Deardelegates,
Welcome to the International Conference INVTUR 2024! The conference is hosted by the University of Aveiro and is now in its 6th edition, organised in collaboration with several foreign partner universities. During the pandemic, the conference was postponed for one year and was finally organised online in 2021. It is now a great pleasure to return to face-to-face events. The theme of this year's edition is "Tourism in unprecedented times: Searching for new ways".
Tourism has always been a catalyst for peace, change and sustainable development. However, approaches to tourism have changed drastically over the years. As we enter a new era, our world faces unprecedented challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, the emergence of disruptive technologies and increasing digitalisation, the war in Ukraine and the Middle East, the global energy crisis and rampant inflation are profoundly changing the pace of development in the world and drastically impacting the tourism sector. The INVTUR 2024 International Conference aims to reflect on how the world is changing and to advance approaches and techniques for the dynamic evolution and development of tourism.
The conference is organised in 4 plenary sessions with 6 keynote speakers and 76 parallel sessions with a total of 272 presentations, offering a wide range of topics to choose from. Three hundred and seventy-two papers (372) have been submitted, involving a total of 473 authors from 24 countries.
All papers will be published in the INVTUR Conference Proceedings. In addition to the proceedings, a special issue of the 'Journal of Tourism and Development' ('Revista Turismo & Desenvolvimento') will publish a group of high-quality papers that will be double-blind reviewed and recommended for publication by the Scientific Committee of the INVTUR International Conference.
INVTUR 2024 aims to provide an interactive, dynamic and international platform for academics and practitioners to discuss how to improve research applications and knowledge management through partnerships. In addition to the academic conference, this year's edition includes two other parallel conferences open to all delegates. The First Forum of the Tourism Platform of Portugal will take place during the whole day of the 9th of May and will provide a meeting point where academics, tourism companies and organisations will discuss the future of tourism in Portugal. The Portuguese Tourism Platform includes 125 founding members, comprising all Portuguese universities with tourism programmes, all full professors in tourism, the most important tourism researchers in the country, as well as the most important national, regional and local tourism organisations. During the morning of the 9th of May, it will also take place the conference “Tourism, Development and International Relations: Exploring New Directions in the Far East”. The panel includes the Ambassador of the Philippines and the Director-General of Japan National Tourism Organisation, alongside academics of the University of Aveiro.
INVTUR 2024 boosts discussions between tourism businesses and organisations with the aim of bridging the gap between academics and practitioners. Participants will have the opportunity to strengthen partnerships with various stakeholders, including academic researchers, industry professionals and government agencies, through dialogues on how to better use research results for the benefit of the industry.
INVTUR 2024 would not have been possible without the involvement, participation and encouragement of many colleagues from around the world. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the keynote speakers, session organisers, scientific committee and reviewers of the conference. Without all of you, this conference would not have been possible. We would also like to thank the Organising Committee for their valuable and enormous work. Our special thanks go to Filipa Brandão, Rui Costa, Zélia Breda. We would also like to thank the new generation responsible for organising this year's edition, with special reference to Mariana Martins, Vítor Rodrigues, Ana Maria Malta, Silvana Serrão and Rogelio Flores - this new generation has brought new energy to the conference and their work is highly appreciated!
Our special thanks also go to all the participants for being here with us in Aveiro!
We wish you all a pleasant and memorable stay in Aveiro!!
