Details of Iolan’s homicide emerge as hearing begins
By RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register
The circumstances surrounding the March 2016 killing of Iolan Shawn Cook were revealed in frequently graphic testimony Tuesday in an Allen County courtroom. A series of witnesses
spoke about the events leading up to, during and following Cook’s March 13, 2016, death. C h a r g e d Shawn Cook were Joshua Knapp, Rhonda Jackson
and James Myers, all of whom are charged with firstdegree murder in Cook’s death. Much of the testimony came from Amber Boeken, who formerly had been charged with first-degree murder in the case, but has agreed to testify against her co-defendants as part of a
plea deal. M a g i s trate Judge Tod Davis allowed the consolidated preliminary hearing at the request of Joshua Knapp Allen County Attorney Jerry Hathaway.
The preliminary hearing is expected to conclude today. Afterward, Davis will decide whether Knapp, Myers and Jackson should be bound over for trial. BOEKEN testified about her role in the killing, with a key part of her testimony See HEARING | Page A4

Salmonella linked to hobby farms By SHELLIE SMITLEY The Iola Register
Forty-seven states have been affected by a recent outbreak of salmonella infections linked to live poultry. Reports of outbreaks invoving several types of the disease began January 4. By mid-May 71 people had been hospitalized out of 379 cases reported nationwide, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Five cases have been reported in Kansas. Salmonella outbreaks have increased in recent years as backyard flocks have increased in popularity. In 2016, a record number of salmonella cases linked to poultry were reported. Chicks, ducklings, and other live poultry that look healthy and clean can still carry salmonella bacteria, according to the CDC. Handling live poultry is not recommended for children younger than 5 years old, adults older than 65, and people with compromised immune systems. Handwashing is the primary preventative measure to avoid the infection. The CDC also recommends hobby farmers have a pair of shoes they wear solely for taking care of the birds and do not wear in their own homes. The symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal cramps.

Allen County commissioners will gauge public interest in evening meetings, also whether having some of those sessions on the road would find favor. A constituent proposed evening meetings to give the public better opportunities to hear first hand what commissioners discuss and do, and, when deemed appropriate, to participate. A schedule has yet to be developed, but likelihood is night meetings will be rotated among See MEET| Page A2
Belgium on edge after failed bombing BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgium tightened security even more today to counter fears that lone attackers could strike anywhere and at any time, a day after a failed bombing by a man shouting “Allahu akbar” at a Brussels train station put the nation on edge. A soldier killed the attacker, who had tried to set off a powerful nail bomb that could have led to fatalities among the two dozen or so travelers checking train times on a public display board at Brussels Central Station on Tuesday, officials said. Similar attacks by lone assailants causing maximum mayhem but few victims have happened in London and Paris in the past couple of days, putting European capitals on alert on the eve of the busy summer tourist season. The Brussels attacker was a 36-year-old Moroccan national not known to au-
thorities for being involved in terror activities, federal magistrate Eric Van der Sypt told reporters. He declined to say if the man had a criminal record. The man charged soldiers at Brussels Central Station after his suitcase, containing nails and gas canisters, failed to fully explode, Van der Sypt said. The man then shouted “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” before a soldier shot him dead, the magistrate said. Nobody else was injured. “It was clear he wanted to cause much more damage than what happened,” Van der Sypt said. “The bag exploded twice but it could have been a lot worse.” Witness Remy Bonnaffe had just walked away from the timetable board when he heard a loud bang and saw a flame while he was on his phone. Still unsure whether it was an attack, he took time to take a photo but dashed

Press, painting an image of the scope of carnage that could have happened. Van der Sypt said the man was from the Molenbeek neighborhood, the home and See BRUSSELS | Page A2
Kushner arrives to seek Israeli-Palestinian breakthrough JERUSALEM (AP) — President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and chief Middle East adviser, Jared Kushner, arrived today for a daylong visit aimed at restarting longdormant Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Kushner was to meet with
