Beardens bring the farm By SUSAN LYNN susan@iolaregister.com
Debbie and Duwayne Bearden believe everyone has a touch of farmer in them. And they’d like to help bring it out. The Beardens are this year’s marshals for FarmCity Days, representing the ag side of the equation. Today they raise cattle and poultry on their 80acre farm one mile east of Allen County Airport, as well as 100 acres they lease from Barbara Diehl east of LaHarpe. They also are the “face” of Allen County’s Farmers Market, reborn after a lapse of several years. The Beardens are strong advocates of the farm-totable movement, where consumers take an interest

Sweethearts in parade By KAYLA BANZET kayla@iolaregister.com
Some people get cards or a cake for their birthday, but Beverly Johnson gets to ride in the FarmCity Days parade. Beverly and Bob Johnson are city grand marshals of the parade on Saturday, which happens to be Beverly’s 70th birthday. Bob and Beverly grew up in Humboldt and have been married for nearly 48 years. They had their first date in 1957, when they were 14 and freshmen in high school. “He called and asked me to go to a party with him down at the park,” Beverly said. “We played spin the bottle.” Beverly went to beauty school in Kansas City and worked in Iola and Chanute. After having their two children, Brenda and Bob, she decided to be a stay-

Government shutdown ends after 16 days WASHINGTON (AP) — By the thousands, furloughed federal workers began returning to work across the country Thursday after 16 days off the job due to the partial government shutdown. The Office of Personnel Management announced that workers should return to work on their next regularly scheduled work day, noting that is Thursday for most workers. Nationwide, hundreds of thousands of workers have been furloughed since the shutdown began Oct. 1. The office encouraged agencies to be flexible for a smooth transition by allow-
ing telework and excused absences in some cases. “We’re back from the (hashtag)shutdown!” the Smithsonian Institution declared on Twitter, announcing that its 19 museums would reopen Thursday. The National Zoo was scheduled to reopen Friday. The returning workers’ presence will be felt on the roads and rails in the Washington region, where commutes have been less crowded over the past two weeks. The regional transit agency, Metro, reported a 20 percent drop in ridership when the shutdown began and has said See SHUTDOWN | Page A4
