“Wicklow Connections” Photo Competition Outdoor Movies @ The Cove: Airplane! (USA 1980/PG/89mins) | Date: Saturday 11th August | Time: 22:00 | Tickets: €5 | Screening Greystones Film Club and The Whale Theatre More than simply a spoof of the disaster movie genre, Airplane! sent up cinema itself, breaking through the fourth wall whilst basically breaking wind in the general direction of Hollywood. Casting former matinee idols Leslie Nielsen as the hapless Dr Rumack and Lloyd Bridges as the increasingly toasted airport chief Steve McCroskey were just two of the inspired casting choices here.

Bottom line, this is one of the funniest films ever made and where better to see it than on a beach in Greystones, at night. Just the way Groucho would have wanted it.

Wicklow Uplands Council has announced a Photo Competition titled ‘Wicklow Connections’, which has a number of prizes to be awarded including €500 in cash along with the winning entries forming part of an exhibition to be held in August.

Under the theme ‘A Celebration of the Cultural Heritage of County Wicklow’, the aim of the photographic competition is to acknowledge and celebrate the rich and diverse cultural heritage found throughout County Wicklow.

Wicklow Uplands Council invites you to submit photos, which depict aspects of Wicklow’s varied Cultural Heritage.

It might be of the stunning landscape, a town or village scene, people at work or play in the landscape, a building, an archaeological site or monument, an activity associated with Wicklow - Essentially ‘your connection’ with Co Wicklow.

Entrants are also encouraged to provide a short caption (60 words max), which provides some insight into the story behind the image.

Entries to the competition will be selected to form an exhibition on the cultural heritage theme ‘Wicklow Connections’ which will be launched at The Brockagh Resource Centre for National Heritage Week 2018 (www.heritageweek.ie ).

Dublin Horse Show

28 JULY, 2018, Monastery Cross, Enniskerry, Co Wicklow Run entirely by volunteers, the Kilmacanogue Horse Show is all about supporting our local community and all proceeds are awarded to local charities.

The annual Kilmacanogue Horse Show attracts many visitors and well over 500 competitors (horses, ponies, dogs, sheep and their owners of all ages) every year. It is a favourite day out for families where children are guaranteed to be captivated for hours.

Many children swear that the Kilmacanogue Horse Show is the highlight of their summer as they experience all the hard work and attention-to-detail involved in being ‘at their best’ for competition.

Besides the ponies, horses and sheep there is plenty to keep everyone busy including the very popular dog show, pony rides, ‘guess the weight of the lamb’ and art competitions. There are delicious locally grown raspberries to enjoy with ice-cream, craft stalls to browse and find bargains at, food and trade stands including demonstrations on health and safety and a farrier at work.

This is the 140th year of The Wicklow Regatta and this year’s festival promises to be another great week of music, fun, sport and entertainment for the whole community up to and including the Bank Holiday weekend. This year the Festival will kick off with a guided tour of Altidore Castle Wednesday 1st August and will end with the hugely popular Roundwood Street Festival Day on Sunday 5th of August. As arrangements fall into place we will update our website www. roundwood.ie and our Facebook page, so please check back for updates as we near the kick off date.

One of the highlights of the Roundwood Festival is the canoe race on the Upper Vartry Reservoir.

Registration for the race is at 4:30pm on Saturday 5th of August at the Upper Vartry Dam (beside the Wicklow Angler’s boats). The competition is open to all swimmers aged of 13 or over. This year the competition has a special veteran class and rumour has it that there is serious training going on and an upsurge in the sale of rowing machines in the area!

If taking to the water isn’t your cup of tea then come over to cheer on the rest. There is ample parking at the Roundwood AFC football pitch or take a walk from the village on the recently resurfaced trail from Water’s Bridge on the Newtown Road.
