H Ants, Roaches, Spiders John Smith got his start as a locksmith in much the same manner as others may have found their calling — in high school. “Someone would always be getting locked out of their car. I’d be the one they’d call,” he said. Of course in those days, that usually meant using little more than a coat hanger, noted Smith. “Today’s vehicles are a bit more secure,” said Smith, who now specializes on locks for commercial and residential structures, electronic and swipe card locks and creating specialized keys for such things as curio cabinets. Even with his ability to enter locked vehicles, Smith didn’t immediately pursue a career as a locksmith. But when he started managing motels with his wife, Mary, one of the necessities was fixing an occasional broken lock. “I’d been working with locks and keys for 50 years without actually being a certified locksmith,” he said. That changed in December 2003, when Smith decided to open John’s Lock and Key. He completed what normally would have been a sixmonth course in 30 days to earn his locksmith certification. “Most of the newer vehicles were designed to keep people like me out,” Smith said with a laugh. “So if I get a call to open a car door, the first question I ask is the model and year of the car.” And while the technology for electronic locks has been around for decades, the newest advances are built for added security and convenience, Smith said. It’s his responsibility to remain at the forefront. For example, some locks will disengage through help with a fingerprint scanner. Others can be turned on and off via remote control. “There’s always something new coming along,” he said.

Dudley’s Done Right Bar-B-Q Marshall Barnhart, owner/operator of Dudley’s Done Right Bar-B-Q, started his BBQ business years ago serving at small private parties and gatherings. But he always dreamed of owning his own restaurant. The next step he and his wife Jacie took was to open a BBQ-to-go trailer. He built it from scratch, pulled it to different locations and soon became a popular destination for local, as well as passer-by customers. In October 2010, he realized his dream by setting up shop at 315 N. State with regular weekly hours for customers to stop by and pick up mouth watering, freshly smoked BBQ brisket-pulled porkpit potatoes and a variety of other meats and sides to go. At 10 a.m., he starts serving BBQ for lunch and dinner and will close when he’s sold out! Marshall also sells his BBQ sauce. C.L. focused mainly on service and Craig on deliveries of new and used appliances and Thurman on service and store operations. In 2006 LG (Life’s Good) televisions were added to the lineup. Also, we service all LG TVs bought from us. Electrolux and Frigidaire appliances were added to the mix in 2007. Everything is available from entryline models, to the newest, latest features in dishwashers, laundry, refrigerators and ranges. Even other brand names are available by special order. Lone Pine Hunting Preserve is owned by Mike and Beth Hamman, pictured. Located 10 miles west of Yates Center, the hunting preserve provides many opportunities to hunt — upland hunting for pheasant, quail and chukar; turkey hunting in season and deer hunting in season. The upland season runs from September 1 through March 31. There are no bag limits, hunters pay for the birds they want to have released and the harvested birds are dressed and packaged free of charge. No membership fees or any other charges. Rifle season for deer begins in December and turkey season is in the spring. Group field hunt packages and European pheasant harvests are also available. Upcoming European pheasant harvest dates are: Friday, November 23 - 10 a.m. s Saturday, November 24 - 10 a.m. ation v r e Tuesday, January 1, 2012 - 1 p.m. Res quired Re March 2013 - TBA A large part of the business is raising pheasants and supplying them to other hunting preserves — about 16,000 each year. Bolling’s Meat Market

A Retail Branch of Moran Locker Celebrating two years of bringing Moran Locker quality to Iola.

Phone (620) 237-4331

Moran Locker Pictured at Moran Locker are owners and operators Mitch and Sharon Bolling. Also employeed are Laurie Barney, Donald Dickson, Kevin Son and Tamaca Houk. We buy from local growers that we are very familiar with who raise their animals with care to be the size and quality we want and there’s no doubt what sort of feed went into the animal. No old, poorly fed and poorly cared for animals will ever be retailed by Moran Locker or Bolling’s Meat Market. No locker can make good meat from poor animals. We’re convinced that our retail meats will be the best you’ve ever eaten. Locally raised and processed meat is the best. You are able to buy whole and halves (beef or hogs), and quarters (beef only). Moran Locker also sells products by the individual package to fit a person’s budget, family size and preference; ranging from smoked turkeys to patties; meat bundles where you choose which cuts you want; pork sausage, bratwursts, Cajun and Italian sausages and sausage links, plus a great variety of steaks. We also offer shrimp, boneless and bone-in buffalo style hot wings, onion rings and a large variety of seasonings and spices. Raising your own meat and ready for a local meat locker that offers custom meat processing? Call ahead and make an appointment or stop by for a visit and see first-hand the cleanliness and expertise of our state-inspected facility. Our top priority is food safety for the welfare of our customers. Our longevity speaks for itself: we have 3rd and 4th generations at work in our family operations. Let us visit about how your animal will be cut up, how large the finished packages of meat will be and any instructions for smoking, trimming, sausage making and other special orders. Some owners may be concerned that once the animal is unloaded and leaves their sight, there’s no way to tell if the packaged meat that is returned to them came from the actual animal. Our meat is tagged as soon as it is killed. It follows the meat through the entire process. There’s no way of getting mixed up. We process one animal at a time. Our deer processing is all done under the same strict standards as domestic livestock. We offer deer sticks, deer brats, summer sausage, jerky and jalapeno and cheddar summer sausage. All our custom processing is cut the way you request and double-wrapped. We extend a big thanks to all our past, present and future customers.

Pictured at Bolling’s Meat Market are, front from left, Cara Bolling and Deb David, back from left, Josh Jones, Mike Luken and Jim Hargrove. At Bolling’s Meat Market in Iola we offer fresh cut steaks, ground beef, cuts of pork, our homemade brats and sausages, the hot dogs that everybody loves and much more. Plus the Moran Locker beef and pork patties that are so tender because we do not machine press them. And don’t forget whole chickens and boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Both Moran Locker and Bolling’s Meat Market are family owned and operated by 3rd and 4th generation meat processors. For the upcoming holiday season, Bolling’s Meat Market will be offering holiday smoked turkeys, traditional holiday hams, boneless pit hams and prime ribs. We will also be carrying specialty items for the holidays such as king crab, jumbo shrimp and lobster tails. We will be cutting crown roasts of beef and pork on request. Gift baskets, made to your order, and spiral cut brown sugar/maple-glazed hams are new for this holiday season. A variety of lamb cuts will also be available. Pre-orders are strongly encouraged for all holiday items. Our deli case features 18 deli meats and 12 deli cheeses, sliced and packaged to your order. For your convenience and to complement your meal, we carry tomatoes, lettuce, milk, onions, potatoes, buns, salad mix, eggs, Olive Garden breadsticks, Cheddar Bay biscuits and more. Bolling’s Meat Market is open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays with the quality you expect and the prices you deserve.

The philosophy at Minor Chiropractic is: Pain is just a signal, like the sound of a fire alarm. Putting out the fire is more important than just turning off the alarm. Taking medications to simply turn off spinal pain is an unwise substitute for actually extinguishing the root cause of the problem. Services offered in the office include: Xrays, physical therapy and rehabilitation, as well as head to toe adjustments for children and adults that are safe and effective for the treatment of headaches, back pain and numerous other aches and pains. In 1991, he purchased the Iola practice of Dr. Thomas Bumgardner. Dr. Smith provides comprehensive eye examinations, foreign body removal and treatment of eye diseases. The ophthalmology services of Dr. Michael Reynolds and Dr. Wayne Anliker are also available in the Iola office. Both offices are equipped with a full line of contact lenses, eyeglasses and accessories to meet all your eye care needs. We are now participating in several insurance plans including VSP, Superior Vision, Preferred Health Systems, Coventry and Humana Comp Benefits. Dr. Smith attends seminars and educational meetings throughout the year to stay abreast of the changes and trends in eye care. Staff meetings are held quarterly with representatives from the ophthalmic industry to keep informed of new products and styles. Dr. Smith and staff would once again like to thank their patients for their past patronage and let them know they are here to meet their eye care needs. Office hours for both offices are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5:30 p.m., although the Humboldt office is now closed on Wednesday afternoons. T&E credits Iola Industries and the Iola manufacturing firms for their success Trial and Error was a good name for their business when they started it in 1973. The first pallet was nailed together in the garage of owners Jerry and Carolyn Haen for Walton Foundry 39 years ago. They knew nothing about the business and had to feel their way along. That’s how they came up with the name of the firm. The company occupies a huge concrete and sheet metal building on the former Lehigh Cement Plant site that Iola Industries, Inc. bought when Lehigh ceased operations. The building had been used for clinker storage. Today it is full of completed pallets, crates, cable reels and the T&E crew busy filling orders for the industries in Iola which provide the base for its production as well as other companies throughout Southeast Kansas. “T&E owes its existence to the industries of Iola,” Haen said. “We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Iola Industries, a special thanks to them for all their help in giving us an opportunity to succeed.”

Like many of the businesses featured in our annual Business, Professional and Industrial Publication, The Iola Register is a family thing. “It’s an honor to be a fourth-generation publisher,”

said Susan Lynn, editor and publisher. Since 1882, Charles F. Scott and his descendants have wrapped their lives around serving this community. With this honor comes the respon-

sibility of maintaining a tradition of excellence. The Register strives to be an accurate recorder of today’s news, from world events to your child’s first birthday party.

At this time, I personally thank each and every subscriber and advertiser for your interest in and support of The Iola Register. It is our privilege to serve you. For all your printing needs call Iola Register Printing at (620) 365-5861
