Family celebrates first Father’s Day AP Poll:
220 prison escapees on loose in US
By KAYLA BANZET The Iola Register
Dakota and Lauren Hufferd sit on wicker furniture on their porch after a day’s work as 8-month-old baby Knox squirms on his mother’s lap. There is no sweeter sound for Dakota than his son’s laugh. “I could listen to it all day,” he said. This Sunday, Dakota will celebrate his first Father’s Day with Knox and his wife Lauren. Dakota, 27, and Lauren, 26, both grew up in Iola and attended high school together. They began dating in 2006 and were married on Aug. 21, 2010. Dakota works for the City of Iola in the gas department and Lauren began working at Class Act Salon in 2009 and later purchased the business in 2012. The couple, who has been together now for nine years, finishes each other’s sentences when retelling the day they found out they were going to be parents. “Well, you were messing with the fire place,” Lauren said. “And I came out of the

Lauren said with a laugh. “Oh, and he got called into work after we found out.” See HUFFERDS | Page A4
NEW YORK (AP) — Somewhere out there are an admitted killer who crawled through a Texas prison’s ventilation ducts, a murderer who apparently escaped from an Indiana institution in a garbage truck, and a Florida convict who got other inmates to put him in a crate at the prison furniture shop and had himself delivered to freedom by truck. They’re among more than 220 state prison escapees nationwide who are listed as on the loose, The Associated Press found in a coast-tocoast survey. Most broke out decades ago, meaning the chances of finding them have dwindled See PRISON | Page A4
City Council eyes changing streets to one-way routes By RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register
Iola City Council members will discuss Monday a proposal to make a pair of streets near Iola Middle School oneway thoroughfares. Adding fifth-grade classes to the middle school as part of USD 257’s shift to grade-level attendance centers will add approximately 100 students and eight to 10 instructors to the middle school this fall. That, in turn, almost certainly will increase traffic congestion around the school.
In a prepared report for the Council, City Administrator Carl Slaugh describes the scene around IMS as “a traffic nightmare.” He has an accompanying traffic study, which looked at congestion surrounding the school at various parts of the day, as proof. The Council will consider two options. The first would change East Street to a one-way westbound lane from First Street to Cottonwood, four blocks See STREETS | Page A6

Quote of the day Vol. 117, No. 159
Debbie Bearden has seen the light. But it almost signaled the end. What started as a simple knee replacement surgery turned into an eight-monthlong medical rollercoaster for Bearden. On Sept. 30, 2014, Bearden underwent knee replacement surgery on her right knee at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Both her knees had been bothering her for years and she was ready to rid herself of the daily pain. With the surgery and her recovery deemed successful, Bearden was released in a few days. A few days later, however, she was awakened by excruciating pain. “At 2 a.m. Tuesday I felt like See BEARDEN | Page A6
