Whitworths’ goal to share love of sport

When Ron and Rhenda Whitworth purchased the Humboldt Speedway in 1990, the reason was not a complicated one.

“We all enjoyed racing and it was something we could do as a family,” Rhenda said.

“All of our family got very involved in it.”

It is because of that love of racing that the track is still going strong, despite the sudden death of Ron in 2012.

After Ron’s passing, his son Ryan embraced more of a leadership role and along with Rhenda, they continue

to build the Speedway to attract more and more events and talented drivers each year.

The tradition of running races on Friday nights started early for the family.

“We always ran (races) on Friday nights,” Rhenda said.

“In March, we’d start out on Saturday nights until school ended and then we would go to Friday nights and we’ve been running Friday nights ever since.”

Ryan takes great pride in that a Friday night trip out to the track has become such a regular and important part of so many people’s weekly schedules.

“It is just kind of a Friday night staple in our area and there are just so many race tracks on Saturday night that we don’t want to compete with everybody so we like to keep with our Friday night schedule,” Ryan said.

“That has helped us grow to where we are now.”

The other thing that has helped the track continue to grow is the constant improvements the Whitworths have made to the track over the years.

The concession stand was built in the early 2000s.

rooms. The family added a souvenir stand in 2013.

One of the biggest additions that fans may not immediately notice was the purchase of 25 additional acres of land in 2011 behind the Speedway.

This extra parcel has made it possible for the track to accommodate some of the huge fields that it currently can. The Humboldt Speedway now has the capability to have more than 200 cars in a single weekend.

“That has been what has built the ‘King of America’ to where it is and now we have that with the ‘Battle at the Bullring’ as well,” Ryan said. “We actually had more cars there than at the ‘King of America.’ It has all grown and developed into definitely one of the biggest races in Kansas and that Kansas has seen in 40-plus years. It is

comparable to what the Kansas State Fair used to hold in the late 1970s.”

Ryan said the family’s love of racing has certainly been passed down through the generations.

“I saw Dad race and then I raced for 15 years myself,” Ryan said. “It is just part of the family. This is what we believe in and this is what we know.”

Beyond their immediate family, the track has provided the Whitworths with many close connections through racing.

“It is like a second family to us,” Ryan said. “A lot of these people are here every single week. In March, we have racers from 17 or 18 states who came and spent money in the community.

“It is a pretty big deal, so I hope the community realizes what it does for tax revenue in our area.”

Folk keeps tradition alive Jesse Folk Jr.’s race day motivations continue to change

The Folk family has more racing trophies than they know what to do with.

In a pair of rooms in Jesse Jr., and Justin’s Iola Tranmission Shop sits all of their championship trophies.

They don’t keep them in the same room simply because there isn’t enough shelf space to make that possible.

Similiar to how UCLA men’s basketball hangs only national championship banners, the Folks take the same

approach to their trophy rooms. None of the hundreds of feature race trophies they earned during their storied careers are displayed in these rooms. Those trophies are given away to the kids.

These rooms are for the elite hardware.

Among their trophies are 12 Humboldt Speedway Points Championships for the modified division. The two brothers went on a run from 1999 to 2011 when no one could touch their dominance and mastery of the oval.

“It was a family tradition,” Jesse Jr., said.

The pair won 12 out of 13 titles at “The Hummer.” Justin notched eight modified championships, while Jesse Jr., had four. Jesse Jr., also has a street-stock title to his name.

“Growing up, that is just what we did,” Jesse Jr., said.

“I think I knew the firing order on a Chevrolet before I knew my ABC’s.”

For a time, the Folk brothers were the name to beat in racing.

Then in 2012, everything

changed.

That’s when their father, Jess Sr., became a priority in his battle with throat cancer.

Jess Sr., has also won a points championship at Humboldt. He earned his in the super-stock-division in 1993.

In addition to his dad, Justin also had a young family to think about. Those two considerations persuaded Justin it was time to step away from racing.

For brother Jesse Jr., the racing lifestyle continues, but at a different level.

For one, Jesse is in it more for the thrill, not the victory lap.

Several things changed his outlook.

In addition to Justin stepping away and his dad’s illness, the loss of Humboldt Speedway owner Ron Whitworth on Dec. 5, 2012, deeply impacted the racing community.

“It just wasn’t the same the next year,” Jesse Jr., said.

“After 2012, we didn’t do any good at all ... 2012 was that See FOLK | Page B10

key year when everything was done.”

“I think there were nine of us at one time,” Jesse Jr., said of his immediate racing community. “But out of all of them, I’m it. I’m the last one.

Everything changes I guess.”

Jesse credits The Speedway with its growth in popularity and more and more drivers from around the country with deeper pockets and more sophisticated cars.

“The technology has just changed so much,” Jesse Jr., said.

And while the Folks’ reign may be over at “The Hummer,” that hasn’t deterred Jesse Jr.’s love for the sport.

“It is the worst addiction there is,” Jesse Jr., said. “I’m there for more of the fun than the killer-instinct to win.”

“I do it just to get away,” Jesse Jr., said. “And that is the difference between the winners and the guys that do it just to compete.

“When my brother and I were racing, we would compete against each other and that would drive us to win.

Now if I just go down there to get away, I don’t want to tear my equipment up so I don’t take the chances I used to.”

Jesse is slowly but surely coming to accept the realization that he likely will not be taking very many more victory laps around the racetrack.

“That is a shock to your system, that feeling of not being competitive,” he says.

“I guess I must love it to still be going down there. I’ve never sold out. I threatened to a couple of times, but that

is my sanity I guess.”

Now Jesse Jr., Jess Sr., — whose cancer is in remission — and Jesse’s son Gerald go down to the track each weekend simply for the love of the sport.

Jesse said he hopes his sons will get involved in the sport, but he doesn’t want to push them into it before they are ready.

“My oldest son will be 15 in May,” Jesse Jr., said. “He has raced go-karts and had two track championships in the go-kart deal when he was 8.

“That is when the (2012)

change started happening, so he quit that and got into (school-sponsored) sports.

I told him that he has from then until he is 18 to do those, because once you’re out of high school, you probably have to give those up.”

Folk says he sees fewer and fewer local drivers down on the track and he hopes that will turn around because it was such a staple for local drivers to go down to Humboldt in the past.

“I’m hoping that it gets back big around here,” Jesse Jr., said.

Sigg making name for himself Son emerging from father’s shadow in racing world

If just one bet or one engine hadn’t broken, Chase Sigg’s racing career could be very different.

Chase’s father, Rodney, was discussing cars with his friends when his journey to becoming a two-time Humboldt Speedway Points Champion began.

“Actually, I kind of did it on a bet,” Rodney said. “A buddy of mine, Gary Lower, liked the dirt tracking and

I was drag racing to begin with. Then he said if he found a car would I go in on it. I said sure.

“He found a car and I called his bluff, because I didn’t think he would do it. So we started out in street style and it just escalated from there into the modifieds.”

During Rodney’s racing career, there was one member of his “pit team” he could always count on.

“Chase was there every night,” Rodney said. “Even as a little kid, he was beat-

ing the bodies out on the cars and was out there working in the garage.”

Some of Chase’s earliest memories are at the track with his dad.

“I was kind of born around it,” Chase said. “I started going to the race track when I was 3 years old and just took to it ever since.”

Chase grew up watching his father win his titles and in 2010 he began his quest to add his own.

Chase began racing when his father was still going

strong.

And even though Rodney enjoyed sharing the track with his son, when his engine died during a racing weekend in 2012, the elder Sigg took it as a sign.

“I broke an engine in my car,” Rodney said. “I didn’t have the nerves and it didn’t really bother me. The drive just wasn’t there.

“Chase told me to get in his car, due to me being in a points race, and I said, ‘You know what, I think I’m done with it and I’m going to go up

there and watch.’”

“I got more butterflies and adrenaline watching him than when I was driving so that is when I decided it was time to quit.”

The younger Sigg understands why his father made the choice to step down when he did, but he still looks back fondly at the time they shared the track.

“That was a blast,” Chase said. “I wish we could still do it today.”

Sigg: stepping up Continued from 12

Rodney enjoys his new spot at the track though.

He serves as a member of Chase’s “pit team” now and has the ability to watch his son perform in the sport they share a love for.

“That was the main reason that I stepped out,” Rodney said. “I wanted to get behind him and support him. I just lost the drive for it.”

In his career, Chase has raced at several different tracks, but it is the one where he spent so much of his childhood that holds a special place in his heart and remains his favorite.

“Humboldt is one of the best facilities,” Chase said.

“It is because of the Whitworths. They always take care of you.”

It also doesn’t hurt that “The Hummer” hosts some of the biggest races in the state.

“It is huge,” Chase said.

“The bigger races are in front

of thousands and thousands of people watching you hopefully do well or at least don’t screw up. It is probably the biggest adrenaline rushes that I could ever have.”

The Siggs have made many friendships over the years at The Speedway and that is an addition attraction to why they value their time at Humboldt so much “We have several good friends down there,” Chase said. “The friendships keep growing and growing... It is just pretty cool.”

Although Rodney won’t be sharing the track in 2016, he will be embracing the role that Chase held for so many years as the Sigg car’s biggest fan.

“It is my turn to help him now,” Rodney said.

Chase will use that support during the upcoming season at Humboldt as he and his No. 18 car try to add another championship to the Sigg mantle.

Canadian Connection Three international drivers move to Humboldt to build on their racing careers

In 2013, Team Big Eagle Motorsports decided to hit the road to compete against the best modifieds in the United States, sending drivers Joey Galloway and Masen Big Eagle, then 16, on tour to do battle in the USMTS modified series.

Galloway — an accomplished crew chief winning races all over the country with former-NASCAR driver Steve Arpin — took to driving himself after Arpin signed a deal with Venturini Motorsports in 2009.

Since that time, there has been no looking back for Galloway, who won many races around his home and was hired on with the Manor, Saskatchewan-based dirt modified Big Eagle Motorsports team to mentor Derek Big Eagle’s son Masen.

The team made their first journey to Humboldt Speedway for the 2013 King of America and found some great success in brand-new GRT race cars.

After leaving the Speedway from four straight days of racing, the team had a week off and nowhere to go so they camped out in the Bennett

Coin Laundry parking lot in Iola, beating out bodies and straightening cars before renting a shop from Humboldt Speedway to work on their cars throughout the season in between races.

At the end of the season, they came up just 20 points short of the Rookie of the Year honors and had competed in 75 events over 15 states.

When the new year came round, they came to Humboldt to compete in the “Battle at the Bullring.” On their way back to Canada they had a chance to brainstorm during their 18-hour drive home and decided to hit the tour once again. A few phone calls later, and they are now based out of Humboldt once again.

The team plans to compete at Humboldt when they are not on the road with Galloway being the mentor once again for the now 19-year-old Big Eagle and rookie Jet Big Eagle who just turned 16 and looks to take home the Rookie of The Year honors in USMTS.

New races has owner excited for 2016 slate

Ryan Whitworth, one of the owners of Humboldt Speedway, is looking forward to some new races at the Speedway this year.

April 22: ASCS Red River Region ASCS Sprints The Humboldt Speedway has partnered with ASCS to help increase the quality of its Sprint Car racing.

“We are trying to expand on our Sprint Car racing so we have signed on with ASCS Red River Region Sprint Cars,” Whitworth said. “That will bring the fastest Sprint Cars that have ever been to Humboldt.”

Whitworth believes the sprint cars are a division of racing that fans will learn to enjoy.

“We want to grow that,” Whitworth said. “Our fan base doesn’t really like Sprint Cars right now but there is a huge draw for it in other areas and I think it is a market (that will catch on).”

May 27: Whitworth Memorial Special This is not a new event, but it has been rained out the past two seasons and Whitworth hopes that they will be able to host it this year.

“We’ve tried to do it on Sunday in the past, but we’ve gone back to Friday like our normal races,” Whitworth said.

The event holds a special place in the heart of the Whitworth family as it is a tribute to Ron Whitworth, Ryan’s father, and Duane Whitworth, Ryan’s grandfather.

“They spent a lot of time at this track and built it to what it is,” Whitworth said.

“It is a special race to our family for sure.”

July 22: Midwest Modified Lites Another new race that will add plenty of excitement to the track will be when the modified lites take over on July 22.

“They are a smaller version of a modified that run off of a four-cylinder engine,” Whitworth said.

September 3: Bus Races As the season wraps up, the track will host a fan-favorite in early September.

“Last year 4,700 people attended the bus races and seating capacity here is only 3,500, so there was a lot of standing-room-only.”

The buses are a very unique style of race.

“It has really turned into a great event,” Whitworth said. “It ties a lot of the schools and surrounding communities together and brings families together for a good time.”

Last year, there were 26 buses involved in the competition.
