STORMS PACK A WALLOP Humboldt takes brunt of Nature’s wrath By BOB JOHNSON and RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register

A spring-like storm that hit without warning wreaked havoc in Humboldt Thursday night and drenched Iola with more than 4 inches of rain. Humboldt’s business district sustained heavy damage from gale-force winds and heavy rains. Hundreds of limbs and some trees were felled. While no official classification has been made that the storm contained a tornado, radar images did show a hook in the clouds — precursor of a tornado — and the swirling clouds appeared to have a circular pattern. In the northwest part of town the wind roared from the west and northwest; in the east part from the south. Heaviest damage was to the home of Elvin and Earline Nelson and two down-

Denise and Craig Mentzer

Mentzers a team By SUSAN LYNN The Iola Register

If the sun is shining today, it will have a direct bearing on Craig and Denise Mentzer, farm marshals for this year’s Farm-City Days. With the corn safely stored away, their last worry of the season is soybeans. Wednesday morning, moisture content was 16 percent. Optimum is 13-15. After Thursday’s prolonged rains the danger is that the pods may open. They now need a long spate of sunny weather not only to dry out the beans but also the

fields. “With these big combines, they’ll chew up the fields if they’re the slightest bit wet,” Craig said. If Mother Nature comes through, “I think this will be the best bean crop we’ve ever had. The prices look decent. I’m hoping for 50 bushels an acre.” Craig quickly douses that optimism with skepticism, just for good luck. “Of course they could go from 50 bushels to 10 overnight if the weather turns bad. Two years ago they went from 35 bushels to 13 when a hailstorm came See MENTZERS | Page A2

There was a time Donna Culver probably should have been considered as a farm marshal for the FarmCity Days celebration. Alas, Culver’s roots on a farm in rural Woodson County still remain, but she’s been a “city slicker” in Iola for decades. As such, Culver was designated as the city marshal for this year’s festival. The designation honors Culver’s countless hours as a volunteer through a number of organizations, work that dwarfs most folks half her age. Culver, 83, is best known as the face of the Neosho Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. She’s usually among the first on the scene of disasters, such as house fires or severe storms, to sort out the victims’ needs, and helps connect them with avenues for help. Culver also is an American Legion Auxiliary member for more than two decades, including her current term as chapter president; one of the charter members of Allen County Crime Stoppers; volunteers at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center; delivers meals to homebound

Culver notes her pace has slowed in recent years. “I’m tickled to let other people do things to make sure everything gets done,” she said. And she no longer underSee CULVER | Page A8
