LAHARPE — Three weeks into being director of Allen County Animal Rescue Facility, Wendy Stahl couldn’t be any happier. “I’m passionate about animals,” said Stahl, who has several dogs and cats as pets. Stahl, 41, and her husband Russell and their family live in Garnett. Stahl took ACARF’s reins from Andi DePriest, who left for employment at Red Barn Veterinary Clinic. Stahl comes with experience. She has worked about 12
years as a dog groomer, and has been associated full time with other pet shelters, including being an assistant manager. “I love animals,” Stahl said, and it shows. A kitten cuddled next to her cheek while Stahl gushed about her new role with ACARF. The first test came quickly. Thursday state animal health officials came to inspect the shelter. “We passed with flying colors,” Stahl crowed. Stahl envisions no changes of any magnitude in the way the shelter is run or in techniques for caring for animals, although as she settles in occasional tweaking is likely. She is assisted in daily chores by four full-time employees, two part-time and a handful of volunteers. “One thing I’d like to add is an organized group of See ACARF | Page A4
HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — The recent rainfall in Kansas has shattered records across the state and helped ease drought conditions in some sections of the state, according to weather experts. Mary Knapp, state climatologist, said that in the first nine days of August, 144 daily precipitation records were broken across the state. Four of those records were in Hutchinson, including a 6-inch rainfall on Aug. 4 that broke the record for the amount of daily rainfall for any day in August, The Hutchinson News reported. The previous record was set last year when 3.3 inches of rain fell on Aug. 25, 2012. About 75 percent of a year’s precipitation happens between May and September, with June typically the wetSee RAINFALL | Page A4
Statehouse renovations near finish TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A new copper skin is emerging on the roof and dome of the Kansas Statehouse from a beehive of construction equipment, the latest sign the historic building’s face lift is nearing completion. The task of replacing the worn copper on the building is one of the final major pieces of a $332 million renovation project that began more than a decade ago in Topeka. The project, completed in phases, restored the building to a look of nearly a century ago while providing new office space for state officials and legislators. The replacement of the roof should be completed by late November, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported. Inside the dome, craftsmen will install marble, wood and plaster similar to other locations in the building to finish off the interior of the dome. See STATEHOUSE | Page A4
Starting the school year off with a splash Despite the rainy weather Friday, young swimmers gather at the Iola Municipal Pool to celebrate the annual Midnight Splash: Back to School event. Milo “Drumsticks” Combs made an appearance at the event. He took a photo op with kids and then led them in a chicken dance competition. The party was for USD 257 students attending kindergarten through sixth grade.
