Labette braces for cost of murder trial OSWEGO, Kan. (AP) — Officials in a southeast Kansas county are preparing to add about $150,000 to the 2015 budget to cover the likely expenses of a capital murder trial. David C. Bennett Jr. is charged in Labette County with multiple counts in the

killings of Cami Umbarger and her three children in Parsons last Nov. 25. The Parsons Sun reports the Kansas attorney general’s office is prosecuting the case, but Labette County must pay for juror fees, witness travel, jury summonses and printing and mailing jury question-

naires. If the jury is sequestered during the trial, the expenses could be even higher. The County Commission was told at a recent meeting the county’s total costs could reach $350,000 or more, but some of those expenses probably wouldn’t be incurred until 2016.

Don’t forget to vote Tuesday. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Hot rods rev up for Hirschsprung’s disease A gleaming combination of chrome, horsepower, music and marksmanship will fill the Iola area Aug. 16 with the Haunt For Hirschsprung’s Hot Rod Run. The event kicks off at 11 a.m. at the Masonic Lodge parking lot, 213 W. Madison Ave., with registration for a poker run at various area stops, beginning at 1 p.m. The poker run will be a game of skill. Participants will earn their hands by throwing darts at playing cards. A “Show-N-Shine” car show starts at 2 p.m. with several categories open for classic hot rods of all types. Iola Mayor Joel Wicoff will be on hand to present the Mayor’s Choice, starting at 4 p.m. Plaques and prizes will be awarded at 6:15. Meanwhile, the gleaming beauties will migrate to the courthouse square from 5 to

7 p.m. Several vendors will be on hand, while drawings and a silent auction are in the works. T-N-T DJ Service will be there for musical accompaniment. The event will be broadcast live on 97.7 KSNP FM Radio. Proceeds will go to Haunt For Hirschsprung’s. For more information, call (620) 380-1212 or (620) 363-1742. Hirschsprung’s disease is a genetic disease in which a person is born without necessary nerve cells or muscles in part of the infant’s colon. A newborn with Hirschsprung’s is typically unable to have a bowel movement in the first few days after birth. In some cases, the condition may not be detected until later in childhood. Hirschsprung’s is treated with surgery to bypass or remove the diseased part of the colon.
