WASHINGTON (AP) — More than 40 million Americans could see their student loan debt reduced — and in many cases eliminated — under the long-awaited forgiveness plan President Joe Biden announced Wednesday, a historic but politically di visive move in the run-up to the midterm elections. Fulfilling a campaign promise, Biden is erasing $10,000 in federal student loan debt for those with incomes below $125,000 a year, or households that earn less than $250,000. He’s canceling an addi tional $10,000 for those who received federal Pell Grants to attend college. It’s seen as an unprece dented attempt to stem the tide of America’s rapidly rising student debt, but it doesn’t address the broad er issue — the high cost of college.Republicans quickly denounced the plan as an insult to Americans who have repaid their debt and to those who didn’t attend college. Critics across the political spectrum also questioned whether Biden has authority for the move, and legal challenges are virtually certain. Biden also extended a pause on federal student loan payments for what he called the “final time.” The pause is now set to run through the end of the year, with repayments to restart in January.

Iola, meet Iola. Iola Speck, a teenager from England, traveled halfway around the world to visit a town that shares her name. Iola and her father, Ivan, spent two days in Iola as part of a driving tour around the Midwest. They live in Higham, a village near Rochester in Kent, which is in southeast England. They flew into Chicago last week, where they rent ed a camper van airbrushed in bright colors. It was sure to get attention, and it would be their home for about two weeks; they slept in the back, taking up residence at “car parks” (the British term for parking lots) at Walmarts in cities they visited. They arrived in Iola on Wednesday afternoon, where they visited the Register’s of fice. Ivan is a sports reporter, so he appreciates the value of a quirky story and thought Io lans might like to know about Iola’sShe’svisit.14 and attends an allgirls school, where she will be entering her 10th year soon af ter returning home.
THE NAME of Iola, the English girl, comes from mul tiple sources that are mostly connected to family. It’s a way to combine the names of her parents, Ivan andTheLeeann.name also comes from a little-known princess in Greek mythology.Iolameans violet in Greek. Violet is the flower of Febru ary, which is the month Iola was born, and is also the name of her grandmother.

NIKOPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainians are once again anxious about the fate of a nuclear pow er plant in a land that was home to the world’s worst atomic accident in 1986 at Chernobyl — and alarm only increased Thursday when the plant operator said the facility has been cut off from the electrical grid. The Zaporizhzhia nu clear plant, Europe’s larg est, has been occupied by Russian forces since the early days of the war, and continued fighting near the facility has heightened fears of a catastrophe that could affect nearby towns in southern Ukraine — or potentially an even wider region.OnThursday, the plant was cut off from the power grid for the first time af

COLONY — Pastor Chase Riebel shared with Colony Christian Church members Sun day lessons from the trail that he learned while on a backpacking trip in Wyoming we can apply as we journey on our path through life. First, strip off the weight, Riebel said. Even a wristwatch is heavy at 10,000 feet. Don’t carry the extra weight that will slow you down and wear you out. Hebrews 12:1 says “strip off every weight that slows us down, es pecially the sin that so easily trips us up,” Rieb el said. Lay down your burdens and strip your self of sin. The second lesson is to fuel yourself with real power. Cosmic brownies are a nice snack, but to maintain the energy you need to carry all your gear on your back over the mountain to your destination, you need a calorie packed, protein rich, hearty meal. Similarly, we must consume God’s Word, Riebel said. This life is full of ups and downs, emotionally and spiritu ally draining experienc es, and plenty of short cuts that will lead us downhill if we have only been snacking and not filling up on God’s Word. Lastly, don’t play dumb. When there is a bear in the area and someone spills some food on your sleeping bag, don’t just wipe it off and tell yourself the bear won’t smell it. Thankfully, the park ranger had already se cured the bear the night before, Riebel said, but how often do we play dumb with God? Ananias and Sapphi ra thought they could get away with telling a little white lie in Acts 5 by saying they were do nating all of the money they received from a sale when in fact they were only donating a portion, Riebel said. The problem wasn’t with the amount of the donation. The problem was that they lied to God. We need to take an honest look at our lives and determine if we have actually given our whole life to Jesus or if we are holding parts back that we don’t want to surrender, he contin ued.Don’t play dumb, God knows.Hear this and other sermons by using your favorite podcast app, on the church Facebook page, or at christianchurch.org.www.colony

Family fun awaits Scientists have cre ated “synthetic” mouse embryos from stem cells without a dad’s sperm or a mom’s egg or Thewomb.lab-created em bryos mirror a natural mouse embryo up to 8 ½ days after fertilization, containing the same structures, including one like a beating heart. The feat could also lay the foundation for creating synthetic human embryos for re search in the future.

TOKYO (AP) — The operator of the wrecked Fukushima nuclear pow er plant said Thursday it is further postponing the start of the removal of highly radioactive melt ed fuel from its damaged reactors because of de lays in the development of a remote-controlled roboticTokyoarm.Electric Power Company Holdings had originally planned to begin removing melted fuel from the Unit 2 re actor at the Fukushima Daiichi plant last year, 10 years after the disaster triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011. That plan was post poned until later this year, and now will be de layed further until about autumn next year be cause of additional work needed to improve the performance of the ro botic arm, TEPCO said. The giant arm, jointly developed by Veolia Nu clear Solutions of Brit ain and Japan’s Mitsubi shi Heavy Industries, has been transported to Ja pan and is being adjusted at a testing facility south of the Fukushima plant. The delay won’t af fect the overall decom missioning at the plant, which is expected to take 30-40 years, TEPCO said. Experts have said the completion target is too optimistic.During the accident, an estimated 880 tons of highly radioactive nucle ar fuel in the three dam aged reactors melted and fell to the bottom of their primary containment vessels.

In Kansas City, they went to a Royals base ball game. They’ll see a Cardinals game in St. Louis. They especially en joyed their visit to Iowa City, where they ate “an American-style break fast.” Iola showed this reporter a photo of the giant plate of pancakes sheAndordered.speaking of food, Iola talked about the different names for certain items. In En gland, they call french fries “chips” and what Americans call chips, they call “crisps.” What Americans call cookies, they call bis cuits, so Iola wondered, what are “biscuits” here? This reporter ex plained and suggest ed they try “biscuits and gravy.” They both looked horrified when shown a photo of the dish. They visited a Mc Donald’s so Iola could compare the fast food restaurants in England and the U.S. She was shocked to learn she could get a 10-piece chicken nugget meal here; in England, the meal comes with six pieces.“It’s interesting to see what is the same here and what is differ ent,” Iola said. IVAN has been to the U.S. before, cover ing sporting events for work. For this trip, he’s try ing to avoid the inter states and instead takes more scenic country roads. “We just tried to do all of the things you see in movies and you hear about,” Ivan said of their itinerary. It’s led to some in teresting discoveries, such as passing by an Amish couple or going through tiny “ghost towns” with few busi nesses and dilapidated houses.Ivan noted the price of petrol (gasoline) is much more affordable in the U.S. than in En gland, but the food is twice as expensive. He calculated the cost of a gallon of unleaded gas oline in England would be about $9.50. He also explained that in England, un leaded fuel pumps are green. He drove into a gas station in the U.S. and pulled up to the green pump, only to learn it was diesel fuel. He hasn’t had any trouble driving on the appropriate side of the road, but said he and Iola frequently try to get into the van on the opposite side out of habit. Ivan also is ac customed to driving a manual transmission, so he kept wanting to use both feet when driv ing the automatic van. “Generally, your roads are so quiet be cause there’s so much space between towns,” heButobserved.perhaps one of the most significant differences they’ve no ticed is the lack of recy cling options in the U.S. Whenever they stopped for food or sup plies, they looked for places to recycle their used plastic bottles and other items. They couldn’t find many. “It’s really surpris ing,” Ivan said. Iola was shocked to be handed a plas tic straw, wrapped in paper, at restaurants. Back home, she only uses paper straws. They stopped using plastic straws years ago. “You have no recy cling here — not just Iola but everywhere,” Iola said, surprised. “In England, everything is recycled. You can’t put plastic in the rubbish bins.”Itwas a timely con versation, as a group of Allen County volun teers are struggling to find a way to offer recy cling in the community.

working and middle class people hit especial ly hard during the pan demic,” Biden said at the White House Wednesday afternoon.Republicans quick ly denounced the plan as an insult to Ameri cans who have repaid their debt and to those who didn’t attend col lege. Critics across the political spectrum also questioned whether Biden has authority for the move, and legal challenges are virtually certain. Even some fel low Democrats rebuked the move, saying it does nothing to fix the debt crisis.“In my view, the ad ministration should have further targeted the relief, and proposed a way to pay for this plan,” said Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo. “While immediate relief to fam ilies is important, onetime debt cancellation does not solve the under lyingTheproblem.”cancellation ap plies to federal student loans used to attend un dergraduate and grad uate school, along with Parent Plus loans. Cur rent college students qualify if their loans were issued before July 1. For dependent stu dents, their parents’ household income must be below $250,000. Most people will need to apply for the relief. The Education Depart ment has income data for a small share of bor rowers, but the vast ma jority will need to prove their incomes through an application process. Officials said applica tions will be available before the end of the year.Biden’s plan makes 43 million borrowers el igible for some debt for giveness, with 20 million who could get their debt erased entirely, accord ing to the administra tion. About 60% of bor rowers are recipients of federal Pell Grants, which are reserved for undergraduates with the most significant fi nancial need, meaning more than half can get $20,000 in Sabrinarelief.Cartan, a 29-year-old media strat egist in New York City, is expecting her federal debt to get wiped out en tirely. When she checked the balance Wednesday, it was Cartan$9,940.used the loans to attend Tufts Universi ty, and with Biden’s plan she will be able to help her parents repay the additional thousands they borrowed for her education. As a first-gen eration college student, she called it a “leveling moment.”“Iknow there are peo ple who feel that this isn’t enough, and that is true for a lot of peo ple,” said Cartan, who already has repaid about $10,000 of her loans. “I can say for me personal ly and for a lot of people, that is a lot of money.”

The most common way that pets come into contact with toxins is by ingesting them. Onions, garlic, chocolate, xylitol, grapes, avocados, alcohol, fruit pits, seeds, nuts, coffee, green potatoes, and many more foods are toxic to dogs. Citrus, alcohol, caffeine, grapes, chives, and more are toxic to cats. The best way owners can prevent accidental poisoning is to always research before feeding their pet any new foods. It is also important if buying homemade or natural treats to check the ingredient list. Aside from actual food items, pets will often ingest toxic plants or chemicals. Lilies, yew, tulips, and other plants are toxic to cats. Dogs may ingest toxic plants or the highly toxic and quickly deadly blue-green algae, which can bloom in natural water sources. Antifreeze, cleaners, and other chemicals may be toxic to pets. Pet owners should always be careful to store chemicals in a way that pets can’t access them and be sure that any rooms where these chemicals have been used have completely aired out and dried, as well as ensuring that there is no residue which may be picked up on their pet’s paws. Many toxins are inhaled by pets when owners burn candles, use wax melts, or use oil diffusers in their houses.
For Braxton Simpson, Biden’s plan is a great first step, but it’s not enough. The 23-year-old MBA student at North Carolina Central Uni versity has more than $40,000 in student loans. As an undergraduate student she took jobs to minimize her debt, but at $10,000 a semester, the costs piled up.
As a Black woman, she felt higher educa tion was a requirement to obtain a more stable financial future, even if that meant taking on large amounts of debt, she“Insaid.order for us to get out of a lot of the situa tions that have been sys temically a part of our lives, we have to go to school,” Simpson said. “And so we end up in debt.”The plan doesn’t ap ply to future college students, but Biden is proposing a separate rule that would reduce monthly payments on federal student debt. The proposal would create a new payment plan requiring borrow ers to pay no more than 5% of their earnings, down from 10% in sim ilar existing plans. It would forgive any re maining balance after 10 years, down from 20 years now. It would also raise the floor for repayments, meaning no one earn ing less than 225% of the federal poverty lev el would need to make monthly payments. As a regulation, it would not require con gressional approval. But it can take more than a year to Biden’sfinalize.plancomes af ter more than a year of deliberation, with the president facing strong lobbying from liberals who wanted sweeping debt forgiveness, and from moderates and conservatives who ques tioned its basic fairness. Once a popular cam paign promise during the presidential prima ry, the issue created an almost unwinnable sit uation. Still, many Dem ocrats rallied around it, including support from those who wanted Biden to go beyond $10,000. “I will keep pushing for more because I think it’s the right thing to do,” said Sen. Elizabeth War ren, D-Mass., who had urged Biden to forgive up to $50,000 a person. “But we need to take a deep breath here and recognize what it means for the president of the United States to touch so many hard-working middle class families so directly.”Proponents see can cellation as a matter of racial justice. Black students are more likely to take out federal stu dent loans and at high er amounts than their whiteThepeers.NAACP, which pressed Biden to cancel at least $50,000 per per son, said the plan is “one step closer” to lifting the burden of student debt. Derrick Johnson, the group’s president, urged Biden to cancel the debt quickly and without bu reaucratic hurdles for borrowers.Biden’s decision to impose an income cap goes against objections from some who say add ing the detailed applica tion process to verify in comes could deter some borrowers who need help the most. The Biden adminis tration defended the cap as a gate against wealthi er borrowers. Politically, it’s designed to counter arguments from critics who call debt cancella tion a handout for the wealthy. Republicans hit hard with that argument on Wednesday despite the“Presidentcap. Biden’s in flation is crushing work ing families, and his an swer is to give away even more government mon ey to elites with higher salaries,” Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell said. “Democrats are literally using working Americans’ money to try to buy themselves some enthusiasm from their political base.” One of the chief polit ical sticking points has been the cost: Biden’s new plan, including debt cancellation, a new re payment plan and the payment freeze, will cost between $400 billion to $600 billion, according to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a nonprofit that advocates for lower defi cits.Asked about the cost Wednesday, Susan Rice, Biden’s domestic poli cy adviser, said, “I can’t give you that off the top of my Therehead.”are also lin gering questions about the administration’s au thority to cancel student loan debt. The Justice Department released a legal opinion conclud ing that the Higher Ed ucation Relief Opportu nities for Students Act gives the Education sec retary the “authority to reduce or eliminate the obligation to repay the principal balance of fed eral student loan debt.” The legal opinion also concluded that the forgiveness could be ap plied on a “class-wide” basis in response to the coronavirus pandemic, a national Lawsuitsemergency..arelike ly nonetheless. Eucalyptus, citrus, tea tree oil, cinnamon, peppermint, pine, and other oils or scents are toxic to pets. It is important for owners to consider their animals when using these kinds of products. These oils are also toxic when they touch a pet’s skin. Using shampoo or even the oils themselves as home remedies can have deadly consequences. Owners must research these kinds of home remedies before attempting them, as many of these toxicities can occur quickly and be difficult or even impossible to treat. When a pet has encountered something and an owner is unsure if it is toxic or whether to be concerned, they should call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (800) 213-6680. Be sure to have your credit card ready when you call. These are not free services. If treatment is needed, the owner should call their vet or the closest emergency veterinary hospital and follow doctors’ instructions. Dog owners should also keep hydrogen peroxide that has not expired in their house if a veterinarian advises administration before bringing the pet to the clinic. Owners should never attempt to treat toxicity at home or induce vomiting without the direction of a licensed veterinarian.ByNicole Wright, Veterinary Technician Protect your pets at home

Wacko proposals would send N.C. schools back in time
Robinson’s no-sci ence, no-history cur riculum is bad for our children as well as our ‘best in the business’ economy. Companies won’t want to come here if the schools don’t teach basic con cepts and facts.
Jim Leiker Kansas Reflector Third graders who attend public school in North Car olina learn about the solar system and volcanoes in sci ence class. Fourth graders studySocialfossils.studies at the sec ond grade level teaches stu dents about democracy. In fifth grade, students discuss rights that are protected un der the U.S. Constitution. But according to Republi can Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, kids shouldn’t be learning about any of that. Robinson has all but guar anteed he’ll run for gover nor in 2024. And, as he’s already demonstrated with last year’s laughably unsuc cessful task force to uncover evidence of “indoctrination” in schools, he has quite a few thoughts about public educa tion. Some of those thoughts made their way into his forthcoming memoir, WRAL News reported, and they in clude this doozy: eliminating the State Board of Education and andabouttolyence.bedon’thecialbedon’tgrades,ricula.fifthfirsthistorysciencesubjectsremovinglikeandfromthroughgradecur“Inthoseweneedtoteachingsostudies,”writes.“WeneedtoteachingsciWesuredon’tneedbetalkingequitysocialjustice.”Becauselearning about scary liberal concepts like plants or geography is clear ly a threat to elementary school children. Does he think kids need to wait until middle school to learn that the earth isn’t flat? But as patently wacky as Robinson’s suggestion is, it’s also just plain bad for our state. Public school curricu lum, especially in elementa ry school, provides students with the basic tools they need to succeed in the world. That’s not just a North Caro lina thing. It’s how it works everywhere.Robinson’s no-science, no-history curriculum is bad for our children, who will fall behind because they’re learning concepts like gravi ty and the three branches of government at a slower pace than their peers in other states — or because they sim ply haven’t been taught how to think critically. It’s also bad for our “best in business” economy, which depends on a workforce that can match states competing with us for elite companies.

Nor will those companies want to come here if the schools that employees send their kids to don’t teach ba sic things that are building blocks to deeper learning. And it would make a mock ery of North Carolina — something Robinson already manages to do quite often when he makes headlines like this. Does Robinson real ly want us to plummet to the bottom? To be known for the inferiority of our public edu cation system and struggle to recruit industries outside of manufacturing?BrianLiVecchi, Robin son’s chief of staff, appeared to offer more context on Twitter, arguing that reading should be prioritized over other subjects like “chemis try and economics.” “NC public schools are failing to reliably meet even the basic and fundamental requirement of teaching our kids to read. Get that right first,” he Readingwrote.and other sub jects are not mutually exclu sive, however, and sending kids into the world with an incomplete un derstanding of how it works is hardly bet ter than failing to teach them to read. Stu dents need part,forsomethingeducationwell-roundeda—that,themostthey’real ready receiving right now. What do Republicans think about Robinson’s latest pronouncement? Are they willing to help him advance this kind of legislative agen da?If Robinson were gover nor, he technically wouldn’t have the authority to initi ate such a radical change to public school curriculum on his own. But we’re not sure who actually would, since Robinson also wants to eliminate the State Board of Education, which is the en tity responsible for revising content standards and the required course of study. As lieutenant governor, Robin son is currently a member of the very board he’s seeking to Perhapseliminate.we should thank the lieutenant governor for his candor, because North Carolinians now have a more precise idea of what they’d be voting for in 2024. Rob inson keeps giving Demo crats and Republicans alike more reasons to think he’s bad news. We can’t say we weren’t warned.

Journalism that makes a difference When pro-Trump extrem ists converged in Washing ton, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021, they followed precedents that had been in the works for a long time. In winter 1979, the Amer ican Agriculture Movement led a “tractorcade” from the Midwest and plains to the U.S. capital. AAM’s goal was to draw attention to the nation’s agricultural crisis. Since 1935, half of farms on the Great Plains had failed. For a few, stubborn forms of rural nationalism and racist conspiracy theories became convenient ways to explain their predicaments. Eastern Colorado and western Kansas played prominent roles. In Janu ary 1983, police used mace and tear gas to break up farmers who tried to force their way into the Baca County, Colorado, court house to stop a foreclosure auction. A year earlier, 56 people attended an “ecolog ical seminar” near Weskan, on the states’ border, that taught camouflage, hand-tohand combat, and construc tion of pipe bombs for home defense.Through the 1980s, propa ganda from the John Birch Society and the posse comi tatus started finding its way onto kitchen tables and into after-church socials. Chris tian Identity literature de scribed Kansas as the site of Armageddon’s “Battle of the Wheat Fields,” when farmers would make their stand against urban Black and Jewish people storming the countryside, looking for food.In 1985, the FBI and Kan sas Crime Prevention Asso ciation claimed that foreclo sures in the Plains region elevated membership in paramilitary organizations to more than 2 million. With some violent ex ceptions, the militia move ment largely spent itself in the 1990s. But thanks to the rhetoric of charis matic politicians, its ide ology of armed anti-gov ernment resistance and liberal-elite conspiracies, fomented in corrupt East ern cities, found a home in mainstream conservatism during the decades ahead. It would be a mistake to exaggerate the rural ori gins of the insurrection of Jan. 6. Many who stormed the Capitol that day came from cities and suburbs. They were factory workers, Realtors, IT technicians — hardly the kind of angry pickup-driving types often assumed in stereotypes about Trump supporters. But that event did culmi nate from, and contribute to, a growing city-country split that becomes more evi dent with each election. Kansas leaders ignore this history at their peril. Depopulation in our ru ral areas continues strong. Each census reveals more parts of Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakotas returning to the 1890 definition of “frontier” as having less than two people per square mile. Those who leave tend to be young, better educated and politically moderate, more prepared to pursue opportunities elsewhere. What remains are aging communities more isolated, and more prone to radical thought and behavior, than before.Areview of the county breakdowns on the Aug. 2 vote shows a clear rejection of the “Value Them Both” abortion amendment in ur ban areas. Yet even in most rural counties, surprising numbers of “No” votes in excess of 40% occurred, proving you can’t always know a person by their ZIP code.Progressives might have a rare opportunity here to build bridges. But that will require sensitivity, some acknowledgement that the fears of rural Kansans about their way of life be ing under attack are real, because they are. Indifferent shrugs and a concession to the inevitabil ity of metropolitan life will be insufficient. A gazebo at Allen County Regional Hospital has been moved to a new location along a walking trail built around the hospital grounds. The trail was built by Thrive Allen County for patients, staff and visitors. A healing garden will be planted around the gazebo, targeted for the fall if the weather cooperates. County crews including Mitch Garner with Public Works and Mark Griffith with the road and bridge departments helped with the move, along with Chad Scott, ACRH facilities.

Expanding Larned State Hospital wasn’t practical because the lo cal labor supply was in sufficient to staff more beds, she However, said.Howard told legislators the sustained high volume of people with serious mental health conditions was straining health care systems and law en forcement agencies. A new state hospital in Wichita could be justi fied because nearly 20% of patients admitted to the state hospitals at Osawatomie and Larned come from Sedgwick County, she said. “There’s a lot of rea sons why Sedgwick County makes a lot of sense if we’re looking at the cost of adding beds,” Howard said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Rus sia’s military actions there amount to “nu clear blackmail.” No civilian nuclear plant is designed for a wartime situation, although the build ings housing Zapor izhzhia’s six reactors are protected by rein forced concrete that could withstand an er rant shell, experts say. The more immedi ate concern is that a disruption of electric ity supply — like the one nuclear power op erator, Energoatom, re ported Thursday that meant two remaining reactors at the plant were disconnected from the grid. The operator said it couldn’t immediately comment on the oper ation of safety systems at the plant, where emergency diesel gen erators are sometimes unreliable.External power is es sential not just to cool the two reactors still in operation but also the spent radioactive fuel stored in special facili ties onsite — and only one of the plant’s four power lines connecting it to the grid has been operational.“Ifwelose the last one, we are at the total mercy of emergency power generators,” said Najmedin Mesh kati, a professor of civ il and itarizedagreementfromsonnelalurgedRosemaryday,CouncilGrossiweMoscowagencyweektinPresidentwhoEmmanuelwithafterFrance-24vancing,complicatedaccesshow“days.”sionheGrossi,head,severalZaporizhzhiatricityplant,conventionalformersweekshellingnucleargynationaldioactivecauseshelling,alsoarewherenearbyaboutCalifornia.versityengineeringenvironmentalattheUniofSouthernAnotherconcernthefightingisthatpoolsspentfuelrodskepttobecooledarevulnerabletowhichcouldthereleaseoframaterial.KyivtoldtheInterAtomicEnerAgency,theU.N.’swatchdog,thatearlierthisdamagedtransatanearbypowerdisruptingelecsuppliestotheplantforhours.Theatomicagency’sRafaelMarianosaidThursdayhopestosendamistotheplantwithinNegotiationsoverthemissionwouldtheplantarebutadhesaidontelevisionmeetinginParisFrenchPresidentMacron,pressedRussianVladimirPuinaphonecalllasttoallowtheU.N.tovisitthesite.“Kyivacceptsit.acceptsit.Soneedtogothere,”said.AtaU.N.SecuritymeetingTuesU.N.politicalchiefDiCarlothewithdrawofallmilitaryperandequipmenttheplantandanonademilzonearoundit.

TOPEKA — A patient in mental health crisis undergoing treatment at the overcrowded Ascen sion Via Christi St. Jo seph in Wichita brutally attacked a nurse check ing his vital signs. “He comes off the bed and grabs her neck and he is intent on squeezing the life out of her,” said Robyn Chadwick, pres ident of Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph. “Be fore he completely had his hands tight around her neck she was able to get out a squeal.” Her cry for help sum moned other staff mem bers who subdued the patient at south-central Kansas’ largest provider of acute mental health services. The violent in cident was a symptom of overcrowding in the Ascension hospital’s emergency room and a reminder of the long standing shortage of bed space at state mental hos pitals in Osawatomie and Larned, Chadwick said. She endorsed con struction of a 50-bed be haviorial health facility in Sedgwick County, a proposal under consid eration Tuesday by a House and Senate com mittee. The catch, Chadwick said, was additional hospital beds wouldn’t automatically close the statewide gap in access to mental health ser vices because of staff ing shortages plaguing health care facilities in Kansas.Sherecommended the state invest in develop ment of nurses, social workers, counselors and other health workers by offering in-state tuition rates to nonresidents, creating student loan forgiveness programs and modifying licensing and certification proto col to allow reciprocity with other states. The state needs to expand el igibility for Medicaid to provide wider insurance coverage of lower-in come individuals and generate revenue for hospitals struggling to recruit and retain staff, she“Isaid.have great anxiety and trepidation about adding a 50-bed hospi tal,” Chadwick said. “I don’t know how we would staff it.” Sedgwick County officials requested an appropriation of $40 million from the Legis lature for construction of the regional behav ioral health facility. In addition, Gov. Laura Kelly recommended the state budget include $15 million to support the project.Separately, Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph submitted a proposal to the Legislature for $22 million to expand its emergency room. The objective is to incorpo rate a 20-bed psychiatric safe area at the hospital to better segregate pa tients in the emergency room, she said. Rep. Kyle Hoffman, a Coldwater Republican on the joint committee studying mental health bed space issues, asked Chadwick whether it was necessary to add a new state psychiatric hospital and expand at Ascension Via Christi. Chadwick said hundreds of Wichita hospital beds devoted to patients with mental health challeng es had been lost during the past 30 years. “I truly believe both are needed,” Chadwick said. “We will stay in this business, but we need your help to do it.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. homered during Kansas City’s five-run rally in the seventh inning, leading Brady Singer and the Royals over the Arizona Diamondbacks 5-3 Wednesday night.Arizona starter Zac Gallen extended his shutout streak to 27 1/3 innings, leaving after the sixth with a 1-0 lead. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out six. “I just felt like I was trying to worry about (the shutout streak),” Gallen said. “It’s one of those things where if you let it get too big and control you too much it can be a problem. I felt like that in the first couple innings. I was trying to worry about that too much. I just need to do my job and not worry about it.” The Royals broke loose in the seventh against the Arizona bullpen. Kansas City finished with seven hits, snapping an eight-game streak of six hits or less. “Guys coming through in big situations, that situational hitting is what we need to fight our way in close games,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “And then Bobby Witt does what Bobby Witt does.”Christian Walker hit his career-high 30th homer for Arizona, which has dropped four of Singerfive.(7-4) allowed four hits, including a fifth-inning solo homer by Daulton Varsho, in seven innings. “I felt good,” Singer said. “The fastball, slider were working. The fastball had a lot of movement on it.” Singer is 4-1 over his past 10 starts, posting a 2.14 ERA in that span. “I don’t know a pitcher around the league who has thrown better than what the guy on the other side has, except maybe our guy,” Matheny said. “He’s going to have to be good because their guy isn’t giving up anything. It took until the final seconds of the Allen Community College men’s soccer home opener to come away victorious. Women’s Soccer The Lady Red Devils were sluggish for much of the opening half, allowing JCCC to control the ball. Allen's first goal came 42 minutes into the game. The opening goal for the Lady Cavaliers was unassisted and saw Darrian Gordon chip a shot over the goalkeeper's head for the 1-0Onlylead. two minutes later, Gordon headed in her second goal from the back line for the 2-0 first half advantage. Allen only managed 10 shots on goal in the match.Coming out of the gates after halftime, Johnson County controlled the ball yet again with few sideline fast breaks for Allen County. Eight minutes into the half, JCCC's Willoughby Lam took a pass from Gordon which she turned into a score and the three goal edge,Johnson3-0. County’s Emma Le posted the final goal for her team with 11 minutes remaining in regulation for some insurance room. The assist was fed by Madalyn Crow and came on a set of cross volley kicks in front of the net. This would give Johnson County their winning score over Allen, 4-0. Coach McGinnis and Katherine Hammond each received a yellow card during the match. Allen’s Claudia Zahui and Lizeth Suarez registered three shots on goal apiece and Zahui ripped four shots total. Seven Lady Red Devils were able to manage shots on goal for a combined total of 11. Men’s Soccer With the seconds ticking down in the double overtime period of a knotted 2-2 match with Johnson County, ACC’s Temesgn Tezera came through on an unassisted kick from the left side of the net for the winning goal. My children were all of 4 and 8, and I went to Utah by myself and tried to get home to the kids when I could. She also was apart from her family, and she was 7 years old. I went to her and said, “Listen, I’ll be your dad for the run of the show if you’ll be my kid.” The hardest part of what we do, I think, is being away from our families for long periods of time. And she and I are still ver y close.
e’ve all talked about the possibility one day of doing a O’Brien-family movie, which I think would be a wonderful thing. I can’t speak for Hallmark, but I know that there’s hope on the part of our extraordinar y writers to do stories that would take each of the couples to the next stage their lives. That’s all wishful thinking, though. Right now, we’re focused on having as many people as possible watch this season. speak of one of your earlier series, can you talk about your special relationship with your young co-star Vivien Cardone while filming “Everwood”?
Though “Chesapeake Shores” is now in its last of six seasons, do you think this is really the end for the saga?
You’ve done so much work in the police genre, from the movie “Prince of the City” to your recurring role on “Blue Bloods” and your part in the recent limited series “We Own This City,” do you enjoy maintaining that connection?
It was really wonderful when they sent me “We Own This City.” It was almost fullcircle, like (the “Prince of the City” character) Danny Ciello retired now and looking back on the corruption that was going on. I thought that once that stor y was exposed, it would all be over, but it’s cyclical. If you don’t keep an eye on it, the corruption starts again, and then you have to stop it again. ‘CHESAPEAKE
