WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden, in his first major gun control measures since taking office, is announcing executive actions Thursday aimed President Joe at address- Biden ing what the White House calls a “gun violence public health epidemic.” Biden also is nominating David Chipman, a former federal agent and adviser at the gun control group Giffords, to be director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Biden has faced increasing pressure to act after a recent series of mass shootings, but the White House has repeatedly emphasized the need for legislative action. While the House passed a background-check bill last month, gun control measures face slim prospects in an evenly divided Senate, where Republicans remain near-unified against most proposals. A White House fact sheet said those shootings “underscored the relentlessness” of the epidemic. Biden is to be joined at the late morning Rose Garden event by Attorney General Merrick Garland. Most of the actions are coming from the Justice Department. Biden is tightening regulations of buyers of “ghost guns” — homemade firearms that usually are assembled from parts and milled with a metal-cutting machine and often lack serial numbers used to trace them. It’s legal to build a gun in a home or a workshop and there is no federal requirement for a background check. The goal is to “help stop the proliferation of these firearms,” according

Are some vaccines more effective? By LAURAN NEERGAARD The Associated Press
Are some COVID-19 vaccines more effective than others? It’s hard to tell since they weren’t directly compared in studies. But experts say the vaccines are alike on what matters most: preventing hospitalizations and deaths. “Luckily, all these vaccines look like they’re protecting us from severe disease,” said Dr. Monica Gandhi of the University of California, San Francisco, citing study results for five vaccines used around the world and a sixth that’s still in review. And real-world evidence as millions of people receive the vaccines show See VACCINE | Page A3

IHS tackles the Brothers Grimm By VICKIE MOSS The Iola Register
Everyone knows the Brothers Grimm fairy tales can be a little, well, grim. But did you know they can also be hilarious? Iola High School’s drama students tackle all 209 fairy tales in 60 minutes, starting at 7 p.m. tonight and Friday with the play, “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon.” It will be performed at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center, where coronavirus restrictions are required, including wearing masks and social distancing. The play offers a fun romp through tales both familiar and bizarre, with a relatively small cast portraying a very large number of characters. Two narrators serve as your guides through this madcap circus adventure. The versatile Austin Morris, with his gregarious and frenetic energy, leads the audience through twists and turns. The delightful Hannah Andersen plays a sort of “good cop” to his slightly maniacal character, calmly bringing the show back to order. As an audience member, you will be a vital part of the show. You’ll need to provide sound effects, and your enthusiasm is vital to the well-being of at least one

The story starts with a twist to a familiar tale, as the clueless “Girl” played by Macie Hoag sells her soul to not just one but three evil characters: the devil, a troll and an evil enchantress. She promises her unborn daughter in exchange for a prince and gold. We all know that’s not going to turn out well for anyone, but Hoag plays the role with the right amount of naivety and self-centered stupidity. All students take on several roles, giving them multiple opportunities to shine. Eve Ard isn’t your typical fairy tale princess. Or, princesses, as she adopts the roles of Rapunzel, Gretel and Snow

New art is bursting into life on the trails. Isaac Tapia and Rodrigo Alvarez of IT-RA Icons have been hard at work this week on their mural “Serene Flight,” which was selected as part of an online competition. The contest was sponsored by Thrive Allen County, who successfully obtained a grant to fund the project. On Wednesday, Tapia and Alvarez took a break from working to answer questions from the community during a featured artist talk. THE

Things were slow at first, with going door to door, along with doing tons of outreach; and COVID-19 also complicated matters. The hard work paid off, though, for as Tapia noted, “fortunately, this year, there were so many people calling us that we had to quit our jobs. This year we’re going full-time, doing what we love.”

TAPIA and Alvarez also discussed the content of the mural itself, which will prominently feature a historic bridge, meadowlark and butterflies. “We wanted to convey the same mission as [Thrive] has, See ART | Page A6
