Obituary Shirley Froelich

She was a member of the VFW. She was a member of Mother of God Catholic Church, Oswego.

She was married to Paul Froelich on April 26, 1974.

He preceded her in death.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Dennis Burgess and one daughter Jennifer Holtz.

Surviving is one daughter, Vallerie Jane Hayden, Oswego; two sisters, Joan Willis, Iola, and Malala J. Koester, Yates Center; two grandchildren, Harold Hayen, Vinita, Okla., and Lorie Kay Hayden, Oswego, and four great-grandchildren.

Shirley Sue (Burgess) Froelich, 76, passed away at 3:10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at Deseret Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Oswego following an illness.

Shirley was born Sept.

2, 1936 in Iola. Her parents were Eugene and Clara (Wilson) Burgess. Shirley graduated from Iola High School with the class of 1954.

She worked at Rexall Drug in Iola for several years before moving to Oswego in 1969. She used to work at Groomers Ben Franklin and then later at Don Froe Liquor Store.

She last worked at Labette

Police reports Gates factory receives bomb threat

On Nov. 10, Iola police officers responded to a bomb threat made at Gates Manufacturing. The factory was evacuated and officers called in the Kansas State Highway Patrol bomb squad to the scene. No evidence of explosives were found on the scene, an investigation is ongoing.

Bicycle found

Iola police officers recovered a purple girls’ Roadmaster mountain bike. The bicycle may be claimed at the Iola Police Department.

Theft attempted

Denise Butler, Iola, reported to police officers on Nov. 8 that her vehicle had been illegally entered on the 300 block of North Washington Avenue. Suspects were reported to have damaged the CD player, but failed to remove the device from the car’s console.

Alcohol stolen

Two white males were reported to have stolen a sixpack of Smirnoff Ice malt beverage from Walmart on the evening of Nov. 12. The theft was recorded on video and officers are investigating.

Cell phone stolen

Woman cited for driving with suspended license

Police responded to a report that Kathleen Sinclair’s cell phone, valued at $300, had been stolen from her residence on the 500 block of North Jefferson Avenue. A suspect has been named and an investigation is ongoing.

Amanda Pollock, Iola, was cited for driving with a suspended license by Iola police officers on Nov. 12.

Driver arrested

Kim Duft, 54, rural Iola, was arrested Sunday evening for driving while under the influence of alcohol after officers investigated finding his vehicle in a ditch west of Iola. Officers also requested charges against Duft of driving while his driver’s license was suspended and refusing to submit to an alcohol test.

Pumpkin used as projectile

Mason Kellet, Iola, reported that a pumpkin had been thrown at his vehicle on the 1100 block of North Buckeye Street.

Bicycle stolen

Kelley Tindel reported to police officers that his blue Next Power 12-speed bicycle had been stolen from his residence at 19 E. Madison Ave.

Parked car hit

A vehicle driven by Dedra Westervelt, Iola, backed into a car owned by Cindy King, Chanute, on a private driveway in Bassett Saturday morning.

Scooter found

Iola police officers have recovered a scooter, found on the 800 block of South Washington. The scooter may be claimed by the owner at the Iola Police Department.

Vehicles crash

The driver of a vehicle that hit one driven by Richard Curl, Iola, at the intersection of Massachusetts Street and 1400 Road Saturday afternoon has yet to be identified. Officers said the driver didn’t stop after the accident.

Wildlife peruse Iowa store CORALVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Shoppers in Iowa got an unusual glimpse of wildlife Monday morning when a doe and two fawns wandered into a department store.

Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford says the deer used doors that open automatically to get into a Kohl’s store.

He says the fawns stayed

in the store’s vestibule, but their mother made it into the store and headed toward the back.

Police say employees opened up some back doors and the doe exited.

The two fawns turned around and used the automatic exit doors to leave the store.

No injuries or damage was reported.

LARRY TUCKER, city administrator, said a conversation on housing two weeks ago was lightly attended, but “we got a lot of comments.”

A goal, he said, is to create opportunities for development of private housing. A survey of 190 people who work in Humboldt but live elsewhere found 67 families would be willing to move to town if affordable housing were available.

He said the storm and fire alert siren in Cannon Park had been moved from its original 50-foot pole to one 70 feet tall and was better heard throughout the city. It and one in the south part of town are tested at noon on Mondays and Fridays.

Downtown Christmas lights will be turned on at 6 p.m. Monday at the bandstand. Mayor Nobby Davis will do the honors, with music and refreshments a part of the ceremony.

COUNCIL members agreed to purchase one of three fire hydrants that will be situated on property owned by USD 258 at the east edge of town, the site of a new sports complex.

The city will pay $1,735 for a hydrant to be installed along Georgia Road at the north edge of the property and near an access road. Two other hydrants, the responsibility of the school district, will be near a parking lot and among structures of the complex.

Kent Barfoot, chief of Humboldt volunteer fire department, said putting the hydrants about 1,500 feet apart and having three of them would satisfy state fire codes.

Humboldt Trowbridge relishes role with community dinner

HUMBOLDT— Ida Trowbridge has been busy organizing and planning the community Thanksgiving dinner at United Methodist Church.

The Methodist Church hosted the first community dinner more than 10 years ago and has been a part of a rotation schedule with local churches since then. This is Trowbridge’s second time chairing the dinner committee.

Members of the community took action years ago when they realized some residents were not going to have family to share the day and meal with. The first dinner was at the Senior Center with food provided by local churches.

All the churches that are able are involved, Trowbridge said. The menu is planned with the host church providing at least 40 pounds of turkey, three pans of dressing, three crock pots of gravy, plus drinks and dinner-

“The dinner helps people who don’t have anywhere to go or those who can’t afford to buy and make dinner,” Trowbridge said.

As chairperson, Trowbridge has five others on the committee, but many church members take part serving, providing rides to the church and delivering a meal to shutins.

“The young people did all the decorations,” she pointed out. “We like to get them involved.”

Trowbridge and her husband, Donald, moved to Humboldt 12 years ago from Colorado and immediately became active in the local church. They volunteer in numerous areas, including the Ministerial Alliance community food pantry. She also is UMW president.

Wonder Bread store to close doors

HUMBOLDT — The Wonder Bread Bakery Thriftshop, 919 N. 8th St., liquidated supplies at half price Saturday after Hostess Brands, Inc. announced the store would be closing just days earlier.

“It has been crazy,” said Cindy Michael, store manager.

The parking was congested and space inside crowded throughout the day as shoppers cleared the shelves of bread, cakes and numerous other food items.

Some shoppers made return trips.

The store was open Monday to offer what inventory remained, but closed at noon regardless, Michael said. “If we have anything left, we’re supposed to call the food pantries.”

Closure of the distribution center affects seven employees locally, four drivers and three store personnel. Hostess Brands does not own the building that sits on the north edge of town.

‘Market’ replaces ‘show’

The first Saturday in December GALS FCE and the Humboldt Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Humboldt Holiday Gift Market, a gathering of craftsmen and entrepreneurs selling their wares.

Formerly known as Santa’s Arts and Crafts Show, the name was revamped this year to reflect the diversity of items to be had.

“We found there are fewer people doing a lot of crafts anymore,” said Linda Leonard, one of the Market organizers.

“There will be more than handmade crafts and we changed the name to represent that.”

Loren Korte is making arrangements with area radio stations to air spot ads promoting local businesses during the holiday season. The ads will be available to Chamber members free of charge.

Election rhetoric blinds us to our own true values A worthless poll taken by the Pew Research Center seems to say that a great many Americans oppose capitalism and favor socialism. The questions were phrased this way: “do you have a positive or negative view of capitalism . . . of socialism.

The results don’t mean much because neither of those terms were defined.

Thanks to political rhetoric in a bitterly fought campaign, a good many people equate capitalism with the fraud committed by some financial institutions which created the debt crisis that caused the great recession. It is not surprising that a good many Americans have a negative view toward that particular set of crimes committed by a small number of capitalists.

On the other end of the political spectrum, government assistance to anyone for any reason was labeled socialistic.

Thus, Pell grants to poor students, Social Security checks to seniors, Medicare, veterans pensions and a long, long list of other benefits that the people provide themselves through government become “socialistic.”

Socialism has a definition. It is a system under which government owns the means of production and distribution.

The government owns everything and determines who gets what. Russia had a socialist system. So did China and Cuba. Cuba may be the only socialist society left — and it is creeping slowly toward a mixed system in which government still makes most of the decisions but private businesses are allowed to develop and grow. Russia and China left socialism behind years ago because it doesn’t work.

The U.S. has a capitalist economy. It is also a democracy.

In a democracy, the people have the power to change the society in which they live. A democratic government can determine how its economy is structured.

In America, for a couple of examples, the people have de-

cided to provide a free education to youngsters from kindergarten through high school.

The people have also decided that private schools can exist, charge tuition and make a profit on their operations. Taxsupported public schools are not socialistic. Private schools are capitalistic.

If the people in their wisdom decide that higher education should also be 100 percent tax-supported because the new world of work requires a higher level of knowledge and training that would not be socialistic either.

For similar reasons, Americans have decided to build highways in their states and to create a national highway system. It is not accurate or useful to label these government decisions “socialistic” even though the highways are open to public use without charge.

Because the human creature has selfishness built in, the powerful will exploit those without power unless they are reined in by law. Capitalism is the most efficient way to generate wealth that people have yet discovered. But wealth is power. The wealthy will use their power to generate still more wealth and will dominate unless society steps in and regulates their activities with the goal of preventing the development of a moneybased royalty that lords it over the rest of the people. Readers of history know that just such a royalty developed in Europe, resulting in bloody revolutions and mass migrations by the serfs to the New World — which became the United States of America.

Using the power of the people through government to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor and to give most people a fair shot at a good life is not socialism. It can be a capitalistic democracy that works for the great majority of its citizens.

That’s what we have built.

We should try very hard to keep it.

Why ‘The Boss’ still reigns As the third hour of Bruce Springsteen’s set came to a close, my girlfriend, Shay, and I exchanged exasperated looks.

It seemed hard to believe that I could be more tired than the 63-year-old man who just spent an hour wailing, crowd-surfing and “shredding on his guitar.”

We had come for the songs.

When I read that he was going to be playing the Sprint Arena in Kansas City, I knew I had to hear “Dancing in the Dark,” “Born to Run,” and “I’m On Fire” for myself. Though I’m not a hardcore fan of The Boss (I didn’t don a sleeveless jean shirt and red bandana, which I now fully regret), I find it hard not to relate to some of his down-to-earth material.

We enjoyed sitting in the “nose bleed” section of the arena, singing along to our favorite songs with the inevitable drunken neighbor.

For me, I took something else from the energy Springsteen displayed on stage, something I didn’t expect. After all of the election coverage, international turmoil and dance crazes of our day, I seemed to have become jaded on what it means to be an American.

As Shay and I walked into the stadium, picketers marched across the street protesting gay mar-

riage, homeless men and women begged for change, and the skyscrapers rose above us, blanketing what I saw as a big, complicated world. When we took our seats and the lights came on, things seemed less complicated.

Out walks this aging rock star who has built his career around the magic of being a common man. He darted across the stage, high-fiving complete strangers and relishing the connection he shares with the almost 20,000 people that had crowded the auditorium. The people knew his songs, and for good reason. His band, which crowded the stage, fed off of his energy as well. I couldn’t help but sit and reflect on what drives a man like Bruce Springsteen. Sure, some people may say it is the money and the fame. But the romantic in me likes to think that he actually believes what he sings about. As his song, “Dancing in the Dark” says, “they say

you gotta stay hungry, and baby I’m just about starving tonight.”

I’d say Bruce is still hungry.

The show was filled with his inspirational and stirring one-liners, not to mention some somber moments reflecting on the death of Springsteen’s best friend and probably the most famous saxophone player in our current age, Clarence Clemons.

Both Shay and I commented that the show felt more like an experience than a concert, at least to us.

THE LIGHTS came on after his exhaustingly long set and people began to file out of the stadium, electrified by his performance.

The streets had calmed down as we walked back to our parking space.

I’ve had time to reflect on the concert, and this one was different than the numerous others I had been to. It was inspirational to see Bruce Springsteen exploding with enthusiasm after so many years. We are human, but he didn’t seem to be. It’s important to have those American superheroes that can represent the strength that our America does not always have. If anything, we can always trust in Springsteen, still strong at 63 years old.

Ongoing fight against debt: US and personal Very few of us have been exposed to very much about how to handle our personal finances, or, if we were, we were not paying attention. As a result, even the most modest of earners have been captured and made economic serfs by an all-powerful, politically favored financial sector that usually has staked strong claims on our youth and their futures by the time they are 25.

Their methods are not secret.

First, they capture most young people with student loans, which today exceed $1 trillion, more than current credit card debt.

Simultaneously, they flood them with pre-approved credit cards, which exceeded $350,000 per family during the first decade of this century. All of this was made possible by a 1978 Supreme Court decision that in essence deregulated interest rates, making rates of 30 percent per annum common.

Today, even if you are doing everything right, the financial institutions want a piece of you and are likely to get it, as illustrated by the recent experience of a grandson. He has a good job, and maybe an even better girlfriend, which has added up to him looking at houses for sale. As he entered the process, he thought it a good idea to get a pre-approved mortgage.

But, guess what? He was not approved. Why? Because he has had only one line of credit, a credit

card that he has always paid promptly. He was told to get three more credit cards, use them a few times, keep them for a year, and re-apply. This is today’s gatekeeper charge to obtain a mortgage a year from now.

Banks may call it good business. Others would call it blackmail, or simply avoiding granting low-interest mortgages when the student loan and credit card rackets, among others, can yield a much higher return. Of course, these are the same folks who used sub-prime mortgages and the securitization of said junk mortgages to bring on the greatest financial crises in our nation’s modern history. And, leave innocent parties and taxpayers holding the bag.

I have fought the good battle with our 16 children and grandchildren to never have an unpaid balance on any credit card. If necessary, come to me. I’ve won some, but I suspect the ubiquitous banks have won more.

Obama held his first post-election press conference. And folks were left wondering if he would and could demand, and get, a marginal income tax rate greater than today’s 35 percent. And, what any income tax rate increase would do to today’s slow economic recovery.

In many ways, the entire discussion about how to avoid the fiscal cliff seems utterly foolish.

We need to tax more, and tighten up our safety net both in benefits and administration.

Tax more? Well, we are 31st among the 34 nations of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development in our tax-take, and 25th in spending. We are big spenders and small taxers.

The results are obvious. You don’t have to be director of the Office of the Budget to realize that taxing 15 percent of the gross domestic product, and spending 25 percent leaves a 10 percent deficit, or $1.6 trillion out of a GDP of $16 trillion.

That’s bad, but just wait until interest rates go up. A return to

1990’s acceptable interest rates would increase the federal government’s annual interest costs by $350 billion; or $3.5 trillion in Washington-talk which speaks in 10-year budget projections. Increased interest rates alone can make current arguments appear pretty insignificant.

It is amazing how one party can be so wrong for so long and still exist. But Republicans have contended since the coming of

Saint Ronald that lower tax rates will in some miraculous way pay for greater government expenditures.

And George the Warrior decided prolonged armed conflict in distant lands can make both our young people and our economic status healthier, especially if you lower taxes when you go to war, a feat never before performed.

Somewhere along the line, we should hear about what “income” is subject to taxes, and something about brackets. If one must earn a mill or two to be subjected to the highest marginal tax, that will lessen opposition but also collections.

We did two-thirds of our duty on Nov. 6, but I fear we will soon learn the high price for leaving the House undone.

Firewood bargains, not cheap Getting the most heating value per firewood dollar isn’t as simple as buying the cheapest cord available.

Buyers need to know what to look for and ask questions, said Charles Barden, forester with Kansas State University Research and Extension.

“A big point of confusion is that a cord is a measure of volume — 128 cubic feet.

On the other hand, heating value ties directly to wood density — its weight,” Barden said. “You have to understand this difference to know why an expensive cord of wood can sometimes be a bargain.”

Despite that, however, cords can have widely differing weights. And, the heavier (denser) they are, the more heating value they

have per cubic foot.

That’s why a cord of oak — considered a premium firewood — will always cost more than a cord of cottonwood, Barden said.

To complicate things further, some dealers only sell cords of “mixed hardwoods.”

“If you hear ‘mixed,’ you really need to start asking questions,” Barden said. “If a mixed cord contains mostly locust, hackberry and ash, it’s got plenty of heat value. If it’s mostly silver maple, elm and cottonwood, it had better be fairly cheap, because you’ll need lots. If it’s hedge, hickory and oak, that’s really good wood.

Both hedge and hickory are actually denser than oak.”

After the gathering, most Thanksgiving hosts find they have an abundance of turkey leftovers. Even if your family quickly tires of re-heated turkey, these leftovers can be counted among your Thanksgiving blessings with just a little planning. Cooked turkey freezes beautifully and can then be used in many dishes for a quick, easy meal. This is especially nice with the busy Holiday season upon us.

To prepare cooked turkey for freezing, simply de-bone and package measured amounts into freezer bags or freezer containers. Remove as much air as possible from the bag or container, and freeze. Frozen, cooked turkey should be used within four to six months for best quality and can be used in any recipe that calls for cooked turkey or chicken. Some recipe ideas include soups, white chili, enchiladas, casseroles, turkey tetrazzini, and my favorite, turkey pot pie.

Turkey Pot Pie In g red ients: ien ts: 1 recipe pastry for a (10 inch) double crust pie 4 tablespoons butter 1 sm all onion, m inced 2 stalks celery, chopped 2 carrots, diced 3 tablespoons dried parsley 1 teaspoon dried oregano salt and pepper to taste 2 cubes chicken bouillon 2 cups w ater 3 potatoes, peeled and cubed 1 1/2 cups cooked turkey, cubed 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1/2 cup m ilk s: D irectio nns: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Roll out bottom pie crust and place in the 10 inch pie pan and set aside.

Place 2 tablespoons of the butter in a large skillet. A dd the onion, celery, carrots, parsley, oregano, salt and pepper.

C ook and stir until the vegetables are soft. Stir in the bouillon and w ater. Bring m ixture to a boil. Stir in the potatoes, and cook until tender but still firm .

In a m edium saucepan, m elt the rem aining 2 tablespoons butter. Stir in the turkey and flour. A dd the m ilk, and heat through. Stir the turkey m ixture into the vegetable m ixture, and cook until thickened. Pour m ixture into the unbaked pie shell. Roll out the top crust, and place on top of filling. Flute edges, and m ake 4 slits in the top crust to let out steam .

Bake in the preheated oven for 15 m inutes. Reduce oven tem perature to 350 degrees and continue baking for 20 m inutes, or until crust is golden brow n.

Growing up, and well into my adulthood, my mom’s turkey pot pie was as eagerly anticipated following a holiday meal as the original meal itself. Her flaky, madefrom-scratch crust filled with a hearty mix of turkey and vegetables in thick gra-

County commissioner Dick Works expressed his desire to move forward with the discussions.

“I’ve been waiting five years for this meeting,” Works said.

The meeting concluded with a full list of positive aspects of Allen County, as well as opportunities for the future. Toland said the meeting is important and both parties need to recognize that agreements will not take place overnight.

“You don’t get married on the first date,” Toland said.

He was trained to be a calm dog. Vegas can sense if a student is upset and is never aggressive no matter the situation.

Stacey said the biggest benefit she has seen from Vegas has been the comfort he creates for students who usually wouldn’t visit with the school counselor.

“If a student is upset or crying, Vegas can sense it and will go and stand by them or put his head on their lap. It really is amazing.” Stacey said.

Vegas often works with the intellectually disabled students because he acts as a chance for the students to go and take him on daily walks.

“He is accepting of people, no matter what they smell like or how much money they have,” Stacey said.

Each day Stacey goes through basic commands with him.

She has taught him the command “down and under,” where Vegas will get under a table to stay out of the way at places like restaurants, “stay and wait,” for when Stacey needs to walk away for a minute, and “leave it,” which Stacey said comes in handy when they go into the lunch room and the kids try to sneak him food.

The students, faculty and staff have fallen in love with Vegas, Stacey said.

once a week and we are in November now but people will still come in and ask where he is,” Stacey said.

“Sometimes people will come by just to talk to Vegas and not me. It’s really funny actually.”

His co-workers are not the only ones who have fallen for Vegas. He has surpassed his position as therapy dog in the Crusinbery household and has become part of the family.

“When my daughter was an infant and she would cry Vegas would go lay in her room,” Stacey said. “He became attached really quickly.”

Time wasn’t a factor for Vegas. Stacey got him in June of 2006 and her daughter, Kaysin, was born in August. In less than two months Vegas was already part of the family.

“I have had dogs in the past and by far Vegas is the best I have ever had,” Stacey said.

Sewage issues have prompted a schedule change for Iola High School’s basketball teams early in the season.

Iola’s boys and girls will play a preseason tournament Dec. 4-7 in Burlington after tournament officials abandoned their original plans to play in Baldwin.

Baldwin Junior High’s locker rooms were deemed inaccessible because of “major” sewer issues — Baldwin athletics director Gary Stevanus announced in an email.

Repairs will take at least two to three weeks to complete — not in

time for the tournament.

Iola’s girls and boys will take on Burlington at 6 and 7:45 p.m., respectively, on Dec. 4 — a Tuesday — in the Burlington Middle School gymnasium.

Iola returns to Burlington Dec. 5, a Wednesday, to take on Louisburg. The girls will tip off again at 6, the boys at 7:45. Those games are at Burlington High School.

Results from the two preliminary rounds will determine the schedule for the championship rounds Dec. 7.

Misery hits high note as losing continues

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel laid out for his team Monday exactly what it will take to end their seven-game losing streak, then questioned whether the solution is even possible.

“We know we have to fight. We have to do everything in our power to be the best we can be, to be perfect,” he said during a break in meetings. “That’s what I told them, we have to be perfect because that’s the only way we have a chance.”

Later, Crennel admitted, “Nobody is ever perfect, you know.”

That doesn’t bode well for a team trying to reach mediocrity, much less perfection.

The Chiefs’ 28-6 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday dropped them to 1-9 on the season, their lone victory requiring a franchise-record 18-point comeback at New Orleans.

They’ve been ravaged by injuries, lead the league in turnovers, can’t settle on a quarterback and are now dealing with a See KC | Page B2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas has had only two full practices since a loss last week to Michigan State, the byproduct of a hectic travel schedule and a game squeezed in against Chattanooga.

The Jayhawks sure must have gotten a lot out of those workouts.

Travis Releford had 17 points, Perry Ellis added 12 and No. 12 Kansas finally looked like the Big 12’s team to beat while roaring to a 78-41 victory over Washington State on Monday night in the semifinals of the CBE Classic at the Sprint Center.

Kansas (3-1) will play Saint Louis in tonight’s championship game.

“We did a really good job moving the ball the first half, and of course, we made shots, and everything looks better when you make shots,” Kansas coach Bill Self said.

The Jayhawks shot 64 percent from the field in the first half, when they romped their way to a 50-21 lead, and then coasted down the stretch to a stunningly lopsided victory.

The Cougars shot just 29.1 percent from the field, went 4 of 22 from beyond the 3-point line and committed 14 turnovers while dishing out just seven assists.

They didn’t attempt a free throw until Motum converted a three-point play with 13 minutes left in the game.

Baylor upset throws wrench into Big 12 title chase

If college football fans think the BCS picture got all shook up with those losses by Kansas State and Oregon, they might want to look at the potential chaos in the Big 12.

Kansas State could still win the league, but the Wildcats’ 5224 loss at Baylor on Saturday set up the possibility for a four-way tie. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Texas could all sit at 7-2 at the end of the regular season Dec. 1.

If that happens, all would get a trophy declaring their Big 12 championship. But there would have to be some tiebreaker work done to determine who would get

the league’s BCS berth in the Fiesta Bowl, if not in the championship game.

For the quartet to finish 7-2, the 16th-ranked Longhorns would have to beat TCU and then win at Kansas State, while No. 21 Oklahoma State would have to win the Bedlam game in Norman, Okla., and prevail at Baylor. Also, the No. 13 Sooners would have to win at TCU. Head-to-head records would then decide which school gets a BCS berth.

Just last week, Kansas State had a clear path to the national title game, ranked No. 1 in the BCS standings. The Wildcats dropped five spots to sixth in the rankings after losing to a Baylor team still trying to become bowl eligible.

There’s also a possibility for a three-way tie similar to 2008 when Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Texas each finished 7-1 in Big 12 and 11-1 in regular season. This year it could be the Wildcats, Longhorns or Sooners in a three-way tie, or the Wildcats, Longhorns and Cowboys.

All the math becomes moot if Kansas State beats Texas to close the regular season.

With that, the only team that could match K-State’s 8-1 conference record would be Oklahoma, which lost to the Wildcats in the Big 12 opener Sept. 22. In that case, the Wildcats would get the Big 12’s BCS berth.

The Longhorns play on Thanksgiving against a Horned Frogs team that’s 3-1 on the road

Wildcat Jr. High girls sweep; boys split MORAN — Marmaton Valley Junior High’s boys A team was clicking on offense Monday.

Unfortunately, so was the Wildcats’ opponent.

Visiting Westphalia rolled to a 62-41 win in the boys A team contest. Marmaton Valley, meanwhile, broke out to an early lead in a 32-14 B team victory.

In girls action, Marmaton Valley’s A team got off to a slow start before finding its stride in the second quarter of a 23-20 win. The B team rolled to a 38-18 romp.

The offensive fireworks in the A team contest were fun for the crowd to watch, Wildcat coach Scott Brady said.

“I just wish we could have been on the winning end,” he said. “We played great on offense, but our defense, obviously, was almost non-existent. Throw in a few careless errors with the ball, and that was the difference in the game.

They have an incredibly talented team. It’s not very often you get to see over 100 points scored in a 24-minute junior high game.”

Trevor Wilson scored 21 points to pace Marmaton Valley. Justice Pugh followed with 12. Ethan Tavarez scored six and Derek Nixon two.

The B team jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the game’s first three minutes, and steadily increased its advantage from there.

“We did a really good job of moving the ball,” Brady said, “which led to a lot of easy buckets. I really like to see balanced scoring, and the guys spread the

Should the Sooners come out on top in their last two games, their fans would then be in the awkward position of pulling for the Longhorns to win at Kansas State.

Dana Holgorsen, whose West Virginia team has lost five straight, said the tight finish comes in a league that’s as strong as he’s seen it. He knows the Big 12 well, having spent eight years at Texas Tech with former coach Mike Leach and a season as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Thirty years after pulling off one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history, Chaminade knocked off another bigtime opponent.

The Division II Silverswords beat Texas 86-73 on Monday night at the Maui Invitational, topping a Butler buzzer-beater and an impressive showing from No. 9 North Carolina as the day’s main attraction.

The win came 30 years after Chaminade beat top-ranked Virginia in an upset nobody expected and few watched live.

This time, the world knew right away as the game was televised nationally and Chaminade immediately began trending worldwide on Twitter moments after the final buzzer.

Not bad for a Catholic school of 1,200 students with an athletics program a fraction of the size of the bigger names in the field.

“We are ecstatic,” Chaminade coach Eric Bovaird said.

“We believed all along that we had a chance to play with these guys over here. We knew if we got down to a close ballgame that there was a good chance we were going to win.”

It was a close ballgame — in the first half.

De’Andre Haskins scored 32 points and had nine rebounds as the Silverswords (3-1) turned the second half into a blowout.

Kevin Hu, a Taiwanese freshman, scored 16 points in 14 minutes off the bench.

“I don’t even know what to say,” said Haskins, who sat out last year because of an injury.

“I just wanted to play hard and play with my teammates.”

The win was just Chaminade’s seventh at the Maui Invitational since the tournament started in 1984. The host team has lost 76 at the tournament in that span.

“I have so much faith in my team, I will put them up against anybody in the country on a given night,” Bovaird said. “These guys have worked so hard to get where they are right now. You have no idea, they have worked just as hard as any Division I athlete.”

Texas (2-1) shot 46.4 percent for the game after making just one of eight 3-pointers in the first half. The Longhorns finished with 18 turnovers compared with just 10 assists, and made less than 57 percent of its free throws.

Maryland bolts 49ers roll over Bears in MNF blowout to Big Ten; Rutgers next?

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — Choosing to look toward the future rather than honor the past, Maryland joined the Big Ten on Monday, bolting from the Atlantic Coast Conference in a move driven by the school’s budget woes.

Maryland was a charter member of the ACC, which was founded in 1953. Tradition and history, however, were not as important to school President Wallace D. Loh as the opportunity to be linked with the prosperous Big Ten. “By being a member of the Big Ten Conference, we are able to ensure financially stability for Maryland athletics for decades to come,” Loh said, speaking at a news conference with Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany and Athletic Director Kevin Anderson.

Loh and other school officials involved in the decision decided that the potential money to be made in the Big Ten was more significant than the $50 million exit fee and the tradition associated with belonging to the same conference for 59 years.

“I am very aware that for many of our Terps fans and alumni, their reaction is stunned and disappointed. But we will always cherish the memories, the rivalries, the tradition of the ACC,” Loh said. “For those alumni and Terp fans, I will now

say this: I made this decision as best as I could ... to do what is best for the University of Maryland for the long haul.”

Maryland eliminated seven sports programs earlier this year, and Loh said the shift to the Big Ten could provide enough of a windfall to restore some of those sports.

Delany said Maryland’s entry was approved unanimously by the conference’s 12 presidents.

“Quite honestly, they were giddy,” Delany said.

“Maybe some people Fear the Turtle. We embrace the Turtle.”

Maryland will become the southernmost member of the Big Ten member starting, in July 2014.

Rutgers is expected follow suit by today, splitting from the Big East and making it an even 14 schools in the Big Ten, though Delany would not confirm that.

But he had no problem explaining why the Big Ten would be interested in stretching its boundaries from the Midwest.

“We realize that all of the major conferences are slightly outside of their footprint,” Delany said.

“We believe that the association is one that will benefit both of us.”

For Maryland, the move was not entirely based on athletics. Maryland will join the Committee on Institutional Cooperation, a consortium of world-class research institutions.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Aldon Smith’s high-flying defense gave Colin Kaepernick all kinds of extra chances in his first career NFL start.

And the Kaepernick looked little like a backup in delivering on nearly every one of those opportunities under the lights on football’s big stage.

The strong-armed Kaepernick passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns in place of the injured Alex Smith, Aldon Smith had 5 1/2 sacks, and the 49ers whipped the Chicago Bears 32-7 on Monday night in a highly anticipated NFC showdown that hardly lived up to the hype.

“I wanted to come out and show what I’m capable of and show that I can be a starter,” Kaepernick said.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to prove since I’ve been here.”

Releford was a big reason why.

The senior has earned a reputation for being a lockdown defender, and was a key piece of the team that advanced to last year’s national championship game.

But despite showing scoring ability, he’s never become one of the Jayhawks’ dependable offensive threats.

He was Monday night, hitting two 3-pointers and finishing 6 of 7 from the field.

“The lid’s been on the basket, and then he comes out and drove the ball hard,” Self said. “He was probably our best perform-

While the veteran was taking care of his business, the Jayhawks’ talented freshman class was doing its part. McLemore followed up a miss by Ellis with a thunderous dunk during their big first half and unveiled a silkysmooth outside jump shot.

McLemore opened the game with a 3-pointer, and added another moments later, as the Jayhawks shredded Bone’s zone defense with the kind of perimeter accuracy they’ve been lacking this season.

“One thing we did better was we ran offense to score in the first half,” Self said, “rather than run offense to run it.”

Elijah Johnson got into the act on offense with a 3 to give Kansas a 21-6 lead,

which forced Bone to call timeout. The Jayhawks ended up starting 8 of 10 from the field, and wound up 5 of 10 from beyond the arc over the first 20 minutes.

Washington State tried to get back into the game behind Motum, last year’s Pac-12 scoring leader. He scored six straight to keep the Cougars within 36-21, but the last basket with 6:44 left represented the final points Washington State would score before the break.

Kevin Young made a couple of free throws for Kansas, Releford made a 3-pointer and Ellis got to work inside. He stuck a put-back and twice down the stretch got to the foul line, where he was 6 of 6 in the first half, helping the Jayhawks close it with a 14-0 run.

The Twitter account for a fan group known as “Save Our Chiefs” recently surpassed 80,000 followers, about 17,000 more than the announced crowd on Sunday and probably twice as many as actually found their way inside the stadium during another disheartening loss.

“We love Kansas City.

We’re not upset at our fans,” linebacker Andy Studebaker said. “They have a right to be upset. In the NFL, you have to create a home-field advantage.

Budget cut talks worry small hospitals

LEOTI — In small towns like this across Kansas, hospital administrators are paying close attention to federal deficit-reduction talks in Washington, D.C. that could lead to a 2 percent cut in Medicare spending, starting Jan. 1.

“Two percent may not sound like much,” said Vicki Hahn, who runs the Wichita County Health Center in Leoti. “But we’re a ‘critical access hospital,’ which means we’re reimbursed for 101 percent of our Medicare costs. If 2 percent gets taken away, it would put us in the red on our Medicare patients.

That wouldn’t be good.”

Leoti is about 40 miles from Colorado and 110 miles from Oklahoma in a county where about 18 percent of the population is age 65 or older. Total county population is 2,276 people, according to most recent U.S. Census estimates.

“We’re a frontier county,” Hahn said.

Medicare patients account for about 78 percent of the patients seen by the publicly owned hospital.

A cut in Medicare reimbursement, Hahn said, would force the hospital to ask the Wichita County Commission for help in offsetting the loss of federal support.

“That would be a big concern,” Hahn said. “If we end up losing revenue that doesn’t get replaced, we would have to come up with a much different business model than the one we have now.”

Many Medicare patients

Wichita County Health Center’s situation is not unique. Because of the disproportionate number of rural and small-town Kansans who are elderly, most of the state’s small hospitals treat a relatively high percentage of Medicare patients. Medicare is the federal health program for persons age 65 and older.

Small rural hospitals like the Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse, where Dr. M. Ray Kenoyer is on staff, face a number of issues ranging from possible Medicare cuts, to workforce recruitment and needed upgrades for aging facilities. are on Medicare.

Blaine Miller has a similar story. He runs the Republic County Hospital in Belleville. He said a 2 percent reduction in Medicare reimbursement would lower hospital revenues by about $110,000.

“That would be big for us,” Miller said. “At the same time, our charity care had gone up substantially.

Last year, we had about $200,000 in charity care; this year we’re looking at about $300,000.”

Miller attributed the increase to the hospital’s nonMedicare patients either losing or not being able to afford their health insurance.

Among other things, the designation allows the hospitals to bill Medicare for 101 percent of their outpatient, inpatient, laboratory, physical therapy, and postacute care costs. The hospitals, in turn, agree to have no more than 25 beds, limit their inpatient stays to no more than 96 hours per patient annually, and provide 24-hour emergency room care.

Roger Masse, chief executive officer at Ellsworth County Medical Center, said a 2 percent cut in Medicare reimbursement would result in a $200,000 loss for the public hospital he manages.

“In Ellsworth County, that’s a lot of money,” he said, noting that a 3-mill property tax currently generates about $225,000 for the hospital.

“So far, operationally, we’ve been able to just about break even,” Masse said. “We haven’t had to ask the county for more than the 3 mills. But if we end up taking a $200,000 hit, how long can that be sustained?

In Kansas, nine counties — Linn, Woodson, Osage, Wabaunsee, Elk, Wallace, Gray, Chase and Doniphan — do not have a hospital.

But 10 counties — Barber, Harper, McPherson, Marion, Dickinson, Washington, Pottawatomie, Nemaha, Brown, Wilson — have two hospitals with 25 beds or less.

A future with fewer hospitals?

“There is so much required of hospitals nowadays, I don’t know that all of them can survive,” said Dennis Franks, chief executive office at Neosho Me-

morial Regional Medical Center in Chanute. “The requirements are the same for all of us, but our resources for meeting those requirements are different.”

Many of the state’s rural communities, he said, also are having a hard time recruiting medical staff, a situation that’s likely to worsen with implementation of the Affordable Care Act on Jan. 1, 2014, which could mean thousands of additional Kansans gaining access to health insurance either through the new subsidies provided for them to purchase private coverage or perhaps through Medicaid should state policymakers choose to expand the program.

Charity care and Medicaid

On the other hand, Franks also said he was concerned by reports that Gov. Sam Brownback may decide not to expand the state’s Medicaid program to include adults with incomes below 133 of the federal poverty level.

Currently, the Kansas Medicaid program is restricted mostly to poor children, pregnant women, the disabled and the elderly.

A non-disabled adult rearing children is currently eligible for Medicaid, if his or her income is below 32 percent of the poverty level — about $5,200 a year for a young mother with two children. Childless adults are not eligible for Medicaid regardless of their income.

Many of these adults now rely on hospital emergency rooms for routine medical care, resulting in the hospitals providing millions of dollars in uncompensated care.

To offset the costs of expanding Medicaid eligibility, the Affordable Care Act calls for phasing out federal payments to hospitals that care for disproportionately high numbers of uninsured patients who can’t pay their bills.

Hospitals, Franks said, cannot afford to lose the “disproportionate share” payments without a corresponding reduction in char-

ity care.

“That would really hurt a lot of hospitals,” he said.

Currently, Kansas hospitals receive about $41 million in disproportionate share payments annually.

KanCare changes

Hospital administrators also are waiting to see how they will be affected

by KanCare, the governor’s plan to move virtually all of the state’s Medicaid enrollees into managed care plans run by private insurance companies.

“At this point, we don’t know how that’s going to work out,” said Denny Hachenberg, chief executive officer at Anderson County Hospital in Garnett. “But it’s like I tell my board, ‘There’s nobody out there looking for ways to pay us more for what we do.’”

Losing proposition

According to the National Rural Health Association, 41 percent of the nation’s critical access hospitals are losing money.

If the White House and Congress allow a reduction in Medicare reimbursement, the percentage of rural hospitals operating in the red is sure to increase, said Brock Slabach, a senior vice president at the association.

“As of this moment, this (reduction) is real,” he said.

“It’s in the law, it’s part of the Budget Control Act of 2011, and it will happen on Jan. 1.

“That’s not to say there won’t be an act of Congress between now and Dec. 31 to reverse some of what’s in the act,” he said. “But that’s going to require quite a bit of negotiation on the part of the president and Congress. It’s possible, certainly, but it’s also possible that it won’t happen.”

In addition to the 2 percent reduction in Medicare reimbursement, the Obama administration has twice proposed lowering payments to critical access hospitals by 1 percent.

Both times, Slabach said, the president’s proposals were considered “dead on arrival” and were soon dropped.

But there is no telling what lies ahead.

“What’s happened is that the president has let it be known that he’s open to the notion of using CAH (critical access hospital) payments as a ‘pay for’ for other programs,” Slabach said.

“He’s ‘put it in the water,’ if you will.”

Larned State Hospital gets superintendent

TOPEKA — Dr. Tom Kinlen has been named superintendent of Larned State Hospital.

Kinlen was the hospital’s director of psychology since 2008 and has been the hospital’s interim director since May. His promotion was announced Monday by Shawn Sullivan, secretary of the Kansas Department for Ag-

ing and Disability Services.

“Dr. Kinlen has demonstrated his ability to see the big picture, as well as take care of the small but vital details that go into supervising an organization the size and complexity of Larned,” Sullivan said. “Under his leadership, the hospital has made significant progress toward resolving some of its most challenging problems.”

Larned is one of three state hospitals for the mentally ill. It also is home to the state’s sexual predator unit.

It has experienced a range of problems over the past several months, most of them related to the facility’s high staff turnover rates.

Pay raises recently were approved for the hospital’s nurses in an effort to boost hiring and retention.

According to DCF officials, since April the hospital has hired 105 full-time, direct-care staff, including 19 in October.

A new medical director, Dr. Ralph Bharati was hired along with a new chief pharmacist, Janet Finger.

Also hired were an additional psychiatrist, two new psychologists, a litigation attorney and a due-process coordinator.

Timing critical to T-day

When Thanksgiving rolls around, most cooks wonder the same thing: How do I pull off this most intimidating dinner of the year?

Years ago, I came up with this plan of attack. I reread it every year, and now I offer it to you.

The main challenge of hosting Thanksgiving dinner is not the actual cooking, it’s the timing. The sheer number of dishes, coupled with a bird that takes anywhere from 2 1/2 to 5 hours to roast, can give angst to even the most confident cook.

In fact, the bird bestows a great gift upon the cook because it must rest anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes after it is removed from the oven. During the rest, the juices will settle back into the meat so they don’t spill out onto the cutting board when you start to carve.

Thirty minutes after a 14-pound bird comes out of the oven, it will still be too hot to carve; an hour’s rest is optimal.

Once the turkey is out of the oven, your side dishes can go in. Most oven-based Thanksgiving side dishes can be made ahead of time, an opportunity you should vigorously exploit. Take them out of the refrigerator while the turkey is cooking so they are at room temperature when the turkey leaves the oven: It should take about an hour for most chilled dishes to come to room temperature. There will be no trouble heating them through by mealtime.

Limit yourself to one stovetop side dish. This usually will be the green vegetable, and this also can be done largely ahead of time. For green beans amandine, for example, boil the beans in salted water until they are just tender.

Drain and plunge them into ice water. When they’re cool, drain again, towel-dry and store in a resealable plastic bag overnight in the refrigerator. Take them out while the turkey cooks so they can come to room temperature. You will need less than 10 minutes to saute them in butter with slivered almonds.

The schedule:

Let’s say you’re cooking a 14-pound turkey and dinner is planned for 6 p.m.

Here is a proposed time line: 1:45 p.m. Turkey goes into the oven.

4:30 p.m. All refrigerated side dishes out on the counter.

5:10 p.m. Soup starts to warm on the stovetop.

5:15 p.m. Turkey out of the oven and side dishes go in.

5:20 p.m. Start gravy.

5:45 p.m. Pan, utensils and ingredients are readied for stovetop vegetable.

6 p.m. Guests sit down to eat first course. At this point, the uncarved turkey can be brought in and displayed.

6:10 p.m. The team of three excuses itself. Designated carver starts on turkey; vegetable cook starts on the vegetable.

6:15 p.m. First course is cleared.

6:20 p.m. Side dishes are brought to table.

6:25 p.m. Carved turkey makes its appearance, and the meal proceeds.

Do three exes add up to trouble?

Tell Me About It

Dear Carolyn: After 30 years, an old high school “girlfriend” (mostly hookups) has contacted me expressing her regret that we never “had that opportunity to further our relationship.” We have emailed for a month now and I find her smart, funny and interesting, but I have a concern: She is three times divorced.

Is it possible that her repeated failures in that department were not her fault, as she says? Her exes were substance abusers and adulterous, by her claims.

I am wary of getting involved. Am I being too judgmental? Should I be open to the idea that she just had bad luck? By the way — I am divorced once and at 50 do not want to waste my time on someone who is unstable. Would you get involved with someone with three exes?

Re-connections I won’t say yea or nay to getting involved with someone thrice divorced, since circumstances, timing and lessons learned are too personal to judge collectively — but I sure would want to know the stories. For example, one youthful oops marriage,

one marriage to someone who became an addict, one marriage that lasted decades until the spouse had an affair or something . . . well, running away would almost seem punitive of someone who gave a goodfaith effort to get it right.

If instead each divorce had a similar story behind it, then I wouldn’t stick around unless I felt darn sure the person had had the “Eureka!” moment and done the hard work of breaking unhealthy habits — starting with accepting responsibility for making bad choices.

Since you’re talking about someone who apparently married the same general pathology three times, and who is blaming the exes for that vs. noting the pattern in her own choices, and who is fishing in the electronic waters of 30 years ago, I’d urge you to write your next e-mail without the input of any organ south of your brain.
