Food council targets hunger

MONARCH SENDOFF

By BOB JOHNSON The Iola Register

The Rev. David Meier of Humboldt told Allen County commissioners many residents are just one incident away from being in dire straits. Meier surmised that maybe half of Allen Countians have enough income to meet expenses, but “when something happens, like your car breaks down,” that puts their livelihood in jeopardy, he told commissioners at their meeting Tuesday. Stepping in to help is the Allen County GROW Food Policy Council, that means to supplement what already is being done with community pantries throughout the county. (GROW is an acronym for Growing Rural Opportunities Works.) The council is an initiative of Thrive Allen County. Damaris Kunkler, program chairman, and others, including Allen County Farm Bureau’s Debbie Bearden, visited governing bodies to collect ideas for providing nutritious food in ample supplies, as well as to hear concerns. Community gardens, commercial projects, farmers markets and similar things were mentioned. See COUNCIL | Page A3

At left, Lincoln Elementary School third-grader Issac Jordan blows gently on the wings of a monarch butterfly he and his fellow SAFE BASE students watched grow from a caterpillar over the past month as part of their monarch project. Jordan’s butterfly was one of only two to survive the process. The other belonged to Jefferson Elementary first-grader Lynsie Fehr, who was absent. Iolan’s career maintains family tradition By RICK DANLEY The Iola Register

Iolans worried that the town is forever losing its talented young people to the enticements of larger cities can find comfort in the example of Morgan Dieker. The 24-year-old University of Kansas graduate, and native Iolan, recently joined the staff at Iola Pharmacy after completing her professional licensing last summer. Dieker, whose father Jeff is a pharmacist and part owner of the downtown store, spent

her school-age years imbibing the neighborly air of the small-town pharmacy. “Everyone teases that I’ve worked here since I was 5, because I used to come in on the weekends with [my dad] and run the register with the older girls, and just hang out. I was always here.” The profession, though, didn’t have an automatic claim on the Iola High School grad. As a kid, Dieker watched as her dad was routinely called away from home for See DIEKER | Page A4

Ryan seeks GOP unity WASHINGTON (AP) — Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan is seeking unity in a place it’s rarely found, telling House Republicans he will serve as their speaker only if they embrace him by week’s end as their consensus candidate. It’s a big “if ” for a House GOP that’s careened from one crisis to another in recent years, with a compromise-averse band of hardliners forcing a partial government shutdown two years ago, ultimately driving out the current House speaker, and scaring off his No. 2. That left Ryan, the GOP’s 2012 vice presidential nominee, to get dragged reluctantly into seeking a job he never wanted. As he announced late Tuesday that he would seek the speakership, Ryan made clear that he would do so only with conditions. He wants the endorsement of the major caucuses of the House, including the hardline Freedom Caucus. That’s the group whose threats against Speaker John Boehner pushed him

Firefighting training Firefighters from Iola, Humboldt, Chanute, Yates Center, Anderson County and Neodesha gathered in Iola Tuesday for interior firefighting simulation training, sponsored by the University of Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute. The exercise took place in a specially outfitted trailer to simulate stove fires, bedroom fires and basement fires. Above, a group of firefighters wait for their turn in the burning trailer. At right, instructor Brian Welch explains a safety procedure. A second training session, near the Iola city warehouse on North Industrial Road, is set for Sunday. REGISTER/RICHARD LUKEN

Rep. Paul Ryan to announce he would resign by month’s end and forced Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to abruptly drop his campaign to replace him. Coming days will tell if Ryan can win their support or become their latest victim. “I came to the conclusion that this is a very dire moment, not just for Congress, not just for the Republican Party, but for our country. And I think our country is in desperate need of leadership,” Ryan said. “What I told members is if you can agree to these requests and if I can truly be a unifying figure, then I will gladly serve, and if I See RYAN | Page A2
