Child struck by car near school

Iola school officials are working to educate students and the public about how to safely cross streets around the new elementary school, after a student was hit by a car following school on Tuesday.
The incident was reported at 5:39 p.m. on Tuesday, when a 10-year-old child riding a bicycle entered the crosswalk at the intersection of Kentucky and U.S. 54. The child failed to obey the pedestrian signal with the red hand up telling people not to cross, according to a report from the Iola Police Department.Whenthe light turned green, a vehicle proceeded
eastbound, striking the child and bicycle. The driver was unable to see the child because a full-sized truck on the inside lane was blocking the view.
The child was treated for injuries by EMS at the scene, and later transported by her mother to a hospital for further evaluation. The family later reported the child was

Tom Campbell is well aware of when his love of stargazing took root, largely because it was one of his first memories as a Campbellchild. — maybe 3 or 4 at the time — was playing at home with his toys, when a special report came on the television.Suddenly, all of Campbell’s thoughts of toys and games had evaporated. He found himself transfixed, watching his family’s small black-andwhite TV.
“It was a news report about one of the Apollo moon landings,” Campbell recalled.
The memory jumpstarted what has become a lifelong passion for all things celestial for the Iola native now living in College Station, Texas.
Heck, Campbell even applied in his younger days to become an astronaut.
Even though he was never selected, the love of space remains.Campbell’s love of astronomy turned into a recent pas-

Few folks get as much attention as does Noel Still when he’s working.
Still, who owns Majestic Movies in downtown Iola with his wife, Debra, has garnered the attention of passing motorists with his floppy hat and handheld billboard. He’s usually spotted along U.S. 54, somewhere near the downtown square, waving the billboard to anyone who will notice.

Kelly, GOP clash over transgender athletes
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP)
— Kansas’ Democrat ic governor launched a new television ad on Wednesday in which she says men don’t be long in women’s sports. It’s a move seeking to blunt Republican at tacks on her for vetoing two proposals to ban transgender athletes from girls’ and wom en’s school and college sports.Gov. Laura Kelly doesn’t go into details on her position in the 30-second ad, which is her first to address what Republicans see as a key education issue that hurts Kelly during a close reelection race. Her campaign later said Kelly believes decisions about transgender ath letes should be made by schools, doctors, fami lies and local officials and that the two bills she vetoed would have “created unnecessary new government man dates.”GOP challenger Der ek Schmidt, the state’s three-term attorney general, tweeted that Kelly is lying about her record, and the Republican Governors Association released a digital ad

Her campaign launched the ad after a Republican Gover nors Association ad featured a collegiate swimmer criticizing Kelly. That followed five other ads in which the RGA raised the issue, including one last week in which Schmidt says Kelly is aligned with groups pushing “the trans gender agenda.”
The swimmer fea tured in the last RGA ad, University of Ken tucky graduate Ri ley Gaines, said in a phone interview that she was surprised by Kelly’s ad because, “It’s not aligning with anything she’s said thusTimfar.”Shallenburger, a former state trea surer and Kansas Re publican Party chair, said Kelly had to deal with the issue because it’s important to many voters. He called Kel ly’s latest ad “pretty sly,” adding that she’s “trying to catch Re publicans.”JoanWagnon, a former Topeka may or and Kansas Dem ocratic Party chair, questioned whether Schmidt’s stance will play well with moder ate Republicans. ESU faculty awaits answers after firings

No other state university has taken the controversial option.
Most faculty members were allowed to remain through the end of the school year in May. Oth ers were immediately dismissed.Students responded with protests and a can dlelight vigil. Hush’s of fice is now guarded by a chain, and the student newspaper, the ESU Bul letin, photographed him being driven off campus by police. Some faculty members were weighing legal assistance from the American Association of University Professors and rushing to secure in tellectual property from university servers.
The author Joyce Carol Oates questioned the university’s actions through her Twitter ac count.“Ifa university abol ishes tenure, how can it expect to hire in structors who could get tenure-track jobs else where?” Oates wrote. “In both the short & the long run, this is self-sabotage to a university.”

Juan Chavarria, an assistant professor of accounting, information systems and finance, said his experience in the corporate world was that layoffs were imme diately followed by a talk from leadership about what the organization’s roadmap will be.
“Why can’t we get that roadmap?” Chavarria asked during the faculty senate meeting.
The lack of certainty creates an unhealthy en vironment, he added.
“It’s not healthy for anybody — not for those who are leaving, not for those who are staying,” Chavarria said.

Governor’s races take on new prominence
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) —Governor’s races often are overshadowed by the fight for control of Congress during mid term elections. But this fall, the nation’s polit ical future hangs just as much on governor’s mansions as it does on Capitol Hill.
With abortion rights, immigration policies and democracy itself in the balance, both par ties are entering the final weeks before the Nov. 8 election prepared to spend unprecedent ed amounts of money to win top state offices. Those elected will be in power for the 2024 elec tion, when they could influence voting laws as well as certification of the outcome. And their powers over abortion rights increased greatly when the U.S. Supreme Court in June left the question to states to de cide.“Governor’s races matter more than ever,” said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, chair of the Democratic Governors Association, the group working to elect Demo crats to lead states.
For Democrats, Coo per said, governors “are often the last line of defense” on issues that have been turned over to states, including gun laws and voting rights in addition to abortion. With Putin desperate, Ukraine and the West must keep up pressure
Though Russian Presi dent Vladimir Putin has often asserted that his “spe cial military operation” in Ukraine was proceeding as planned, the facts on the ground have said otherwise for months. The most dra matic recent evidence is the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the northeastern part of the country, in which Kyiv’s forces recaptured more than 3,000 square kilometers this month as many of the Kremlin’s troops broke and ran. So Mr. Putin — albeit without admitting it — has switched tactics.
In an extraordinary tele vised address Wednesday, he announced a partial mo bilization that would call up 300,000 reservists and forci bly extended the contracts of those al ready in Ukraine — as well as harsh new penalties for anyone who refuses to fight. He set the stage for annexing oc cupied areas of Ukraine, which would re cast those regions as sover eign territory that Moscow is bound to defend. Most ominously, he said that, to counter threats to its “ter ritorial integrity,” Russia “will certainly use all the means at our disposal” — an obvious allusion to its nuclear arsenal — adding, “This is not a bluff.”
pedaling words of a dictator who badly miscalculated by seeking to destroy Ukraine’s territorial integrity, and who finds himself in need of a new rationale for war.
As his battlefield losses mount, Mr. Putin is taxing the patience both of Russian hard-liners who had sup ported his war and of major non-Western countries that had indulged it. The latter category includes China and India, whose respective leaders signaled their un happiness with Mr. Putin at a recent multinational conference in Uzbekistan.
Another attendee at that meeting, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said there must be peace and a return of Ukrainian terri tory — includ ing Crimea, seized in 2014.
We will stand in solidarity to Russia’s agression.

Even if she wins, Kelly can lose if this measure prevails
By JOEL MATHIS Special to McClatchy
President Biden and the leaders of other nations supporting Ukraine must take all of this seriously even as they take none of it at face value. Yes, Mr. Putin appears to be raising the stakes; but at the same time, he implied that Russia was scaling back its war aims — from the erstwhile (and absurd) “denazification” of all Ukraine to the mere protection of purportedly traditional Russian lands in the southeastern Donbas region. Indeed, Mr. Putin sought to recast his aggres sive war as a reactive one. “The territorial integrity of our motherland, our inde pendence and freedom will be defended,” he said. These are the hypocritical, back
The serious part is indeed the call for military rein forcements and the nuclear saber-rattling. It would be negligent to assume that Mr. Putin will not use the for mer to perpetuate combat as long as he can — or the lat ter to compensate for the in eptitude of his conventional forces if it comes to that. Cornered, he might be more dangerous. Yet, in practical terms, neither more troops nor nuclear weapons can be brought to bear effectively immediately. The only thing worse than failing to pre pare for Mr. Putin to carry out his threats would be to be cowed by them.
There was no sign of that in Mr. Biden’s remarks to the United Nations, in which he decried Mr. Putin’s “irresponsible” language and pledged: “We will stand in solidarity to Russia’s ag gression.” That was and is the winning policy, as Mr. Putin’s desperate words and deeds backhandedly — but unmistakably — confirm.

Hey Kansans: It’s time to vote no again — at least if you care about democracy in theWhenstate. you go to the polls in November, you’ll be asked to vote on two more amend ments to the state constitu tion. Unlike the August ref erendum on the “Value Them Both” abortion amendment, there aren’t millions of dol lars being poured into these measures by groups and do nors from outside the state, no endless blitz of TV ads. They’ll be easy to overlook. That would be a mistake.
One of the proposed amendments involves the election and removal of county sheriffs. The other — well, the other amendment is aimed squarely at politically neutering Gov. Laura Kelly if she wins reelection this fall.
It’s the GOP’s backup plan in case they can’t stop Kelly at the polls: They’ll disem power her instead.
LET’S START with an ex planation. The new amend ment would “allow the Legislature to establish pro cedures to revoke or suspend rules and regulations that are adopted by state execu tive branch agencies,” ac cording to the statement that accompanies the measure on thePutballot.in less bureaucratic language, it would let the Kansas Legislature — con trolled by the GOP for now and the foreseeable future — overturn a governor’s pol
icies by a simple majority vote in both the state House andIt’sSenate.aprofoundly undemo cratic
Wait.measure.Why?Wouldn’t it be more democratic to let 165 lawmakers have up-or-down votes on policies affecting the entire state instead of letting one person — the governor — have final say?
Not really.
The measure is plainly aimed at thwarting the will of Kansas voters, at least if their will is to reelect Kelly. Republicans in this state are used to ruling the roost, so to speak, which means that the election of a Democratic governor goes against their sense of the natural order of things — never mind that this solidly red state has rou tinely sent Democrats to Ce dar Crest over the last few de cades: Robert Docking, John Carlin, Joan Finney and Kathleen Sebelius all preced ed Kelly in office. And those voters just might do it again. A new poll shows Kelly cling ing to a narrow lead over her GOP challenger, Attorney General Derek Schmidt.
So if Kelly does win and the amendment passes, Re publicans in the Legislature will almost certainly use their new power to sideline her from the real business of governing, no matter what voters intended by her re election. But those lawmak ers probably won’t use that authority if Schmidt is victo rious. Why would they? He’s on their side, right?
There’s also this: The gov
ernor’s office is inherently more democratic than the Legislature.Thegovernor is elected by all the voters in Kansas, after all, chosen by and the oretically responsive to just about everybody in the state. The Legislature, meanwhile, is a gerrymandered kludge with seats drawn up to pro tect Republican incumbents and elbow Democrats out of power, all of which means in dividual lawmakers are more likely to serve narrow ideo logical interests — and just the small subset of voters in their own districts — than to have the big picture in mind. Which means the new amendment would shift even more power to those inter ests, and away from the one person in the process who serves the entire electorate.
This whole debate stems from the lockdown that Kel ly — along with nearly every other governor in the country, Republican and Democratic — put into place during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. The GOP has tried to turn the cur rent gubernatorial election into a referendum of sorts on her actions, saying she badly hurt businesses and public school students across the state. Maybe it will work and Kansans will vote her out of office. But maybe they won’t. In which case, the proposed constitutional amendment would give Kansas Republi cans a second chance to get the last word. And yes, that would be extremely undem ocratic.
As Puerto Rico works very slowly to restore pow er to the roughly 80% of the island that remains in the dark after getting smacked from Hurricane Fiona, it’s worth remembering that the “act of God” language often found in insurance and legal documents doesn’t tell the whole story. Putin’s call-up brings reality of war home to many Russians

The Lady Red Devils (5-4; 0-1) controlled the ball much of the game with a combined 11 shots through regulation but couldn’t get any shots to fall. Allen was able to toe 10 shots in the match with seven in the first half and three in the second half.
Allen also managed to kick five shots on goal through 90 minutes but the Pratt goalkeeper came up with a sixsave performance in the win.
“I think their goalkeeper came up big for them, especially the two in the first half. DEAR DR. ROACH:
I am an 88-year-old female in relatively good health. A year and a half ago, I did experience atrial fibrilliation and had two cardioversions.
(The first was good for a year; the second lasted only three months.) The diagnosis is paroxysmal AFib.My cardiologist has recommended a third cardioversion, which would require taking 400 mg of Multaq twice a day prior to the procedure, and remaining on this medication for the rest of my life (presuming the procedure is successful; if not, a stronger medication would be required). Or -- my choice -- I can do nothing, as long as I can tolerate these episodes of fatigue, shortness of
breath and palpitations. At the present time, I must be in “remission,” as I am not experiencing any symptoms. (However, when I take an EKG test, it always shows I have AFib.) My blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, etc., are all at good levels.
My question: In your opinion, if I choose to “tolerate” intermittent episodes of AFib, in the long run, would this not eventually lead to the development of congestive heart failure? — S.S.
ANSWER: The ma-
jor concern here, apart from reducing symptoms (which you don’t normally have), is the development of a stroke, so every person with atrial fibrillation is considered for anticoagulation. There are other concerns, including development of heart failure. People with atrial fibrillation who have frequent, fast heart rates are at risk for developing heart
failure. “Paroxysmal” AFib comes and goes: There is about the same risk of a stroke with paroxysmal AFib as with continuous AFib.
Apart from medication to reduce the risk of stroke, there are two major strategies called “rate control” and “rhythm control.” Cardioversion (using electricity to break the atrial fibrillation cycle and return the heart
to normal rhythm), followed by treatment with anti-arrhythmic drugs like dronaderone (Multaq), is the rhythm control strategy. Rhythm control is generally preferred in people at higher risk for heart disease, especially if they have not had AFib for more than a year.
People with symptoms, or a history of heart failure, generally do well with a rhythm control strategy. Otherwise, a rate control strategy is reasonable. As long as the rate is controlled properly (which may require you to wear a device to monitor your heart rate for a period of days or weeks), you are at low risk for developing heart failure.
It’s very important to find out how often these
episodes of palpitations are happening and how fast your heart rate is. Medications can be used to slow the heart rate down (the rate control strategy), but occasionally, people continue to have symptomatic episodes, despite medication for slowing down the heart rate, in which case the rhythm control strategy is

“Quantum Leap” seemed like a the
There’s a lot more complexity to life now, and we’re just exposed to a lot more I think it behooves us to make a show that can do right by ever ything that is out there. We do want to address a lot of things that people are thinking about and that surround us.
We’re not tr ying to answer questions, but to address them. We have a ver y diverse writers’ room and a ver y diverse cast, and ever ybody matters. And we want to make sure we’re making a show where ever ybody feels that.
Original “Quantum Leap” executive producers Donald Bellisario and Deborah Pratt also get credits on the revival. Do you hear from them much?
Don has been at all of our table reads over Zoom, and Deborah is ver y involved. She’s on the set pretty much ever y day and if she’s not, she’ll text us and just make sure we feel suppor ted. It’s really nice to have her presence, since we want to honor the original as much as we can, but we are creating a new show
You’re also in the movie “Top Gun: Maverick.” How is it for you to be a par t of such a blockbuster?
When I knew that project was coming around, I did ever ything I could to be a par t of it. It didn’t matter how big or small my role was.
The first “Top Gun” had a big impact on me and what I chose to do with my life, and Tom Cruise is obviously Tom Cruise so any oppor tunity to see him work up-close, I would have paid money to be a par t of that. The fact that they paid me money for it was crazy! I’m just so glad it worked out.

Death toll rises as Iranian protests spread
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) —
Clashes between Irani an security forces and protesters angry over the death of a 22-yearold woman in police custody have killed at least nine people since the violence erupted over the weekend, according to a tally Thursday by The Asso ciated Press.
The scope of Iran’s ongoing unrest, the worst in several years, still remains unclear as protesters in at least a dozen cities — venting anger over social repres sion and the country’s mounting crises — con tinue to encounter se curity and paramilitary forces. To prevent protests from spreading, Iran’s
biggest telecom opera tor largely shut down mobile internet access again Thursday, said Netblocks, a group that monitors internet ac cess, describing the re strictions as the most severe since 2019.
In a country where radio and television sta tions already are statecontrolled and journal ists regularly face the threat of arrest, the paramilitary Revolu tionary Guard urged the judiciary on Thursday to prosecute “anyone who spreads fake news and rumors” on social media about the unrest. Widespread outages of Instagram and What sApp, which are used by protesters, also contin uedTheThursday.demonstrations

College football week 3 preview
By JOHN MARSHALL The Associated Press
Georgia and Alabama have held down the top two spots in the AP Top 25 the past three weeks and are a good bet to stay there after this weekend’s games.
The rest of the Southeastern Conference — at least the top half — is proving to be pretty good, too, but that could change with four of its eight ranked teams playing each other.
On Saturday, No. 10 Arkansas will play at No. 23 Texas A&M in Arlington, Texas, and No. 11 Tennessee is at No. 20 Florida.
The Razorbacks (3-0, 1-0 SEC) have made a steady rise since opening at No. 19 in the preseason poll, though are last in the SEC in pass defense, allowing 353 yards per game.
The Aggies (2-1) are hoping to get some offensive mojo going after scoring 34 combined
points against Appalachian State and No. 25 Miami. Texas A&M averages 313 total yards, last in the Florida’sSEC.hope is to throw a touchdown pass. Once known as the Fun ‘n’ Gun, the Gators (2-1, 0-1) have been Fun ‘n’ None — 0 TD passes in 77 attempts through three games.
The Vols (3-0) are favored but Florida has won 16 of the past 17 meetings, including the lastThefive. What to Watch rundown for this week of college football, presented by Regions Bank: BEST GAME No. 5 Clemson at No. 21 Wake Forest Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson has called Clemson the measuring stick in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Demon Deacons haven’t measured up to the Tigers in quite a while.Clawson is 0-8 against Clemson and
Wake Forest hasn’t won in the series since 2008, a stretch of 13 straight games. The Tigers have won the past four games by an average of 38 points, but oddsmakers are expecting this one to be closer — FanDuel has Clemson as a 7 1/2-point favorite.
HEISMAN WATCH Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud was a Heisman
Trophy finalist a year ago and has put himself in the conversation again this season.
The second-year starter has put up bigger numbers each passing week, topped by last week’s 367-yard, five-touchdown performance against Toledo. Stroud has thrown for 941 yards, completed nearly 73% of his
passes and has 11 TDs and no interceptions through three games.
Stroud and the thirdranked Buckeyes will get a tough test this week against Wisconsin, which is top 10 in total defense and scoring defense.

Royals re longtime executive Dayton Moore
KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP)
— The Kansas City Royals fired longtime executive Dayton Moore on Wednesday, ending the roller-coaster tenure of an influential general manager and president who took the club from perennial 100-game loser to two World Series and the 2015 championship before its quick return to mediocrity.Royalsowner John Sherman, who retained Moore after acquiring the club from David Glass in 2019, announced the move during a news conference at which Moore spoke briefly before quietly slipping out of the
“Iroom.think the objective is clear: It’s to compete again for championships, and we have to make sure we’re progressing toward that goal,” said Sherman, whose club was 30 games below .500 heading into its game against Minnesota.
“In 2022 we regressed,” Sherman said, “and that happens. It happens to great teams. But as I started talking to Dayton and others, I felt like we needed more change than was talked about, and that was a
big reason to make this one.”Sherman tried a mild shakeup to the front office last offseason, elevating Moore from general manager to president of baseball operations while giving J.J. Picollo the GM title. But the awkward splitting of jobs never worked out, and Sherman decided to move forward with Picollo handling all aspects of baseball tomakeithisagerwhetheroffseason,stretchbepectsthishe’stiveinnovativedepartmentbaseballpreparedbefore,andanbriefMooreheRoyalswhenpersonPicollooperations.wasthefirstMoorehiredhetookoverthein2006.“I’veknownJ.J.sincewas21yearsold,”saidduringhisremarks.“He’sincredibleleader,asI’vementionedhe’smorethantoleadtheoperationsinaveryandproduc-way.I’mproudthatcontinuedtogetopportunity.”Shermansaidheex-otherchangestodiscusseddowntheandintotheincludingtokeepman-MikeMathenyandcoachingstaff.ButwillbeuptoPicollotothosedecisions.“J.J.hasbeengreatworkwith,”Matheny

He has a great perspective on the system and what needs to be Mooredone.”was hired in 2006 and tasked with rebuilding an organization that had not reached the playoffs in more than two decades. He quickly followed the blueprint that he learned from longtime Braves executive John Schuerholz, investing in Latin America and the minor league system before spending on proven major league talent.Ittook most of another decade for the plan to work, but the Royals began to see progress with a winning record in 2013, when a wave of young players began to reach the majors. And the breakthrough came the following year, when a team built around Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas won the first of two consecutive AL pennants.
The Royals lost their first trip to the World Series to the San Francisco Giants in a dramatic seven-game series, but they finished the job the following year, beating the New
York Mets in five for their first championship since 1985.
“He’s a great guy, a great person,” said Royals catcher Salvador Perez, one of the stars of those championship years. “It’s hard, you know? I never thought that he was going to leave this organization.”For most of the people in the organization, Moore is the only boss they’ve ever “Everybodyknown.looks at us like baseball players,” Royals second baseman Nicky Lopez said, “but there’s a life out of baseball and he cared about it. He cares about us as people, which is something veryThespecial.”endof Moore’s tenure may have seemed abrupt Wednesday, but it was years in theHemaking.knew it would be impossible for the small-market organization to keep Hosmer and other stars as they hit free agency after their championship years, so after a middling 2016, the club be-
gan a nearly top-to-bottom rebuild.
It was slowed by poor drafts, lousy player development and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on baseball, and the Royals had consecutive 100-loss seasons. And when the club finally made strides last season, and some of its young talent graduated to the big leagues, it failed to capitalize on it. The Royals started slowly this season and never“Thererecovered.isagap right now between where we are and where we expected,” said Sherman, who owned a piece of the first-place Guardians before acquiring the Royals. “I felt like in 2021 we did make progress, and in 2022, that’s not how I feel.”
The organization Picollo is tasked with taking to the next level is better off than what Moore inherited 16 years ago: Infielder Bobby Witt Jr. is among the leading contenders for AL Rookie of the Year, and rookies such as Vinnie Pasquantino and MJ Melendez give
Kansas City a young core reminiscent of the group Hosmer and Moustakas one led.
Yet there are plenty of organization problems that Picollo must address.TheRoyals for years have struggled to develop pitching — their staff currently has the fourth-worst ERA in baseball and the worst WHIP by a wide margin, which led to the firing of pitching coordinator Jason Simontacchi earlier this season.
They have struggled to identify impact talent in the draft, consistently whiffing on first-round picks. That includes four chosen over a two-year span during their World Series years that failed to make a meaningful big league impact.
And they have struggled to keep up with the changing times, preferring old-school, anecdotal scouting methods to new-school analytics and data-driven decision-making that has leveled the playing field with big-market ballclubs.
