Phase 2 of school funding slated for Sept. By ROXANA HEGEMAN The Associated Press

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court is turning its attention to whether the state is spending enough money overall on its schools, speeding up the timetable for its consideration of the issue. The justices issued a brief order Wednesday setting oral arguments for Sept. 21 and gave the parties until Aug. 12 to file any supplemental writ-

ten arguments. Its scheduling order comes just a week after the Supreme Court signed off on a new education funding law that boosts state aid to poor school districts, ending a threat that the state’s public schools would be shut down. That resolved only a small part of a lawsuit filed in 2010 by four school districts. The phase coming up in September is a much larger part of the case because it deals with whether Kansas is meeting its duty under the state constituSee COURT | Page A5

Buckets of knowledge

Michigan man ventures 700 miles for Melvin run

Caitlin Dreher, a veteran Southwind 4-H member and an intern this summer for the Southwind Extension 4-H District, explains the ins and outs Wednesday of working with bucket calves to four novice 4-H members at the Allen County Fairgrounds. Bucket calves are those which are fed from buckets or bottles — and not from their mothers — until they’re old enough to be weaned. Bucket calves provide ideal conditions for young 4-H’ers to work with animals, Dreher explained. At top, Dreher inspects Josey Ellis’s bucket calf. At left, Carly Kramer tries to hold her animal in position. The 123rd Allen County Fair runs July 29-Aug. 6. REGISTER/RICHARD LUKEN

Runners tend to have a reason for their passion. Some are in it for better physical, or mental, health; others may do it for a charitable cause. Paul Farquhar’s inspiration is a bit different. “I just decided one day I want to complete a race in every state before I die,” the Holland, Mich., runner joked Wednesday. Farquhar will venture more than 700 miles from Michigan to Iola this weekend to partake in the eighth annual Charley Melvin Mad Bomber Run For Your life.

Kansas educators gun for legislative seats By ABIGAIL WILSON KUMW/KHI

To say that many educators in Kansas are fed up with state lawmakers would be an understatement. The Legislature has been putting a tighter and tighter squeeze on public schools in recent years. This election season, educators are trying to send some legislators packing. The Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) estimates that across the state, roughly 50 current and former school board members, administrators and teachers are candidates in legislative elections. In western Kansas, Stafford USD 349 Superintendent Mary Jo Taylor is running for Senate. On the other side of the state in Johnson County, retired special education teacher Vicki Hiatt is vying for a Senate seat, and English teacher Brett Parker hopes to get a seat in the House. South

Many motorists are clogging their car’s engine by not using gasoline with enough added detergents. That’s the conclusion of a study released Thursday by the AAA auto club. Federal rules in place since 1996 require all gasoline to have some enginecleaning additives, but
