TLC Garden Center offers a wide variety of garden and landscape plants, seeds and supplies. In the spring, the greenhouses are full of colorful bedding plants and hanging baskets and with TLC’s great selection of vegetable plants, you’re bound to find the variety you love. They also have a unique gift shop with a collection of pottery, windchimes, statuary and fountains sure to inspire any garden enthusiast.

TLC also carries a great mixture of trees and shrubs for all your landscape needs. The staff at TLC provides professional, quality landscape design and installation. Year round landscape bed maintenance, including leaf cleanup, pruning and weed removal, will make your yard the envy of the neighborhood. TLC also carries bulk top soil, mulch and decorative rock, available for pickup or delivery.

Seasonal fall items include fall garden vegetables, bulbs, mums, pansies, straw bales, pumpkins and other fall dĂŠcor.

TLC has an exciting assortment of new Christmas ornaments and decorations and will continue to carry fresh-cut Christmas trees, wreaths, Christmas cactus and much more. Christmas trees arrive Thanksgiving week.

TLC is open year round, with fall and winter hours being Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m and with extended hours in the spring and summer.

Flory’s Flowers inside TLC Garden Center in LaHarpe opened in August of this year. It is a natural addition to the garden center and landscape business already on site. Savannah Flory had been tossing around the ideas of eventually adding a flower shop for a few years, but had not planned on it happening so soon. When another local florist closed shop, the owner approached Flory with an opportunity to buy their inventory. It has been a whirlwind ever since.

Currently, the shop is located in a small room in the TLC building, but the Florys are planning on remodeling this winter to provide a larger work space and an additional walk-in cooler. The remodel will also provide a space for wedding and funeral consultations and will help open up the floor plan of the current shop.

Flory’s Flowers offers fresh arrangements, sympathy flowers, balloon bouquets and gift items. Delivery is available to all towns in Allen County, including Iola, LaHarpe, Humboldt, and Moran, as well as Chanute, Garnett, Yates Center and other surrounding towns. Duane and Judy McGraw opened Duane’s Flowers on the north side of the square in 1976. Duane’s moved to their current location in 1981. They carry a large selection of fresh flowers, green and blooming plants, silk flowers, greeting cards and balloons.

Their youngest daughter Connie is married to Brad Lee Ochs and they are working together in his Farmers Insurance office in Lawrence. Their son JD is living in Iola with his wife, Candace Shaw McRae. JD works for Gates Manufacturing and Candace is employeed by the Bowlus Fine Arts Center. They have a daughter, Ella Jayne, born January 28, 2012.

Annette Womack, pictured on left, has served as office manager since March 1993. Annette is a lifelong resident of Iola and a past City Commissioner. Her husband, Steve, is a Lieutenant on the Iola Police Department. They have two sons, Shane and Heath, his wife Samantha and grandson, Nathan.

Paula Sutherland, pictured on right, has been with their office since February 2008. Her husband, Richard, has farmed in Allen County for many years. Paula worked at Hawk Travel for 12 years prior to coming to work for John. She also was a member of the USD 257 Board of Education for 8 years. Lone Pine Hunting Preserve Celebrating 35 Years of Great Hunting!

Lone Pine hunting is open for another season of rewarding days in the field with family, friends and bird dogs. The welcome rains of August have improved the cover here at the farm so it is in excellent shape, and as always, the pheasant, chukar and quail are ready for harvest.

Lone Pine Hunting Preserve is owned by Mike and Beth Hamman, pictured. Located 10 miles west of Yates Center, the hunting preserve provides many opportunities to hunt — upland hunting for pheasant, quail and chukar; turkey hunting in season and deer hunting in season. The upland season runs from September 1 through March 31. There are no bag limits, hunters pay for the birds they want to have released and the harvested birds are dressed and packaged free of charge. No membership fees or any other charges. Rifle season for deer begins in December and turkey season is in the spring. Group field hunt packages and European pheasant harvests are also available.

Works of Art studio/gallery opened its doors in October of 2011. Co-owned by Joe and Janie Works, the gallery is located on the east side of Humboldt’s historic square & shows a permanent collection of art by area award winning artist Wes Dewey. Dewey also has a working studio inside the gallery where he can often be found painting. Dewey is known for his waterfowl, which has placed him in the top ten of the Federal Duck Stamp competition and won him the Kansas Duck Stamp competition and the Louisiana Duck stamp competition. Besides waterfowl, he also paints songbirds, animals, landscapes and still-life. Dewey recently placed “Best of Show,� in the Richeson 150 International Art Competition in the Landscape category with his oil painting, “January Rains on the Tall grass.� The gallery also offers a selection of originals, lithograph, paper and canvas GiClee prints available for purchase.

Dirk Sorenson, Yates Center, is also featured in the gallery with his unique raku pottery along with handmade furniture created by Randy Hill of Humboldt.

Each month the gallery showcases a “Featured Artist,� whose art will be on display through the month. A “Meet the Artist� reception is also held around the first Saturday of the month so that the public can meet the artists and see their work. Art demonstrations by the featured artist are often done during the receptions.

The Frame Shop is a new addition to the Works of Art, housed next door at 107 S. 9th in Terry’s, we can now offer custom framing.

Works of Art is open Tuesday-Thursday from 11am-5pm and Friday & Saturday from 11am- 6pm. Jan Knewtson opened Sophisticated Rose in 1995 on the south side of the Iola Square. In 1997, she moved to her present location on the corner of Jefferson and Madison streets.

SEK Multi County Health Department The SEK Multi County Health Department was established in 1972. Its health departments are in Allen, Anderson, Bourbon and Woodson counties. SEK Multi County employs a Chief Nursing Officer/RN, Chief Financial Officer, four additional county RNs, four administrative assistants, four Healthy Start Home Visitors, one WIC Registered Dietician and two pro-bono Co-Medical Directors. It is governed by the SEK Multi County Board of Health, which consists of commissioners, providers and consumers from each of its four counties.

Trial and Error was a good name for their business when they started it in 1973. The first pallet was nailed together in the garage of owners Jerry and Carolyn Haen for Walton Foundry 40 years ago. They knew nothing about the business and had to feel their way along. That’s how they came up with the name of the firm.

The company occupies a huge concrete and sheet metal building on the former Lehigh Cement Plant site that Iola Industries, Inc. bought when Lehigh ceased operations. The building had been used for clinker storage. Today it is full of completed pallets, crates, cable reels and the T&E crew busy filling orders for the industries in Iola which provide the base for its production as well as other companies throughout Southeast Kansas.

“T&E owes its existence to the industries of Iola,” Haen said. “We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Iola Industries, a special thanks to them for all their help in giving us an opportunity to succeed.”

A good part of our business and sales is driven by service. Our normal trade area is basically a 20-mile radius around Iola. We repair all major brands under warranty and out of warranty regardless of where or when they were purchased.

El Jimador Mario de Loera, Gerardo Gonzalez and Marco Macias followed their American dream and opened El Jimador Mexican Restaurant on October 10, 2013. El Jimador translates as a farmer who harvests agave.

Chancy’s – Kirk’s Grill & Shake

The Funkie Monkey

Kirk Dwyer bought the restaurant in Moran, at the junction of U.S. 54 & 59 highways, in September of 1992 and renamed it Chancy’s Grill & Shake. At that time he felt like he was doing just that, “taking a chance.”

Chancy’s offers a wide variety of sandwiches and side orders plus delicious homemade pies made by Natha Lillard. A couple years ago they added the always fresh chef salads - different varieties - different sizes!

Menu items include the popular chicken fried steak sandwich and/or dinner, and also the really good hickory burger, shrimp dinner and taco salads. Great hot lunch specials are available Monday through Friday. For the hungry man, we have the Jackman Burger, it will fill you up. As always our soft serve ice cream, sundaes, malts and shakes are the greatest!

Come by and play a game of pool.

Chancy’s is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Six years ago, Teresa Ross began hand beading jewelry as a hobby and rented a booth at Brooklyn Park, then added handbags and jewelry. She added a second booth at The Market Place. She also began having monthly sales events in the basement of her home with clothing she ordered from wholesale suppliers. After her job was eliminated and not knowing where her employment was headed next, she brought in all her inventory from her booths and basement to a location just off the square.

Funkie Monkey Bling opened for business Farm City Days weekend 2012 just to sell some of this inventory. She decided to rent the building for the remainder of the year, opening in the afternoons and Saturdays. Sales & customers kept increasing and Teresa decided this would be her next full time job.

Funkie Monkey Bling offers fun, affordable clothing in sizes from small to 3X and accessories, with 75% of their stock under $25, including dresses, shorts, capris, jeans, tops, shoes and jewelry!

In March 2013, Funkie Monkey switched locations with ACARF’s Second Chance store and is now located on the north east corner of the square. The switch added more floor space and the ability to add top notch vendors to the store showcasing their handbags, graphic tees, tutus, tween accessories, women’s camo, pottery, household items and much more.

Recently they added another room called The Junque Monkey which includes primitives, antiques and funky finds.

It also includes refurbished and hand built furnishings and furniture made and painted by Teresa and her husband Toby.

Also added is a Worth Repeating Resale Boutique, a small room of gently worn clothing.

Teresa says retail is not something she wanted to get back into but is now glad she did. “I have a fun job where I can create and express my artistic side.”

Founded in 1955, King’s Sandwich Shop has established a long-standing tradition of great food complimented by a fun atmosphere that showcases the greats of Rock-N-Roll history.

The name and standards established over 50 years ago are still being used today. King’s Sandwich Shop is a true family-owned and operated business and has been since the day it opened.

Family members that have taken orders, prepped food, and added to the history through the years include Harley and Jackie, Clara Dannels, Doris Bishop, Scott King, Susie Call, Kyle and Cara King, Kelli King, Ashley Wilson, Lexi King and Kale King. As with any precious family heirloom, the business has been handed down from generation to generation wrapped in pride and tied with traditions.

The current owner Kyle King, (grandson of Harley and Jackie and Doris Bishop, great-grandson of Clara, son of Scott and Susie, brother of Kelli, father of Ashley, Lexi, and Kale & husband of Cara) continues to work from the same code of ethics and standards, allowing him to boast “The Best Burgers in Iola” always made just the way you like. The great taste doesn’t end there! King’s Sandwich Shop also offers the one-of-a-kind Pizza Burger, shrimp, fried green beans, chicken, chili, mushrooms, cauliflower and okra.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Leon and Mary Weber have lived all their lives in Woodson County and have been married 35 years raising three children – Annette, Benjamin and Rebecca. Leon started with Pioneer in 1990 selling in Woodson County and in the 23 years has built their business to also include Allen, Neosho and Wilson Counties. They went from just selling seed to being a full service seed rep for Pioneer Seed.

In 2008, Gary and Kelli Beggs with Elsmore Feed Store in Elsmore, joined as associates working in the southeast portion of Allen County.

In 2010, Benjamin and Megan Weber joined the business and they were able to add PHI crop insurance and Meridian seed tenders dealership to their business.

They now have a total of 8 bins for bulk beans at their two locations, seed treatment systems at each location for treating soybeans and wheat, full service wagons for delivery and loan out seed wagons for our customers to use. They also run a weigh wagon during harvest to check on yield. They are planning to put up two more bins in 2014 and have more of a variety of wheat seed for next season.

Weber seed service carries Pioneer seed including corn, soybeans, sorghum and sunflowers; Meridian seed tenders, PHI crop insurance, seed wheat. They can also deliver bulk & bag seed to their customers, treat soybeans and wheat, agronomy and do farm mapping.

The Growing Place Childcare & Preschool

The Growing Place Childcare is a not-for-profit facility that opened in 2006. We are state licensed for 82 and DCF (Department for Children and Families) approved. We are open from 6 am to 6 pm.

Our staff strives to assist families in providing a childhood for their children from the time they are a few months old to twelve years of age. You will not find children propped in front of a television set here. All the staff are interacting with language, art, math, music and movement activities.

In addition to childcare, Mrs. Glenda Johnson teaches preschoolers that are three or four years of age in a rich academic atmosphere.

Our before and after school program serves breakfast and transports children to and from school with help on homework afterwards. The summer school age program incorporates swimming at the public pool, library time, cooking classes, gardening and weekly field trips.

The Growing Place employs 14 full-time and six part-time happy people. Tina Cady-Friend is the director, Sara Lott is the office manager and Janie Works is the administrator.

The Neuromuscular Center, located at 108 S. Washington, is owned and operated by Cathy Stahl, massage therapist. Cathy received her certification from the Colorado Institute for Massage Therapy in 1983 and continued her education specializing in Neuromuscular Therapy — the St. John method which is the clinical treatment of specific massage therapy that addresses the cause of soft tissue pain and its relationship to the brain, spine and nerves.

Typically, results are felt in 1 to 4 sessions.

Her experience includes working with athletes from the U.S. Olympic Training Center. She traveled with the U.S. Ski team and the World Rugby Cup in Europe in 1991.
