2. Kelly’s opponent in the race for governor, At torney General Derek Schmidt, was for eliminat ing the state’s constitution al protections for abortion rights. After the results of the vote, he said that all along he has favored excep tions. That should be no consolation. If he is elected governor, Schmidt could be expected to rubber stamp further restrictions. As a legislator, he always voted to further restrict a wom an’s access to abortion.

Six of seven judges on the Kansas Supreme Court face retention elections in No vember, five of whom were appointed by moderate Re publican or Democratic gov ernors. If voters oust any of these judges, then the next governor picks their replace ments. How can conservatives use this process to ban abortion?

I UNDERSTAND Kelly’s hesitancy to campaign on what she views as such a divisive subject as abor tion rights, because for every friend there’s a foe. And it’s exhausting.

And yes, it feels good to see pictures of ribbon cut tings and groundbreakings rather than demonstra tions and protests.

And, our candidates for governor should answer tough questions about abor tion, even if they prefer dodg ing them. Will abortion affect their judicial appointments? Would they sign an abortion ban? Do they support abor tion ban exceptions for rape, incest or the life or health of women?Sorather than being set tled, your choices in Novem ber will absolutely affect abortion access in Kansas. Now that abortion bans are a political reality in America, don’t expect this issue and its complicated politics to disap pear.

Abortion back on the ballot

Opinion A7 The Iola Register Saturday, September 10, 2022 ~ Journalism that makes a difference

Abortion is on the No vember ballot in Kansas, at least indirectly. Our judicial and gubernatorial elections are critical for determining whether Kansas moves to ward banning abortion long term. But most Kansas voters are pro-choice and just reject ed an anti-abortion constitu tional amendment. Didn’t that settle the issue?

Let’sNo. say that your goal is banning abortion in Kansas. Maybe you support Kansas House Bill 2486 that would have banned abortion except in limited circumstances, with no exception for rape, incest or many threats to women’s life or health. How do you get that ban into law?

Strategy one: Constitution al Thisamendment.wasthe amendment that just failed. It would have reversed the Kansas Su preme Court’s Hodes ruling on abortion access, allowing Kansas legislators to then banKansansabortion.voted in huge numbers against that amend ment, but many conservative activists are struggling to ac cept those results. Some have alleged imaginary largescale voter fraud. Others have delegitimized the vote, saying that Kansans were “fooled” or “misled.” Others have said they will just find another way to ban abortion.

In 1776, people around here and in Boston and Philadel phia and down South right ly rebelled against England and won our independence, breaking with his majesty King George’s long train of abuses and usurpations. Though British government isn’t built on the foundation of a written docu ment (apart from the Magna Carta), it does rest on power ful unwritten traditions that have given the U.K. stable government for centuries, no small thing.

The death of the queen (there’s only one queen) might have come as “a shock,” as new British Prime Minister Liz Truss said out side No. 10 Downing St., but it was certainly not a surprise. When Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952, the cry was “Long live the Queen.” That she did, with dignity and decency, all the way to 96. Having been the United King dom’s monarch for 70 years, Elizabeth was the constant ever since Winston Churchill was PM and Harry Truman president.Churchill led the govern ment at Elizabeth’s request, just as Truss was asked to serve the other day, with sev en decades of politicians in between. Of course, the PM is the leader of the largest

Later that year, they crafted legislation that put the measure on this summer’s primary ballot asking voters to overturn the Kansas Constitution’s abortion protections.

Males numbered 8,966 and females 9,221 among the 18,176 inhabitants of Allen County enumerated in the 1950 Census, according to fi nal figures announced by the Bureau of the Census. The county’s population includ ed 17,778 whites, 331 Negroes and 68 persons of other rac es. The median age was 35.1 years, while 14.5 percent were 65 years or older.

More than 922,000 Kan sas — just over 47% of reg istered voters — voted on the abortion measure. That turnout is typical of a No vember general election. Of those, 180,000 were not affiliated with any politi cal party, and as such are generally prevented from voting in a primary elec tion. Measures to change the state constitution, how ever, are open to all voters, regardless of their affilia tion with a political party.

tices voted this summer to overturn Roe v. Wade and deny women federal pro tection to access safe and legal abortions, more wom en and more young people began registering to vote. In Kansas, 70% of new vot er registrations after the high court’s decision were women. Nationwide, about 30% of new voter registra tions are by those age 25 and younger.

Cue strategy two: Chang ing the courts.

It appears Gov. Laura Kelly doesn’t want her campaign to ride the tail winds of the cataclysmic Aug. 2 vote that preserved Kansas women’s reproduc tiveThoughrights. the outcome proved the majority of Kansans are not aligned with their legislators’ re pressive abortion policies, the Kelly campaign is not promoting her role in pro tecting abortion rights.

During these times of high inflation, Kelly’s suc cesses no doubt are making a positive difference to our pocketbooks and especially bode well for the future.

IN HER campaign against Schmidt, Kelly is vying for Republican votes by focusing on the state’s now-robust economy, her commitment to fully fund ing public education, her administration’s efforts in bringing a record number of new investments and industries to the state, and her proposal to eliminate the sales tax on food, which legislators enacted effec tive January 2023.

Two things to note:

No matter your position on abortion, your bottom line is this: If you keep the Kansas Supreme Court judges, that likely protects abortion ac cess for now. If you oust the judges, you raise the odds of an abortion ban.

reverse its own decision on the case to enable banning abortion. That likely re quires changing the judges on the court. How does that happen? When court openings oc cur, a nominating commis sion reviews applicants on merit and presents the gov ernor with three finalists. The governor appoints one. This helps depoliticize court politics by limiting executive power, but governors often still exercise some ideolog ical influence over their ap pointments.Judgesmust then face peri odic retention votes. If voters keep a judge, the judge serves a six-year term. If voters oust a judge, then the governor ap points a replacement.

That’s a shame. Because she’s been instrumental.

age politics to the extent pos sible to appoint new judges who are more anti-abortion. Four: The new judges must reverse Hodes. Five: The Kansas Legislature then passes an abortion ban. Six: Schmidt signs that ban.

Step one: Oust judges this November. Two: Elect Repub lican Derek Schmidt as the next governor. Three: Lever

Obviously, it would have been easier for conservatives if Kansans had passed the abortion amendment and allowed them to skip to step five immediately, but that didn’t happen. That leaves conservatives with taking a more complicated and longer route to an abortion ban.

Both as a legislator and as a governor, Kelly has fought for those rights.

“The biggest thing coming from quarterbacks like that,” Mahomes explained, “and es pecially the ones that played a long time and been great for a long time, is they understand how to do stuff the way the quarterback wants it done.”

What matters more is how the Bills will look come January, when the stakes get higher and opposing teams have had a chance to gel over the course of a season.

Overall, the Bills provided encourag ing answers to various questions they faced en tering the opener.

Chiefs’ new receivers have experience with elite QBs

In other words, they all played at a similarly elite lev el to Mahomes, who also has a Super Bowl ring around his finger along with making four trips to the Pro Bowl and winning an MVP award of his own.“Sometimes when you get guys from other places, they just run the route how it’s supposed to be ran,” Ma homes said, “but these guys have a great understanding of not only running the route, but understanding the cover age as they’re running it and how it affects everybody.”

You got Mecole (Hardman), who’s already been on big stages (in Kansas City). Obviously me coming from where I came from — we’ve all played on big stag es.”

With big-time quarter backs.Rodgers, Brady and Roeth lisberger are all Super Bowl champions. In fact, they have combined to hoist the Lom bardi Trophy 10 times, along with making 31 trips to the Pro Bowl, winning seven MVP awards and six Super Bowl MVPs.

— Ever since Marquez Val des-Scantling signed a freeagent deal with the Chiefs this past offseason, the veter an wide receiver has had peo ple asking him what he’s do ing right in life to earn such good fortune at quarterback. Must be something to go from spending four years with Aaron Rodgers to catch ing passes from Patrick Ma homes.Yet the same question could be posed to Justin Wat son, who has spent the past two seasons catching balls from Tom Brady, or JuJu Smith-Schuster, who spent his first five years in the NFL hauling in heaves from Ben Roethlisberger.Becausewhen the Chiefs decided to replace Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill with a committee approach earlier this year, they landed a trio of playmakers for Ma homes that bring along the unique experience of playing with elite quarterbacks.

Clark is due back in court early next year, when he will need to show proof that he completed his sentence.

The 29-year-old Clark is coming off a disappointing season in which he had 4½ sacks, his lowest total since his rookie season. He has 88 tackles and 18½ sacks during 40 regular-season games in Kansas City.

Mahomes tried to speed up the acclimatization process for the newcomers during the offseason, when he invit ed each of them to his home in Texas for some unscripted workouts. It was done with the blessing of Chiefs coach Andy Reid, and it gave them an opportunity to learn what Mahomes wants out of them before training camp even be gan.The work appeared to pay off in the preseason: Kansas City reached the end zone ev ery series the starters played.

Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark pleaded no contest in Los Angeles on Thursday to two counts of misdemean or possession of an assault weapon and was sentenced to one year of probation and 40 hours of community service.

“Of course it gives us a lot of confidence, probably even overcon fidence,” receiver Gabe Davis said. “But we have to know we have to keep level-headed and keep pushing and keep work ing.”

Dear Dr. Roach: My husband and I recently achieved the near impos sible task of becoming at tached to a family doctor! After many years without getting tested, our first order of business was a complete blood panel test, which — to our horror — showed that we both have high cholesterol. Our re sults are almost identical with high HDL, normal LDL, good ratios and low triglycerides, but our total cholesterol is flagged as high.We are both 52-yearold endurance athletes of normal BMI. We aim for a Mediterranean-style diet, being mostly vegetarian, with no red/processed meat, minimal dairy, two cups of espresso per day and light red wine con sumption. Neither of us has a family history of high cholesterol, or any type of heart disease. We are non-smokers. A cur sory look online shows

In the season‘s first Cup Series Playoff race, Jones held off Denny Hamlin in a 20-lap run to the finish to win the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway for the second time.

ELSEWHERE, Marmaton Valley High’s Kiowa Bloemer earned a 19th-place medal in his varsity boys race at the Fort Scott Invitational, while teammate Zach Allee took 29th. Their times weren’t immediately available.

And the playoff picture remained just as uncertain as it had been entering the grueling 500-mile contest at “The Lady in Black.”After a catastrophic playoff opener, Elliott, the Regular Season Champion, is the series leader no more.

Elliott nursed his car to pit road where his team tried in vain to repair the damage, but with the right-rear toe link and upper and lower control arms broken, the task was hopeless. The 10-minute time allotment under NASCAR‘s damaged vehicle policy ran out, and Elliott retired from the race in last place (36th).The 15-point advantage Elliott carried into the playoffs was gone. Elliott scored the minimum one point for his efforts at Darlington and fell to ninth in the playoff standings, 14 points ahead of 16th-place finisher Austin Cindric in 13th.
