Given the immediate withholding and the possibility of further taxes if you don’t move the money into a new IRA before the 60 days are up, you’ve got much to consider before initiating an indirect rollover. Consequently, you should consult with a financial advisor and tax professional before you make this type of move.

• Trustee-to-trustee transfer or direct rollover You can ask the financial institution holding your IRA to move the money directly to another IRA. No taxes will be withheld from the amount transferred at the time of the transfer. This method is generally hassle-free, but some IRA sponsors will still only mail the check to your address of record, so you’d have to forward it to your new IRA.

In addition to a rollover from an existing IRA, you may someday want to move the money from your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan to an IRA. This can occur when you retire or change jobs, although if you do take on another job, you might have the options of leaving your 401(k) with your former employer or rolling it over into your new employer’s plan. However, if you do want to move your 401(k) funds into an IRA, you can make what’s known as a direct rollover, in which the admin istrator of your old retirement plan will send you a check made payable to the custodian of your IRA. No taxes will be withheld, but you need to get the funds transferred within 60 days to avoid any potential tax issues. You spend years contributing to your IRA and 401(k) — and for good reason. So, when it’s time to move that money, be careful and consider getting help from your financial and tax professionals. These funds can play a big role in your retirement income, so manage them wisely.

The NTSB, she said, has been pushing NHT SA to explore alcohol monitoring technology since 2012. “The faster the technology is imple mented the more lives that will be saved,” she said. The recommendation also calls for systems to monitor a driver’s behav ior, making sure they’re alert. If you’ve been contributing to an IRA, you’ve chosen a great way to save and invest for retirement. All IRAs have potential tax benefits and a range of investment possibilities, but not all IRA providers offer the same features. So, if you decide that your current IRA provider is charging higher fees than you’d like, or perhaps doesn’t offer as many investment choices as you want, then you might choose to move your IRA assets to another provider. How should you go about making this switch?

• Indirect rollover – If you take an indirect rollover, also known as a 60-day rollover, the assets from your existing IRA will be liquidated and the custodian or plan sponsor will send you a check or deposit the funds directly into your bank or brokerage account. This payment may be subject to withholding for federal taxes, and possibly state taxes, unless you opt out of withholding. You have 60 calendar days from the time the funds were withdrawn to deposit the money, including any amount withheld, into a new IRA. If you miss this 60-day deadline, the withdrawal may be taxable at your personal income tax rate, and it could also be subject to an early withdrawal penalty if you’re younger than 59½.

spoke to a group of high school students attending a civic leadership workshop on the importance of civ ic engagement. I told my grandmothers’ story as an example of why we cannot take our democracy and freedoms for granted.

My activism came from my family’s example, and that is where it needs to begin. Take your children or grandchildren with you to vote. Explain what the stakes are if we don’t as sume our responsibility to guard democracy at the ballot box as informed citi zens who can separate facts from fiction — something that high school and col lege debate taught me and that should be taught to ev ery student through media literacy or critical thinking activities.Whenwe vote and get our “I voted in ___ County” stickers, we also have an option to take a sticker that says, “I voted for a Vet”. I always pick one up to hon or my father and numerous veteran family members and friends. Since learning about my grandmothers, I silently think that I am also voting for them.

“Instead,” NPR wrote in 2020 when it shared her story, “Lela Mae and the others were unwitting pawns in a segrega tionist game.”

Despite their distaste for history, both Gov. Greg Abbott and his Florida counterpart Gov. Ron DeSantis are giving Americans a history lesson this week. Their spiteful and costly busing, and now flying, schemes that are transporting migrants across the country, reportedly with misleading promises about jobs and hous ing, are drawing comparisons to a deceitful and racist inter state busing scheme in the ear ly After1960s. DeSantis chartered two flights full of migrants this week from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard, the John F. Kennedy Library in near by Boston shared on Twitter photos of old newspaper clip pings and archival material about the Reverse Freedom Rides, when the pro-segrega tion White Citizens’ Council gave Black families one-way tickets north in an effort to “embarrass Northern liberals and humiliate Black people.”

Little known fact: 1907 Expatriation Act voided US women’s citizenship

Yet, while border enforce ment spending has ballooned in the past two decades with little effect on undocumented immigration, an outdated feefor-service funding model for USCIS, the agency responsible for adjudicating legal immi gration cases (including work permits for asylum seekers), has left it understaffed, under resourced and overwhelmed by a backlog numbering in the millions.Statewide, Abbott’s busing has been viewed with a mix of opinions. A recent poll from Texas Polling Project showed that overall, 52 percent of Tex ans support Abbott’s busing policy. It’s also what immigra tion advocates want in some ways.“You’re actually creating a free program that if a Demo crat would have said it, [Ab bott] would have gone against it,” Abel Nuñez, executive di rector of the Central Ameri can Resource Center, told the Texas Tribune earlier this month.Butthe way Abbott and his Republican cohorts have gone about this, with little to no co ordination, alarmist rhetoric and hands deep in the taxpay ers’ pockets is wasteful and hateful.

Is that the inspiration be hind the two buses with 75 to 100 migrants Abbott sent this week — not to be outdone by Florida — to Vice President Kamala Harris’ house in Washington, D.C.?

To hear Abbott tell it, he

The total cost of his bus ser vice is above $14 million now, and, as he promises, there’s more where that came from — just check your pockets and the rest of the state services he’s raided for Operation Lone Star.At a cost of roughly $1,700 per person, Abbott’s busing scheme has skirted questions of legality by maintaining that it’s all voluntary. And in fact, non-profits have done this for years, coordinating with other non-profits to help migrants get closer to family or services they might need.

~ Journalism that makes a difference

My husband and I were in Germany recently, and the tour guides who showed Holocaust memorials made a point that all German students are required to take a course on the Holo caust so that it never hap pens again. Museums in Germany do not omit key facts about Nazi atrocities.

ABBOTT’S BUSING strate gy has more in common with the Reverse Freedom Rides than it does with the work non-profits have done for years along the border to ac commodate shifting flows and needs there.

The federal government has also transported migrants on planes to the great dismay of the Biden administration’s critics. But increasingly, re porting suggests that the thou sands of migrants getting on Abbott’s buses are lured with false information, or at least misunderstandings, about what waits for them on the other side, including promises of work authorization, hous ing and other services. And there seems to be little com munication with cities and providers — no doubt an in tentional oversight to increase the chaos of it all.

A Venezuelan migrant reacts as he is led onto a bus at St. Andrews Episcopal Church on Friday, Sept. 16, in Edgartown, Mass., on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. A group of 48 migrants was flown to the island from Texas earlier this week, leaving them stranded. They were transferred to a military base in Cape Cod. MATIAS J. OCNER/MCT

For those who experienced a loss of a right — even tem porarily — and those who lived through Nazism and fascism, the importance of voting and civic engage ment was not questioned.

Abbott/DeSantis migrant transport scheme reeks of Jim Crow racism

I then ask what all of these questions have in common, and answer that elected members of a leg islative body affect all of them. Politics touches ev ery aspect of our daily lives. Too often we forget that it isn’t just the big issues that affect us, but everything in cluding the air we breathe and the water we drink — assuming there is water in the future through good po litical decisions.

As an educator and author who believes in providing historical context, includ ing what I did not learn in school, I am troubled by our country’s desire to hide the darker parts of our history, unlike the Germans. I am also troubled that too many young people are not learn ing about government in ways that help them under stand how politicians affect every aspect of their lives.

When Kansans go to the polls Nov. 8, it will mark the 110th anniversary of Kansas women having full voting rights in statewide and federal elections — eight years before the 19th Amendment.Idon’t follow “19th Amendment” with “giving all American women the right to vote,” because it did not. It mainly enfran chised white women. Left out were Native Americans and Asians by law, African American women through suppression and some mar ried women through citi zenshipRevocationrevocation.of citizen ship! How can that be? The answer is a little-known law in effect between 1907 and 1922 — the Expatria tion Act of 1907. The act revoked citizenship from women — and not men — who married a noncitizen. Why were only women sub jected to the law? The an swer is quite simply that we had not fully escaped colo nial-era coverture laws that considered a woman’s legal rights and identity to be subsumed by her husband. In other words, she was civ illy dead. Thus, a woman who married a foreigner was assumed to profess loy alty to her husband’s king and country and take on his citizenship.Amoreimportant ques tion may be, why did we not learn about this law in school? Fortunately, the National Archives is cor recting the omission with a display and article found online. My grandmothers were among the disenfranchised. They were 22 and 21 in 1920 but ineligible to vote. My paternal grandmother was born in Chicopee, Kansas, and my maternal grand mother, who arrived in the U.S. as a child, was natural ized with her parents. When the law was rescinded in 1922 through the Cable Act, which partially reversed the 1907 law, their citizen ship was not restored. They had to go through natural ization.Iknew none of this until a few years ago, when some thing in a political conver sation caused my mother to impart these facts. Since then, I found one of my grandmother’s naturaliza tion papers and was amused that her prior citizenship was listed as “Italian” just like my grandfather’s, even though she never set foot in the country and all other papers listed her birthplace as AsKansas.Igrew up, election day was almost sacred in my family. My father, a Navy and World War II veteran, took the day off to tend to my sisters and me while my mother worked on the election board. While we were in school, he took my grandparents to vote. When we got home from school, we went out to eat and then took dinner to my mother. While my father voted, he gave us sample ballots on thin blue or yellow paper so that we could also “vote.”

Opinion A5 The Iola Register Wednesday, September 21, 2022

Critics saw it for what it was right away: a shameful politi cal stunt, trafficking in, as one Massachusetts mayor put it at the time, “human lives and misery.”Angered by the Supreme Court’s decision ending school segregation, Southern ers organized the network of citizens’ councils in protest. They met in Mississippi just two months after the decision and earned themselves the nickname “uptown Klan” for their restraint in not lynching people outright, but instead imagining up cruel and racist schemes to assert their own presumed superiority, some times with state support.

DESANTIS APPEARS to have taken the dysfunction to a new level. He didn’t coordi nate with Abbott, and appears to have disregarded steps Texas has taken to inform mi grants of their destinations and get their full consent. The migrants flown to Martha’s Vineyard by Florida said they were misled, believing they were going someplace to get jobs and other services. As Ra chel Self, a Boston immigra tion attorney, put it, “ensur ing that no help awaited the migrants at all was the entire point.”Asylum seekers, like the ones being bused out of state, have a right to be here while they await a court hearing. This is a legal process and their presence here is, by definition, not illegal. With out a legal claim to be here, transporting undocumented migrants is against feder al law. Abbott conveniently leaves that out of his head line-baiting tactics in favor of a version of the border that is overrun by cartels and drugs, conflating law-abiding people withWhere’dcriminals.heget the inspira tion to embarrass and humili ate? It sounds so familiar. Houston Chronicle

Yet, it is undeniable that this stunt, beyond serving Abbott’s re-election campaign, has sparked an important and nec essary national conversation on our country’s outdated im migration system. The crisis is not the people themselves seeking to solicit asylum in the United States, as Abbott is trying to argue, but rather our inability to adapt a legal immigration system that rests on a 1965 law and that was last significantly updated in 1990 to the rapidly changing needs of 21st century migration.

simply wanted to make sure Harris and President Biden saw the border “firsthand,” with the threat that “there’s more where that came from.”

Already terrorized in the South, some 200 Black people took the chance at a better life up North in 1962 when the White Citizens’ Council enact ed its plan. Lela Mae Williams was one of them, tricked into a trip north with the promise that President John Kenne dy himself would be there to greet her and her children. Af ter three days on the bus, she arrived outside his summer home in Hyannis, Mass. to dis cover otherwise. Not only was the president not there, there was no job or housing either.

I always start such a speech with a series of questions and a show of hands: How many of you drive a car? How many of you plan on post-secondary education? How many of you worry about the cost? How many of you have a job? How many of you eat in restaurants or drink wa ter? Of course, every hand goes up.
