Cubs rout Fredonia in warm-up before districts
By TIMOTHY EVERSON The Iola Register
FREDONIA — When Coach Logan Wyrick waded into a huddle of his players at game’s end Friday night, several mistakes they had made had him a bit frustrated. Then, “I thought, we just won 36-7,” and it wasn’t time to dwell on miscues. The Cubs’ defeat of the Yellowjackets was thorough,

and, as often is the case in high school football, it could have been worse. Example: Third down and six at the Fredonia 40 early in the second period. Humboldt already led 14-0, and was on the verge — which it did later — of blowing the game open. Hesston Murrow, back in harness after missing two games with a knee injury, was at his familiar slot calling sig-
nals. He took the ball, juked a step or two to his left, cut through a crease and then, as he has several times this year, set sail for 37 yards to the three-yard line. The Cub sideline erupted, but then a yellow flag fluttering in a strong breeze that bathed the field throughout the game, wiped out Murrow’s sterling effort. A penalty moved the back back to near midfield and after an in-
complete pass, Tucker Hurst boomed a high punt that left the Yellowjackets set up on their own 20. With the way Humboldt’s defense played, far from an an anomaly this season, Fredonia’s chances of putting together a sustained drive were minuscule. Soon, the Cubs had the ball back. A few minutes later Jacob Barker, who rushed 16 times for 102 yards, turned in his
best effort of the evening, going 26 yards through the heart of Fredonia’s defense for a TD and a 20-0 Humboldt lead. While a few hiccups did try Wyrick’s patience, there were several highlights, other than Baker’s mad dash to the end zone. Humboldt’s first touchdown came on a 17-yard pass to the corner of the end zone, from See CUBS | Page B3

Mustangs and Fillies grab top spot at Indy
By TIMOTHY EVERSON The Iola Register
Both Iola cross country teams close out the regular season on a high note with both the varsity boys and girls taking the top spot at Independence. The junior varsity boys also finished first while the girls just missed out first by nine points. On the girl’s side, the Fillie’s finished nine points ahead of host Independence to take the top spot. “Our girls showed extreme “toughness” during the last part of this race,” head coach Marv Smith said. “I am not sure that our girls want to be described as “tough”, but I was impressed” Elka Billings led the way, finishing third with a time of 22:24. Rachel Bycroft (23:21) finished sixth, Kelsey Morrison (24:00) finished eighth and Madisyn Holloway (24:55) finished 13th to round out the medal winners. Lorie Carpenter (25:25) finished 17th, Audrey Coltrane (25:28) finished 19th and Marta Gonzalez (27:03) finished 22nd. The varsity boys were much more dominant in their race, finishing 20 points ahead of second place Pittsburg. Jack Adams led the way for the boys, finishing third with a time of 19:18 while Elijah Fawson (19:45) and See XC | Page B4

Iola blows by Osawatomie for a Homecoming win By TIMOTHY EVERSON The Iola Register
Some call it a blowout, a creaming, a whomping, a good ol’ fashion butt-kicking or just simply a good win. Iola head coach David Daugharthy called Iola’s 43-19 win over Osawatomie on Friday an “exclamation point.” “Osawatomie is a very sound football team offensively and defensively,” Daugharthy said. “We got after it. We had a lot of good looking plays on both sides of the ball. We had a couple busts on defense, but for the most part, this was our best game by far.” Just a week after the Mus-
tangs went on the road to grab their first win of the season at Parsons, they won their second in a row to bring their overall record to 2-4 and 1-3 in conference play. For the offense, it was the running game that took center stage as the Mustangs recorded 474 yards on the ground along with six rushing touchdowns. It was the performance that Daugharthy and the coaches had been waiting for from an offensive line, who had their share of growing pains so far this season. “I was really proud of our See MUSTANGS | Page B5

Marmaton Valley pounces on Madison; moves to 5-1 By CHRISTIAN GIN The Iola Register
MADISON — Trevor Wilson ran for 150 yards and scored two touchdowns as Marmaton Valley High School won big on the road, beating Madison 46-6 on Friday night. The Wildcats move up to 5-1 on the season as district play begins next week. Justice Pugh, Isaac Heskett and Caiden Elliot scored one touchdown each. Elliot also threw a touchdown to Korbin Smith.
“I’m proud of how hard we ran the ball and how well our defense was up front tonight,” head coach Gavin Cole said. “Our offensive line deserves a lot of credit for the holes they opened up and we were able to control the game with our rushing attack.” The Wildcat defense held Madison to only 87 total yards with 55 of them on the ground. Pugh caught an interception for the only turnover of the game. “Defensively I thought this was one of our best
games,” Cole said. “We tackled extremely well. They only allowed a touchdown on a trick play where one of our guys missed his assignment and got caught watching the backfield. Other than that, it was a good defensive effort.” Cole said he hopes the team can maintain their blocks in the open field for even longer runs on offense. He expects more progress from his receivers and other blockers in the coming weeks.
The Wildcats will host St. Paul next week for a district play game. The 5-1 Indians are coming off of their first loss of the season
