Tuesday was a good day to be a challenger for public office in Iola. Several newcomers to the political realm won office in a number of city and school elections, including two Aaron Franklin challengers who beat out incumbents for the Iola City Council. In Iola’s Ward 3, Austin Sigg defeated CouncilAustin Sigg man Eugene Myrick, 103 votes to 86 (54 percent to 46 percent), while challenger Aaron Franklin dispatched incumbent Steven French, 140 votes to 92 (60 percent to 40 percent). “I’m glad the campaigning

A PAIR of contested races also were decided for the USD 257 Board of Education. Iolan Dan Willis defeated Virginia Macha for the board’s at-large seat. Willis received 672 votes to Macha’s 605 (53

LAHARPE — The adage “every vote counts” proved itself once again Tuesday. A single vote (so far) is deciding who will be seated on the LaHarpe Council. Former City Councilman David Lee won one of the seats with 53 votes, while newcomer Danny Ware Jr. received 43 votes. Incumbent Savannah Flory stands at 42 votes. The one-vote margin may change Monday morning when the vote is canvassed, and four provisional ballots are considered. Allen County commissioners ordered a site plan for “possible commercial development” at the site of the old Allen County Hospital. Landworks Studio, Olathe, will lay out how utilities and other prerequisites for development could be done. The decision to contract with Landworks came after a
10-minute executive session Tuesday morning with David Toland, Thrive Allen County executive director, and Bill Maness, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran’s area representative, meeting with commissioners Tom Williams, Jerry Daniels and Jim Talkington, as well as County Counselor Alan Weber. Not all calls have transport Of Allen County ambulance’s 530 runs through the end of March, 58 resulted in crews standing by with no official patient contact, Allen County commissioners found in a review of statistics handed them Tuesday morning. “Sometimes people just need help getting grandma in their car so they can take her to the hospital,” said Iola Fire Chief Tim Thyer. “That’s what we do, help people.”
The statistics also showed of the 407 ambulance transfers, the majority, 245, were to Allen County Regional Hospital.
