A forum hosting candidates in local races will be at 5:30 p.m. today in the basement of Community National Bank, 120 E. Madison. Allen County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the event. Included are candidates for Allen County sheriff, Jared Froggatte, Kelly Zellner and current sheriff, Bryan Murphy; candidates for Allen County attorney, Linus Thuston, currently Neosho County attorney, and Jerry Hathaway, current Allen County attorney; and candidates for Allen County commission, Ron Ballard, and Tom Williams, who currently serves as chairman of the Allen County Commission.

Iola eyes budget cuts, tax increase By RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register

Iola City Council members will be asked tonight to approve a number of measures to close an $800,000 shortfall in expenses and revenues for 2017. City Administrator Carl Slaugh already has instituted an across-the-board, 5-percent spending cut for 2016 because of a projected deficit. Iolan enters SNAP challenge with skepticism By SUSAN LYNN The Iola Register

Ashley Widener comes to the challenge of living on food stamps for one month with a healthy dose of skepticism. First off, she wonders if the SNAP program enables people to be unproductive, knowing that assistance is available. Secondly, she thinks the program is too lax with its oversight of applicants. Fred Kipp, one of the most accomplished athletes ever to roam the halls at Iola High School, carries the distinction of being one of only three players in Major League Baseball history to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. And of course, the 84-year-old has plenty of stories of life on the diamond.
