Keaton celebration to recall the Wild West The 23rd annual Buster Keaton Celebration will be a family affair this year on Sept. 23 and 24 at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.

Special guests to help remember “Keaton and the Wild West” are Melissa Talmadge Cox (Keaton’s granddaughter) and Barbara Talmadge (Keaton’s daughter-inlaw).

Buster Keaton “visited” the Old West many times, starting with the Arbuckle short, “Out West” (1918).

There has long been speculation that Buster had Cherokee blood in his family and — interestingly — he played Native Americans half a dozen times onscreen very convincingly.

The evening films also will explore the Western Frontier with Friday’s showing of Keaton’s iconic “The General,” and Saturday’s masterpiece, “Go West.”

Both will be preceded by film shorts, “Out West” on Friday, and “Moonshine” on Saturday.

As in years past, the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra will provide musical accompaniment for the films.

Barbara Talmadge is a former champion tennis player and the mother of Melissa and her brothers. She knew Buster and Eleanor well, and is delighted to share stories of her experiences with the Keaton family.

Talmadge Cox is an artist and board member of the International Buster Keaton Society, Inc. She is known for generously sharing memories of her “Grandpa Buster.”

Presentations are still free (if you’re from Iola) For the first time in the 23-year history of the Buster Keaton Celebration, attending the morning and afternoon workshops will include a fee for out-of-town visitors.

Attendance has been set at $20 per person, to help cover expenses related to the event.

The registration fee provides admission to the afternoon session on Friday, Sept.

23, and the morning and afternoon sessions on Saturday, Sept. 24.

Iola residents will be admitted free to any session, courtesy of a City of Iola Convention and Tourism grant, organizers said.

However, Iolans should be prepared to show proof of residency in order to obtain a free admission pass.

The evening screenings beginning at 7 o’clock both Friday and Saturday will remain free and open to the public, wherever they reside.

Interactive program makes learning fun Kid Power’s Operation Lunch Line 3D is a highly interactive music show, designed to help children grades K-6 learn the value of good nutrition and exercise.

Using visual effects in 3D, the entire audience miniaturizes, joining Kid Power on a journey inside the human body of a boy named Max who feels lousy because he doesn’t eat or move properly.

Through audience participation the kids not only educate and motivate Max, but in doing so, learn they, too, are special, filled with all the “kid power” needed to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors necessary to make healthenhancing choices and feel great.

The program will focus on two primary areas: exercise and nutrition.

Students will learn how to define “out of shape,” understand how food gives energy to power muscles, define and understand how calories work, among other aspects.

Lavishly costumed characters and giant puppets whirl, dance and sing on their journey through Lewis Carroll’s land of fantasy, including the Hearts, the Cheshire Cat and Wonderland’s other unpredictable residents.

Founded in 1976 by Executive Director Jerry Bickel, Bits ’N Pieces is dedicated to influencing the world of tomorrow by enchanting the children of today. Through the theatrical retelling of

classic children’s stories, each with its own unique life lesson and moral, Bits ’N Pieces brings to life the magical wonderment of children’s fantasy and reinforces the core values long told and emphasized by our great storytellers.

From script and design to actual building and choreography, it takes two years to produce each complete giant puppet production.

Our work has received the Atlanta Cultural Olympiad’s Award for Excellence and Innovation in the Arts as well as the Arts Council of Hillsborough County’s Award for Excellence in Arts Education.

Bowlus executive director The purpose behind the story was to answer questions related to the Bowlus Fine Arts and Cultural Center. I’m sure that at the time of its publication Mary’s story did its job and clarified a number of misconceptions about the Bowlus.

Here we are 23 years later and its seems to me that the general public will be well served if Mary’s article is updated and published once again for the community to have the opportunity to have a better understanding of the Bowlus and its roll in our community.

Before I begin, I wish to thank Mary and the other three Bowlus Directors — Dale P. Creitz, George C. Foreman, and Carol Mix — who did a wonderful job nurturing the Bowlus and the fine arts in our community.

After almost 52 years in the neighborhood, the Bowlus still remains that “mysterious stranger” for many people.

Who is she, this mysterious woman? To whom does she owe allegiance? Does she serve a useful purpose or is she just a pretty girl out for a good time?

While a little mystique can be sort of glamorous, it doesn’t make for a warm neighborly relationship. At the risk, therefore, of demystifying the myth, let’s explore all the reasons why this aloof “lady of the corner” is really just the girl next door.

Let’s pretend, for instance, that we’ve just met at the back fence between our two yards, and you have a few questions you want answered. You be Q. and I’ll be A. Q. Who does the Bowlus, in fact, belong to?

A. Good place to begin!

The people of the community are the real owners of the Center. The USD 257 Board of Trustees (who also hap-

pens to be the school board) is responsible for maintaining for all of us the trust set up by the late Thomas H. Bowlus. School board officials actually convene as a Trustee Board and keep a separate set of minutes from USD 257.

Q. Isn’t this a conflict?

A. Any present or former board member will tell you, “It’s not easy.” However, Mr. Bowlus’s trust established the dual role and, when challenged, the courts have upheld it, although they did recognize that it could be seen as a conflict if fiduciary responsibility was not carefully maintained.

That’s one reason why Bowlus funds are never mingled with USD funds.

Q. How can people be sure the funds are used properly?

A. The Bowlus keeps an extensive set of books that are audited every year. A copy of the audit and the year-end reports are sent to the District Court. These books are available at the Center to anyone who cares to inquire.

Q. Why does the school district pay rent to use the building?

A. It didn’t for a long time.

It did pay a few expenses, like insurance and the director’s salary when the director was a teacher. It also made a $15,000 “contribution” for several years. However, expenses were very low when the building and the

equipment were new during those initial years.

Q. So, what does the district get for this “rent”?

A. There are more than 40,000 square feet in the Center. The school district uses about 11,000 square feet on a regular basis as high school fine arts classroom space along with the use of the Bowlus auditorium for school performances. In addition, most of the furniture and equipment were purchased with trust funds and have been used freely by the school (and the community) all these years.

Bowlus: Wide use from across the county keeps us busy A. From the very beginning everybody has used the Center as an economic development tool. We frequently hear from people who claim that the Bowlus was part of the reason they decided to move into the community.

Events at the Center bring thousands of people to Iola and the surrounding area each year who spend money in restaurants, motels, businesses and gas stations. The Bowlus serves a nine-county area, but is consistently drawing from a much larger geographical area. Last year alone, the Bowlus documented more than 80 different ZIP codes at its Cultural Attraction Series events, coming from 15 states.

The Bowlus office staff serves the daily needs of the teachers and students, taking and delivering messages from the high school office and from parents, helping with the use of the copier, and helping to maintain a safe environment by controlling admittance to the classroom wing through the use of the USD 257 mandated doorbell system. Custodians clean the classrooms, restrooms and hallways used daily by USD teachers and students. The Bowlus technical director and his assistant aid the teachers and the students in preparation for music concerts, school programs and drama productions, for which they also oversee the design and construction of theatrical sets, design and operate the sound board and system, and design, hang, focus and operate the lighting equipment. USD 257 pays the same rental fees for their use of the auditorium and the Creitz Recital Hall that every other user pays.

The USD Board of Education as Bowlus Trustee sets the rental fee amounts with recommendations from the Bowlus Commission and the director.

The Bowlus director serves as the building administrator and works closely with representatives of the school district to schedule the district’s student programs. The director also solicits funds to pay for elementary, middle and high school professional children’s theater performances, guest speakers, workshops and clinics for fine arts students.

Why?

A. For many years the Bowlus Center did not receive any funds from either the City of Iola or Allen County. In 1995, when the Bowlus was faced with meeting the accessibility needs of handicapped and elderly patrons who were not able to manage stairs, the Bowlus asked the City of Iola for help in constructing a wheelchair ramp on the west side of the building.

The new ramp cost $10,350, and the majority of the cost was covered by the city.

Later in 1997 the Bowlus and the City of Iola came to an agreement that provided the Bowlus with $16,000 a year. The agreement stated that the annual payment is in lieu of any rental fees formerly made by the City Municipal Band, the Iola Area

Symphony Orchestra, the Iola Community Theatre, the Kansas Barbershop Chorus and for any public meetings held for the benefit of the citizens of Iola. The city recognized that the Bowlus Center was relieving the taxpayers of the need to provide and maintain a comparable municipal facility. The agreement was revisited in 2013 and increased to 1 mill, approximately $30,000.

In 2006, the Allen County Commission voted to pay the Bowlus Center $2,500 in lieu of payments for rental fees by Allen County 4-H clubs, Allen County Storm Watcher meetings, and other public meetings of importance to the citizens of Allen County. In 2013, when the city increased its support to 1 mill, the county increased its support to what at that time was one-third of a mill, $32,000. This year, 2016, the

commissioners approved a payment of $100,000 a year for three years, an increase of $68,000 a year, in support of the Bowlus operations and maintenance to help offset the reduction in support

by USD 257.

Both the county and the city recognize that the Bowlus Center has been a valuable asset in recruitment of business, industry, and professional people to the community as well as promoting travel and tourism for the area.

County and city leaders recognize that it is in the best interest of their citizens to keep the Bowlus Center in good repair and that it be made available for both school children and citizens as per the wish of Mr. Bowlus.

Q. What does the community get from having the Bowlus in the neighborhood?

Q. Is the Bowlus really used much by the area community or are those people just a handy audience.

A. In the 2014-2015 annual report the Bowlus Center reported a total of 803 separate performances, rehearsals, meetings, exhibits, recitals, workshops, etc. This is in addition to daily high school fine arts classes held through USD 257.

Q. Who on earth are all these people who use the Center?

A. In addition to USD 257, users in the past 10 years include Allen Community College, Allen County 4-H, Allen County Spelling Bee, City of Iola Designated Storm Shelter, Allen County Storm Watchers Annual Meeting, Combined Meetings for City of Iola Council and Allen County Commissioners, Classique Dance Studio, Emprise Bank, Iola Area Symphony, Iola Municipal Band, Iola Community Theatre, Gates Rubber, Kansas Dialogue, Landmark Bank, See BOWLUS | Page 20

Q. Why do you need a “Friends of the Bowlus”?

Q. Whew! But what about the Bowlus Speaker Series, the Cultural Attractions Series, the Creitz Recital Hall Series, the Buster Keaton Celebration and the Mary L. Martin Art Gallery Exhibits? Don’t these events take away from operations?

A. Thanks to the Sleeper Family, Whitehead, Stephenson and the Clopton Family Trusts, plus local donors and grants through the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities, Kansas Humanities Council, Kansas Arts Commission, and the Mid America Arts Alliance, we don’t have to subsidize these events with operations money. Ticket sales alone will not pay the cost of these events. Our auditorium only has 750 seats and even if we sold every seat for every performance we’d still not have enough revenue to pay for some of the performances. The private trusts and grants provide funds for programming which allows the Bowlus to meet its mission as set in Mr. Bowlus’s will.

Q. If we can’t make money why do we have a professional touring series?

A. Mr. Bowlus specifically indicated that we were to make available entertainment not otherwise avail-

The court has interpreted that to mean that the trust is under obligation to provide experiences of a professional nature and subsidize them if necessary.

Q. How do you find the performers and what do they cost?

A. We enlist the help of the Cultural Attractions Committee to help decide the kind of things we are interested in every year. We look through information received in the mail from hundreds of agents and artists worldwide. Mostly we make our contacts with booking agents but occasionally we can book directly with the artist.

Before we book performers we like to see them or obtain a DVD or CD or talk with someone who has seen

them. Any artist you’ve heard of costs quite a bit; and anybody you’ve seen on TV costs a WHOLE BUNCH. On the other hand, most people won’t buy tickets if they’ve never heard of the artist. It’s an interesting problem.

Q. If I go to something at the Bowlus, do I have to dress up?

A. You would be surprised how often I’m (Mary) ask that question. No one at the Bowlus cares how you are dressed. We notice that most audience members dress so they are comfortable. Neat and clean counts; elegance isn’t necessary.

Q. What are the professional entertainers really like in person.

A. Believe me, they are a lot like people in general.

Most of them are charming

and a few of them I wouldn’t invite back. They are, however, almost 100 percent interested in doing a show

A. I guess you could say we’re leaving no stone unturned to assure the future of the Center. Wouldn’t it be nice to establish an endowment so that in the far distant future your grandchildren and their children could be enjoying events at the Bowlus? I’d say that’s a legacy in which the entire community could participate.

Note: The Friends of the Bowlus, Inc., has raised and contributed more than $1.2 million toward projects for the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.

It is with their support that the Bowlus Center auditorium has been able to remain a state-of-the-art facility. The Friends’ current project, the new fine arts plaza, is projected to cost $1.2 million, of which they have $1 million in hand. Their goal is to make the Bowlus Center safer and more accessible than ever before for the students and the citizens of Allen County.

BOWLUS PRESERVATION FUND - New in 2016!

The Bowlus Preservation Fund has been created out of a need to collect and reserve funds for major or emergency repairs to the Bowlus building or aging equipment.

For the last 20 years, the Bowlus has relied heavily on grants from the Friends of the Bowlus, Inc., to help cover these expenses.

With the Friends' funds being focused on the new Bowlus Fine Arts Plaza project, it is imperative that an alternative "safety net" be planned.

Donations designated to the Bowlus Preservation Fund will be invested, earning interest and dividends income, but available for immediate use when a need arises. To kick off this campaign, $1 will be collected from each ticket sold for the Bowlus' 20162017 Cultural Attraction Series events.
