Growing up as a “preacher’s kid,” I was very aware of both the activities and the holiness of the seasons. Going to church services each week and observing the passing of time as each Advent candle was lit, leading up to the arrival of Christmas Eve became a time I looked forward to with eager anticipation. The entire “Christmas season,” from Advent through Epiphany Sunday, holds such powerful meaning for me because of the traditions it brings each year. In the rush of the season to plan parties, decorate our trees, buy and wrap gifts, make arrangements for spending time with family, and attend special worship celebrations, we often lose the meaning and meaningfulness of this sacred span of time.

eggnog. Too much will leave you feeling uncomfortable later. Stay within your budget when giving gifts. It’s easy to splurge for a loved one, but if it’s going to cause you hardship down the line, reconsider the present. • Remember self-care. With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it’s easy to forget to take care of yourself. Factor in time to exercise, meditate, read a book or do anything else you enjoy. Getting a bit of “me” time may be just what you need to reset your holiday clock. • Say no. It’s common for families to gather to celebrate. Nearly all families are dysfunctional in some way. However, some families create toxic environments. If you feel pressured to gather with individuals who cause you trauma, decline the invitation. The holidays should be a happy time. If these celebrations hurt your mental and emotional well-being, don’t go. • Reach out for help. Ask family members to divide up tasks or to assist you as you tend to holiday duties. If you continue feeling overwhelmed, consider that your feelings may not just be a side effect of the holidays. You may be experiencing depression, anxiety, or other issues that should be addressed by a mental health professional. Additionally, even if you don’t normally experience mental health issues, but your struggles during the holiday season are holding you back from everyday life, consider seeking professional help to work through your feelings. Southeast Kansas Mental Health Center is here to help you during the holidays and all other times of the year. Call us 24/7 at 1-866-9732241 or visit us at sekmhc.org. However, if you tend to attack the ground with your heel, choose a pair of shoes with a 10- to 12-millimeter incline. 3. Assess your foot shape. It’s important to choose a shoe that offers enough stability to keep your feet aligned. If your feet tend to roll inward while running, you probably have flat feet. 3. Show your appreciation for those who offer their services. A thank-you note for the mail carrier, a tin of cookies for those who pick up our trash, a hat or gloves for those who serve us – a small gift can go a long way. 4. Volunteer to serve meals. Sunday Soups, held the last two Sundays of the month at Iola’s First Presbyterian Church, is a wonderful way to serve. Call 620-380-6664 for more information. Meals on Wheels, coordinated by Allen County Clerk Shannon Patterson, needs people to deliver meals. To volunteer for Meals on Wheels, call 620-3652. Give to your local food pantry. 5. Help someone you know by offering to watch their kids or prepare a meal for them. This time of year is hectic. A pan of lasagna, or an afternoon baby-sitting so that parents can go shopping, can bring a welcome sigh of relief.

10. Get involved. Your time is just as valuable than your money. This holiday season, identify an organization or group where you feel you could make a difference. Maybe you can read to elementary school students in the morning. Or join crews that help maintain our trails. Sign up to usher at the Bowlus 6. Sort through unwanted toys, clothes Fine Arts Center. Become a Court Appointed or books, and donate to someone in Special Advocate to help ensure kids are proneed. A variety of locations here in town, tected in court. Your talents are needed! like ACARF’s Second Chance or Iola Senior Center’s Shop Thrifty, would be happy to take quality items you don’t need. 7. Support charitable organizations. Iola’s Salvation Army uses 100% of all donations to benefit the needy here in Allen County. Humanity House provides food and valuable services to hundreds of local families. Your Community Foundation, Thrive Allen County, the Pregnancy Resource Center and others are great local options. Zooming out, Charity Navigator is a great way to find a worthy cause that fits your interests. Visit charitynavigator.org to learn more. 8. Visit someone who lives alone. A Christmas card, a small gift, or twenty minutes of your time, can make someone’s day. If you can, raking their leaves or shoveling snow can also be a big help for those who are elderly and can’t get around well. 9. Shop local. It may not seem like much, but every dollar that stays in our community, helps our community. Think about purchasing gift cards to local restaurants or stores, Chamber Bucks from the Chamber of Commerce, or the wares of local artisans. There’s no use in pretending you can buy everything in town. But every bit helps.

Happy holidays from everyone at
