Wind farm plans advance
By BOB JOHNSON The Iola Register
Pre-construction components of a wind farm in Allen County are coming together. On Sept. 22 Allen County Planning Commission members will consider zoning changes to accommodate the project. Meanwhile, four towers with gauges attached to their tops are measuring wind velocity and frequency. Those steps were mentioned to commissioners Tom Williams and Jim Talkington Tuesday. The third commissioner, Jerry Daniels, was absent. County Counselor Alan Weber said the wind farm was a topic for planners on Aug. 25. Two landowners attended — one fully in favor, the other gathering information. The planners asked Weber to prepare a document with more comprehensive language for their consideration of zoning changes, including

An unusual aspect of Mike Aronson’s campaign for Allen County sheriff is the support he is receiving as an independent candidate from the Republican Party’s county committee. That the support was initiated before the Aug. 2 primary election bucks political convention even more. Three Republicans, including an incumbent, were on the ballot. Incumbent Bryan Murphy won by a narrow margin over Jared Froggatte, Iola police detective, in the primary. Kelley Zellner, Humboldt resident and chief of police in Conway Springs, was a dis-

Kevin Shaughnessy of Shaughnessy Brothers Construction, Iola, teams with workmate Michael Genoble to pull a window from the football stadium at Riverside Park Tuesday afternoon, part of an ongoing improvement project to the stadium. The removal was a laborious process, requiring Shaughnessy to clear away bits of mortar, grout and other items from the window seal by using a power chisel, as shown at right. The stadium improvements include a new entrance to the home locker room to prevent flooding, a fully refurbished visitors’ locker room, a new roof, and a fresh coat of paint throughout much of the stadium’s core. Pedal power returns for bike festival By RICK DANLEY The Iola Register
If it’s anything like last year, Iola’s historic Riverside Park will surge with ecstatic activity this weekend when Thrive Allen County hosts the second annual Portland Alley Pedalfest. Participants from near and far will gather for bike rides, barbecue, bouncy houses, beer and a night of live music. The event will be an occasion to showcase the area’s topnotch system of recreational trails, which is slowly transforming Allen County into one of the state’s top trails destinations. The bicycle-themed festival begins on Friday with camping and a bike-in outdoor movie. The movie — the canonical ‘80s comedy “The Goonies” (“Hey, you guys!) — will begin at sunset in Riverside Park. Pedalfest participants may camp Friday and Saturday nights in the park, where showers, restrooms, water and free Wi-Fi will be provided. Saturday is the centerpiece

of the three-day festival. Riders will launch themselves out across Allen County’s many miles of trails, which will expose cyclists to the area’s diverse scenery. Pedalfest was designed to accommodate all levels of cycling expertise and offers five route options — 15 miles (“Family Fun Ride”), 20 miles, 50 miles, 75 miles and a 100-mile “century” route. Courses will also introduce riders to some of the distinctive little burgs that make up southeast Kansas. Riders begin on the Southwind Rail Trail, connecting Iola and Humboldt (which is hosting its city-wide garage sale on Saturday). More ambitious routes include the following towns: Chanute (hosting its Mexican Fiesta on that day); Erie (home to the area’s only dinosaur park); Stark (site of the popular Murphy’s Landing B&B); Savonburg (great library!); Elsmore (hosting its annual Elsmore Days on Saturday); Moran (grab a milkshake at Chancey’s); Mildred (home of an award-winning See CYCLISTS | Page A4
