School upgrade gets review

GAS — Gas council members took another step, albeit a small one, toward refitting the old Gas School as a community center Tuesday evening. After reviewing an upgrade proposal they agreed to pay Shoeb Uddin of Sunflower Design, Topeka, $2,000 to develop more specific plans. Uddin told council members a preliminary budget of $252,100 could change as more exacting plans were drawn, and when bids were opened. They looked at financing through a Community Development Block Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce, represented at the

meeting by Barbara Anderson. If that were to occur in full, Gas would be responsible for half, or $125,050, with part perhaps retired through in-kind labor. The major improvement would be a new roof, estimated at $56,000 to $71,000, depending on material and whether decoration were a part; a wheelchair lift, $30,000; upgrades to a restroom so it complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act, $15,000; replacement of a sidewalk along the west side, $10,000, and roof draining and grading, $16,000. Another $16,000 would be set aside for miscellaneous items, which Uddin said popped up with each inspection. The total grew with addition of $50,100 for engineer-

COUNTY COMMISSION

Phone costs compared By BOB JOHNSON The Iola Register

An impromptu visit by Iola Administrator Carl Slaugh to Tuesday’s commission meeting may lead to Allen County saving money on its telephone service. County Clerk Sherrie Riebel told commissioners monthly AT&T charges were going up, from $5.25 to $6 per station (per phone) and $6 to $7.80 for line charges. The charges would be effective for three years.

He’s the second to file for the seat held by outgoing Dick Works, who announced previously he would not seek re-election. Daniels joins Moran’s James Mueller as candidates, thus ensuring an Aug. 5 primary vote. (Both

are Republicans.) Candidates have until June 2 to file. Wo rk s ’ seat covers much of the southern and eastern portions of Allen County, including Jerry Daniels Humboldt, Moran, Elsmore and SavonSee DANIELS | Page A2

miles southwest of Iola, and moved Scheibmeir up the bank to an Eagle Med helicopter. He was flown directly to KU Med, where surgery was performed Monday evening. Family friends told the Register infection was a concern as Scheibmeir recovers. Murphy said many responders had a role in getting Scheibmeir on his way to the medical center. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks is investigating the accident.

Cox Communications was mentioned as an alternative, and when Slaugh sauntered in he was asked about Iola’s phone system. “We saved about $1,500 a month by going to Cox,” Slaugh said. Also, he noted that Cox agreed to install a fiber optic line to the water plant free of charge, which AT&T had proposed to do for $25,000. The fiber optic line supports upgrades in Internet connections the city deemed neces-

ing, architectural design, construction management and grant administration, as well as $30,000 for contingencies. Attracting a grant isn’t a given, and some council members weren’t ready to sign off anytime soon on a $125,100 obligation. Mayor Darrell Catron noted the council had made a conscious effort to keep the city’s property tax levy as low as possible, building reserves over the years. “We’ve about spent down our reserves with the new storm shelter,” near the school, he said. It cost $57,000. Alternatives were mentioned. Uddin said a loan, with an interest rate of 4 to 4½ percent, might be available from

Jerry Scheibmeir, 59, Humboldt, was in critical condition at the University of Kansas Medical Center Tuesday afternoon following surgery to remove a four-inch-diameter limb from his midsection. Sheriff Bryan Murphy said Scheibmeir and three friends were fishing in the Neosho River when their boat ran afoul of brush and a protruding limb struck and penetrated Scheibmeir’s body.
