A rts in Education Series

Reading, writing and arithmetic are not the only things Allen County students will be learning about this year.

Most people of the area are aware of our outstanding Bowlus Cultural Attraction series, but many may not know of the multitude of programs we do for area students. One of my favorite roles is the work my staff and I do with the children of Allen County.

I attend many conferences and work with art groups across Kansas and I can honestly say I do not know of any other facility in Kansas that has the wonderful professional children’s artsin-education series like the Bowlus does. The Bowlus has funding support through the Sleeper Family Trust.

All of our programs are totally free to the three school districts in Allen County ­— Humboldt, Iola and Moran — and when space remains in the auditorium, we open our doors to schools in Colony, Uniontown and Yates Center, to share the experience of live theater.

This year we will be hosting numerous professional theatrical plays, programs, workshops and clinics both in the Bowlus and in the schools for area students. Elementary children all across Allen County will enjoy a visit from a professional storyteller when he visits each

of their schools in October.

Allen Community College and Iola High School students will have the opportunity to learn improvisation from professionals in OcSusan Raines tober when the Story Pirates conduct two workshops. Art students from Iola High School will attend a three-day workshop taught by the nationally acclaimed Presidio Brass during their concert in January.

Other workshops and clinics will be during the school year as fine arts teachers determine who they wish to bring into their classrooms to expand their students’ learning. And finally, four professional theater performances from September to February will be for children enrolled in area middle and elementary schools. If your child is home-schooled and you wish to have them attend with an adult, please contact the Bowlus office and speak with the staff about arranging seating for your child.

I am very proud of the Bowlus Arts-in-Education series. It is a major part of the Bowlus’ mission and we hope to continue to provide the highest quality of professional arts programs for the students of our community.

Sonic Escape When: April 5, 7 p.m.

Where: Creitz Recital Hall, general public

Sonic Escape is a fluteviolin-cello trio. The trio is made up of Juilliard graduates, Maria Millar (violin), Shawn Wyckoff (flute), Nan-Cheng Chen (cello). They have played in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

The group plays a variety of music and interacts with their audience.

Keaton Celebration is 21st The legendary work of Buster Keaton will take over Iola next month.

The 21st Annual Buster Keaton Celebration will be Sept.

27 and 28. This year’s fest will feature Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and the “Fabulous Fifties.”

Friday events are from 1 to 10 p.m. and Saturday will be from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Feature showings will be in the Bowlus auditorium and open to the general public.

The festival is supported with funds from the Kansas Humanities Council, The Clopton Family Trust and the City of Iola Convention and Tourism Grant.

Actor Paul Dooley will attend the festival as a special

guest with his wife Winnie Holzman.

Dooley was co-creator and head writer of “The Electric Company” series.

He has been on Broadway and has been in numerous movies.

Some include “ B r e a k i n g Paul Dooley Away,” “Sixteen Candles,” “Runaway Bride,” and “Cars.”

Holzman created the television series “My So-Called Life” on ABC. She also wrote the book “Wicked” which was later adapted into the award win-

ning Broadway musical.

The Bowlus will show Keaton’s work of the 1950s.

In 1950, Keaton had “The Buster Keaton Show,” and appeared on the silver screen mul- Winnie Holzman tiple times.

He also appeared in Charlie Chaplin’s “Limelight” in 1952 in a comedy routine.

As always, the festival is free to the general public.

More information on when doors open for the movie showings will be released closer to the festival time.

Ring of Fire The Music of Johnny Cash When: Oct. 26, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Bowlus Auditorium A company of performers bring audience members into legendary Johnny Cash’s life and music in the performance “Ring of Fire.” The event by Troupe America features more than 35 songs. Some songs performed are “I Walk the Line,” “A Boy Named Sue,” and “Jackson.”

The event is created by Richard Maltby, Jr. and conceived by William Meade with orchestrations by Steven Bishop and Jeff Lisenby.

“Ring of Fire, The Music of Johnny Cash” is sponsored by the Stephenson Trust.

Nebraska Theatre Caravan A Christmas Carol When: Nov. 23, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Bowlus Auditorium The Nebraska Theatre Caravan will bring Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” to the Bowlus stage in November. Christmas carols are included into this classic tale. John Bennett takes the traditional carols and makes contemporary musical arrangements.

Presidio Brass Sounds of Cinema When: Jan. 23, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Bowlus Auditorium Presidio Brass is a brass quintet that combines piano and percussion instruments for musical arrangements.

The quintet is made up of Timothy J. Tesh (trumpet), Steve O’Connor (trumpet), Mike McCoy (horn), Sean Reusch (trombone), and Scott Sutherland (tubist, pianist).

They have performed with major symphony orchestras, toured the nation and released three recordings. They play an assortment of jazz, holiday music, and popular hits.

This event is underwritten by the Whitehead Trust.

Montana Repertory Theatre The Miracle Worker When: Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Bowlus Auditorium “The Miracle Worker” by William Gibson tells the story of Helen Keller and her tutor Anne Sullivan.

Helen Keller, who was deaf and blind since infancy, learns life lessons from Sullivan who became blind from untreated trachoma.

“Expression: The Work of Diane Dobson Barton”

When: Sept. 6 - Oct. 16 Where: Mary L. Martin Art Gallery Jessie Montes will have his artwork on display at the Mary L. Martin Art Gallery from Sept. 6 to Oct. 16. On Sept. 6 there will be a reception at 6 p.m. in the gallery.

Montes is a Garden City native.

Cramer was a Houston-based artist. He passed away in 2010. He was known as a portrait/landscape artist. During his career as an artist he was chosen by the Texas Senate to paint Barbara Jordan. He also did a portrait of President George W. Bush.

Where: Bowlus Auditorium The Isaacs are a family group who sing bluegrass, folk, country, Southern gospel and rhythm and blues. They have performed at the Grand Ole Opry and in many countries.

Brian Free and Assurance is a Southern gospel singing group. The four-member group formed in 1982. They have earned multiple awards and appeared on many television shows.

Tribute Quartet also performs gospel music. The male members will take the Bowlus stage and entertain the audience with their harmonized ensemble.

The Hoppers When: March 8, 6 p.m.

Where: Bowlus Auditorium

The Hoppers are a fivemember singing group that performs gospel music. The group came together in 1957 and have been entertaining ever since. They are known as America’s favorite family of gospel music.

The Taylors are a brother/ sister quartet. The group performs about 200 dates a year. They formed their group in 2006 and have won multiple awards.

Another family singing group, The Browns, will perform on the same night at the Bowlus.

The Browns tour across the United States and entertain crowds with gospel music.
