Storrer graduates twice on same day By RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register

Several high school and college graduates donned caps and gowns and walked across the stage as part of the pomp and circumstance on Saturday. Brooklyn Storrer did it twice. Barely four hours before she lined up with her fellow Iola High School seniors for Saturday’s commencement ceremony, Storrer was among Allen Community College’s Class of 2017. She earned her associate in arts degree Saturday morning at the Allen commencement, ran home long enough to grab some lunch, and then returned to the high school for that ceremony. Storrer, daughter of Robert and Gina Storrer, earned the doubleheader by enrolling in dual credit classes while at IHS. “After a while, I figured I might as well and go all the way and do this (college) course in two years,” she said shortly before the ACC ceremony. With her high school diploma in her left hand and her associate degree in her right, Storrer will head to Lawrence in the fall to enroll at the University of Kansas.

Humboldt seniors reflect on succeses By BOB JOHNSON The Iola Register

HUMBOLDT — Makalah McCall glanced into the crowd, spotted her parents, flashed a smile and clinched her fist in a victory sign on Saturday afternoon. She had good reason, having just won the Warren and Shirley Breiner Scholarship, a $10,000 grant that will help the Humboldt High grad in her quest to be a nurse practitioner. The scholarship was McCall’s

third announced at commencement exercises. She also won the Humboldt Lions Club and Nina McGee Fellers scholarships. She will attend Neosho County Community College this fall to play basketball and study nursing, then continue her education at Pittsburg State. McCall also plans to join the Navy as a nurse. Rayce Hoepker, who will play basketball at Allen Community College, Annalise Whitcomb, who will attend Fort Scott Commu-

nity College on a volleyball scholarship, and Kira McReynolds, who is bound for Kansas State University to pursue a veterinary career, were co-valedictorians of the class of 2017, each with 4.0 grade point averages. Hoepker was recognized by the Lions Club for being the top-ranked boy; Whitcomb and McReynolds by the G.A.L.S.-F.C.E. for tying as the top girl. McReynolds also won the Monarch AcaSee HUMBOLDT | Page A4
