Moran talks jobs, virus & discord By SUSAN LYNN The Iola Register

Sen. Jerry Moran speaks in Iola Thursday.

U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran said he sees “merit” in an infrastructure bill Congressional Democrats and President Donald Trump are working on. Moran, a Republican, said he could see the measure as a good way of “putting people back to work and maybe it’s smarter to spend that money today to try to boost the economy by creating more jobs.” About 30 million Americans are looking for work. Moran was especially favorable for its inclusion of $100 billion for broadband expansion. Admitting neither big spending nor big government are in his DNA, the senator said “the challenges of the pandemic require both.” Moran addressed Thursday’s gathering of the Iola See MORAN | Page A6

AHARPE — Joyce Lee is in a giving mood. The occasion? Her 80th birthday, which was Friday. The gifts? Quilts. Lots of quilts. Lee is celebrating her birthday by gifting quilts to each of her 24 grandchildren. The gifts will be distributed next weekend — a combination birthday/Independence Day celebration at the Lee household in LaHarpe. “The kids are planning something,” Lee noted, but she’s largely been kept out of the planning process. City leaders are pushing back their plans to open the Iola Municipal Pool, at least a week. Interim Iola City Administrator Corey Schinstock announced Thursday morning the delay, citing a recent rise in confirmed COVID-19 cases in Allen County. “With four cases in Allen County, I just don’t feel

comfortable opening the pool at this time,” Schinstock said. The Iola pool was scheduled to open on Monday, about a month later than normal. For weeks, Allen County had avoided the brunt of the novel coronavirus, with the only confirmed See POOL | Page A6
