The EAC CAVE is a 26 projector high-resolution device supporting interactive immersive applications such as high-fidelity simulations of phenomena, immersive education and training scenarios, or exploration of geophysical survey data. A unique device in the State of Arkansas, it is accessible and available for strategic collaborations.

Chairmen Melanie and Matt Buchanan welcomed more than 400 guests to this annual Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Horseracing-themed party. Participating event sponsors acted as jockeys (with wooden horse in tow) in mock races. This fun and festive “evening at the races” generated $159,000 in support for Methodist Family Health. Methodist Family Health is the only nonprofit organization that offers comprehensive behavioral healthcare for children and families in Arkansas.

Fellow Arkansans – neighbors, colleagues and friends - are sharing a light of peace, kindness and generosity that makes The Natural State a little brighter. Inviting Arkansas and Methodist Family Health celebrate individuals who illuminate our community with goodness. Nominate someone today for a future feature that SHINES.

Given her calling and experience, one might expect Rev. Samantha Meadors to have a strong faith. As the leader of Project Transformation Arkansas, she has something more: a plan.

Sam is executive director of the statewide chapter, but its legacy of transforming lives through leadership development and community-focused programming for youth is more than two decades strong.

Founded in 2021, Project Transformation Arkansas has served families – working independently in partnership with the Arkansas Conference of the United Methodist Church – by offering affordable summer day camps. The mission fulfillment work is implemented from Jefferson County where Sam is the visionary. She quickly realized a critical moment and was called to action. “Coming out of COVID, the need for affordable summer day camps and childcare options for school-aged children became more apparent than ever.” She elaborates, “Our mission is to transform communities by engaging children, college-aged young adults and churches in purposeful relationships. So, for our community, this is where the need lies, and this is where we can – hopefully – have an impact.”

According to Sam, the average cost per student is $1,000. “For families with more than one child, the costs can prove practically impossible,” she adds. “That’s where we try to help.”

Enrollment for Project Transformation summer day camp is open to qualifying elementary school students; the cost is $20 per student or $50 per family for an eight-week, inclusive summer program. The camp is hosted four days per week with breakfast and lunch included.

“Although we are guided as a faithbased organization, it is foremost in our minds that we are creating an open and inviting atmosphere that is respectful of all beliefs and cultures in order to serve the entire community and not just the church community.” That is why, in part, Sam says literacy is a primary component of the curriculum. “Generally, there is a shift that occurs around the thirdgrade level, up to which point most students have been learning to read,” explains Sam. “Beyond that stage, they begin reading to learn. That is why it is so important that children develop the skills and confidence to become lifelong readers and learners.”

Since its inception, Project Transformation Arkansas has demonstrated impressive growth which Sam hopes will result in expansion to include more areas of the state, including the Capital City. She notes that volunteers play a fundamental role in the success of the program; opportunities include partnering individually with students as a reading buddy or reading aloud to groups of students.

Chairman Yvette Parker welcomed friends and supporters of Potluck Food Rescue for Arkansas to The Rail Yard for this bigger + better fundraiser. Located at 4300 Markham Street across from the Little Rock campus of the University ofArkansas for Medical Sciences, Home for Healing offers free lodging to parents of NICU infants, cancer patients + their caregivers, and caregivers of ICU patients. Now, Home for Healing welcomes adult cancer patients from UAMS, Baptist Health, CHI ST Vincent, Arkansas Urology and teenagers from Arkansas Children’s. Since its inception in 2003, the peaceful and restorative environment makes it a beacon of hope during a journey back to wellness. The UAMS Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was instrumental in the inception of Home for Healing and will be recognized with the Heart of the Home Award at Monster Bash later this month.

Neonatologist & Professor of Pediatrics, Dr. Richard “Whit” Hall and his team in the neonatal unit are deeply devoted to the families and babies. He recognizes Home for Healing as a safe haven for families during a most difficult time. The conditions of NICU babies can change rapidly, causing emotional and mental strain on parents. “This is a highly unusual situation for a mother to have a baby in the intensive care unit. It’s extremely stressful, we need to keep families and babies together. Having family close by is important for so many reasons.”

Home for Healing serves as a sanctuary that nurtures hope, courage and resilience. Karsyn Wilbur, from Magnolia, delivered her baby at only 30 weeks and remembers Home for Healing eliminated some of the stress with having her baby in the UAMS NICU by providing free lodging. “She was in the NICU for two months. When I got accepted to Home for Healing - I immediately had a safe space, right across the street from the hospital. I could look out my window and know my baby was right there.”

fulfillment work of Home for Healing. In addition to providing babies with unparalleled medical care, the UAMS NICU team volunteers for Home for Healing’s biggest fundraiser, Monster Bash. Monster Bash was imagined and brought to life by UAMS NICU staff, who had an idea for a Halloween-themed FUNdraiser and invited Home for Healing to collaborate. Home for Healing Executive Director Kristin Trulock reflects, “They had a vision 20 years ago to make Monster Bash the largest costume contest fundraiser in Arkansas.”

Rebecca Sartini joined UAMS as a NICU nurse and quickly realized the remarkable services that Home for Healing provides. “The staff truly shows compassion and caring for all that walk through the door. Providing a space for NICU families is invaluable to promoting support for a family being a family, without the exhausting trips back and forth from home, often many miles away across the state.” Kristin Trulock states, “We are so grateful for the continued support; the Heart of the Home Award is a small token of our appreciation.” Dr. Hall adds, “It means the world to us to be recognized for our work with Home for Healing by accepting the Heart of the Home award.”

FASHION an evening of INTERGALACTIC

ASHLEY BERMINGHAM EMBRACES a new perspective, “Why not expect the best and prepare for it too?” It’s a twist on a well-established adage, “expect the best, prepare for the worst” and reflects the resilient spirit of cancer survivors + beautiful new beginnings. Next month, Ashley will welcome guests to Festival of Fashion for an evening of intergalactic techno-color fabulous fashion. Proceeds support the CARTI Patient Assistance Program – providing resources that improve the physical, emotional and financial health of patients.

“This year, Festival of Fashion is all about new beginnings and transformation,” Ashley elaborates. “With the new surgery center and research-driven technology, it’s also about new frontiers.” CARTI is the largest, private cancer clinic in Arkansas and remains steadfast in its mission to make treatment available to as many Arkansans as possible. With its all-inclusive cancer center and statewide network of clinics that administer radiation + chemotherapy, CARTI serves 35,000 Arkansans annually. When faced with a cancer diagnosis, there’s also assured confidence that the patient will receive care that extends beyond the physical with special consideration to the emotional support. “New beginnings are all about the unknown and the team at CARTI helps families face the fears of cancer and find life as a survivor.”

It’s this compassionate care that CARTI offers during a family’s cancer journey that impresses Ashley. “Their passion for bringing the best medical care to every patient that comes through the doors of each CARTI location,18 throughout the state, is unparalleled by any cancer institution. It just feels different.” Education and research have evolved, but CARTI’s vision remains constant. CARTI Foundation Director Michaela Johnson adds, “Our Patient Assistance Program provides support such as transportation and lodging as well as financial,

emotional and nutritional counseling. It’s part of our commitment to provide comprehensive, complementary support services to eliminate barriers to treatment.”

A native Arkansan, Ashley recognizes the strong sense of community across the Natural State. “It seems like there’s always something to do and people go to great efforts to create a thriving social scene. We’re some of the most philanthropic folks around!” Festival of Fashion fills the niche with its fashion-forward appeal and New York Fashion Week-style runway show featuring 14 Central Arkansas boutiques + the season’s most stylish trends. “It’s awesome to see the stores supporting and helping one another with a common goal.” This year guarantees an evening of fashion that’s out of this world. Michaela notes the intergalactic theme reflects superstar volunteers as well as the glitter and glam that makes the holiday season special. “After all, the fight against cancer is universal and strong, like the galaxy - it’s fearless and never-ending. We’ll have guests dancing in their seats, enjoying the show and joining the force!”

Ashley remembers her grandmother who faced cancer gracefully at the end of her life. “She was such an inspiration – a savvy businesswoman, but also a wonderful wife and mother.” During one of their last visits, Ashley made her laugh and helped with her selfcare routine. She admits to making light of an awful situation. “Cancer doesn’t have to be sad all the time, people want to laugh and feel normal. That’s what CARTI is to me.” And in preparation for the fashion in a galaxy very far way – she adds, “I think most people would agree that miracles happen every day, so why can’t they happen to us? I fully believe that we attract what we think about into our lives. I’m so proud to be a part of an event that is truly making a difference in so many patients’ lives.”

Manage Your Breast Cancer Risk

For many women, breast cancer risk management will become a fact of life at some point in their lives, whether it’s with an annual mammogram after age 40 or with genetic testing due to a family history of breast cancer. But what some women may not know is that things like their race can factor into their risk – and may call for them to start managing their risk earlier in life.

Recent studies show that Black women and other minorities are at a higher risk for developing breast cancer than non-Hispanic white women. Prior to age 50, minority women are 127% more likely to die of breast cancer, 72% more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer and 58% more likely to be diagnosed with advanced-stage breast cancer.

The statistics may seem scary, but there are tools available to help patients manage their breast cancer risk. The American College of Radiology (ACR) recommends that all women – particularly Black women, as well as Ashkenazi Jewish women – have a risk assessment by age 25 to determine if screening prior to age 40 is necessary. Risk assessment can be as simple as a free online questionnaire designed to determine a person’s lifetime risk of developing breast cancer based on personal, family and genetic history. One of the most popular is the TyrerCuzick Risk Assessment Calculator. While questionnaires like this are not a replacement for discussing your risk with a primary care physician or gynecologist, they serve as a great starting point in the risk management journey.

At the Cancer Genetics and Risk Management Clinic at CARTI, patients can understand their risk for developing breast cancer through a thorough examination of their family history and other risk factors, followed by any testing or monitoring our team deems necessary.

Goodwill Industries of Arkansas Gala for Good

EVEN A BRIEF encounter with Cathy Tuggle reveals her can-do attitude and love for all things Arkansas. At Apartment Hunters, she stays busy helping people find the perfect home. Around the Capital City, Cathy is recognized as a civic leader who is fiercely committed to the mission of every organization, and there are many, she serves. It is this sincere support of community that makes her the ideal chairman for the inaugural Goodwill Industries of Arkansas Gala for Good.

Cathy was introduced to Goodwill Industries of Arkansas through CEO Brian Marsh. “I’ve known Brian for many years, and believe he knows I am passionate about bettering our city.” She quickly realized the scope of programs that Goodwill provides is remarkable. “It’s not only bettering Little Rock, but also doing great things in the entire state. I am grateful to Goodwill for providing my son a great career path by obtaining the knowledge through The Academy.”

Cathy and Paul, who were high school sweethearts, have been married for nearly three decades; their son experienced the organization’s trade school. “I’d mentioned to Brian that Weston needed to broaden his education or find a trade,” she reflects. “Brian invited us to tour The Academy and Weston became extremely interested in many of the courses and started with a welding class, which is also something his dad does. Paul is a residential contractor, master electrician, and a jack of all trades. Now, Weston and his dad can work together in our business.”

This singular example reflects one of the many lives transformed by Goodwill Industries of Arkansas. The Academy at Goodwill, licensed by the Arkansas State Board of Private Career Education, provides the training needed for career advancement. Each program offers opportunities for nontraditional students to earn credentials and certifications that lead to meaningful employment. Other resources include The Excel Center, Career Services and Reentry Services. Proceeds from Gala for Good support this mission to educate, train and employ Arkansans. THE ETERNAL CYCLE of destruction and rebirth is an apt one for the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center. As the museum reflects on the storied history, it is with reverence as the only black history institution in the state and of its kind in the south. Director Quantia “Key” Fletcher recognizes that with the 140 years in America and 15 years in the state comes a responsibility to share this collective history with all Arkansans. The extraordinary class of Trailblazers – a group of outstanding individuals –will be presented at the anniversary luncheon in December.

Quantia remembers when plans to restore the original 1913 grand temple were incinerated during a fire in 2005. The museum, which is in the exact location of the original temple, was reimagined as a state-of-the-art museum complex complete with exhibits, a classroom, administrative offices and an auditorium. “Our mission is to preserve, interpret and celebrate African American history and culture in Arkansas,” Key notes. “Here, you can learn about African America fraternal organizations and entrepreneurs as well as integration. But this museum isn’t just the story of African American Arkansans, it’s the story of how our history is woven into the tapestry of our nation’s narrative.”

As an anchor to Little Rock’s famed 9th Street Corridor, Mosaic Templars Cultural Center will celebrate its legacy of service with plans for a series of educational and innovative exhibits that illustrate the organization’s continued mission fulfillment work. “Earlier this year, we began by commemorating the 140th anniversary of the incorporation of Mosaic Templars of America, and we want to continue through the next year with a series of exhibits in our changing gallery,” Quantia notes the first will open later this month and features pieces that highlight Arkansas

African American history. “The work of Rex Deloney - who is our African American Arkansas Artist of the Year as well as an art instructor at Little Rock Central High School - symbolizes the hopes, dreams and struggles of the African American culture.” Next year’s exhibits continue in partnership with Arkansas Arts Council, Shiloh Museum of Ozark History and the El Dorado Arts Center.

The Trailblazers will feature a group of Arkansans who continue the African American narrative in Arkansas. Nominations are being accepted through October 11. “This initiative will show how we share, who we are and highlight some of the new, young, fresh ideas in terms of our state’s African American culture, community, art, politics and entrepreneurship.” Quantia realizes these individuals represent a bright, more equitable future for all Arkansans. “Trailblazers are the ones fulfilling the mission of the museum, who are preserving, interpreting and celebrating Arkansas African American history and culture. We want to celebrate, honor and partner with these people.”

Quantia realizes this as an exciting time for Mosaic Templars Cultural Center. “This is all part of how we continue to tell the story of African Americans in Arkansas.” A century of service will be reflected in the new exhibits as well as a new era for the organization. “It’s continuing to tell different aspects of the narrative of African Americans, not just stopping at one place but constantly digging into different areas and sharing more of the story. The goal of the museum is not to just be statewide. We’re a world-class, nationally accredited museum and we must take our history and share the resiliency of our community and our people across the country. I want everybody to see how amazing Arkansas and our history are.”

THE YEAR OF BARBIE began with a summer of pink hues and all things girlie. This blockbuster movie reflected, strangely enough, opportunities for women in every industry. Similarly, education in America brings science, technology, engineering and math into focus with a message for girls – you can be anything you want to be.

Cut to Arkansas Department of Transportation Assistant Chief Engineer for Program Delivery Keli Wylie who is this year’s Museum of Discovery Spark! Chairman. Keli discovered engineering in high school through a family friend and local contractor. She shares her enthusiasm with young women through the museum’s Girls in STEM program and encourages them to pursue dreams of their own.

“It was something I’d never considered before,” Keli elaborates. “I didn’t know any female engineers growing up, and it wasn’t an occupation widely promoted as a possibility. I began looking into the curriculum and decided I could do it. Fortunately, I was selected to interview with Arkansas Department of Transportation while still in college, and I accepted a position with the agency in December 2001.”

A Pine Bluff native, Keli attended Louisiana Tech University in Ruston and graduated with a degree in civil engineering. Much like Barbie, Keli is a firm believer in the adage, “if you can see it, you can be it.” She continues, “If girls are not exposed to STEM careers, they won’t know these pathways exist for them. I believe part of this issue stems from lack of accessibility to options in STEM careers to young girls, but programs like Museum of

Discovery’s Girls in STEM and Tinkerfest are helping bridge that gap.”

Keli became involved with Girls in STEM several years ago when a friend suggested becoming a mentor. “I jumped at the opportunity to be involved and introduce STEM-related fields to young girls!” she reflects. “I was able to plan out a fun, hands-on activity to share engineering concepts with the girls. I also participated in Tinkerfest, and last year, I was a Spark! Stars honoree.”

Spark! Stars are innovators of STEM and will be celebrated at the annual luncheon. The Spark! Gala is an interactive evening of lively demonstrations with libations and light bites. The fun and festivities serve as a timely reminder; Museum of Discovery CEO Kelley Bass elaborates. “Studies show informal STEM/STEAM institutions, such as museums, play a key role in building a strong STEM workforce by supplementing the concepts students learn in school while opening their eyes to exciting career paths in engineering, tech, medicine and more. Spark! allows guests to experience the museum and our mission, with a cocktail in hand, while supporting our beloved institution.” Keli adds, “It starts with educating the adults in our lives, who then filter down the confidence and support to our young girls to achieve their dreams and not let traditionally male-dominated careers intimidate them. College gave me confidence I’m not sure I would have gained in another field of study. I was one of only three females in my graduating class in a sea of men, so I had to find my voice and trust my abilities to succeed.”

CAMP ALDERSGATE ANNUAL FISH FRY: Serving Up Inclusion, Independence and Encouragement

FOR 40 YEARS, Camp Aldersgate has been serving up piping-hot catfish at the annual fish fry. In addition to this southern staple, there’s fun and fellowship throughout the afternoon. Nestled on 100 acres in the heart of the Capital City, Camp Aldersgate provides inclusive experiences for children and families throughout the year. Breanna McMillan and her family have enjoyed benefits of this specialty camp and are ardent ambassadors of the community it creates.

“My son, Carter, was born with an extra copy of his 21st chromosome, also known as Down syndrome,” she explains. “With that extra chromosome came all these other extras we never knew we’d have in life, for instance, the most incredible community of families who were also blessed with a child with Down Syndrome.” Breanna was introduced to Camp Aldersgate through the Arkansas Down Syndrome Association. “When I learned about the camp and how it could give Carter the independence of a weekend and summer camp that his peers have, we knew he’d attend.” She quickly realized just how transformative the camp’s programs and services are. “He loved it so much and talked about it so much, his younger brother literally begged to come every year until he was old enough to join him.”

Breanna’s son Will is an active third grader who plays tackle football and loves riding his bike, playing with Legos, Nerf guns and Minecraft. Carter is in the sixth grade and loves all things Special Olympics. He is a fan of jumping on the trampoline, episodes of Law and Order: SVU, and according to his mom, socializing and flirting. This year, the

McMillans will be celebrated as the Camp Adlersgate Fish Fry Family. “We are just so honored to be a part of this event, and as a mom of a child with special needs, I never knew if summer camp would be in the cards for us. Knowing there’s somewhere I can send him where he’s safe, loved, celebrated and encouraged is something I cannot put into words. The fact his brother can attend with him adds to the experience that they’re both doing the same things their peers are able to do.”

Camp Aldersgate offers social services to more than 1,700 individuals. Summer camps are hosted for children with specific medical conditions including muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, diabetes, cardiac conditions, arthritis, kidney conditions, asthma, cancer and bleeding disorders. In addition, Kota Camps invite participants to share this opportunity with friends or siblings. “Camp Aldersgate is a true blessing that gives children an opportunity they cannot get anywhere else,” Breanna elaborates. “Not only does it provide a place for our children with special needs, their siblings, and their friends, but it’s also a place for a parent of a child with special needs to be able to send their child worry-free.”

For more than 75 years, Camp Aldersgate has created memories as unique as the campers – empowering and honoring diversity and special needs as a beacon of hope, rather than a disability. “It’s a pillar of our community that should be celebrated and supported. It is lifechanging for so many families. It’s not just a place for independence and inclusion, but it’s a place where my boys can go, and I know they’re truly loved.”

TA-TA CANCER: Amber Henson Gives POWER to People Fighting Cancer

“TA-TA” IS AN INFORMAL salutation among friends and for Amber Henson, it refers to something just as dear. Amber established My Tata Testimony with a mission to generate support for individuals who are diagnosed or are at risk for breast cancer. Through educational and preparedness resources, Amber empowers these “new friends” with knowledge and hope. This mission fulfillment work is a result of her own cancer journey that began in 2019.

“I always considered myself a fairly healthy person,” Amber reflects. “I had to find a new gynecologist, and when I did, they wanted me to get a mammogram as I had never had one before. They called it a baseline.” This initial procedure revealed a small cancerous spot in her right breast. The medical team recommended a lumpectomy and assured her that the procedure would resolve any issues. “My doctor asked me to come in again for another lumpectomy as he was not able to get all of the cancerous spots within a clear margin,” she explains. “I did that, and when he called a second time saying he was not able to get all of the cancerous areas, I decided to research other procedures tailored to my needs.”

Thankfully, Amber’s cancer was a stage 0; she had the time to research options and craft a plan. ”I saw eight doctors before I found Dr. Kristi Funk in California. She was the first physician willing to do genetic testing on me, and I am beyond grateful she did. I would be telling a much different story if she hadn’t.” This genetic testing indicates breast cancer gene 1 or 2, also known as the BRCA gene. Her devotion to the other women in her family – her mother and nieces – was the reason. The good news is she did not have BRCA, but the bad news was she did have a rare gastric cancer gene known as CDH1.

“I had two relatives die because of stomach cancer, and I learned it is directly related to lobular breast cancer, which was found in my pathology,” Amber elaborates. “This is so rare that it affects one in nine million families. It upended my breast cancer treatment when I had to have my stomach removed, but they found three tumors in the lining of my stomach they had not detected previously so, in a way, breast cancer saved my life.” Amber had her stomach removed at M.D. Anderson in Houston, Texas. “Very few people in Arkansas had ever even heard about this type of stomach cancer. Fortunately, Dr. Paul Mansfield, who did my stomach procedure, was able to remove it laparoscopically then connect my esophagus directly to my intestine. It has changed entirely how I eat, what I drink, the products I buy for my personal care as well as housekeeping. I have never felt healthier.”

Last year her cancer journey and what she learned inspired her. “All I could think about was how I needed to raise funds to fight breast cancer and educate people to advocate for their own health,” she reflects. “I asked four of my commercial clients if they would do a fundraiser for me, and all of them said yes. We hoped to raise $5,000, but because so many people came out and contributed, we raised more than $100,000.” The result of this success is My Tata Testimony and a check presentation to Our Promise Cancer Resources in Hot Springs. My Tata Testimony will host a series of events in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “It’s vital that I share what I’ve learned and what has helped me along the way so others will be prepared and use that knowledge as power. Together, we can empower the women and men in our community affected by this horrible disease.”

I was privileged to work at Worthen Bank when they o ered a tuition reimbursement program for business-related degrees. I began attending evening classes after work; the professors were not only knowledgeable but also very engaging as they often shared their own work experiences making the material feel much more applicable. The extra encouragement provided by the professors and sta at UA Little Rock made such a di erence, especially towards the end of each semester when we experienced the additional stress of studying for nal exams.

I will never forget the amazing feeling when I stood there in my cap and gown with my accounting diploma in hand. That piece of paper paved the way for so many future open doors that I didn’t even realize would be available to me.

I now have the privilege of encouraging others to meet their goals and help them along the way. I hope to be a life-long learner, to continue to grow everyday as a person and encourage others to further their education and chase their dreams. UA Little Rock de nitely helped make my dreams become a reality.

Martha Murphy learned she carried the BRCA2 gene mutation when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. Her three daughters were tested for this gene mutation, and Lesley and Lauren found out they too carried the gene, which increases their risk of developing breast cancer in the future by four to five times that of women who do not have this gene mutation. All three have had a double mastectomy at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, with UAMS Surgeon Dr. Daniela Ochoa performing Lesley’s preventive surgery in 2017 and Lauren’s in 2020. Dr. James Yuen performed reconstructive surgery on Martha and Lauren, and Dr. Ochoa now provides follow-up care for all three members of the Murphy family.
