Lending Libraries

Drugs, gun located By RICHARD LUKEN and JON DYKSTRA The Iola Register
Free book stations set up in Allen County Last week, Tracy Keagle began installing the first of many miniature lending libraries, which will be placed at various points around the county. Inspired by similar lending libraries she encountered in Chicago, Keagle figured that, in an increasingly commercial world, the citizens of Allen County might also appreciate the gift of free books. The boxes were constructed by Keagle’s husband and decorated — each one with a unique design — by
local amateur artists. Shaped like oversized mailboxes or birdhouses, each mini library holds more than two dozen books and is intended for both children and adults. The little libraries operate on the honor system: take a book for free, leave a book behind if you’ve got one to spare. Three lending libraries have already been installed: In Moran, at Troxel Park, and, in Iola, at 209 Dodge Dr. and on the west side of North State Street, where it inter-
sects with the Mo-Pac Trail. Operating on the same principle as the “Little Lending Library,” Keagle recently received permission from the county to install a “Blessings Box” on the courthouse lawn. Instead of books, charitable residents are encouraged to leave items — toilet paper, soap, feminine hygiene products, canned goods or other non-perishable foods — which residents in need are invited to take according to their need.
A search for illegal drugs earlier this week took longer than law enforcement officials expected, Iola Police Chief Jared Warner said. T h e search, as reported in Thursday’s Ishine R e g i s t e r, McFarlane began Monday at Humboldt High School, followed by searches at Iola’s high school and middle school. Searches of 14 cars at HHS yielded discovery of a small amount of what is suspected as marijuana in one of the vehicles. No illegal drugs were found at either Iola campus. As officers were wrapping up their searches, they received a call from Allen Community College employees referring to drugs and a pistol found in a room search. After officers obtained a search warrant, they found a pistol and what they described as illegal drugs. The pistol had been reported as stolen in Fayetteville, Ark. In a search of vehicles associated with the room, one vehicle was found to have additional drugs and other drug-related items. Reading program considered By BOB JOHNSON The Iola Register
Rotarians were given a pitch on Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Thursday. Pam Hunsaker said the program provides one book a month to pre-school children, from the month after they are born to their fifth birthday. Purpose is to give kids a leg up in reading in preparation for kindergarten. Since 1986 children in 16,000 affiliates in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and Belize have received 85 million books, including 10.5 million in 2015, said Hudson, from Columbia, Mo., and northSee ROTARY | Page A4
Prairie Rose 4-H celebrates origins By RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register
MORAN — As area residents prepare today to celebrate the 70th Moran Day festival, a gathering of 4-H’ers will help celebrate their club’s 70th year of existence as well. The Prairie Rose 4-H Club, organized in 1946, will feature a special float in today’s 11 a.m. parade, with current and past members on board. Brenda Armstrong and Kim Schomaker, co-leaders, are uncertain how many will participate. “Hopefully, we can get the current 4-H members who can ride, but aren’t in volleyball, aren’t in band and aren’t at the State Fair,” Armstrong joked.
