HUMBOLDT — It’s still just week two — not even a quarter into the 2022 foot ball season — but Humboldt High’s Cubs delivered quite a statement Friday.

Humboldt High’s Sam Hull (17) picks off a pitch attempt by Caney Valley and races 29 yards for a touchdown in Friday’s 24-0 Cub victory.

Mustang Reese Curry led in serving with five aces while Elza Clift went 10-for10 on serves with three aces. Aysha Houk totaled four

Caney Valley quarterback Garrett Watson, under du ress from a ferocious Hum boldt pass rush, attempted in vain to pitch the ball out side to a Bulllpup running back. Instead, Hull deflect ed the pitch to himself, and raced untouched 29 yards for a touchdown. Sommer’s 2-point run put Humboldt ahead 8-0.

Money found the end zone again on the next drive as he rushed in from three yards out for the 27-7 lead at half time.On Wellsville’s first drive of the second half, Dezmond Winton took a rush for 59 yards to the house for a 34-7 lead.“Defensively, our goal was to try and attack the inside and make sure we kept Dors ey in the pocket. We kept him in the pocket but they still ran all over us. We just didn’t execute tackles and didn’t get downhill enough,” Daugharthy said.

Winton’s run was fol lowed by a Dorsey 55-yard touchdown rush in which he dipped and dodged Mustang defenders to scamper into the end zone for the 41-7 lead.

The Cubs then forced a quick three-and-out to re gain possession, but their next drive stalled at midfield to give the ball back to Caney Valley.Watson’s short passes moved the ball to Humboldt’s side of the field, but again the Cub defense answered the charge. The next key came in the third quarter, after Humboldt misfired on a golden scoring opportunity. Sommer’s 40yard jaunt put the ball inside the Bullpup 5. Another carry moved the ball to the 1, but the next run lost two yards, and a holding penalty moved the ball back to the 15, where Ellis’s fourth-down pass fell incomplete.“Itdrives you nuts being there that close,” Wyrick said. “But I was glad to see we didn’t hang our heads. More importantly, a game like this will pay off for both teams in the long run, Humboldt head coach Logan Wyrick said, because of both teams’ propensity for play ing tough, physical football.

The student put on quite a show for his mentor: The 2018 MVP threw three touchdown passes on Kansas City’s first three drives.

“You can either start sulking about it or look in the mirror for what it is,” Murray said. “It’s a long season. We got punched in the mouth. How do you respond?”

It was a rough start for Arizona, which also suffered through a brutal ending to 2021. The Cardinals have lost six of seven games dating to last season, including the“Theyplayoffs.beat us in every way,” Kingsbury said. “There is no denying it, no hiding from it. We didn’t execute in any phase and they played at a high level.”

Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns, Clyde Edwards-Helaire caught two touchdown passes and the Chiefs rolled to an impressive 44-21 road win over the Arizona Cardinals in the opener for both teams.

NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz beat Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 6-3 on Sunday in the U.S. Open final to collect his first Grand Slam title at age 19 and become the youngest man to lead the ATP rankings. A pivotal moment came when Alcaraz faced two set points while serving down 6-5 in the third. But Alcaraz erased each of those pointfrom-the-set opportunities for Ruud with the sort of quick-reflex, soft-hand volleys he repeatedly displayed. Alcaraz then was much better in the tiebreaker and got the one break he needed in the fourth set.

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was playing his first game since being rewarded with a $230.5 million, five-year contract during the offseason. He finished 22-of-34 passing for 193 yards and two touchdowns, though much of that production came when the Chiefs already had control of the game.

Dear Carolyn: So my 16-year-old son opted to smoke a joint at home this week late at night. I smelled it (because, duh) and confronted him and we took away his driv ing privileges for two weeks and also limited his screen time. It’s been a week from hell and our son is upset and so are we.I knew raising teenag ers would not be super easy but I had no idea it would be this lonely. I have a couple friends I knew would commiser ate and offer support, but mostly we have kept this to ourselves. It feels like all we hear about from parent friends is the highlight reel and ACT scores, and sport achievements and cute girlfriends and maybe, “Oh he overslept for 10 minutes and it was total chaos.” It feels danger ous to walk up to them at the soccer field and say, “So we busted our kiddo smoking pot this week and we are freaked out and worried and, oh, how are you?” How do parents manage through this? — Lonely
