Mustangs bring experience to the fold

The 2012-13 basketball season started off splendidly for Iola High’s boys.

Even with a series of heart-breaking losses — one in overtime, another in double overtime — Iola still sported a 7-4 record at the midway point of their season.

But for whatever reason, things went south from there.

The Mustangs ended the year with nine straight losses, even though they were in contention for a victory in several instances, to finish with a 7-13 record.

“We just made a habit of losing,” IHS head coach Bill Peeper said. “We couldn’t get over the hump.”

“That returning experience should help us be more consistent and better able to handle adversity,” Peeper said.

Leading the way for Iola are senior forward Tyler Powelson and guard Trent Latta. All three were fulltime starters. Senior guard Tyler McIntosh also started on occasion.

Powelson, at 6-2, is Iola’s leading returning scorer at 8.6 points and 7.9 rebounds

to go with 1.4 blocks per contest. He earned first-team allPioneer League honors.

“He likes to block shots, and he has a great presence inside,” Peeper said. “We really hope to expand his offensive game this season. I expect to see him average a double-double.”

On the outside, Latta averaged 8.1 points, nearly 2 1/2 steals and 1.7 assists per game in 2012-13.

“He’s a tough kid,” Peeper said. “He’s the type of kid you always want on your side. Whenever we needed a hustle play, he was usually the one who provided it. I

expect a lot out of him this year. We hope to expand his responsibilities as well.”

Kauth, a 6-1 forward, averaged more than seven points and nearly three rebounds per game last season.

“Adam is great at attacking the goal,” Kauth said.

“He’s so aggressive at getting to the rim. The only thing he and Tyler need to improve on is their free throw shooting.

They both can up their scoring averages by hitting their free throws.”

McIntosh is a valuable tool in his ability to play either inside or outside, Peeper said. His defense was a team strength last season, and will likely improve as he starts full time.

“It’s a pretty balanced group,” Peeper said. “We have a lot of quickness. Tyler McIntosh and Trent will stabilize the backcourt. Their ball handing will manage the game for us. The guards should be good at getting to the lane.”

The team speed should allow for more transition opportunities.

But while Iola has several good, quick athletes, it has little height in the post.

“Rebounding will be a key for this group,” Peeper said.

and aggressiveness to make up for a lack of size. Outside shooting is another area we will need to improve. Struggles from the perimeter and an undersized post has proven to be a difficult combination to overcome in recent seasons.”

Future bright for upcoming Fillies squad

A talented, but green, Iola High Fillies squad took the court in 2012-13, and took its lumps in the process.

In replacing its entire starting lineup and almost all of its varsity experience, Iola started slowly before showing marked signs of improvement by midseason.

But wins were scarce, and Iola ended the season with a 1-19 record, in front of head coach Becky Carlson.

“We really had to throw them in the fire,” said Carlson, “but I think they’re better because of it.”

Indeed, Iola could be in store for a fun ride this season. Unlike last year, the Fillies return their entire starting lineup and most of their returning letter winners from a season ago.

“I can see more confidence in them,” Carlson said.

“They know what they’re doing now much better than when they started last season.”

Even with all the returning experience, the Fillies will have only one senior this season in forward Hannah Endicott. As Iola’s lone senior, Endicott has become a valuable leader on the team.

All bring different attributes to the team.

“Emery is a tremendous competitor and was our leading scorer and rebounder,” Carlson said. “She’s a strong defender as well.”

Piazza, who started at point guard last season, will shift over to the shooting guard position.

“But starting her at point guard really took her out of her best role as a shooter,” Carlson said. “She’s got a great jumper and she brings a lot of energy to the floor every time out.”

Moore’s quickness and shooting touch from beyond the 3-point arc were pivotal in Iola’s improved play down the stretch.

It’s also no coincidence that Iola’s level of play improved considerably with the return of Haar.

“Addie missed more than half the year with her arm injury,” Carlson said. “She is so strong with the ball, and she can jump. She got a lot of steals inside.”

Long was a key reserve and likely will start as point guard. Her improved play also will be counted on to turn last year’s weakness — ball handling — into a team strength in 2013-14.

“She’s worked on her ball handling a great deal in the offseason,” Carlson said.

“She’s a good distributor.

Having her in place really frees up our other players, but she can shoot the ball, too.”

Jo Lohman, another junior, will return to the team Dec. 14 upon her return to Iola as part of a foreign exchange study program.

“Jo’s a battler,” Carlson said. “She’s a great rebound-

er and did a nice job of scoring for us last season when we needed her.”

Two sophomores, Mikeala Platt and Ashlie Shields, both saw limited varsity experience.

“Ashlie’s a good athlete who can take care of the ball.

She’s a scrappy little thing.”

Platt also has made her mark with her aggressiveness, Carlson said.

With that much returning experience, underclassmen may have a hard time denting the playing rotation, although Carlson has a talented group of freshmen willing to take up the challenge.

Cubs hope to rebuild on last year's success HUMBOLDT — After bidding adieu to one of the most successful Humboldt High basketball teams in recent memory, it’s time to look ahead.

Those who think the Cubs will struggle after losing four starters from last season’s 25-1 squad should do so at their own peril.

“I’m kind of anxious to see how we do,” said head coach David Taylor, who piloted the 2012-13 Humboldt squad to second place in the Class 3A state tournament in March.

“We have a lot of kids who really didn’t get much of an opportunity for playing time in the past who want to step up and see what they can do.

We have a lot of shoes to fill.”

In order to stay at or near the top of the Tri-Valley League, the Cubs will rely on one returning starter in senior guard Hunter Murrow, a handful of other reserves who saw limited playing time and a boatload of incoming players who saw plenty of success at the junior varsity

“Our junior varsity lost four games combined over the past two seasons and our C team went undefeated,” Taylor said. “That doesn’t necessarily correlate to success at the varsity level, but we have a good group of kids who have played together since they’ve been in the fifth grade, and they’re fun to be around.”

Leading the Cub attack is the 6-foot senior guard in Murrow, who averaged 6.5 points per game, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per contest in 2012-13.

“Hunter is the face of how we do things here,” Taylor said. “He works hard every day, he’s a tremendous student and he always puts the team first. In his four years here, he’s never put himself in front of the team.”

Murrow will be joined in

the starting lineup by senior guard Caleb Vanatta, who averaged 3.0 points per game as a reserve. Vanatta’s defensive prowess earned him playing time on last year’s loaded roster, Taylor noted.

Humboldt will need others to step in the same manner this season.

“Caleb can be a streaky shooter,” Taylor said. “When he gets hot, he can be tough to stop.”

Justin Meins, a 6-foot junior forward, was a mainstay on Humboldt’s junior varsity last season and will slide over into a prominent role on varsity this year.

“Justin will give us a good inside/outside presence,” Taylor said. “He can be very effective from 15 feet and in.”

Markiz Pulliam also will provide Humboldt some much-needed size inside, Taylor said.

“A lot of his playing time will be dictated by how he does on the defensive end,” Taylor said.

Junior Jacob Carpenter, a standout on the football field, also will be a defensive stopper for the Cubs.

“We’re going to need him to help us with rebounding,” Taylor said.

Therein lies perhaps the Cubs’ largest issues: lack of size.

“Last year, we had all sorts of guys above 6 foot who could out jump everybody,” Taylor said. “We can’t do that this year. We need to check off and box out, or it’s gonna make it tough.”

Kason Siemens, another shooter, offers good athleticism as a wing, with solid outside shooting. He was Humboldt’s leading scorer at the JV level last season.

Alex Murrow, a senior guard, will be counted on as a defender.

Ethan Bartlett also offers scoring options with his ability to drive to the hoop, while Robbie Sellman and Caleb D’Armond are certain to see playing time as well.

Taylor foresees Eureka as the team to beat in TVL play this season.

games. They return almost everybody. I think Fredonia will be much improved, and Caney is always competitive.

Hopefully, we’ll be up there near the top, too.”

Humboldt gets the first crack against Eureka in both teams’ season-opener Dec. 6.

The Cubs will host the Humboldt Invitational Tournament the following week.

Lady Cubs have pieces in place for TVL run

HUMBOLDT — Humboldt High’s Lady Cubs have some work to do if they hope to increase their win total for the third consecutive year.

Their head coach is confident they can do so.

“We’ve already come a long way,” head coach Sherri Nelson said. “I have some high expectations for the girls this season.”

They’ll join established performers Lekota Wilson — Humboldt’s leading scorer from a season ago — Karsyn Menzie, Kayle Riebel and Delaney Umholtz.

Among the newcomers are Ally Johnson, a senior transfer out of Chanute, Mallory Roush and Madison Keller, who comes to Humboldt from Crest High.

“Plus, we have a great group of freshmen who may have to step up for us,” Nelson said.

Leading the way for the Lady Cubs is the 5-8 junior guard Wilson, who led Humboldt with 138 points in 201213, an average of 6.6 points per game. She also drained a team-high 10 3-pointers.

Morgan Morris, a 5-9 power forward, is the other.

Umholtz, a 5-6 junior guard, has been a key defensive performer, particularly with her athletic ability and hustle, Nelson said.

Junior guard Cheyenne English and sophomore guard Megan Hudlin will provide depth.

Others, such as sophomore Anna Whitcomb also may be counted on, sooner rather than later.

“Our practices have been phenomenal,” Nelson said.

“We have some freshmen who demonstrate they really want to play on the varsity.”

Meanwhile, the incoming transfers will give Humboldt a boost at some point.

“Madison Keller really should shine as our point guard,” Nelson said. “I remember playing Crest last season, and even though we won handily, she had a great game for them. She’ll be valuable for us.”

But Keller won’t be eligible until after the fall semester has concluded.

Ally Johnson and Mallory Roush will look to earn playing time as incoming transfers as well.

Nelson sees the Tri-Valley League race as wide open.

She noted Burlington is the defending Kansas Class 3A champion, “but they’ve lost quite a bit. Caney is going to be tough. After that,

Humboldt High junior Lekota Wilson, who led the team in scoring last season, returns to play for the Lady Cubs. it’s anybody’s guess.”

Humboldt opens the season at home against Erie on Dec. 6.

The Lady Cubs will host the Humboldt Invitational Tournament the following week.

Wildcats aim high during rebuilding season MORAN — Last year, Tim Stinnett had options.

With nine seniors on his Marmaton Valley High squad, Stinnett had ample opportunities to make a lineup change if necessary.

That luxury no longer exists — at least for now.

With only 11 players — and three upperclassmen — on the 2013-14 Wildcat basketball squad, Stinnett understands the importance of newcomers adapting quickly to varsity basketball.

“This is definitely a rebuilding year,” said Stinnett, entering his second year as Wildcat head coach. “With such few players, they are all well-conditioned. Or if they’re not now, they’re gonna be.”

Marmaton Valley returns only one experienced player from last year’s 7-13 season, which ended in the Class 1A, Division I substate tournament.

Senior guard Micheal Genn “is a great defender,” Stinnett said. “He plays excellent help defense. We’re going to look for him to be a leader for us on offense this season.”

Tenth-graders Brady Newman and Keagan Boyd — part of Marmaton Valley’s eight-member sophomore class — saw limited varsity action.

“Brady has grown up and improved a lot,” Stinnett said. “He’s a little stronger, and will help us in the high post.”

Senior forward Joey Jefferies returns to the team after playing his freshman season but not as a sophomore or junior.

“He is big and physical and can rebound,” Stinnett said. “He impresses me with

his ability to get to the ball.”

Dan Myers and Wyatt Bollinger will come off the bench or see occasional spot duty.

“We’ve got a raw group — not much experience — but I like this group of kids,” Stinnett said. “They all get along and they’re eager to learn. They pick up what I’m trying to teach fairly quickly.

They’re a fun group to be around.”

A pair of old rivals, Union-

town and Crest, will be tough to beat in Three Rivers League play, he said.

“Uniontown has some nice players coming back, and Crest is always a tough, wellcoached basketball team,” Stinnett said. “How well we play together will dictate how competitive we can be.”

Early signs in practice are encouraging.

“The guys really like helping each other out,” he said.

Former Wildcat standout takes reins at MV MORAN — With only 10 players on its roster, Marmaton Valley High will rely on a blend of upperclassmen and a talented crop of incoming freshmen for the 2012-13 basketball season.

The Wildcats return three starters under new head coach Gavin Cole, himself a former multi-sport standout for Marmaton Valley.

“With our numbers, the girls are going to have to play a lot, and they’re going to have to play smart,” said Cole, 23, a 2008 MV graduate. “That means staying out of foul trouble and limiting turnovers.”

Seniors Kaitlyn Ensminger and Emily Meiwes join sophomore Mackenzie Tynon in the starting lineup.

“Kaitlyn is valuable in that she can play multiple positions,” Cole said. “We’re going to look to her to handle the ball quite a bit.”

Ensminger’s leadership on the team is invaluable as well.

Meiwes, meanwhile, is a solid rebounder who will be looked upon to score from

Tynon’s athleticism will be key for her, Cole said.

“She’s an all-around good player who moves well,” he said. “She’s good at getting to the ball and blocking shots. I’d like to see her score some points.”

Sophomore Tanna Lutz and senior Lauren Korte will be looked upon for added depth.

The great unknown will be how quickly Marmaton Valley’s talented freshman class adapts to the high school level.

Magie Stevenson and Misty Storrer led a solid middle school team last season, Cole noted.

“Kyla will step in immediately,” he said. “We’ll rely on her to handle the ball quite a bit.”

Misty Storrer is athletic enough to play a lot for us as well,” he continued. “She does a great job with her rebounding.”

Brighter days lie ahead for the Wildcat program.

Cole noted Marmaton Valley’s junior high program has 17 players in two grade levels.

“We have some good

height, and if we’re solid on defense, we can force the other teams to have to rely on jumpers,” Cole said.

“We’re going to have to do a lot of things right. We need to take care of the ball, do a good job of rebounding to prevent second-chance points," he continued. "We need to play our style of basketball. We also need to be good free throw shooters.”

Three Rivers League play should be competitive this season.

“Jayhawk-Linn looks like it will be pretty good,” Cole said. “St. Paul is pretty good,

Go ahead and count out the Lancers; they dare you COLONY — Crest High enters the 2013-14 season with most prognosticators expecting the team to take a step back.

Gone are long-time starters Kyle Hammond, Jordan Morton and Jesse Boone, the heart and soul of a team that qualified two straight years to the Class 1A State Basketball Tournament.

That’s just the way head coach Travis Hermreck likes it.

“We’re gonna be a lot better than people give us credit for,” said Hermreck, entering his eighth year at the helm at CHS. “I really hope people underestimate how good this team will be.”

The Lancers bring back three players who saw plenty of experience last year, including senior guard Landon Stephens, junior guard Austin Green and senior forward Brock Ellis.

Add to the mix an intriguing — and athletic — batch of newcomers, and you have the potential for another return trip to Hays.

Ellis’ return to the court was anything but certain, after he injured his knee at the state tournament in March, and spent the subsequent 7 1/2 months recovering from surgery.

“He’s done a tremendous job of rehabbing and getting himself in shape,” Hermreck said. “He’s better on that knee than I thought he would be. Ellis brings an offensive threat to the court “anywhere from the basket to 25 feet,” Hermreck said.

Stephens, meanwhile, brings a blue-collar approach to the guard position.

guard,” Hermreck said. “He likes to get underneath and do a lot of the dirty work a team needs to be successful.”

Austin Green, a junior guard, also brings a physical approach to the other guard position.

“He’s a competitor,” Hermreck said. “He loves to win.”

Sophomore Hunter Frazell is expected to contribute immediately as well after stepping up frequently as a freshman in 2012-13.

“With guys like Hunter, we have several interchangeable players,” Hermreck said. “We don’t have to wor-

ry about focusing on one guy, because we have several who can do the job.”

Evan Godderz, a 5-10 sophomore, has shown great improvement since his freshman campaign.

“It’s obvious that he’s spent a lot of time working on his game. He really impressed me with his play in the summer leagues.”

An intriguing newcomer is 6-4 senior forward Tyler Davis, who is in his first year with the Lancers.

“He’s 6-4, strong and can run like a deer,” Hermreck said. “With him and Brock, we have a couple of kids with good size.”

Senior Clayton Miller, a standout for Crest on the football field, also is taking up basketball.

“He brings a linebacker’s skills to the court,” Hermreck joked. “He should be good for us inside.”

Kellen Ramsey, sophomore, will provide depth up front. Brandon Brallier also has shown the potential to challenge for playing time at guard.

“We don’t necessarily have our starting lineup yet, but we have several guys who can step up and earn playing time,” Hermreck said.

He sees teams such as Chetopa, Oswego and Uniontown as front-runners for the Three Rivers League title.

lenge them remains to be seen, although Hermreck likes the Lancers’ chances.

“I don’t know when, whether it’s immediately or not until February or March, but we’re going to be good at some point,” he said. “It’s going to take us a while to mesh together, but we’ll be pretty good when we do.”

Hermreck noted Crest’s ongoing success is a testament to the young players’ willingness to develop on and off the court.

“We really have a nice program going here,” he said. “The middle school kids come to practice just to watch, and they in turn work hard to get better so they can step in when they get to this level. It’s the best thing as a coach to have kids as driven as I do. I just let the wheels roll.”

Crest travels to Southern Coffey County Thursday.

Crest blends young, old for 2013-14 campaign COLONY —The numbers are low, but hopes are high for Crest High’s Lady Lancers.

Second-year head coach Ben Vaughn heads a squad featuring 11 players, and only one senior — Emily Frank, who missed the 201213 season because of injury.

Still, Vaughn is optimistic.

“Getting Emily back is big for us,” Vaughn said. “She is going to help us a lot with her leadership and her ability. She’s a solid shooter, and having her at guard will open things inside for us.”

The Lady Lancers return two starters from last year’s three-win squad.

Juniors Emmalee Seabolt and Madison Covey offer experience inside and outside, respectively.

“Emmalee is a good, tough player who saw a lot of time as a sophomore,” Vaughn said. “Madison was a point guard last season, but we may move her around this year in order to get her more chances to score.”

Sophomores Lupita Rodriguez and Maya Piper also may be called upon if needed, although they’ll have plenty of competition from Crest’s loaded freshman class.

Nearly half the team — five of the 11 — are ninthgraders this season.

But this isn’t your ordinary freshman class, Vaughn said.

“These girls experienced plenty of success last year at the middle school level,” he noted.

While that won’t necessarily translate into high school success — particularly at the varsity level — Vaughn is encouraged.

“They’re a confident

group who has demonstrated an ability to work well together,” he said.

Karlee Hammond, Laurel Godderz, Miranda Golden, Taryn Covey and Clarissa Pulley all starred for the Lady Lancers at the middle school level.

They’ll push the upperclassmen for playing time, Vaughn said.

Early indications are the

players have adapted well to each other.

“All of the kids are challenging each other to get better, and they’ve responded well to those challenges,” he said.

The Three Rivers League race promises to be competitive.

“Jayhawk-Linn has been pretty good for a while, and St. Paul should be tough,” he

said. “Then you have teams like Oswego that are usually talented. I think we can be competitive, although our experience level isn’t the highest.”

Crest travels to Southern Coffey County Thursday before heading to Humboldt Dec. 5 to begin a preseason tournament there.

Mustangs hit mats, take aim at state tourney Iola High’s wrestling program reached new heights to cap the 2012-13 season.

The school qualified three wrestlers to the Class 4A State Tournament, including Stephen McDonald, whose runner-up finish provided Iola’s first-ever individual state medal.

Only one of the three state qualifiers returns this season. McDonald has graduated, while junior Trey Colborn has moved to Erie.

That leaves senior Bryce Misenhelter to headline Iola’s wrestling contingent for the 2013-14 season, with an intriguing “old” newcomer also in the mix.

Senior Mike Armstrong qualified for the state tournament as a freshman. He wrestled briefly in his sophomore season and did not go out as a junior.

But he returns to wrestle at the 138-pound division.

“I really like what I see from Armstrong,” said IHS wrestling coach Brad Carson. “He’s been working hard, and he has shown a lot of ability. He’s doing a great job of working with our freshmen as well.”

Misenhelter will wrestle again at 182 pounds, Carson said, where he thrived last year.

Misenhelter went 31-14 and led IHS in victories.

Misenhelter easily led the Mustangs in reversals, 32.

“He is especially good at starting on bottom,” Carson said. “And not only is good at escapes, but he can continue those motions to get behind his opponent.”

Misenhelter also led Iola in three-point near falls (30) and two-point near falls (23) in his 45 matches.

“Bryce isn’t the most vocal leader, but he is a great leader by example,” Carson said. “He never missed a day of weight training over the summer. And even during football season, you could tell what kind of teammate he is.

He injured his ankle prior to our season opener, and he never missed a game.”

Senior Cody Conner also has proven to be a valuable member of the team.

As a junior, Conner rang up a 26-14 record, winning a team-high 24 by pins. He also led the Mustangs in takedowns with 39.

“Cody is very tough on his feet,” Carson said. “He has a couple of moves he’s very effective with.”

Sophomore Andrew Garber, who wrestled at 170 pounds as a freshman, is moving up to 195 pounds this season.

“He’s another kid who has made it to every practice in the offseason and gotten a lot stronger,” Carson said. “He looks like he can do everything at this level as he did last year.”

THE MUSTANGS have several other options at the heavier weights, although they remain light — no pun intended — at the lower weight levels. Iola has no wrestlers below 138 pounds.

“That’s tough for us at dual meets, because we have five weight classes with nobody available,” Carson said.

“We could conceivably be

trailing another team 30-0 before our first wrestler gets to the mat.”

But Iola will have somebody at every division above 138.

Senior John Whitworth will wrestle at 152 or 160 pounds.

“He’s strong and athletic enough to really do well,” Carson said.

Senior Travis Rieske also will wrestle at 152 pounds.

“He’s worked hard.”

Junior Jordan Long will compete at 170 pounds, while classmate Logan Roettgen is available at 152 or 160 pounds.

Meanwhile, a large number of freshmen will provide depth up and down the board.

“We have a lot of kids who just need experience,” Carson said.

“We have Brodey Silcox (152 or 160 pounds), Dakota Casteel (160 or 170) and Nate Evans. They’re what I call ‘tweeners’ trying to find the weight that works best for them.”

of experience already. He’s quick and athletic.”

Seth Sanford, 220-pound freshman, has shown promise, as has ninth-grader Colton Toney at 285 pounds.

“With Colton, we’re not sure how much wrestling he’ll do at the varsity level,” Carson said. “We don’t want to expose him to a lot of older, bigger kids. Sometimes, the best way a wrestler develops is to compete against kids his own age and skill level.”

Yates Center has no 'shortage' of talent YATES CENTER — Things are looking up — literally — for Yates Center High’s boys on the basketball court this winter.

The Wildcats return several key contributors, including four players 6-3 or taller, under first-year head coach Eric Busteed.

Busteed is familiar with the Wildcat roster. He was Yates Center’s head football coach in 2012 and assistant football coach this fall as the Wildcats made it to the second round of the state playoffs.

“Actually, I prefer coaching basketball,” said Busteed. “This was what I wanted when I came here.”

When Kevin Brown resigned his coaching post to take the helm at Colby High School in western Kansas, Busteed was chosen to take the reins.

The Wildcats feature seven returning lettermen, among nine kids who saw varsity experience last year.

“That’s our strength,” Busteed said. “We don’t have one player who has to be our ‘go-to guy.’ We have a bunch of players who can give us six, eight, 10 points a game if we need them to.”

“He’s a strong kid who plays hard, and does everything we tell him to,” Busteed said. “He’s never been a high scorer, but he’s one who will fight for rebounds and give us six to eight points a

game.”

He’ll be joined inside by 6-2 senior forward Robert Arnold.

“Robert has a nice midrange jump shot,” Busteed said. “Having him there really helps our high post presence.”

Guards Caleb DeNoon and Austin McNett will man the guard positions. Both were standouts on the football field for Yates Center and have quickly taken leadership roles on the basketball court.

“Caleb will be our 2-3 guard,” Busteed said. “He’s quick and he can shoot. Austin is a great defender and rebounder. He’s very strong with the ball.”

Junior Justin Rossillon will handle point guard duties.

“He’s another one who

can shoot, but he likes to distribute the ball to others as well,” Busteed said.

Yates Center’s team dynamics may change with the addition of two newcomers, both juniors.

Kal Hamm, a 6-5 post player, brings a tremendous amount of athleticism.

“He does a good job of getting on the blocks, and fighting for position,” Busteed said. “He’s great around the basket, and make the 8- to 10foot jumper. He adds a lot to the team.”

As does junior wing Drake Busteed, Coach Busteed’s son.

“He’s going to be a big asset offensively,” Coach Busteed said. “He’s a natural shooter who may be our best shooter. He just figures out a way to score. He can play the 2- or 3-guard position.”

The Wildcats lost one valuable offensive performer when Cameron Brown moved with his father to Colby.

“Cameron was a great player for us last year, and we’re going to miss what he brought to the court,” Busteed said.

“But we have a lot of solid players who I think can be successful as a team once we come together.”

Busteed said Eureka looks to be the team to beat in TriValley League play.

“They bring everybody back,” he noted. “Humboldt did lose a lot, but they have a lot of great players coming back, too. They’re always going to be solid and competitive.”

Erie, Cherryvale, Caney Valley and Burlington likely will be tough contenders, he said.

YC girls look to step up quickly to fill holes YATES CENTER — In Chris Wells’ first season at the helm at Yates Center High, the Wildcats were more than willing to deploy an aggressive, physical defense so that it would pay off with quick scoring opportunities.

That strategy may change a bit in 2013-14, Wells said.

“We’re really going to have take it game by game,” Wells said. “There are teams we might be able to do that against, but with our numbers, we have to be concerned with foul trouble.”

The Wildcats lost three starters from last year’s 8-13 squad that advanced to the second round of the Class 2A substate tournament.

“With those three starters, we lost more than 50 percent of our scoring,” Wells noted. “So we know some girls are going to have to step up quickly.”

And while the Wildcats have some key pieces in place for a successful run through the Tri-Valley League, depth will be an issue. Yates Center’s roster has only 11 girls.

“It’s only down one player from last year, but that one player can be big,” Wells noted.

Two starters will be counted on to lead the way.

Senior guard Mindi Holloway — Yates Center’s defensive catalyst in years past — will be expected to do the same, but with a larger eye toward scoring.

Holloway averaged more than 4 steals per contest in 2012-13, “and we didn’t count her pass deflections,” Wells said.

Holloway was tabbed as Yates Center’s defensive player of the year last season.

new roles this season,” Wells said. “That was the first thing we talked about.”

Even while not focusing much on offense, Holloway still averaged more than six points a game.

Shayna Karmann, a junior guard/forward, also started last season, and will aid the Wildcats with her shooting.

“Shayna is very fundamentally sound,” Wells said.

“She showed up nearly every day for weightlifting, and always took time to work on her shooting. I think she’s going to surprise some people with her shot.”

Karmann also stepped up and assumed a leadership position at the end of last season.

“She has a ton of heart, who goes hard every day,” Wells said. “We’re really counting on her and Mindi to provide leadership for the rest of the team, and they’ve already started doing that.”

A third returning starter, Becky Wendland, remains hobbled by an ankle injury she suffered in the fall golf season. She has only recently been released to start practicing on a limited basis.

“We look for her to return in early December, but she realizes she’s going to have to battle to get a starting slot because some other girls have really stepped up in practice,” Wells said. “She’s at practice every day, but really can’t do much while in terms of team play while she recovers.”

A handful of players from Yates Center’s crop of underclassmen also have caught Wells’ eye.

Sophomore Jessica Rossillon continues to impress.

She earned extended minutes at the end of her freshman campaign.

Aubrey Smith, a junior, was a key reserve player for the Wildcats last year.

“She does a lot of things well,” Wells said. “She’s another girl we’re going to count on to take more of an initiative to score.”

Incoming freshman Emily Proper, a standout at the middle school level, may also find herself in the playing rotation sooner rather than later.

“Last year, we had the personnel to run for days,” Wells said. “We still have quality players, but without the depth, there may be times that we slow things down. We’ve stressed the im-

portance of valuing possessions.”

Wells foresees a competitive Tri-Valley League race.

Burlington is the reigning Class 3A state champion, but also must replace its entire starting lineup. Caney Valley also returns plenty of firepower, as does Cherryvale. Squads like Fredonia and Humboldt also are capable of surprising people, Wells said.

“I think this is going to be a very good year for the league,” he said. “Every team looks like it has some talent. There won’t be any games you can consider a walk in the park.”

SCC girls eye another state berth LE ROY — A trio of seniors must lead the way if Southern Coffey County High’s girls can hope for a repeat to the state playoffs.

Fresh off their 9-14 season that ended at the hands of eventual Class 1A state champion Ingalls, the Lady Titans return six players who saw varsity experience in 2012-13.

Leading the way are senior 6-0 post player Breanna Isch and guards Miranda Alumbaugh and Chenae Newkirk.

“The three seniors will give us excellent leadership,” Lady Titan head coach Jeff True said. “All three put in plenty of varsity time and know what it takes to improve each day. They have an excellent work ethic. Bre will give us an inside presence, while Chenae and Miranda give us experience at the guards.”

A pair of juniors also will be counted on this year.

With only 14 players on the roster, depth will be an issue, he noted.

Three sophomores, Kalyn Deal, Amber Emmons and Maycee Hegwald, will need to jump in quickly, he said.

Six freshmen round out the roster.

“We will be looking to some underclassmen to step up this season,” True said.

‘We have to get better every day. We have to work hard to get better fundamentally at dribbling, passing and shooting. It will also take a strong team effort to stop teams defensively.”

The work ethic is vital to being competitive in the Lyon County League, True said.

With SCC’s lack of depth, staying healthy will be crucial for the Lady Titans’ hopes to improve on a daily basis.

WHEN CARLSON met with her players prior to practice this fall, she handed each a slip of paper that said simply, “1-19.

What are you going to do to change that?”

The message was received loud and clear.

“The girls look like they’re in better shape, and they expect to win,” Carlson said. “So do I. I’m going to be disappointed if we don’t do better than we did last year.

“With the depth we have, we should be able to bring players off the bench and not worry about our level of play dropping,” Carlson said. “We have a lot of interchangeable players, each with her own skill set.

“Last year, we really had to put those girls in the fire against a very tough schedule early on,” she continued. “The girls were good, but they were put in a situation they weren’t ready for. I think they’re ready for it this season.

These kids are good athletes, but they’re good students, too. Our team GPA is very high. Our girls are conscientious, and they care about what they do and how well they do on the court.”

As for the Pioneer League, Carlson said Anderson County will be tough.

“Everybody is good in our league,” Carlson said, “but I could see us up there at the top, too.”

Iola opens the regular season Friday at home against Girard. The Fillies will be in Baldwin the following week for a preseason tournament.

Titan cagers hit the court LE ROY — A talented batch of returning players will be pivotal if Southern Coffey County High is to succeed on the basketball court this winter.

Leading the way for the Titans (5-15 in 2012-13) are senior guards Aaron True (62) and Chism Newkirk at 5-7, senior forward Angus Nelson (6-2) and junior forwards Walker Harred (5-10) and Josiah Witteman (6-1).

Those five also comprised the Titans’ starting lineup last season.

“We have a good group of returning players who all have some varsity experience,” said Brandt Miller, entering his 16th season as head coach for SCC. “They have all worked hard this summer to become a better team. They are all very selfless players who enjoy the game of basketball. We are very excited and looking forward to competing.”

True, 6-2, earned all Lyon County League honorable mention recognition for his play last season.

Tyler Houston, a 6-2 guard and forward, started sporadically last season as well.

Santa Fe Trail, another Division II school, will join the Pioneer League in 201415.

Several upperclassmen also should fill in supporting rolls. Kaden Macha stepped up in several occasions as a sophomore last year. The 6-2 junior plays forward, as does 6-1 senior Fryendz Wallace.

“Kaden really progressed nicely last season, and he’s versatile in that he can play inside or outside,” Peeper said. “Fryendz has impressed me with how much he’s improved, and Adam Peterson has really grown a lot.”

Seniors Bryan Mueller and Jesse Zimmerman also are capable of lining up at guard or forward and will provide some depth.

Junior guards Kohl Endicott, Travis Hermstein and Alex Kelly will be looked on to help on the outside. Junior forward Grant DeLaCruz offers help inside.

“As a group, these kids have a ton of potential,” Peeper said. “We don’t have a bad athlete in the bunch.

We’ve made progress in my three years here, but we’re not at the level we want to be yet. Our key word this season is ‘relentless.’ We want to be relentless on defense and in our work to improve.”

There was one setback in the preseason.

Junior guard Shane Walden will miss the upcoming season due to a shoulder injury.

“That hurts because he was really starting to come on,” Peeper said.

WELLSVILLE looks to be a standard bearer for the Pioneer League this season, while Anderson County traditionally has a strong team. Central Heights and Prairie View also have a number of athletes.

“I think people see how successful we’ve been in football in the Pioneer League, but they don’t realize how hard this football team has had to work to get there,” Peeper said.

“There’s a lot of talent in this league.”
