Scouting’s benefits shared with Rotary By BOB JOHNSON The Iola Register

Making a positive impact on boys is a privilege to experience, Jared Sigler told Iola Rotarians Thursday, following a video presentation showing local Boy Scouts having a “high adventure” in Colorado. Sigler recalled that Troop 55 had its beginnings here 101 years ago and while some years membership had been sparse, the troop persevered and today has 24 members. Sigler’s wife, Stacie, assists in adult leadership. Boy Scouts is an organization with a central

role of developing leadership. Volunteers are welcome, as is community support. He complimented Iola Rotary for its support of the Colorado trip that provided four Scouts “the adventure of a lifetime.” Sigler wasn’t a Scout himself, but as a youth enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family, and carried the activities into married life. His son learned of Scouting at school, which led the Siglers to use his night at Scout meeting as a date night for themselves. When their older son, who deals with Asperger syndrome, be-

Computer crash shutters Sonic A computer crash prompted Sonic DriveIn to close Thursday afternoon. The restaurant was shuttered until Friday afternoon. The computer system controls everything from the communications systems at each parking stall to the orders each carhop receives electronically, explained assistant manager Tammy Lewis. Crews tried operating by hand — the carhops took orders

directly from customers, then relayed information to the cooks — but as the restaurant got busier Thursday morning, it became evident the employees would struggle to keep up. That led to the shutdown, general manager Jeremy Colborn said. “We certainly apologize to everyone who was inconvenienced,” Colborn said. “We didn’t want to see our level of service drop.”

Former Iolan now a nurse practitioner CHANUTE — Nurse practitioner Kathi Yokum, ARPN-C, an Iola H i g h S ch o o l graduate, has joined t h e staff of Ashley Clinic, Kathi Yokum teaming with Dr. Robert Thomen’s family practice. After graduating from Iola High and Allen Community College, Yokum earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Pittsburg State University in 1998. She completed her master of science in nursing earlier this year. She has been involved in healthcare in Neosho County for 18 years with Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center. “I always knew I wanted to be a nurse practitioner,” Yokum said. “People encouraged me to continue with my education right after earning my bachelor’s degree, but

I chose my family and to raise my kids first.” She and husband Jason have four children, ages 12 to 19, and live in Humboldt. Jason is employed at Gates Corporation, Iola.

came interested “we got involved,” Sigler said, which has led to “a lot of fun” for all of the family. Sigler lauded Iolan Andy Dunlap, on hand for the presentation, for his lifetime dedication to Scouting and his steadying influence for Troop 55 through the years. With a little urging, Dunlap allowed he had been involved in Boy Scouts for over 50 years. STAN GRIGSBY, filling in for President Bob Hawk, announced the club had received a $1,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation. The money will be used to purchase clothing for the club’s Rotary Closet project. Clothing, including underwear and socks,

will be purchased and made available to needy children at Iola-area schools. Idea for the project came from a program about a closet project in Chanute. Rotarians also are on the cusp of shipping books to South Africa for school-age children, outcome of another Rotary program.
