French Drive to succeed pays off in classroom choose centrist By RICHARD LUKEN The Iola Register
PARIS (AP) — French President-elect Emmanuel Macron laid the groundwork today for his transition to power, announcing a visit to Ger- Emmanuel many and a Macron name change for his political movement and appearing with his predecessor at a solemn World War II commemoration. Macron handily defeated far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen in Sunday’s presidential runoff, and now must pull together a majority of lawmakers for his year-old political movement to run in the mid-June legislative election. A competitive streak pays off handsomely in the field of athletics, where participants are driven to improve on a daily basis. Sydney Wade, who excelled in basketball, volleyball and softball throughout her high school career, used the same approach to the classroom. That zeal to compete started, naturally enough, with her twin brother, Garrett. “We were really competitive in elementary school,” Wade recalled. Then, as the Wade twins grew older, and Sydney met new classmates whom she admired, that helped up her game. “I just had to keep going to get to their level,” she recalled. And while Wade soon became one of the most decorated individual players in Iola High basketball history, it’s her academic prowess that will be hon-

Fifty-four area children became the luckiest kids in town Saturday during a bike giveaway sponsored by Humanity House. Children who were preregistered were given a bike and a safety helmet. The gifts came with the condition they complete four hours of assigned community service work. Tracy Keagle, director of Humanity House, told the children acts of kindness change the impression people have of them. After the bikes were distributed, Iola Police officers David Shelby, Mike Aronson
and Tim Francis taught a basic safety and maintenance course. Several children who already owned bikes also showed up to take the safety course, Humanity House worker Sabrina Greer said. Keagle encouraged the children to take care of their new bikes and offered them the opportunity to trade them in for larger bikes in two years. The giveaway was a joint effort. Walmart donated $500 toward the purchase of the bikes and Iola Insurance donated the helmets. SafeBase also made a monetary contribution and Ellen Glover donated four bikes, raising See BIKES | Page A4
