Kent Thompson doesn’t admit to pessimism when he talks about the 2016 legislative session that opens Monday in Topeka, but there also isn’t much optimism found in his thoughts. Thompson represents the Ninth District in the Kansas House, which constitutes much of Allen and Neosho counties, including Iola and Chanute.

What does he foresee for the session? “Not much,” he said. In Thompson’s estimation, the die is already cast. Gov. Sam Brownback has announced he Rep. Kent will tolerate Thompson no further See THOMPSON | Page A6

Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel, one of Iola’s benchmark businesses for nearly a century, is growing. Funeral director Dave Yokum announced Thursday the addition of Audrey George and Bryce Gorrell, bringing the funeral home’s staff to six. George will serve as a funeral director at WaughYokum & Friskel. She’s a

licensed funeral director already, and lives in Humboldt. Gorrell is studying to complete his bachelor’s degree in funeral service at the University of Central Oklahoma. A Centerville native, he will live and work in Iola while he completes his schooling. Yokum is the fourth generation of his family to run the the funeral home since D.C. For someone who manufactures athletic wear, Tyler Haney has a refreshing viewpoint on exercise. Instead of “going for the burn,” Haney wants people to simply move — and do it in comfort and style. Her mantra — doing things is better than not doing things — is taking Haney’s business, Outdoor Voices, to levels beyond her wildest dreams. Haney, 27, was recently listed in Forbes magazine’s “30 under 30,” where young entrepreneurs are noted for their accomplishments.

The exposure, she said, “has definitely helped make things come together a lot quicker than I expected. It’s also helped validate our vision to become a competitive outdoor clothing brand.” Haney visited with this Register reporter from OV’s headquarters in New York City. She also has a store in Austin, Texas, which Haney refers to as “my spiritual home.” “People’s perspective on life is just so healthy there,” she said. Haney is the granddaughter of Iola’s Mary Anna See HANEY | Page A5
