anta Claus and his white carriage drawn by a black horse, adorned with red and green lights, traversed the streets of Iola’s city square escorted by a parade of young kazooists Wednesday evening. Swarms of children and their families stretching the length of the block greeted Santa’s arrival to his toy shop on Madison Avenue with a gleeful rendition of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” More golden Christmas lights wrapped the trees on the courthouse lawn and lined the two-story skyline of Iola’s downtown. Once inside Santa’s Toy Shop, children who had waited in freezing temperatures — many for more than 2½ hours — sipped hot chocolate and snacked on cookies and candy canes. After sharing their Christmas wishes from Santa’s lap, children received their choice of toy from the elf manning the toy shop’s shelves. By the end of the night, more than 500 children and adults had walked through the toy shop’s doors. Hannah Fleming, 9, left carrying a large stuffed teddy bear. “I like the big things,” Fleming said of why she chose her present from Santa’s Toy Shop. She asked Santa for a baby doll that pees. Quote of the day Vol. 119, No. 40
A broken water line has shuttered the Pregnancy Resource Center of Southeast Kansas for the next few days, at least. The broken line was discovered Tuesday morning as PRC staffers arrived at their offices at 1 S. Jefferson Ave. A malfunctioning heater, coupled with temperatures that dipped below zero caused the water line to freeze, then fracture in three locations. The water line, which ran above the ceiling, caused water to cascade down walls and onto the floor. The damage was most extensive in the PRC office, in which a bookshelf filled with educational materials was exposed to the water. Several interior walls covered with drywall also will need major repairs, as will the center’s only restroom, noted Steve French, PRC Board of Directors president. “And that’s not even counting all of the insulation
Amputee gets suprise gift: electronic hands DERBY, Kan. (AP) — A southern Kansas woman whose hands and feet had to be amputated after she was shot during a robbery got an early Christmas gift — new electronic hands worth $260,000, courtesy of a businessman and his wife. Julie Dombo of Derby showed off her new hands Tuesday with her husband, a day after receiving them as a present from Koch Industries’ general counsel Mark Holden and his wife, The Wichita Eagle reported. Dombo was shot in the arm and chest during an August 2015 robbery at a Derby AT&T store. Because of medical issues that developed from the injuries while she was hospitalized doctors had to amputate portions of her arms and legs to save her life.
