have we seen you in other than Our Ladies? I played Maddy in the BBC drama One of Us, and Vivienne Watt in the ITV drama In Plain Sight.

What are your future ambitions? Hollywood? I’d love to do more theatre, but screen stuff would be amazing. Jobs with strong characters, that I believe in and feel good about. Do you have advice for other aspiring actors? Take every opportunity you get, whether it's drama at school or youth theatre, just keep acting.   Who inspires you most? My mum and dad are both so incredibly supportive of me. I think a lot of parents might tell you to be more realistic if you tell them you want to act, but they did everything they could to help me.   Favourite school memories? I hated school. I just used to sit at the back of class quietly seething!

photography Alan Howard

How did you become an actress? I originally wanted to be a ballet dancer, then when I did drama at school, it cemented that performing was what I wanted to do so I joined two youth theatres – Strange Town Youth Theatre and Lothian Youth Arts & Musicals Company – and did auditions which led to me getting the part in Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour.

“I hated school. I just used to sit at the back of class quietly seething!”

photography Solus Productions Ltd and Alan Peebles Photography

How were you discovered? A casting agent for a Knife Crime Scotland short film spotted me at school when I was 16. She sent my pictures to Michael O’Brien at Model Team who called me and asked to meet me there and then – I thought he was joking at first. What was your first modelling gig? An editorial shoot for GQ. I was in Maths when Michael called to tell me I had to go to the shoot there and then. So I was like “Er, Miss, I need to go to London…” It was weird but great fun. You’ve been described as “uglybeautiful”. Is it strange hearing people talk about your face the way they do? Totally weird at first but I’ve got used to it. People see things in my face that I’ve never seen. Do you ever have to stop and pinch yourself? It’s all very surprising how fast things have moved. It still feels strange that I’m a model. I couldn’t even afford to buy Stone Island and now I’m on their billboards in Times Square.

“I was in Maths when my agent called saying I had to get straight to a shoot for GQ. I was like "Er, Miss, I need to go to London" What have been the stand out moments of your career so far? Shooting for Dsquared2 then doing a catwalk show on the same day in Milan. Afterwards, I partied with Paris Hilton – she asked me for a selfie and then turned around and smacked the lips on me! What was it like the first time you saw your face on the cover of a magazine? I was walking past a newspaper stall in Duomo Square in Milan and saw myself on the cover of L’Officiel Hommes. I got goosebumps, I felt like I was dreaming.

What are the best and worst things about your job? I’ve got one of the best jobs in the world but it’s hard work and the days can be long. The best bit is working with great brands and meeting so many interesting people. The worst is all the travel and flying – it can be lonely. What do you miss most about home when you’re away? My girlfriend, friends, family, dogs, and my mum’s cooking. I also miss the accent – and not having to speak slowly to be understood! You were recently the subject of a BBC TV show called Scotland’s Model Teenager – was it surreal seeing yourself on TV? Probably the most exciting part was the buildup and waiting for it to air. People recognise me in the street now which is weird! Were you a class rebel or a goodytwo-shoes at school? A bit of both. More rebel. Scotland’s Model Teenager is available to watch on iPlayer until mid-September.

Most likely to… steal Taylor Swift’s crown nina nesbitt Following the success of her debut album Peroxide, Balerno-born Nina Nesbitt hit the headlines for dating fellow musician Ed Sheeran but these days, it’s her music that’s got everyone talking again - and rightly so!

Your debut album Peroxide charted at no.11 in the UK – how did that make you feel? The best part was doing HMV signings around the country because I got to see real life people buying my album. Your signature long blonde locks have been replaced with a blunt brunette bob - what inspired the radical overhaul? I just fancied a change and it also marks a clear difference between Peroxide and my new music. Also, bleaching my hair used to take about 5 hours! How has your sound evolved? I've grown up and my music has naturally followed. It's still pretty stripped

38

back and lyrically honest but I've listened to more varied types of music since the last album. People and places inspire me so living in London has influenced the sound too. There’s been a lot of buzz about your new single, The Moments I’m Missing. What’s it about? It refers to the moments from my life that are missing from my memory. In this fast-paced world, it's hard to take things in and appreciate them at the time.   How do you go about songwriting? Do you follow a certain process? It depends. My favourite songs have always started with a strong lyrical idea. There's a poppier influence to the choruses now, I think more about melody than before.

“My schoo/mates probably thought I’d turn into a crazy cat lady!” Any advice to other aspiring singers? Practice as much as you can and find something that sets you apart you from others. You supported Justin Bieber at Hyde Park in July - that must have been pretty exciting? It was one of the first shows where I played my new music so I was nervous, but the crowd were great. What do you think your peers at school thought you’d end up doing? They probably thought I’d turn into a crazy cat lady.

photography Alex Lake

What was your big break? I started posting videos on YouTube when I was 15 and a number of things happened off the back of that. A chance meeting with Ed Sheeran after a gig in 2011 led to me supporting him on his European tour.

Most likely to… take home an Oscar

christy o'donnell Most young actors struggle for years before they get anywhere near a film set. Not Glasgow actor/musician Christy O’Donnell, whose debut movie recently won Best Feature Film at an LA film festival.

How did you become an actor? Watching movies as a child gave me an indescribable feeling, and I wanted to do the same for others. I didn't get the grades to go to drama school so I studied films. Watching my favourite actors on screen was my training. What was your big break? I wanted to do more acting so I signed with a London agent and got the script for Moon Dogs. It’s the coming-of-age story of two stepbrothers who run away from Shetland to Glasgow in search of self-discovery. They meet a rebellious girl who joins them, but when both boys develop feelings for her it all starts to unravel. I connected very strongly with my character Thor, and happily, was cast. You’ve been hard at work promoting the movie – any stand out moments? The American premier was at the Newport Beach Film Festival in LA

“I didn’t get the grades to go to drama school – watching my favourite actors on screen was my training” where we won the Jury Award for Best Feature Film, and Jack ParryJones (who plays Michael) won the Jury Award for Best Actor.

British soldier serving in Afghanistan in James Kermacks' Knuckledust, about an underground fight club. I'm excited to get army fit for that one.

Irvine Welsh said “not one, not two, but three stars are born in this beautiful movie". How did that feel? Positive reaction from anyone is great, but from such an acclaimed writer, it was certainly a highlight. I had the privilege of meeting him at the Edinburgh International Film Festival closing ceremony and he’s a genuine, down-to-earth guy.

Advice for other aspiring actors? When you see your peers doing well, it’s easy to think you’ll never get there, but it's down to hard work and perseverance. Focus, believe in yourself, work hard and it will happen.

What will we see you in next? I've been filming a TV show in Paris for the Disney Channel called Find Me In Paris. I’m also going to be playing a

Most likely to… perform with Andrea Bocelli

CIARA HARVIE

Classical crossover singer Ciara wowed audiences on The Voice and has since gone on to sing at Moscow’s State Conservatory. Not bad for a 19-year-old lass from Longniddry.

When and how did you discover your voice? I saw Jackie Evancho sing O Mio Babbino Caro on America's Got Talent five years ago and found it so inspiring. I was too shy to sing in front of anyone though so I recorded myself and played it to my parents – they didn’t believe it was me at first! How long have you been performing? A year after discovering my voice, I got to the final of Edinburgh's Got Talent at The Festival Theatre that was five years ago and even though I was just 15, I knew then that performing was definitely what I wanted to do. We were on the edge of our seats watching you on The Voice – tell us about your experience? I felt so lucky just being part of the show, and singing in a television studio with a live audience and judges. It was a very long process: my first audition was in July last year, I was up and down to London and Manchester, and it was finally broadcast in February. But it was all a very valuable experience.

40

“I love to sing for people who don’t normally enjoy classical music, especially people my age who usually listen to chart music” Has The Voice changed things for you? It’s given me a new confidence. Having singers like Jennifer Hudson and Tom Jones praise my performance meant so much. And the support on social media was mind blowing. You spent time in Moscow recently for the Russia Art-Football Festival. What was it like performing at the Moscow State Conservatory? It was the first time I’d sung with an actual orchestra. It felt amazing representing the UK with classical singers and musicians from around the world. Who do you most admire musically? I take a lot of inspiration from Katherine Jenkins because she’s one

of the few female classical crossover singers to have 'made it' in the industry. And my ultimate ambition would be to duet with my favourite singer Andrea Bocelli. What can we expect next from you? I'd like to release a classical-crossover album with a contemporary twist. I love to sing for people who don’t normally enjoy classical music, especially people my age who usually listen to chart music. It’d be amazing to do something with (Britain's Got Talent winner) Tokio Myers. What was your favourite subject at school? I loved French. I wanted to study it at university before I settled on a career in singing.

FEATURES

How did you get into the industry? I’ve wanted to sing for as long as I can remember. At high school, I was the wee chubby guy who was crap at P.E. but could hold a tune. When I turned 18, I met my managers and things started to happen.    Your debut single Bruises hit 15 million worldwide streams in 10 weeks. Did you anticipate this level of success? Absolutely not. It was the first properly recorded piece of music I put out, and was meant to be for people to find online if they had seen me playing. Now, I’m just trying to keep up the momentum by writing more songs!

“At high school, I was the wee chubby guy who was crap at P.E. but could hold a tune” As well as other UK dates, you’ve got a sold-out Glasgow gig in September. How does it feel playing to a home crowd? I’m buzzing about it! I’ve been recording in Germany and the USA, so I’m looking forward to playing in front of people again. I love touring, playing live is definitely my favourite part of all of this. TRNSMT was easily the best gig I’ve played - for that many people come out to see me off the back of two songs was absolutely insane.

Most likely to… headline Coachella

lewis capaldi How many singer songwriters can boast an audience with a Nashville producer, a sell-out tour and a spot at Glasgow’s newest music festival off the back of two songs released online? Singer songwriter Lewis certainly can.

You recently spent time in Nashville recording and writing. How was that? I was working with a producer called Jacquire King, who’s worked at lot with Kings Of Leon. They are some of my favourite artists so it was surreal to have that opportunity and to have it in a city that’s so rooted in music.  What has been the response to your new single Lost On You? The number of messages I get on a daily basis from people telling me how much they love it, or that they’ve just heard it in a shop or found it online, is honestly unbelievable. Advice to other aspiring singers/songwriters? Write songs, play as much as possible and don’t give up. I started playing my tunes when I was twelve so I’d been at it for eight years before I got anywhere. What can we expect next from you? I’ll definitely be releasing more music before the end of the year. What was your least favourite subject at school?  That’s easy – Maths.

TRIED AND TESTED

THE METHOD Carrie Mitchell takes some much-needed time out at a new city sanctuary

S

lowing down isn’t something that comes naturally to me so I’m surprised how quickly I relax when I set foot in The Method, a new lifestyle store and massage therapy space on St Stephen Street in Stockbridge. Of course, that’s no accident – brother and sister duo Dan and Jodi Fox have carefully designed their joint wellbeing project to be a soothing escape from the world outside. From the wooden parquet flooring, limed oak shelves and marble counters to the expertly curated beauty and lifestyle products (all amber bottles, gleaming tin, and exclusive niche brands), every detail in the store is a seamless blend of natural materials and modern minimalist style. Having previously worked as a therapist at Neal’s Yard, Jodi now presides over the massage therapy space in the basement. Much like upstairs, everything down here is designed to soothe the senses from the concrete flooring and gleaming white metro tiles to the Scandi-style furnishings and flickering wall of candlelight (soon to be replicated in my own bedroom). I was booked in for 60-minute session with Jodi which she explained could be spent exactly how I pleased. Rather than booking a set ‘treatment’, clients are advised to book a timeslot then decide on the day what they need. It’s a clever approach that offers a bespoke experience whether you’re looking for a relaxing massage or a rejuvenating facial. However, if it’s a high-tech cosmetic effect you’re after, move along – The Method’s focus is founded upon Ayurvedic and therapeutic techniques so you’ll certainly emerge feeling lighter, brighter and more balanced but you won’t walk away with the dubious promise of shedding pounds or wrinkles.

52

AS I SANK DEEPER INTO A STATE OF BLISS, THERE WAS JUST ONE NAGGING ANXIETY REMAINING IN MY MIND – NAMELY, THAT I MIGHT FALL ASLEEP AND MISS THE ACTUAL MASSAGE”

After a chat, Jodi and I decided a destressing full body massage was the way forward and she invited me to lie back so she could begin with a meditative introduction. As I sank deeper into a state of bliss, there was just one nagging anxiety remaining in my mind – namely, that I might fall asleep and miss the actual massage. Thankfully that didn’t happen and I felt every knot and ounce of tension drain from my body in Jodi’s capable hands. It was all over too soon but before I left, Jodi took the time to talk me through the areas of tension she’d felt and how I could adjust my habits to reduce stress in my body. It was a genuine and thoughtful way to end the session (much more so than the sales pitch that so often comes at the end of a spa treatment) and one that simply made me more sure I’ll return - whether that be for a massage, shopping trip, or simply more interiors inspiration. Treatments at The Method cost from £35 for 30 minutes. To find out more, visit themethod.life or Tel. 0131 225 4700.

A NEW WAY TO LIVE

IKEA introduces inspirational and interactive new spaces to design your living room in store

I

KEA Edinburgh and Glasgow this month announced the launch of their new living rooms departments, as a part of a country wide project to change the way in which living rooms are presented in their stores. In a move to create a more interactive and inspirational shopping experience, customers can now look forward to features like a design hub, where they can take inspiration from a wide range of provided materials and lifelike room settings which stimulate the senses with evocative sounds and smells. For many people in the UK, the living room is the most important room in the home. It’s both a public and personal room where we spend time with friends and loved ones and also the place where we go to relax and escape the rigours of everyday life. “The living room is the heart of everyday life at home,” explains IKEA Glasgow Store Manager, Helen Aylett. “It is a room for connecting with family and welcoming friends, celebrating special occasions,

reminding us what matters in life. It is also a reflection of our personalities, a place to show who we are and what makes us happy. This is the room that we share with more people than any other room in our home and where we want to feel secure, warm and comfortable, whether we are alone or together with others. At IKEA, we can create an individual expression for the needs and dreams of our customers, by bringing together smart solutions with comfort and style.” The most visible change in the department is within the room settings which have been brought to life in their realism, incorporating features like ceilings, outdoor spaces and bay windows. Grouped into “neighbourhoods”, one gets a sense that you are walking down a street gazing into genuine living rooms. The purpose of this is to create an emotional connection with the viewer, to inspire them to consider the possibilities within their own homes. IKEA Edinburgh Store Manager, Innes Ritchie explained the significance of the changes in his store for people living in the city: “We’ve introduced lots more inspiration, which is more relevant to people living in the local area and have been able to showcase a greater number of solutions which can improve the everyday life of our customers in particular. Our new department is now an environment where we can work together with our customers to co-create a living room specific to their individual needs and vision.” One of the key features of the new department is the inclusion of a purpose built creative space in which customers can browse a range of materials from magazines, to be inspired by current trends, to textiles and sofa fabrics to bring their visions to life. Customers are even able to create their own personal mood board, which they can print off to take home or that they can share with IKEA staff, in order to create their own dream living room. So if you’re ready to transform the heart of your home, get yourself along to IKEA for inspiration today.

MUSIC

"I WAS A BIT TOO SHY FOR MY OWN LIKING, I'VE LEARNED TO BE LESS SCARED OF EVERYTHING"

1

AFTER THE DECLARATION AND THE SMOKIE, SHE’S ONE OF ARBROATH’S MOST FAMOUS EXPORTS “I was born in Arbroath, so I’m a ‘smokie’,” says Glasgow-based Siobhan, whose new album There Are No Saints is a dusky collection of grown-up ballads which is gathering support and acclaim. “I grew up in Elgin, where I had really inspiring cello and piano teachers, they shaped the way I thought about music and life and encouraged me to play.” More than once on the record, the classically-trained musician sings in fluent French. “I’m always learning something in my spare time - French, music theory, piano. I listen to a lot of audiobooks.”

{ 4

2

SHE’S A YOUNG ARTIST, BUT HER ALBUM IS BORN OF A LIFETIME OF EXPERIENCE “It was my favourite collection of songs to record to date, because I’ve learned to be less scared of everything,” says Wilson, who used to go by the alias Ella the Bird. “I was a bit too shy for my own liking before and my EP Glorified Demons is the only older record I can listen to.” The new album is in part a response to her own heartbreak and depression: “Making music is a high, the lows of doing it are difficult to describe because they can't compare to other terrible things in life,” she explains. “Happily, the only thing I have to complain about right now is that I want there to be more women in music.”

3

THE NEW RECORD IS ON THE ROSTER OF ONE OF SCOTLAND’S BEST INDEPENDENT LABELS The Leith-based Song, By Toad have a strong track record of supporting outstanding artists, and Wilson’s name can be added to the likes of Meursault and Modern Studies. “They have good taste in music,” she says. “The other artists on the label are genuine about music and they’re all a really good bunch of nice human beings.”

THE RIGHT PEOPLE ARE STARTING TO TAKE NOTICE OF HER Wilson’s had Album of the Day on BBC 6 Music and she won the Green Man Rising contest, earning a slot at the Brecon Beacons festival last month. “Playing Green Man will be the big highlight,” she says, speaking before it happened. “It’s a main stage at a festival and I'm excited. The festival owner and director, Fiona Stewart, is introducing me which is pretty epic – she set up the festival singlehandedly 15 years ago and has since won Outstanding Achievement to UK Festivals and Best Festival awards, so she’s an inspiring woman.

}

5

THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING “I’ve started writing my next album,” she tells us. “It sounds like Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil and Sharon Van Etten. I made a playlist of all the stuff I'm listening to just now if you want to check it out on Spotify, it's called T H O S E B E A U T I F U L S O U N D S. In the future, I want to see Japan, spend some time living in caravans in Scotland, pass my driving test - I’ve been trying for ten years – and get a Masters. Those are the challenging things, the songwriting bit will be okay.” Siobhan Wilson plays the Voodoo Rooms, Edinburgh on 24 September as part of a UK tour. STEAK NIGHT O

ne of the classics, this is a dish that will never go out of fashion,” says the Michelin star chef. “If you’re looking for a treat or to impress someone, this is at the top of my list. Whenever I make this recipe, I look forward to the moment when the steaks get returned to the pan and covered in sauce. At that point, I just know how good the dish is going to taste.”

Edinburgh chef Tom Kitchin reveals his favourite recipe for peppered fillet steaks

FOOD AND DRINK

Serves 4 Ingredients 2 tablespoons black peppercorns 1 teaspoon white peppercorns 1 teaspoon pink peppercorns 4 fillet steaks, about 220g each olive oil 2 tablespoons finely chopped shallots 50ml brandy 200ml double cream knob of butter, diced 1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley 1 teaspoon wholegrain mustard (I use Pommery) 1 teaspoon brined green peppercorns, drained and rinsed sea salt freshly cracked black pepper, optional Method 1. Using a pestle and mortar, crush the black, white and pink peppercorns gently. Place the crushed pepper in to a sieve and shake off any excess powder, keeping just the crushed peppercorns. Season the steaks all over with the crushed peppercorns, patting them in with your hands so they stick, then season with salt. 2. Heat a large well-seasoned sauté or frying pan over a high heat, then add a drizzle of oil. When it is hot, add the steaks and fry them for 3–4 minutes on each side until well coloured. This should give you medium-rare meat, which is how I like my steaks, but fry them for a bit longer if you like. Set aside to rest on a plate with a rim for 5 minutes, covered with kitchen foil, while you make the sauce. 3. Add the shallots to the oil remaining in the pan and sauté for 1–2 minutes until softened, but not coloured. Add the brandy, stirring to deglaze the pan, and boil until it evaporates. You can flambé the pan if you’re feeling adventurous, but it’s not necessary. Add the cream and bring to the boil, then add the cooking juices that have accumulated while the steaks were resting. 4. As the sauce thickens whisk in the butter, then add the parsley, mustard and green peppercorns. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper, if necessary. Add the steaks to the pan and baste them in the sauce, then serve.

PROPER PIZZA We check out the newest openings from two of our favourite city restaurants

PAESANO PIZZA WEST END Amanda Southey has a slice of authenticity at the second branch of Glasgow’s most popular pizza place

M

y family are pizza fanatics and the more we eat, the more we know what we like. Forget deep dish American styles, for us, a slice should be as authentic as possible, which is why we were thrilled when we stumbled across the new West-end branch of popular family-run restaurant Paesano – who pride themselves on traditional Napoletana pizza made with the freshest Italian ingredients: Strianese San Morzano tomatoes from Sarno in Campania, creamy mozzarella di bufala from Mondragone in Campania, extra virgin olive oil from Lanciano in Abruzzo...our mouths were watering at the very thought. Formerly a bank, the restaurant is large and airy with a cool Art Deco vibe and laid back atmosphere. There's a similar lack of fuss when it comes to the menu, which offers around ten pizzas alongside some simple side dishes.

“THE SOFT SOURDOUGH BASE AND MOLTEN TOPPINGS LEFT US IN A BIT OF A MESS BUT WATCHING MY TODDLER SUCK UP THE MOZZARELLA WAS HALF THE FUN”

For the main event, I chose the Spianata spicy salami pizza, £7; hubby ordered the fresh Tuscan fennel sausage with wild broccoli, £8; and the wee one had the simple tomato sugo with mozzarella, £6. We added a couple of sides - artichokes and sun blushed tomatoes; and rocket and parmesan salad, both £3 - a lovely accompaniment to our juicy pizzas, which went down a treat. The soft sourdough base and molten toppings left us in a bit of a mess but watching my toddler suck up the mozzarella was half the fun. She was delighted by the open kitchen too, where we could see the chefs hard at work by the real woodfired ovens. But the biggest smile (hers and mine) was of course reserved for dessert – no fancy puddings here, just the proper whippy icecream of my childhood, served with a choice of toppings or wafers. We opted for one to share (they're huge) covered in raspberry sauce and chocolate flakes, £4. And what a way to end a fabulous lunch. Keeping it simple is certainly paying off at Paesano. 471 Great Western Rd, Glasgow G12 8AB. Tel: 0141 370 0534. paesanopizza.co.uk

CIVERINOS SLICE Charlotte Hulme super-sizes her appetite at Civerinos’ new American-style neighbourhood pizza bar

A

rriving on a Saturday evening during the opening weekend of the Fringe, it’s no surprise that we find the restaurant in full fast-paced glory. Fortunately the crowds just added to the fun atmosphere created by the colourful décor and retro 80s vibe. Starting off with a carafe of crisp rose, £10, we debate whether to indulge our innerpigs with a full-size pie or stick to a slice. With six to seven choices of slice per day, the restaurant is popular with those looking for a quick bite but we’re in no hurry so we opt instead for 20 inches of doughy heaven. Luckily we’re saved from the impossible task of having to choose just one topping by the half and half option, going for half Love Me Better (£4.80 a slice or £21 for a 20 inch pizza) with gorgonzola, nduja, red onion, garlic, parsley and sundried cherry tomatoes and half Pineapple Controversy (£5.20/£24), featuring the tropical fruit alongside sugo, pork shoulder, mozzarella and rocket. Being a bit of a pizza purist, I’ve always been reluctant to eat pineapple on a pizza, and owner Michele assured me I wasn’t the only one with pineapple prejudices - he’d only recently been tempted over to the fruity side by an experimental chef and a great recipe. I’m so glad we trusted his judgement as I am now firmly in the pro-camp of the Pineapple Controversy. Our pizza was flavourful and cooked perfectly, while the toppings were punchy on the palette but far from overbearing. Side dishes range from house salads to spicy pork meatballs but we opted for the polenta chips, £5, with basil, sugo and parmesan - light and herby and just right to go with our pizza choices.

“WE DEBATE WHETHER TO INDULGE OUR INNER-PIGS WITH A FULL-SIZE PIE OR STICK TO A SLICE” We just about managed to polish off 80% of the meal and had the leftovers boxed up to take home. Sadly, we were too full to embark upon the epic-sounding desserts (but I shall return soon for a Nutella Civerinos calzone). Instead, we washed down our feast with a glass each of the Civerino’s slush of the day, frosé, which, if you haven’t guessed already, is a frozen take on rose and just as delicious the perfect palette cleanser and pick-me-up before heading back out to festival madness. 49 Forrest Road, EH1 2QP. FOOD AND DRINK

B

runch; a portmanteau of breakfast and lunch, best enjoyed, in my opinion, with time on your side as a big family gathering or with a group of friends. If the proceedings - and drinks - flow into the afternoon it’s my favourite kind of social get together (no babysitters required, no sleep deprived mornings after…) and when the subject of a round robin email is ‘Who’s up for brunch’, you can count me in. Recently, I’ve found my favourite spot when I feel like really going to town. Gleneagles has brunch down to a fine art. Their new Brunch on Sundays at The Birnam Brasserie is a heady mix of brunch of a bygone era with a 21st century twist. The divine menu features all the iconic brunch classics such as eggs Benedict, moules marinière and steak ‘n’ egg pommes frites; alongside

BRUNCH REDEFINED Laura Wood discovers the ultimate Sunday brunch destination at Gleneagles Hotel

sandwiches including the irresistible Croques Monsieur and Madame, and a jaw-dropping self-serve Cold Bar stacked with shellfish, seafood, cheese, charcuterie and salads (it’s so good, I had to visit several times). Best of all, alongside the cold bar is a bar bar where you can help yourself to mimosas and bloody marys. You certainly won’t want to have the car with you so plan ahead and call the concierge to take advantage of a complimentary chauffeur service to and from the train station. Add to all this live music, the beautiful Winter Garden, kids playing outside (maybe croquet on the lawn), adults talking, laughing and indulging until you can indulge no more, and Brunch at The Birnam gives a whole new meaning to long, lazy Sunday afternoons. Brunch is served from 12noon until 4pm and costs from £40 per person. Children under 12, £20. Under-fives go free. To book, visit gleneagles.com/dine-drink/birnambrasserie or Tel. 01764 694 270.

TAKE T O T HE S T REE T S

“I’m a teacher, and once asked my class to help with an ‘emu parade’. Much to their disappointment, that’s what us Aussies call a group of people picking up litter – bending, or ‘emu bobbing’ as they go.” Sally White.

“On a school trip to Brussels, one teacher tried to get all the students drunk in her room.” Scott Smith.

To celebrate the start of the new school term, we asked some Edinburgh festival-goers for their favourite teacher tales

BIT AT THE BACK

“We had a crazy maths teacher who I think lived in his classroom – he had a microwave and kettle in there.” Matt Purnell and Juliette Arsenault.

“In 1st year we were terrified of the football coach but by 6th year we loved him. Thanks to him we won the football league so we honoured him with a shower of Irn Bru.” Thabani Patty.

“My chemistry teacher once got caught being rude with the maths teacher in a cupboard.” Malachy Gilchrist.

“I was good at art but my teacher didn’t believe my homework was my own. I’m a successful tattoo artist now so maybe that’s finally enough proof.” Tom Tamthasuriya.

“We’re identical twins, so we wore hairbands with our names on to tell us apart. We drove teachers crazy by swapping them.” Sarah and Charlotte.

“I had a teacher who once cycled to school wearing all the gear, and got so much stick he cycled straight back home to change.” Ben Small.

BIT AT THE BACK

I WAKE UP... When my son Leo decides it’s time – he’s my alarm clock! My mini Australian labradoodle, Skye, comes up the stairs for snuggles while I’m waking up with coffee in bed, then I’ll usually go for a run or workout with my PT. With setting up the business, exercise has taken a back seat for the last couple of years but I’m on a mission to get fit again now. WORK STARTS... My office is at home so I’ll often eat breakfast – a muffin or porridge - at my desk while checking emails and catching up on online orders that have come in overnight. Peak online shopping time for customers seems to be while browsing before bed! MY ROLE... As founder and creative director, I pretty much oversee the girls in the office who handle online orders and customer enquiries via our website. I also

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF… Anna Atwal, founder of Pad Lifestyle boutique

handle curation and oversee styling in the store. I have a great team both in store and in the office which helps me get on with product sourcing, finances and the website. BEST PART OF THE JOB... I love working with so many inspiring designers and amazing products, plus I get to travel a lot. Running a business is exciting but if there is one downside, it has to be the pressure you put on yourself - it’s pretty much 24/7.

82

CAREER HIGHLIGHT... Securing our Jonathan Adler account. I was so excited I nearly fell off my chair when the email came through. AFTER HOURS... I stop work around 5pm when Leo is home from school then I’ll make his dinner and rustle up something healthy like a chicken and avocado salad for myself (as I’m on get fit mode). LIGHTS OUT... I’m usually ready to conk out at 10pm but inevitably end up on my phone until midnight, reading more emails I didn’t get through earlier or browsing Instagram. IN 10 YEARS’ TIME... I would love to see Pad grow much bigger internationally perhaps with a store across the pond and a bigger team supporting the business. Then I can have more down time, and more holidays with the family. padlifestyle.com
