Suzanne Nossel, chief executive officer of PEN America, said during a news briefing with re porters Monday.

Cheryl Lewis Hudson, an author and publisher specializing in children’s books celebrating Black culture and Black histo ry, said that book bans are about power and that they are nothing new. Still, increasing the size of Russia’s military involved in the cam paign isn’t enough by itself to reverse the mo mentum, said Korotch enko. “The issue isn’t the quantity (of sol diers) but the capacity to supply them with weapons and gear.”

Defense Minister Ser gei Shoigu told state TV the reservists wouldn’t be called up all at once under Putin’s partial mobilization. The order applies only to those with military experi ence and wouldn’t af fect students or others who haven’t previously served in the army, he said. The additional troops would be more than the approximately 180,000 that the U.S. estimated Russia had massed at Ukraine’s borders be fore the Feb. 24 invasion.

Ukraine, which declared a mobilization early in the war, now has around 700,000 in the field with months of training and has said it aims to create a million-strong army.

It’s not clear whether the mobilization — the country’s first since the Nazi invasion in World War II, accord ing to historians — will be enough to slow Ukraine’s advances on the battlefield. Kyiv now has more troops armed with advanced weapons supplied by the U.S. and itsGermanallies.

Russian military bloggers and influen tial pro-Kremlin figures have been urging Putin to massively expand the scale of the struggling offensive in Ukraine, which the Kremlin con tinues to call a “special military operation.” Otherwise, Russia risks more reverses faced with a much larger Ukrainian force that’s getting billions of dol lars of advanced West ern weaponry, they’ve warned.

Closed schools and remote learning have indeed had lasting negative effects. But what would have happened if students returned for in-person classes and waves of teachers and parents fell ill? Two people who wish to remain anonymous have claimed a $1.337 billion Mega Millions jackpot after a single ticket to the late July drawing was sold in a Chicago suburb, opting to take a lump sum payment of $780.5 million, lottery officials said Wednesday.TheIllinois Lottery said the prize for the July 29 drawing, which was the nation’s thirdlargest lottery prize, was claimed by two individuals who had agreed to split the prize if they won. The two, who followed the lead of the vast majority of winners who choose to remain anonymous, had until Sept. 27 to opt in favor of the lump sum payment, said Emilia Mazur, spokeswoman for Camelot Illinois, the private manager of the Illinois Lottery.

The jackpot grew so large because no one had matched the game’s six selected numbers since April 15. That’s 29 consecutive draws without a jackpot winner. Because nobody has won the Mega Millions jackpot since the July 29 drawing, the jackpot now stands at an estimated $301 million.

But I know a bunch of those young guys on their team, and they’re going to come in with a chip on their shoulder.”Tuesday was the first full day of practice for the 12-man teams on a Quail Hollow Club course that is familiar to most from hosting the Wells Fargo Championship most years, and the PGA Championship in 2017.

Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a double, then took third when Melendez tried to score and was thrown out by Twins left fielder Jake Cave on a bang-bang play at the plate.

Immelman is not willing to look back, whether it’s three years ago and the close call at Royal Melbourne or three weeks ago when the last of the players went over to LIV. He said all of the players who left — starting with good friend Louis Oosthuizen in June right up until Smith and Niemann after the Tour Championship — were in touch with him about their thinking and their decisions. And he said they all knew the ramifications.“Irespect those guys making those decisions,” he said. “I also do respect them for keeping me in the loop and making sure that I understand exactly where we’re at at all times so I could try and be as prepared as I could. Am I disappointed that they’re not able to be here? Absolutely.

The Twins appeared to be continuing their mastery of the Royals this season, too, when they jumped ahead 3-0 in the second on Matt Wallner’s run-scoring double and a two-run single by Carlos Correa.

grounded was to compete individually among a team setting.“It’s almost like we’re all going to compete against each other to get the most points we can on our team. We want the bragging rights on our own team,” he said.

“But we have the 12 guys here that we love and wanted to be here, and now we get to go. We get to go up against a strong American team. So we’re looking forward.”

Perez came through on the very next pitch, though, dumping the go-ahead double down the right-field line.

They nearly pushed another run across in the third, too, but Royals starter Zack Greinke struck out Gio Urshela and Cave, ending the threat while picking up his 1,000th strikeout

“He just swells in those situations,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “You need that guy who says, ‘OK, I’m going to take care of Kansasthis.’”City, which was swept in three games at Target Field last week, had lost 12 of its last 14 to the Twins.

Candace Flynn! Looking for a fun-loving girl to join your family? Come meet our 2-year-old Candace Flynn! This sweet pup is housebroken, does well on leash, and does well with other dogs and children, though she isn’t a fan of cats. Candace would love for her family to take her on trips out to the lake (or any body of water, really) so they could all play together. Her adoption fee is $100, which includes her spay, current vaccinations, microchipping and a departure bath.
