The following stories cover how parents of young children can obtain free books and preschool services. They’ll also learn what immunizations are required, and what kind of services are provided to keep children healthy both physically and mentally.

The Gift of Reading AS

a child, Clarissa Thompson struggled to read. School wasn’t easy, and she needed an Individualized Education Plan.

When she became a mother, she was determined to give her children every possible advantage when it came to learning how to read. She started reading to them while she was pregnant, hoping they would hear and recognize the patterns and sounds of words even in the womb.

Thompson didn’t hesitate to sign up for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library as soon as she learned about it from a Head Start educator who works with the family. The online process took about two minutes, she said, and required only her name and address, and the names and ages of her children.

In March, the family started receiving four books each month in the mail — a different book for each child, based on age.

“Reading books to your children is very important,” Thompson said. “They learn from it, even just looking at the pictures, and they let their imagination go. Sometimes when we get to the end of a book, my oldest says, ‘It’s not over yet. Here’s what happens next.’”

The books typically come at the beginning of the month. They don’t come all at once, and the children never know who will be the recipient until they check the mail.

That has made checking the mail quite an exciting event, Thompson said.

“They’ll race to see which one gets it, and they’ll surround that person,” Thompson said.

The family now has 16 more books to add to their library.

“There’s no way we could have afforded that many books in four months,” Thompson said.

THE DOLLY Parton Imagination Library provides free books to any child age birth to 5 in Allen County. A new book is delivered every month.

The program is sponsored locally by the Iola Rotary Club and Talk, Read, Play Allen County, in collaboration with numerous local agencies.

The Imagination Library selects books that have literary and educational value as well as being entertaining and ageappropriate. Many are classics, such as “Corduroy” by Don Freeman, “Good Night Gorilla” by Peggy Rathmann and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. The list changes every year, so a younger child will receive a different book than their older siblings did at the same age. That way, families receive a greater variety of books.

Families don’t get to choose which books they receive.

Organizers estimate 685 children in Allen County could benefit from the program.

Currently 215 are enrolled.

She and her husband have four children — Sophia Simpson, 4; Victoria “Brielle”

Johnson, 3; Sharlene Simpson, 3; and Riddick Johnson, 2.

Their favorite books are instructional books.

They like to count each leaf in counting books, and match letters to pictures, such as “A” for apple. They also like books about emotions, especially one called “A Father’s Love.” Her children are very close to their stepfather, and the book has special meaning to them because of that relationship.

All of the books have been well-loved by the children, Thompson said.

“I’m really thankful for this program.”

INFORMATION about the program is available through the Iola Rotary Club and its members, as well as the Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department, Allen County Regional Hospital, local doctors’ offices, and preschools and child care centers.

The Imagination Library began in 1995 through the Dollywood Foundation in Dolly Parton’s hometown of Sevier County, Tenn.

A national program followed in 2000. By 2003, the Imagination Library had mailed 1 million books. By 2016, it was sending 1 million books each month.

The state of Tennessee offered coverage to all young children in the state beginning in 2004. Other states have followed suit, with Kansas at one point offering a limited version of the program, which has since been scaled back.

for little kids. They’re strict like a teacher, but give hugs like a parent.

They are there to teach, but also set aside lots of time for play. And while they may have goals, they keep their expectations to themselves.

It’s those hidden talents that make a teacher not just good, but special. And it’s a recipe for making kids good learners.

In Allen County, education has taken a huge leap forward in the last several years by making preschool available to most children.

In Iola, a certified preschool education is now available at no cost to all 3- and 4-year olds.

In Humboldt, funding has been secured to provide free programming for 25 students age 4. In Moran, the program is free for all 4-year-olds. Last year’s program enrolled 18.

The value of these programs is inestimable. Because they follow state

standards, the programs help prepare little ones for kindergarten so that all the children by then know their letters and numbers, can write their names, and have reached emotional markers that assure them and their parents they are prepared.

All kids love to learn. But not in the same way, which is why professionals are the best way to reach all children.

“Our job is to help kids find the best way to learn for them,” said Tina CadyFriend, director of The Growing Place in Humboldt.

Perhaps that means writing numbers and their names in sand or salt trays.

“Some kids learn better through sensory activities,” she said.

“We try not to use a lot of worksheets.

Sometimes parents don’t always believe their children are learning without that concrete evidence, but they are,” she said.

To an outsider, preschool may not look like there’s much learning going on.

“When you walk into any of their rooms, you find kids dancing, singing, drawing, cutting and playing. Preschool is a very lively learning atmosphere!” said Jenna Higginbotham, curriculum director of USD 257’s preschool program, and Briana Curry, who wrote the grant for Iola’s program. The two answered questions posted to them via email.

It’s through such activities that children become socially, emotionally and academically prepared for success.

“Our ultimate goal is to instill a love for learning,” said Curry and Higginbotham.

The 2019-2020 school year was the first year that Iola’s program was made available to all 4-year-olds, courtesy of a Kansas Preschool Pilot grant.

The women said they appreciate the significant savings these grants mean to area families.

In Allen County, a typical preschool costs in excess of $5,000 a year.

“To be able to serve every family in Iola — regardless of their income — feels wonderful” The Iola preschool program reached 60 children for the most recent school year. For this coming year, organizers are expecting just as many 3-year-olds.

To help accommodate the increased numbers for 2019-2020, five teachers and paraprofessionals were on staff in not only McKinley Elementary but also at two private daycares, Munchkinland and More and Ready Set, Learn Preschool.

The Iola program places children from all backgrounds together.

“Some of these students were funded through the KPP grant, some from an At-Risk Grant, and some were ANW Cooperative students,” said Higginbotham and Curry. “We have put a heavy focus on collaborating between all five classrooms and merging the classrooms. It doesn’t matter which funding source is providing preschool for the student. What matters is that all 4-year-olds in the Iola school district had access to preschool.”

Because USD 257 provides transportation for the preschool programs, children in licensed daycares are transported to the morning or afternoon preschools at no cost.

“It’s a huge bonus for working parents,” they said.

The transportation service also comes in handy for field trips or to see performances at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.

In Humboldt, The Growing Place has 15 slots for 3- and 4-year-olds paid for through an Early Childhood Block Grant. The program had 39 students between two classrooms this most recent school year. Another 10 students attend preschool at Humboldt Elementary School. The program there is for 4-yearolds. Staci Hudlin serves as the director for the program at HES which is geared primarily for at-risk students.

As proof of their success, all but one entering kindergartner for the 2019-20 school year had received a preschool education, Cady-Friend said.

The Growing Place’s curriculum is based on Kansas Early Learning Standards, Cady-Friend said, with a heavy Montessori influence.

Activities often include “chores,” such as learning how to fold napkins, help set the table, children serving themselves at mealtime and cleaning up after meals.

“Most parents are surprised what their

kids are able to do,” Cady-Friend said. The advantage of preschool is that they have all the time in the world to teach such tasks.

In a visit to one such class, this reporter witnessed a child pouring herself a glass of milk and another scraping her plate into a scrap tray.

The school also has a garden where children help take care of the plants.

“Our motto is don’t do anything for a child that they can do for themselves,” Cady-Friend said.

Teaching children to work and play together also instills a sense of compassion for others, she said. “They learn they are not just in their own little word, but there’s a big world out there. Dealing with conflicts among their peers is a whole different realm than between siblings.”

All the schools place a heavy emphasis on literacy.

In Iola, the preschoolers visit Iola Public Library every week.

“They are always excited for their library day,” said Higginbotham and Curry. “They love being able to check out their very own books from the library. It’s a wonderful way to foster the love of reading.”

Cady-Friend said they encourage children to tell them what they think the message of picture books are.

“It’s so awesome to hear a child tell a whole elaborate story simply from pictures,” she said.

For many working families, parents are torn by the amount of time their children spend out of their care.

“For some, it’s heart-wrenching,” said Cady-Friend. “But they should know our philosophy is to love each child no matter what, and that we are an extended family,” she said.

The more places a child receives love and positive reinforcement — their homes, schools, places of worship, the homes of friends — the more trusting they will be of society in general.

Is my kid ready?

The state sets Sept. 1 as the official birthday cutoff date. If a child

is 5 on or after Sept. 1, they are eligible to start kindergarten.

But not all children mature at the same rate. A child who turns 5 in

late August may need another year before beginning school, while

others have enough maturity and skills to start school immediately.

While many children will be eager to start school, others may not

be quite as emotionally mature or prepared for such a major life change.

Parents may wonder whether to send a child to kindergarten, or

wait another year. Later, they may wonder whether to allow a child to progress to the next grade level, or repeat a grade.

Heather Wools, a kindergarten teacher at McKinley Elementary

School, said educators can help guide parents.

The first step is to attend a kindergarten screening.

“The teachers will let you know if they feel your child isn’t ready,”

she said. “Also, do they know (at least most of) their colors, shapes,

ABCs? Can they count to 10 and higher? Are they potty-trained? Did they attend Pre-K?”

A child’s age is also a good indicator of whether he or she is ready

to start school.

Wools recommends that children who are close to the cutoff date

consider waiting a year, especially if parents are concerned the child might be a little less mature than his peers.

If a teacher suggests a child repeat a grade level, there’s probably

a good reason for that, Wools said.

“Teachers don’t want your child to be behind” There are pros and cons to retention, though.

Children may be confused about why they can’t move on to the

next grade level with their friends. They may develop problems with self-esteem and worry they aren’t smart or capable. They may miss their friends and could struggle to meet new ones.

But younger children, especially, adapt easier to such changes.

They may not even realize they are being “held back,” Wools said.

Retention “allows your child to mature more and the chance to

possibly excel at a subject, rather than struggle forever,” Wools said.

efore students start school, they must have a record of immunizations on file, as well as any type of physical required to participate in sports activities.

Each of the three districts in Allen County follow the same guidelines regarding requirements for immunizations and athletic physicals. They also have similar policies regarding distribution of medications, both prescription and nonprescription.

Kansas law requires a series of immunizations, given at specific times, before a student can enter the public school system.

Some exemptions can be made for a physical condition, as documented by a physician, where immunizations would endanger the child’s life; or for religious reasons.

Here’s your guide to immunizations in your community:

USD 257 — Iola, Gas and LaHarpe

The district’s health services include medication administration, immunization audits, communicable disease control, follow-up of chronic absenteeism, coordination of school physicals and health screenings, promotion of a safe school environment and health/wellness education.

The district also partners with SEK Mental Health System to offer counseling services.

The district will dispense medication as needed, according to a policy. Prescription medication requires written permission from the prescribing physician. Medication must be in its original pharmacy bottle.

Most pharmacies will provide an extra empty bottle for this purpose.

The Humboldt district requires current immunizations/physical and information pertaining to medications or special needs a child might have. The 504 Plan is the medical equivalent of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

The

first day of school signifies the start of a new adventure for students. It’s a time to meet a new teacher and new friends, maybe even start at a new school.

But for some children, the first day of school can also be filled with anxiety. It’s a separation from parents and the safety of home, full of unknowns.

A little bit of preparedness at home and advice from local educators can make that first day go smoothly.

Any student who is attending a new school should visit the facility before the first day. Most schools will allow students to tour the building and meet the staff. For older students attending a new school, the principal might be willing to find a current student who can welcome the new student and help them get through the day.

And for parents, especially those of young students such as kindergartners, it’s important to let go and don’t look back, according to Kim Ensminger, superintendent of Marmaton Valley schools.

“I can tell you from personal experience, even though it hurts your heart, don’t linger. Just turn and go. We will take care of your little one,” she said.

The first day of school was difficult for her son, who cried all the way to school and had to be carried into the building.

His new teacher took him by the hand and off they went.

Within a couple of days, the boy was eager to go to school.

“They adapt pretty quickly,” Ensminger said. “We have really good teachers at that level. We’ll help you separate at the door.”

Heather Wools, a kindergarten teacher at McKinley Elementary School in Iola, has helped many families through that first day of school.

“Give your child a good hug and kiss, reassure him/her that you will be back, then leave them with their teachers,” she suggested.

“They will calm down, and they will learn that they are safe and that you will be back.”

It’s important to develop a routine and practice it starting a couple weeks before school starts, Wools said.

“Remind your young child of the new routine. Get plenty of sleep. Practice getting up and going to bed at the new times,” Wools suggested.

Darcie Croisant, counselor at Humboldt Middle School, and Misti Czarnowsky, Humboldt Elementary School counselor, also offered tips for establishing a new routine. Keep it simple but consistent, they said.

“Routines are important to children. They establish normalcy and a sense of security,” the counselors said in a joint report.

They suggested families establish a bedtime and stick to it; unplug from social media; plan ahead such as picking out clothes the night before; and create a morning schedule.

Routines also can ease separation anxiety, Croisant and Czarnowsky said. Children will find reassurance through the repetition and will feel less anxious over time. Reinforce positive feelings about going to school, not fears, they said.

Sometimes when separation anxiety is high, a tangible object can be helpful in reassuring your child that you aren’t far away, she said. The object can be as simple as a small family picture, a small note that can be kept in the child’s pocket, or possibly a special object that belongs to the parent.

Other suggestions include getting plenty of time outside or getting exercise; reading books together or allowing the child to read books independently that are interesting to them.

Parental attitudes play a huge role in a child’s success at school, Ensminger said.

“Education is a team effort. Between home and school, we have to be positive from both angles so we can help a student be the best they can potentially be.”

Handwashing + masks among fall guidelines for Kansas schools As of this writing, we know K-12 schools will not open until after Labor Day. Gov. Laura Kelly called for the postponement in response to the state’s stillescalating cases of the COVID-19 virus.

Kansas Board of Education members unanimously agreed with Kelly’s call.

School districts will implement their reopening plans based on recommendations and mandates set forth by the Kansas Department of Education.

With the goal to reopen schools safely, guidelines call for teachers and staff to wear face masks while inside schools and to suggest students in middle school and high school do the same.

According to Dr. Steve Stites, chief medical officer of the University of Kansas Health System, middle and high school students are more likely to spread the virus than elementary school students.

The virus’s spread is checked with

wearing face masks, social distancing and frequent hand-washing, Stites said.

Schools are advised to instill handwashing on an hourly basis and to take the temperatures of staff and faculty daily.

All students will be observed daily for any signs of illness. Visitors will be limited.

It is expected many schools will implement a hybrid of in-class and online instruction to allow for social distancing.

More than 519,000 children are enrolled in the state’s public schools.

hildren learn better when they have a healthy diet, according to Judy Baker, food services coordinator for USD 257.

“Breakfast fuels learning. Kids and teens can concentrate on school work better when they are not hungry, and studies show kids do better in school when they eat breakfast,” Baker said.

School meals provide adequate nutrition for children. It’s also more convenient and possibly cheaper for children to eat meals at school, Baker said.

Parents may not have the time or finances to prepare a healthy breakfast or lunch.

“The average cost of our meal is $2.90,” Baker said. “It’s hard to make lunch for that.”

Area schools provide breakfast and lunch to students every day.

Those meals may be prepared in different ways and cost different amounts in different districts, but they are required to meet certain nutritional guidelines.

Families who can’t afford full-priced meals may qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

Applications are available at all school districts. Though the typical practice is for families to fill out an application during enrollment, such applications actually can be made at any point during the school year. If a family doesn’t qualify at the beginning of the year but the financial situation changes, such as a job loss, the family can apply again.

On the flip side, once a family is approved for free or reduced meals, they do not need to report any income changes until the next school year begins.

“It doesn’t matter if they win the lottery halfway through the school year,” Baker said.

The COVID-19 pandemic could affect how schools serve meals. During the spring, when school buildings were closed and students stayed home for learning, districts provided meals similar to the summer lunch and breakfast

Following are summaries of how each district’s meals program operates, assuming they will return to business as usual in the fall.

USD 257 - Iola

About half of the students in USD 257 typically eat school lunch. A little less than that will eat breakfast.

The cost of lunches at the high school is $3.10, middle school $2.90 and elementary $2.90. Breakfast is $2.10.

Reduced-price breakfast is 30 cents and reduced price lunch is 40 cents.

About 52% of USD 257 students receive free or reduced-price meals.

The Iola school district contracts its meals through Opaa!, a food management company with headquarters in Missouri that serves about two-thirds of Missouri and Kansas school districts.

Opaa!’s dietitians write menus for schools to follow to make sure each meal meets the required nutritional value. The USDA’s guidelines can be quite strict, Baker said.

Except for Baker, all of the district’s food service employees, such as cooks, are Opaa! employees. Baker works as the district’s liaison with Opaa! and also is responsible for managing the “free and reduced” meal program.

“Really, Opaa! has come up with some pretty good recipes. They use spices to replace salt,” Baker said. “The food is good, nutritional food.”

But the district’s current cafeteria set-up can take a toll on the quality of the food, Baker admits.

The high school cafeteria staff provide all the main entrees for the high school and three elementary schools. Each of the elementary schools has a small kitchen to make things like side dishes and salads. The middle school prepares most of its own meals.

That means much of the food must be transported to the elementary schools, and it may sit in a hot box for up to an hour.

“It loses quality when it sits there,” Baker acknowledged. “There’s not much we can do about that until we get an elementary kitchen.”

The pending construction of a new elementary school, slated to open in the fall of 2021, will include a new kitchen and cafeteria, alleviating that problem.

It’s also possible that the elementary school’s new cafeteria and commons area will allow the district to offer elementary students the option of a “Grab and Go” late breakfast option. That has not yet been determined, though.

GRAB AND GO breakfast is offered to Iola’s middle and high school students.

“It’s a second-chance breakfast,” Baker said. “Mornings can be busy for families, or sometimes kids just aren’t ready to eat at 7:30 a.m.”

The Grab and Go breakfast takes place during passing periods later in the morning, and offers easy-to-eat breakfast items like fruit, sausage/pancake on a stick, cereal and milk or juice.

Students are charged for the Grab and Go breakfast just like the earlier breakfast, including those who receive free and reduced-price breakfast. But if someone eats the earlier breakfast and wants to take advantage of the Grab and Go, they’ll need to pay full price for the second meal.

That includes those on free and reducedprice meals.

“It does happen, especially with our new students and fifth graders. It’s new to them and it’s exciting,” Baker said. “We have to educate them at the beginning of the school year. They can have two breakfasts, but they have to pay for it and that can add up. Parents have to say it’s OK.”

USD 256 - Marmaton Valley

Meal prices for the Marmaton Valley district, grades kindergarten through six, are $2 for breakfast and $2.85 for lunch.

For grades 7-12, breakfast is $2.10 and lunch is $3.05.

Most Marmaton Valley students eat lunch at school, Superintendent Kim Ensminger said. She estimates between two-thirds to three-fourth of students eat the school meals, which are cooked on site in the school cafeteria.

“We have an experienced staff that knows how to make things that are appealing to kiddos,” Ensminger said.

In recent years, the schools allowed students to pick from between two meal options. Because of increased costs of food and shortages, it’s possible that practice may be discontinued next year.

Marmaton Valley typically has between 55% to 65% of its students receiving free or reduced-price meals. Last year, that number was 55%. Ensminger encourages families to apply to see if they are eligible.

Applications are given to families during enrollment, which will be Aug. 5-6.

USD 258 - Humboldt

Elementary lunches cost $2.90 and middle/high school lunches cost $3. All breakfasts are $2.05.

Free and reduced-price application forms are given to all families at enrollment and everyone is encouraged to apply to see if they qualify. About 48% of the district’s students receive free and reduced meals.

Love at first sight?

Not every student wants to eat school lunch.

What? Children can be picky eaters?

Sack lunches can be a healthy option for some students and can help them develop a better relationship with food that will benefit them in years to come, said Kathy McEwan, family and consumer science agent at Southwind Extension District.

It’s important to give children freedom and control over their food choices, to ensure they grow up with a healthy attitude about eating and mealtimes, she said.

“Make eating a pleasurable experience. Think about how much of our social life revolves around food and meals. We know the value of family meals and having that time together, hopefully on a daily basis. There’s a lot of research that backs that up,” she said.

McEwan follows the train of thought espoused by Ellyn Satter, a nationally known therapist who is considered an expert on eating. Satter teaches families how to transform eating into a joyful experience.

Satter says there is a division of responsibility between the parent and the child. Parents provide the meals. Children decide when, what and how much to eat.

“It’s good to establish that early on,” McEwan said. “Adults don’t always get hungry according to a clock, and neither do children.”

Children need the opportunity for three meals a day and healthy snacks.

It’s a new way of thinking that goes against what many of us learned, McEwan said. She shared a common story of someone who detested peas as a child but was forced to sit at a table for

hours with a plate full of nothing but peas, because his parents insisted he finish all his dinner.

“That’s not developing a healthy relationship with food,” McEwan said.

In fact, such behavior can cause lasting damage and potentially lead to dysfunctional eating behaviors, including eating disorders.

“That’s not saying parents need to become vending machines.

Not at all,” McEwan said.

Instead, allow children the freedom to make choices about what they eat. Let them have some sort of input in the process.

For example, go through the school’s menu with a child and have them pick what days they might want to eat school lunch and what days they may want to take a lunch.

When preparing a sack lunch, give the child a choice between two healthy options, McEwan advised.

“Give the child choices within your parameters. Rather than saying, ‘What do you want?’ ask if they want a turkey sandwich or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Of course, making a healthy sack lunch can be time consuming and expensive. It can be especially frustrating to try to accommodate a picky eater.

Whenever possible, prepare items in advance, McEwan advises.

For example, portion carrot sticks into baggies at the beginning of the week so you can simply toss them into a bag in the morning.

Perhaps a sandwich could be made the night before.

Fruit cups are a quick and easy alternative to fresh fruits.

“It is more work, but anything you can do ahead of time will be beneficial,” she said.

Variety also is important, McEwan said.

She advises parents to look for creative options on various websites for menu ideas. K-State Research and Extension offers a website, kidsacookin.org, that offers recipes that kids can help make, but also are good options for a lunch or breakfast meal.

Try these tasty bars for breakfast or for a snack!

INGREDIENTS:

6 tablespoons margarine 3 cups miniature marshmallows 1/2 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 cup raisins 4 cups ready-to-eat oat cereal circles (pictured Post's Honeycomb cereal) DIRECTIONS:

1. Spray a 9”x9”x2”-pan with cooking spray.

2. In microwave, melt margarine in a large microwave-safe bowl 3. Stir in peanut butter and marshmallows.

4. Microwave on high power for 1 minute, or until mixture is melted. Stir until smooth.

5. Add dry milk, cinnamon, raisins and cereal; stir until evenly coated.

7. Cool thoroughly and cut into squares.
