Iona College · Volunteer Handbook 2025

Page 1

We acknowledge the Quandamooka peoples, upon whose lands Iona College stands. We respect and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, past, present and emerging.

Ionians pray that God’s grace inspires and empowers us to be people of reconciliation and justice.

Introduction

The Iona College Volunteer Handbook is an integral part of the volunteer induction process, and is a valuable resource to support the College in our duty of care for community members and our compliance with legislation. This Handbook and the associated policies clearly outline the expectations and requirements of volunteers at Iona College.

Since 1957, Iona has relied on the support and wonderful generosity of our parents and friends, in partnership with the Oblate community, to create the outstanding campus and community we are so fortunate to share today.

For more than 65 years, the contribution of volunteers has allowed Iona to provide the extensive educational and co-curricular programs for the benefit of our students. We are grateful to the families who contribute their time and talents to support the growth of our students through the many volunteering opportunities available every year.

The College understands that some of our families are not able to commit to the volunteering opportunities available across the year. Iona provides the option of an annual

$150 Commitment Levy that can be paid in lieu of volunteering, which will be applied to the tuition fee account in Term 4 for families unable to volunteer.

Please understand that some volunteering opportunities are in high demand and the College receives expressions of interest from more applicants than openings available. It is therefore recommended that a second preference is also chosen.

It is a requirement of all volunteers to complete an induction process. Further training and information may be required for specific volunteer roles.

If you do not complete the Expression of Interest Form For Volunteering, it will be assumed that you are opting to pay the Commitment Levy.

Thank you for being part of our community and contributing to the support and growth of the students in our care.

Inspired by the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the life of St Eugene de Mazenod, the Iona College community focuses on educating and empowering young men to make a positive difference throughout their lives and to the lives of others.

Mission

Our Mission is to learn, live, lead and serve as a Catholic learning community within the Oblate spirit.

Principles of volunteering

• Volunteering benefits the community and the volunteer.

• Volunteer work is unpaid.

• Volunteering is always a matter of choice.

• Volunteering is a legitimate way in which people can participate in the activities of their community.

• Volunteers do not replace paid workers nor constitute a threat to the job security of paid workers.

• Volunteering respects the rights, dignity and culture of others.
