Mammoth joints of 36-inch pipe began arriving in Humboldt Wednesday morning.
HUMBOLDT — A steady stream of highway transports carried huge sections of 36-inch pipe into a storage yard at the north edge of Humboldt Wednesday. The pipe, manufactured in Canada, came up from Chanute, where it arrived on rail cars. The joints came in varied lengths, with most 80 feet long and walls generally half an inch thick. The pipe yard at Humboldt is one of several along the Flanagan Pipeline route that will cover 600 miles from Flanagan, Ill., to Cushing, Okla. Delivery of pipe to

the yard, constructed earlier this year, is a visible precursor of construction due to hit high gear before long. Kevin O’Connor, an Enbridge spokesman, said that work will occur simultaneously in four 150-mile “spreads,” with construction in the area containing Allen County will start in Linn County and go south of the Kansas-Oklahoma line. “The start of construction was just authorized this week,” O’Connor said. “It will take a few days to get under way.” Initial construction will involve clearing paths through crop fields, with arSee PIPELINE | Page A4
Unleash the power Speaker pushes IHS students to full potential Some might say Kyle Baker is quite the overachiever. While attending Carroll College in Helena, Mont., he started on four national championship football teams and earned All-American three times. He was impressive as a student, and at graduation delivered the class address. He’s even in the National Football Hall of Fame. “Then that stopped; but I didn’t,” Baker told Iola High School seniors of his high school experiences. Baker visited with IHS students Wednesday morning in the lecture hall. He also attended a teacher inservice last week to help boost teacher morale.
“My goal, my mission, is to unleash the power of good that you have within you,” Baker said. Baker specializes in school culture and leadership development and is the founding director of Peak Collaborative. Peak Collaborative centers on three pillars, leadership, culture and education. He previously worked as program coordinator for the Institute for Excellence & Ethics. While there, he co-authored the Power2Achieve program. As an exercise for the students, Baker gave each an index card and a sheet of paper. On the index card students were to write what they love. Immediately, the students See SPEAKER | Page A4

On the outside, nothing appears different at the doctors’ clinic on the east edge of town. On the inside, two longtime physicians with The Family Physicians have split off to join the Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas. Drs. Glen Singer and Brian Wolfe, along with several nurses and other employees, officially became employees of the CHC/SEK on Monday. Drs. Becky Lohman, Frank Porter and Tim Spears and their crew will remain under the umbrella of The Family Physicians. The three physicians are in the process of buying The Family Physicians from Singer and Wolfe, who formed the practice in 1988. The two practices will share their current location. Even the phone number, 3653115, will connect patients to either practice. SINGER and Wolfe joined the CHC/SEK so they could treat a broader spectrum of patients, they said Wednesday evening. The Pittsburgbased clinic is a federally qualified health clinic, which means its purpose is to help serve a populace that cannot afford adequate health care. All of southeast Kansas is designated as such. The CHC/SEK also has a combination of medical, dental and mental health clinics in Pittsburg, Coffeyville, Baxter Springs and Independence. The designation garners higher reimbursement rates from the federal government for patient charges. The fed-
erally funded clinic is also referred to as a safety net clinic in that it “catches” people who otherwise would not be treated by health professionals in private practice. The new clinic will accept patients with or without health insurance. About 1,800-2,000 Allen County residents do not have any form
