A group of about 18 land owners from Allen and An derson counties voiced their opposition to a transmission line project that will cut across Southeast Kansas from the Wolf Creek power plant to PropertyMissouri.owners Brian Regehr from Allen County and Rochelle McGhee Smart from Anderson County spoke on behalf of the group at Tuesday’s Allen County commission meeting. They asked commission ers for their support as they work to influence the route of the transmission lines built by NextEra Energy, the company selected to con struct the project. The line is expected to re duce congestion on existing power lines, which provides savings in energy costs as power is able to move more efficiently. NextEra says the project will save customers about $24 million in energy costs in the first year and another $377 million over the next 40 years, as well as provide $28 million in tax revenue over 40 years. But the landowners said they are concerned about high-voltage lines near their homes, agriculture buildings and livestock herds. They said studies have shown adverse health effects, including leukemia and other types of cancer, from exposure to electro magnetic fields, but the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says such studies areRegehrinconclusive.alsosaid he is upset because NextEra crews have gone onto his property with out prior notice, sometimes causing damage. He worries about stray voltage that could zap his cattle or a nearby pond. Piqua steeple under repair A crew from Boren’s Roofing removed a copper ball that previously held a metal cross on top of the steeple of the St. Martin’s Catholic Church. The cross and ball were damaged by a December thunderstorm, and the cross fell to the ground overnight Tuesday. Cory Boren, shown above, was lifted to the top of the steeple via a crane to take measurements and gauge the damage. Then, Boren’s employee Ricardo Guerrero rode in the basket to remove the ball, seal the top of the stee ple so it couldn’t be penetrated by rain, and repair damaged shingles. The hope is to make more permanent repairs, per haps with metal, before the church’s centennial in November.

The historic heat wave that’s smothered western Europe this summer has caused transportation chaos. Railroad tracks warped, airport runways failed and key roads buckled. On July 18, the busy A14 highway in Cambridge, England, was shut down after developing a bizarre ridge that, while enticing to skateboarders, would be calamitous to fast-moving cars and their passengers. As it happens, the same thing has been occurring across America, Australia, China andWithAfrica.average temperatures rising and heat waves become more frequent and intense, infrastructure and in particular roads are increasingly vulnerable to human-induced global warming. A 2017 study assessing the impacts of the climate crisis on critical infrastructure found that by 2080, heat waves would account for about 92% of total hazard damage in Europe’s transport sector alone, in large part because the roads were built for coolerAnothertimes.study looked at data from weather stations used to determine the proper composition of local roads. It estimated around 35% of them used materials unsuited to the actual climate. “The maximum temperatures that civil engineers have been using in design are now being surpassed much more frequently,” said Amit Bhasin, a director of the University of Texas Center for Transport Research. “That’s when the design starts falling apart.”Supply chains depend on vehicles with wheels to get goods, people and pretty much everything else everywhere. Ships, trains and planes may do much of the long hauling, but those new jeans you ordered online will arrive at your door by van. As roads fail more often, it’s becoming clear how the economic cost of inaction could quickly addTheup. good news though is that the technology exists to sufficiently harden what’s arguably the most critical of infrastructure. The bad news is it will require government at all levels to spend a lot of money upfront. Most if not all the ways global warming has changed the climate are having a deleterious effect on roads everywhere. Besides extreme heat, heavier rainfall and flooding triggered by the phenomenon can quickly erode highways and paved roads while obliterating those made of gravel and dirt. The cost of repair can be steep: The devastating floods in Australia between 2010 to 2014 cost the government an estimated $6.4 billion in repairs to the road network.Intraditionally colder places, the problem is thawing. According to a report from the Canadian Climate Institute, more than half of the country’s winter roads in its northern regions, built on frozen lakes and rivers each fall, may in 30 years become unusable or impossible to Nearlybuild. all could be gone by 2080, cutting off whole regions from critical services. In Yukon, the cost to all-season roads largely made from gravel could total $1.6 billion over the next two decades due to permafrost degradation. An action-reaction cycle has marked Mr. Navalny’s long crusade against the Putin regime’s corruption and despotism: He criticiz es, Mr. Putin punishes. And yet Mr. Navalny perseveres. He passes messages through lawyers and supporters, and they post them on Twitter. “Greetings from solitary confinement,” his account tweeted Monday. “The Kremlin wants to see its Gulag composed of silent slaves. Susan Lynn editorRegister The owners of Possibility Custom Homes in Magnolia, Texas, are proud of the foun dational role they believe God’s Word has played in their lives. They’re so proud of it that, for more than a decade now, they’ve been en casing a Bible in the founda tion of every new home they build. It’s the kind of founda tion they believe every family deserves. As concrete pours down the chute of the mix ing truck into the foundation form boards, a laborer steps forward with a soft-cover Bi ble in hand, leans over, and submerges the book into the moist aggregate. Embedding the written text in hardening concrete is a pretty sure way to mummify it permanently. Biblical literalists, who in some circles are called fun damentalists or inerrantists, may be able to appreciate this unique form of concretizing the Word more than others of us. They’re known to revere the Bible as much as the mes sage within it. Their version of faith celebrates the factu al accuracy of every verse, fixating on the text as some thing of a frozen body of an cient knowledge. Literalists like to insist on one reading for all time. As far as they’re concerned, the text is settled, closed, and beyond interpre tation.Judicial originalism, I would argue, is something of a younger cousin to biblical literalism. Adherents to the originalist doctrine expect jurists to follow the exact words of the Constitution, the meaning of which they believe was locked into place (or concretized) at the time they were written. Antonin Scalia, who championed the modern surge of originalism as much as anyone, liked to say that the Constitution is about “rigidifying things.”

And yet, we have no choice but to inter pret. The nature of language is such that no word commu nicates just one idea or mean ing in every context where it’s used. “Nobody’s reading is final or inerrant,” writes Walter Brueggemann about scripture. “All biblical inter pretation is inescapably pro visional and inevitably dispu tatious.”Ifonly more originalists in our day could appropriate the idea of theologian Karl Barth for their own Constitution al work. “I take the Bible far too seriously,” said Barth, “to take it literally.” Peter Marty is the editor/ publisher of The Christian Century and pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Daven port, Iowa.

REGISTER/VICKIE MOSS Willis stepped up to the plate One year after the 2014 school bond issue was soundly defeated, thenschool board president Tony Leavitt recruited Dan Wil lis to run for a seat on the board.“Iwish I could say it was all about education,” Wil lis said in a Register article from 2019. “But that school bond issue was the biggest driver.”After Willis secured the seat, Leavitt had another di rective.Because he was the only school board member who had voted against the 2014 bond issue, Leavitt told him it was his duty to form a community-led effort to study school facilities. “So I accepted, and I ha ven’t seen my wife or son since,” he joked at the time. The board began working on a strategic plan to review school facilities with about 50 members of the commu nity. From that grew a facil ities action team and ulti mately steering committees. Also on board was Stacey Fager, the new superinten dent of schools. The team was methodical in its approach. And careful with feelings still raw about the 2014 defeat. “It was disadvantaged at the beginning,” Willis opined. “It was a rushed project that was slammed down our throat.” Willis knew this next time around the board needed to be more thorough and trans parent in its findings. In 2017, Willis took over as school board president and the momentum grew. That November, a steering com mittee met for the first time for an in-depth study of the district’s facilities. It includ ed some of the 2014 “yes” voters and “no” voters, sin gle moms, retirees, farmers, business owners and others. Willis organized the meet ings but otherwise stepped back to let residents lead the way.“Boy, did we find some leaders out of that group,” Willis said. “The neatest thing out of that process was the people in their 20s and 30s who stepped up. As you get older, it scares you to wonder about the people be hind you, how we’re going to build that next generation. But our future as a commu nity is in good hands, much better than I ever dreamed.”

— Last week’s attack on author Salman Rushdie and the indictment of an Iranian national in a plot to kill former national security adviser John Bolton have given the Biden administration new headaches as it attempts to negotiate a return to the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran. A resolution may be tantalizingly close. But as the U.S. and Europe weigh Iran’s latest response to an EU proposal described as the West’s final offer, the administration faces new and potentially insurmountable domestic political hurdles to forging a lasting agreement. Deal critics in Congress who have long vowed to blow up any pact have ratcheted up their opposition to negotiations with a country whose leadership has refused to rescind the death threats against Rushdie or Bolton. Iran also vows to avenge the Trump administration’s 2020 assassination of a top Iranian general by killing former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Iran envoy Brian Hook, both of whom remain under 24/7 taxpayer-paid security protection.
“This is a tougher deal to sell than the 2015 deal in that this time around there are no illusions that it will serve to moderate Iranian behavior or lead to greater U.S.-Iran cooperation,” said Karim Sadjadpour, an Iran expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “The Iranian government stands to get tens of billions in sanctions relief, and the organizing principle of the regime will continue to be opposition to the United States and violence against its critics, both at home and abroad,” he said.Iran has denied any link with Rushdie’s alleged attacker, an American citizen who was indicted for attempted murder and has pleaded not guilty in the Aug. 12 stabbing at a literary event in Western New York. a few hours a month — if enough teams of volunteers could be found. The group also would need somebody on hand at the recycling drop-off location to sort through the cardboard, plastics, metal or glass, and to operate the baler. The new baler is significantly more efficient than the one in use when it was operated by the Rotarians, Davis said. On top of that, Davis encouraged those in the audience to be willing to lobby their local city and county leaders, “to let them know the people in Allen County are willing to support recycling.”Davis compared recycling to other “quality-of-life” services operated by local municipalities.Iolaand Humboldt, for example, operate swimming pools each summer, knowing from the start they will not earn enough money to pay for the cost of filling and treating the pool water, hiring lifeguards and buying chemicals. But they do it anyway. The same goes for parks, Davis continued. “A city does not make any money having a park,” he said. “It’s a quality of life issue. They know it’s going to be a better place to live in a community with a park.”Davis acknowledged a mass recycling effort, if it were to be funded by the county or by a community, will likely never turn a “Theprofit.whole idea behind this was not to make money,” he continued. But it’s still a wise investment, Davis contended.Forone, any materials sent to a recycling center are materials kept out of the Allen County Landfill. Since 2019, when the Rotarians expanded their recycling efforts to include plastics and glass, the group brought in nearly 1 million pounds of cardboard, 160,000 pounds of paper and 90,000 pounds of various forms of plastic and 120,000 pounds of glass.“That’s not an insignificant number,” Davis noted.Totals for aluminum and tin weren’t collected, he added, because those materials usually were just taken straight to Ray’s Metal Depot in LaHarpe, with proceeds handed over to Iola’s school“Ourdistrict.efforts have been a success,” Davis said. “They’ve kept a lot of recyclables out of our landfill.”
A fire at the Allen County Landfill this week may have been caused by lithium batteries, Public Works Director Mitch Garner said. There’s no way to know exactly what caused the fire, Garner said, but he suspects it may have come from batteries in a discarded toy or cell phone. Batteries are not supposed to be thrown away, but not everyone realizes that also applies to smaller, lithium batteries found in various devices. When the trash is compacted, those batteries can create a spark that smolders and then catches the other trash on fire. Garner was called to the landfill fire a little after 11 p.m. Wednesday. It was not a big fire, he said, and a crew with the LaHarpe Volunteer Fire Department was able to extinguish the blaze in a couple of hours. Garner and crews remained on the scene until about 4 a.m. to make sure it was fully extinguished.Garnersaid he planned to talk to county commissioners about the fire on Tuesday. It’s the second fire at the landfill in recent months. Several area fire departments were called to fight a blaze on July 3, which Garner suspected may have been caused by strayLandfifireworks.llfires are of special concern because of the amount of methane gas created as trash decomposes.

WHILE it may be difficult to convince a municipality to take on a service that, in a best-case scenario, is a break-even proposition, Iola may be different, DavisThat’ssaid.because the city already has the basic infrastructure in place for a large-scale recycling effort in that city crews already travel to every residence in town twice a week for trash pick-up. “I have never lived anyplace where we have trash pickup twice a week,” he said. “It’s a very unique situation we have Perhapshere.”a system could be arranged in which one of those days for pick-up is dedicated for recyclables, Davis offered.Asis, the city essentially disincentives any kind of recycling effort, he“Everyonecontinued. in Iola is conditioned to say ‘I can throw away as much as I want because they’re gonna come pick it up twice a week,’” Davis said, “and that this landfill will last forever.” The Allen County Landfill is equipped to last for generations, he admitted, because much of the limestone in the quarry can be crushed and used for county road“We’verepair.got a great big landfill, and we keep making more room in it,” Davis said. “I’ve heard all sorts of figures. That in 100 years, this landfill will still be viable.”Yet,Davis also notes visiting with long-time Allen Countians who recalled a time when driving by the landfill site was hardly noteworthy. “Unless the wind was blowing a certain direction, you may not even realize the landfill was there,” Davis said. “I don’t think you can miss it any more.” A growing mound of trash-covered dirt becomes more prominent by the day, Davis said, “and there’s plastic bags against all the fences. “It would be great if we could convince the county and the cities in Allen County that there are enough people in this county who will support recycling,” he said.

BOSTON (AP) — Three men, including a Mafia hitman, have been charged in the killing of notorious Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger in a West Virginia prison, the Justice Department said Thursday. The charges against Fotios “Freddy” Geas, Paul J. DeCologero and Sean McKinnon come nearly four years after Bulger’s killing, which raised questions about why the known “snitch” was placed in the general population instead of more protective housing. The men were charged with conspiracy to commit first degreeBulgermurder.was beaten to death at USP Hazelton in October 2018 hours after he was transferred from a prison in Florida, where he had been serving a life sentence for 11 murders and other crimes. Prosecutors allege Geas and DeCologero struck Bulger in the head multiple times and caused his death. The Justice Department has also charged Geas and DeCologero with aiding and abetting first degree murder, along with assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Geas faces a separate charge for murder by a federal inmate serving a life sentence, and McKinnon is charged separately with making false statements to a federal agent. Geas and DeCologero were identified as suspects shortly after Bulger’s death, according to law enforcement officials at the time, but they remained uncharged as the investigation dragged on for years. They were placed in solitary confinement throughout the probe, family members told The Boston Globe. Gaes remains as a prison in Hazelton and DeCologero is being held in another federal prison facility. McKinnon, who prosecutors say was on federal supervised release when the indictment was handed down, was arrested Thursday in Florida.Bulger’s family had previously filed a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Prisons and 30 unnamed employees of the prison system, alleging they failed to protect him. Bulger was the third inmate killed in six months at USP Hazelton, where workers and advocates had long been warning about dangerous conditions. Bulger, who ran the largely Irish mob in Boston in the 1970s and ‘80s, served as an FBI informant who ratted on his gang’s main rival in an era when bringing down the Mafia was a top national priority for the FBI. He later became one of the nation’s most-wanted fugitives.

The Humboldt Speedway holds more memories than can ever be told. The track operates in the summer months every Friday night and offers stock car racing fans of all kinds a unique experience. The Humboldt Speedway sits on 29 acres east of Humboldt and was purchased by the Whitworth family in 1990. The Whitworths sold the speedway this year to JR and Kati Sartain of F.O.E. Enterprises.JohnAllen operates much of the Speedway and race day operations involved with putting on a successful show that people will enjoy. Allen says one of his main goals is to make the Humboldt Speedway a destination for all to enjoy. A former stock car racer, Allen, grew up in Chanute where his family owned and operated a speed shop called Allen’s Automotives. After racing, he joined the Sartains in owning speedways.“I think the Humboldt Speedway is a great asset to the community. It brings in a lot of people from outside our local economy on race weekends. It is also a great place to meet your friends and enjoy a great night of family fun. It has become a destination for people all over the United States and Canada,” said Allen. The season kicks off every March with drivers from all across the country as well as Canada coming to compete in the Battle of the Bullring and the King of America events. The Bullring event is mainly for the B-modified class of stock cars which has some of the best drivers around.TheKing of America race involves some of the fastest Modified drivers in the country. The season concludes with the World of Outlaws Late Models making an appearance on Oct. 21, as well as a show at the 81 Speedway in Wichita on Saturday night. The different racing classifications include B-mods, Midwest mods, Dirt Super Late Models, USRA Modified and Primal Jerky Midwest Mods. depth with junior Keenan Garber and freshman RJ Garcia getting rave reviews in camp, and Ole Miss transfer Jadon Jackson fighting for playing time. GETTING SPECIAL Knowles returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns last season while Brooks has returned three punts for touchdowns, and that gives the Wildcats a big advantage on special teams. They also have Chris Tennant back to handle kicking duties and Ty Zentner back to handle punts. THE SCHEDULE The Wildcats should be comfortable favorites in their first three games against South Dakota, former Big 12 rival Missouri and Tulane. And if they get off to a 3-0 start, that would set up a big showdown at No. 9 Oklahoma to start conference play. The rest of the schedule sets up favorably for the Wildcats. They get Oklahoma State and Texas at home, though they do visit Baylor, and finish with games against West Virginia and Kansas in which they should be favorites.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — The expectations when Kansas State coach Chris Klieman was plying his trade at North Dakota State began and ended with winning the FCS national championship, and he managed to pull off the feat four times in fiveWhileyears.they’ll never be so lofty with the Wildcats, that doesn’t mean soaring expectations do not exist in Manhattan.Especially this season. After Klieman’s second eight-win season in his first three years, the Wildcats are poised to push Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas for the top of the Big 12 this season. They have All-America candidate Deuce Vaughn in the backfield, potential first-round draft pick Felix Anudike-Uzomah at defensive end, and a bevy of talent just about everywhere else on the Thatroster.includes quarterback, where Nebraska transfer Adrian Martinez is taking over for the graduated Skyler Thompson, and is intent on overcoming the turnover trouble that plagued his otherwise prolific passing numbers with the Huskers. “We have very optimistic, high expectations, as everybody does this time of year,” Klieman said, “but we have a lot of work to do. Have a number of guys back on both sides of the ball. But as the landscape of college football is right now, it’s going to be new players that you’ve got to mesh with the returning players that are going to be the key to your success.” Klieman might as well have been calling out Martinez by Duringname.his four seasons at Nebraska, he threw for 8,491 yards and 45 touchdowns while also running for 2,301 yards and 35 scores. But he also threw 30 interceptions, and it seemed that most of them came in crucial situations. Now he gets a fresh start under the watchful eye of former Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein, who begins his first full year as offensive coordinator. Much like Martinez, Klein was a dual-threat quarterback who is expected to implement an offensive system similar to the one he operated for Bill Snyder a decade ago. “He’s gotten better the last few weeks,” Klein said. “He’s gotten comfortable in what we’re asking him to do.” Martinez will have the benefit of having Vaughn lining up behind him. The 5-foot-6 dynamo is coming off a season in which he totaled 1,872 yards from scrimmage and scored 22 touchdowns.“Thepeople see him and how he handles himself every day. He’s a consummate pro,” running backs coach Brian Anderson said. “He takes care of his body. He attacks the workouts in fall camp. He sits in the meetings and takes notes. Guys see that and try to be like him, and that helps our locker room.”

The Finn ran two lower-level NASCAR races in 2011 during his one-year break from F1 but he never got a chance to enter the top Cup Series. Now retired, Raikkonen will make his Cup debut on the Watkins Glen road course driving for TrackHouse Racing and its Project91 program designed to raise NASCAR’s international exposure. The Cup Series has raced four times so far on road courses, and TrackHouse drivers Ross Chastain and Daniel Suarez have won on two of the circuits. “Kimi being in a really good car should be able to adapt very well,” Larson said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to get to race against somebody like that who has strictly just basically road raced his whole life. In Europe, it can grow. The more F1 drivers who come to NASCAR, the more worldwide interest will grow.”Butthere’s some skittishness over all the new faces. NASCAR has just two races remaining in the regular season and a playoff berth up for grabs. There have been 15 different winners so far who have claimed all but one of the 16 slots in the playoff field; Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex Jr. are in a tight fight for the final spot. Larson won last year at Sonoma, Watkins Glen and The Roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Reddick has won so far at Road America and the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. ... With 15 winners through 24 races, this season could set a record with another unique winner. Since the playoffs began in 2004, there have never been 16 or more winners through the 26-race regular season. This season is tied with the 2011 season for most different winners in a regular season. plan to be keenly aware of their surroundings. Although the newcomers Sunday are all experienced racers in their respective formulas, the Cup regulars don’t know any of them or their tendencies.“There’s just a little bit of hesitancy when you get around cars that you don’t know,” said Chris Buescher, who needs to win in the final two races to earn a playoff spot. “Part-time drivers in our sport, they usually come around enough that we know who they are and what they’re like. That makes it a little bit different when we head into a race like this, where we’ve got first-timers. But at the same time, it feels wrong to put rookie stripes on some of the names.”
By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Players from Saudi-funded LIV Golf who have filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour will be waiting nearly 16 months for the case to go to U.S.trial.District Judge Beth Labson Freeman on Thursday set the trial for Jan. 8, Depending2024.onwhether LIV attorneys proceed with a preliminary injunction — the judge said she had room on her schedule in late September or early October — that means PGA Tour players who have been suspended for signing with the rival league could go through another year of not being allowed at PGA Tour Freemanevents.last week denied a temporary restraining order sought by Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones who wanted to compete in the PGA Tour’s postseason. LIV attorneys had wanted a trial date for Aug. 7, 2023, arguing the case needed to be expedited. PGA Tour attorneys said it was not reasonable to adequately prepare and noted it coincided with the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs and make it difficult for PGA Tour Commissioner and other executives whose testimony likely would be required.Freeman set a July 23, 2023, date for summary judgment, at which point the tour is likely to ask that the case be dismissed. The lawsuit was filed two weeks ago by 11 players, although Carlos Ortiz has asked that his name be removed from the lawsuit and LIV attorneys indicated it would need discovery material from nine players, indicating another might have dropped out of the lawsuit. sets January 2024 trial for LIV suit against PGA

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Apple disclosed serious security vulner abilities for iPhones, iPads and Macs that could potentially allow attackers to take com plete control of these devices.Apple released two security reports about the issue on Wednesday, although they didn’t re ceive wide attention out side of tech publications. Apple’s explanation of the vulnerability means a hacker could get “full admin access” to the device. That would allow intruders to impersonate the de vice’s owner and sub sequently run any soft ware in their name, said Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security. Apple did not say in the reports how, where or by whom the vulnera bilities were discovered. In all cases, it cited an anonymous researcher. warns of iPhone security flaws Hax
Subscribers haveaccessuniqueto Dear Carolyn: Our daughter, 30, is good at her consulting work, intelligent and happy in a relationship. She suf fered an accident that affected her state of mind many months ago but fully recovered. We’ve noticed, howev er, on the past few visits that she has gained a lot of weight. She snacks a lot and also drinks rath er heavily, though her body tolerates the alco hol. We’re concerned, because these things can affect her health, her budget (buying larg er clothes), her relation ship, her looks and selfesteem, etc. We’re fairly sure she would prefer not to be this size, but she doesn’t address it — quite the opposite. We aren’t sure wheth er she realizes how much larger she has be come. She is very sensi tive, sometimes perceiv ing innocuous general comments as criticism. Is there a creative way to encourage her to ad dress her weight for her own well-being with out upsetting her? Or should we just keep our mouths shut? — Won dering About Weight Wondering About Weight: Leave! The weight! Alone! For frappés’ sake. She has doctors, waistbands and eyes. If the direct way sounds awful, then the “creative way” will just be awful with beads and feathers.Shehas already alert ed you to back off, too. That’s why you are able to report how sensi tive she is and how UN. INTERESTED. she is in discussing her body withBetweenyou. your lines are also signs that she is not “fully recovered.” Indications of trauma, maybe, in her self-sooth ing behaviors? You name it, so I think you know it. So how about shift ing your concern from how fat she got to the possibility of unre solved emotional inju ries? To what she might need, and want, from her parents. Compas sion, maybe? Patience, priorities, love? Please call the National Alli ance on Mental Illness’s Helpline (nami.org, 800950-6264), describe your daughter’s accident and her behaviors since, and ask about trauma — be cause what people often need from us is not what meets the eye. Dear Carolyn: Our daughter and her hus band are in their late 30s, married five years. Years ago, they told a mutual friend (who then told us) of their hope to have children. They said they considered the quality of the local schools when choosing a place to live. They are great aunts/uncles and would probably be great parents. We’ve never had a di rect conversation with her about their plans for having children. We would fully accept any response we receive: no; only if it is meant to be without medical inter vention; or yes, we’ve just not been blessed yet.The clock is ticking. We are willing to offer financial assistance for fertility treatment if that is an issue. Should we mention this — once only — and if yes, how? — Should We Ask? Should We Ask?: A theme day for the books. No, do not bring up even once the subject they have batted 1.000 at not bringing up with you, and no, do not offer even once to buy your self a grandchild. No, nooo. If you have the money and suspect they don’t have the money, then just give them the mon ey. Free and clear and to use as they wish. “Just because.”Thatway, if they are in fact seeking expen sive intervention, then your gift will ease their burden at a wrenching time with no strings or meddlesome pressure. And if they aren’t seeking treatment, then they will have a few more options in life for a sum you were ready to spare.Plus you’ll have the gratification of know ing you gave because you love them and could afford it, not because you wanted something for yourself. Happy trails. your daughter worry about her weight

SECONDARY While a bevy of transfers will help the defensive backfield, its success will largely depend on Kenny Logan Jr., an All-Big 12 safety who has NFL potential. 1Five safeties with 113 tackles last season. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The strides made by Kansas under first-year coach Lance Leipold were evident on an autumn night in Texas, when the long-suffering Jayhawks stunned the Longhorns in overtime in one of the biggest upsets in college football. They took TCU and West Virginia down to the wire in their final two games, too, giving the Jayhawks — despite winning just two games all season — the rare feeling of positive momentum heading into this season. “Year 1 was definitely a whirlwind,” admitted Leipold, the longtime small-college coach who turned around Buffalo before taking leadership of the Jayhawks. “But we feel the foundation has been set in many ways. Feel pleased on how we finished last season, the way we progressed her in the spring and some of the additions to our Simplyroster.”having a normal spring was a good start for Leipold, who was hired midway through camp when Kansas and then-coach Les Miles parted ways. The program was coming off a winless season, low on scholarship numbers and the subject of such overwhelming fan apathy that ever filling Memorial Stadium again seemed farfetched. The progress during the early part of last season was hard to see: a 49-22 drubbing by Coastal Carolina, a 59-7 loss to Iowa State and a 55-3 blowout by Oklahoma State. But once the Jayhawks settled on Jalon Daniels under center, and the defense began to learn coordinator Brian Borland’s system, things began to slowly turn around. It all culminated in Austin, when the Jayhawks finally gave their fans a reason to feel proud again. “The players understood our routine, our message was going to be consistent and we weren’t going to waver from it. And when they saw that and started to get better in what we were doing and understanding, it started to show itself late in the year,” Leipold said. “That win, obviously, and the injection of Jalon at quarterback really helped us the last fewThegames.”trick is to continue on that promisingItpath.helps that Daniels is back under center. one of their best players. He starred for five seasons at Maryland, where he helped the Terrapins to a national championship as a freshman and was honored with the sport’s version of the Heisman Trophy after his record-setting seniorHeyear.left College Park as the school’s career leader with 202 goals and 290 points. Now, he’s the longest of long shots on the gridiron, chasing a dream he laid out with his father Jim Bernhardt, who coached at the high school, college and NFL ranks before his death in 2019. Jared Bernhardt has played football before, both in high school in his native Florida and for another season after transferring last summer to Ferris State, a Division II college in Michigan. But he was an option quarterback, never a receiver. So,not only has he given up his best sport, he’s trying to make the NFL at an entirely new position.“There’s a lot of changes,” Bernhardt said after a practice this week at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “Obviously, it’s a transition. But no excuses out here. You’ve got to come out here and do yourDespitejob.” being a neophyte at receiver, Bernhardt doesn’t look entirely out of place. In Atlanta’s first preseason game, he hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Desmond Ridder with 90 seconds remaining to give the Falcons a 27-23 victory over the DetroitBernhardtLions.appeared to be relying on some of his lacrosse skills as he suddenly darted toward the middle of the end zone, muscled away from a defender and cradled the desperation throw just inside the goal Askedline.if he was channeling his lacrosse days when he hauled in that TD pass, Bernhardt replied, “A little“Everyonebit.” wants to say the agility, the change of direction, and there are things like that,” he added. “But I think football is in its own category. There’s so much you’ve got to learn, especially being a receiver, just the craft of it, the routes, processing the plays and awhiledownsrushedshipson.aguidedsport,terguyingfootballBernhardtthurFalconseverything.”coachAr-Smithlooksatmoreasaplayerchang-positionsthanaattemptingtomas-anentirelynewnotingthatheFerrisStatetonationaltitlelastsea-Inthechampion-game,Bernhardtforthreetouch-and148yards—neverattemptingpass—ina58-17rout of Valdosta State. Even with that pedigree, Smith has been impressed with how Bernhardt is soaking things up. “I’ll say it’s been pretty eye-opening to see how quickly he’s made the transition,” the coach said. “I’ll give him credit there. The other night (against the Lions), you can see his spatial awareness as he went to box a guy up to get to the top of the route. So I’m excited to keep working with him.”Bernhardt misses lacrosse. He still keeps up with the sport, including the recent competition at the World Games. His brothers are playing now. So are many of hisHefriends.smiles a bit when asked if he might return to his former sport if this NFL thing doesn’t work out — especially with lacrosse under consideration for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.“Imay leave you with a dot-dot-dot on that one,” he said coyly. “But fingers crossed (on the Olympics). The sport keeps growing. I love to watch it anytime I can. I think it has a good shot. That would be something really big for the sport.” As for the NFL, the Falcons might be Bernhardt’s best opportunity to pull off his improbable quest. The Jayhawks could have one of the best groups of running backs in the Big 12 season. That’s because Neal will be backed up by Ky Thomas, who ran for more than 800 yards last season at Minnesota, and Sevion Morrison, who showed plenty of promise while getting relatively few opportunities last season at Nebraska. OH, BUT THE DEFENSE The Jayhawks allowed 42.17 points per game last season, behind only UMass at the bottom of Division I football. The Jayhawks also topped Arkansas State to keep from being last in rush defense, were 81st in pass defense and tied for 50th in turnover margin. HELP ON THE WAY The Jayhawks could have as many as seven transfers start on defense. They include pass rusher Lonnie Phelps (Miami-Ohio), Craig Young (Ohio State) and Lorenzo McCaskill (Louisiana) at linebacker, Kalon Gervin (Michigan State) and Monte’ McGary (Utah State) at cornerback and Marvin Grant (Purdue) and Jarrett Paul (Eastern Michigan) at safety.

(AP) — The Tennessee Titans must decide if rookie Malik Willis gets a second straight preseason start knowing exactly what they have in veteran Ryan Tannehill. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have Tom Brady, who is due back soon from a personal break from training camp, though coach Todd Bowles said Thursday he has no specific date for the quarterback’s return.“We’ll see,” Bowles said. “We’ll talk about it next week. I’m not concerned about it right now. We’re trying to practice against Tennessee and play a game. I said sometime after Tennessee. There’s no definitive date for me. But we’ll check on it. We’ll keep in touch and we’ll find out.” Brady hasn’t practiced with the Bucs since being excused Aug. 11 for what Bowles called a planned absence from the team to address “personal things.” Bowles said then that the 45-year-old quarterback’s break from practice was arranged before camp opened and that he wouldn’t return until after the exhibition against Tennessee (0-1).Brady didn’t play in the Bucs’ preseason opener, a loss to Miami. Veteran Blaine Gabbert started, with Kyle Trask, their second-round draft pick in 2020, getting much of theGabbertwork. had a pass batted down by Titans defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons on Thursday before being picked off by Titans cornerback Caleb Farley in a 2-minute drill to end practice. Bowles said the extra work with Brady out has been great for Gabbert“Thementally.plays might not be there all the time, but the mental reps and what he’s getting and making the right play is very important, not just making a wild play and making the right play,” Bowles said. “So it’s been great to have him there.”Tannehill also didn’t play when the Titans opened the preseason by losing in Baltimore. Willis, the 86th pick overall out of Liberty in the April draft, got the start ahead of Logan Woodside, who has been Tannehill’s backup the past two seasons. Coach Mike Vrabel hasn’t made a decision on who starts next but made it clear the Titans want to see as much as possible out of Willis. It’s why Willis has been getting more work with the second-team offense in 2-minute drills at Woodside’s expense, which continued Thursday. Willis has turned the fight for the backup job into a real competition.“We have to continue to develop Malik in this system, and we’ve had conversations with Logan about his opportunity to compete,” Vrabel said. “But I also feel like we have to try to see how quickly we can bring Malik along. And I think that would be the reasonBradywhy.”won’t be the only one not playing for the Bucs on Saturday night. Bowles said wide receiver Julio Jones, who practiced both Wednesday and Thursday, against his old team won’t play. Wide receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Russell Gage didn’t practice at all in Nashville as they recover from injured hamstrings. NOTES: Practice ended with a fight as Bucs running back Leonard Fournette came over to punch Simmons, who responded. Vrabel got in the middle to help break it up. Bowles said it was unfortunate the last play turned into a skirmish after good work against the past two days.
Questions remain about when exactly quarterback Tom Brady might be back with the Tampa Bay Bucs in training camp.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The franchise quarterback who brought baggage and Super Bowl dreams to Cleveland won’t play for two months. It’s always something with the Browns, who have a well-chronicled history of missteps.Deshaun Watson’s acceptance of an 11-game suspension and $5 million fine in a settlement with the NFL over alleged sexual misconduct has left the Browns wondering what will become of a season they believed could be special.Watson won’t be back until December, at the earliest, and only then if the threetime Pro Bowler satisfies the league’s requirements that he undergo an evaluation by behavioral experts and follows their treatment program. The Browns knew there was a strong possibility they’d be without Watson for an extended period. They signed him for five years despite the lawsuits brought by two dozen women in Texas. And now that they know exactly the time frame for his absence, the question becomes can they survive until Watson is eligible to return on Dec. 4 — against, of all teams, the Texans. “We still have 17 games to play,” Browns general manager Andrew Berry said Thursday, shortly after Watson’s punishment became public. “We think we have a number of talented players and coaches who are in that locker room. Our expectation is still to have a competitive team and go and try to win every game.”Jacoby Brissett is Cleveland’s new starting quarterback, and the 29-year-old has a track record of being a capable replacement. He’s done it with New England, Indianapolis and Miami while posting a 14-23 record as a starter.Notnearly as flashy or dynamic as Watson, he’s more of a game manager. His experience is a huge plus — on and off the field. Brissett is a leader, and by all accounts well-liked and respected by his teammates and coaches. “A pro’s pro, somebody who is going to lead from out in front, works very hard at his craft and just is an outstanding teammate,” coach Kevin Stefanski said, essentially repeating comments he’s made about Brissett throughout trainingStefanskicamp. believes the Browns, who have had a league-high 32 starting quarterbacks since 1999, can still accomplish their goals with Brissett.“The guys have trust in each other, and I know they have trust in Jacoby,” he said. “Ultimately, this is the best team game there is.” Brissett began getting the majority of the snaps with Cleveland’s first-team offense earlier this week as the Browns enacted their plan with Watson’s suspension imminent.Brissett threw mostly short passes during the Browns’ practice against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, and he’ll get more work against them Friday before sitting out Sunday’s exhibition game between the teams.
1: Once drivers take the green flag, they are faced with a downhill trek into the rst corner. Carrying a ton of speed down the straightaway, this is a heavy braking zone in order to get the car slowed down enough to make the right-hand turn. This is one of the best opportunities to make a pass and it can get chaotic quickly, especially on restarts.

5: Also referred to as the carousel, drivers approach this long, sweeping right-hander. With a banking of 10 degrees, the steepest turn of the road course, it allows drivers to build up speed as they make their way onto the straightaway leading into Turn 6.
Watson’s suspension delays Cleveland’s big gamble
7: A short chute gives drivers time to adjust to make a good angle through the nal corner. Another chance to make a quality pass as the right-hand bend trickles drivers onto the frontstretch and down to the startnish line.
4: Drivers complete the uphill climb and the corner starts to level off, building up speed as they enter backstretch of the road course.
Last Sunday at Michigan, Kevin Harvick broke a 65-race drought.Nowthe driver of the No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford has a tworace winning streak. Chased by runner-up Christopher Bell and third-place finisher Chris Buescher over the closing laps, Harvick threaded his way through traffic to win Sunday‘s Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond Raceway by 0.441 seconds. The Cup Series victory was Harvick‘s fourth at the 0.75-mile short track — his first there since 2013 — and the 60th of his career, tying him with Kyle Busch for most among active drivers and ninth all-time.Harvick led twice for 55 laps, passing eventual sixth-place finisher Joey Logano for the lead on Lap 334 and regaining it from Denny Hamlin on Lap 353 at the end of a cycle of green-flag pit stops. By pitting one circuit earlier than Logano on Lap 340, Buescher leapfrogged the Team Penske driver and began to chase Harvick, who led the final 48 laps. Buescher got to Harvick‘s bumper in traffic but couldn‘t make a run for the Thelead.driver of the No. 17 Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing Ford lost his chance for a serendipitous victory when Harvick lapped Bubba Wallace and Buescher stayed trapped behind Wallace‘s No. 23 Toyota and fell two seconds behind. “Just burned the rear tires up,” said Buescher, who needs a victory to qualify for the Cup Playoffs. “Ultimately that’s on me. Lapped traffic didn’t do us any favors, either, but ultimately just got to keep the rears under us a little bit better so we can have a little bit better shot there to get after him for the win.” On 12-lap fresher tires, Bell charged forward, slipped past Buescher on Lap 396 of 400 and closed on Harvick before running out of time. “Well, I knew he was coming, but I forgot to shift down the front straightaway the last time,” Harvick said. “I was not paying attention, and he got closer than he should have. I made a mistake there a couple laps doing the same thing. I wasn’t shifting on the back, and I was shifting on the front. There was a lot going on, and made a couple mistakes, let him get too close.” Bell, who already has a victory to his credit this season, seemed pleased with the runner-up result. “Really, really proud of (crew chief) Adam Stevens, this entire 20 group,” Bell said. “The Rheem Camry didn’t feel very good at the beginning, and we had our fair share of troubles (including a spin on Lap 250), and the pit crew really came through at the end there with some blazing stops and allowed us to get in front of the 11 (Hamlin), who was on the same strategy as us and get up there and contend.” In the battle for the last position in the Playoffs, Ryan Blaney widened his advantage over Martin Truex Jr. despite finishing 10th to Truex‘s seventh. The difference was in stage points. Blaney scored 11 to none for Truex and now leads the 2017 series champion by 26 with two races left in the regular season. Hamlin came home fourth, followed by Chase Elliott. Logano led a race-high 222 laps, but his No. 22 Ford wasn‘t as strong in the twilight as it had been earlier in the race. “Yeah, I think just as the sun went down and the track cooled off, (we) lost some turn on our car,” Logano said. “Kevin and some others got a lot better the last couple of runs in the race. When it was hot and slick, that was probably our strength with the Shell Pennzoil Mustang.”

5: Backstretch allows the drivers to gain a ton of momentum, which leads them into another heavy braking zone and into the bus stop, or the inner loop section of the course. Hot on the brakes upon entry, this is a great place to overtake someone before making a quick series of right- and left-hand turns. Lots of slipping and sliding.
