Acccepted Paint Products
• Interior and exterior water-based (latex, acrylic) and oil-based (alkyd, enamel) household paint
• Undercoat and primers (e.g. metal, wood, etc.)
• Concrete or masonry paint, block filler, drywall or stucco paint, deck and floor coatings/paint (including elastomeric)
• Varnish and urethane (only single component), wood finishing oil, melamine, stain, shellac, anti-rust paint, and stain blocking paint
• Marine paint and wood preservatives (unless registered under Pest Control Products Act)
• Swimming pool paint (only single component)
• Textured paint
• Wood, masonry, driveway sealer, and water repellant (not tar based or bitumen based)
• All types of aerosol paint
• Empty containers of accepted products
Max paint container size: 25 liters
Max paint aerosol size: 24 ounces or 680 grams
Always remember the BUD Rule: Buy no more than you need Use the paint you buy Drop off the leftovers for recylcing
Not Accepted Products
• Unidentifiable, unknown, unlabelled, and non-original containers
• Containers with poor integrity (e.g. badly rusted, leaking, bulging, imporperly sealed)
• Non-aerosol industrial paints and finishes (e.g. baked-on, heat resistant, etc)
• Roof patch and repair, tar or tar/ bitumen based products
• Patching stucco and spackling compounds
• Caulking compound, epoxies, glues, and adhesives
• Non-aerosol traffic or line marking paint
• Non-aerosol craft or automotive paint
• Brushes, rags and rollers
• Two-part or component paints containing catalyst or activator
• Colourants and tints
• Paint thinner, resins, mineral spirits, and solvents
• Waxes, polishes, sealants, and other household products
• Paint mixed with other products
• Products registered as a pesticide under the Pest Control Products Act
• Paint for skating rinks and curling club floors
• Household cleaners

THE MUNICIPALITY OF INVERNESS COUNTY PROVIDES WEEKLY COLLECTION SERVICES
• Single unit homes have a limit of 4 bags for garbage collection. All material must be curbside by 7am on your scheduled collection day.
• Any materials not collected by 9 pm on your areas scheduled collection day must be removed from the curb.
• Recycling is to be place in a see-through blue bag. There are no limits to number of recycling bags.

Know Before You THROW
PAPER
Important to separate clean paper products from other recyclables. Contaminated paper cannot be recycled and ends up in landfill. Clean dry paper is the goal.


Containers & Plastics Rinsed plastics and metals. Overly soiled materials will contaminant other items in the bag and reduces the ability of the products to be recycled.

BULKY WASTE SPRING COLLECTION
Things that are Accepted
Limit of 2 appliances at one stop. It is recommended doors on a refrigerator and a deep freezer be removed and placed next items curbside. No Single item to weigh more than 75 lbs. Excessively heavy items will not be collected.
Material such as mattresses, couches, chairs need to be covered. Carpets should be rolled in 4ft lengths.
Miscellaneous items such as water tank, boiler, empty oil tank. (Must be drained) No propane on BBQs
Things that are NOT Accepted
Construction & Demolition materials –siding, windows, gyprock, shingles, etc.
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) and batteries. No propane tanks. Paint is to be disposed of at the ENVIRO-DEPOT.
Cardboard or regular recyclable materials
Vehicle tires or automobile parts. Used tires must be returned to a tire retailer for disposal.
Televisions, computers and other electronics.
Clothing, leaf or yard waste.
Fishing rope, netting and traps.
Heavy Garbage Pick Up events are scheduled in Spring. Dates will be posted in local media, on our website and your Recycle Cape Breton App.

These services are provided without charge to all residents. Please see more information on acceptable items below:
Display Devices: Televisions, monitors and all-in-one, flat panel (LCD, LED and plasma) and rear projection.
Non-Cellular Telephones: Includes corded and cordless telephones as well as telephone answering machines.
Home Audio/Video Systems: Includes VCRs, DVD and CD players, digital cable and satellite equipment, speakers, amplifiers, receivers, data projectors and similar audio/video systems.
Desktop Printers: Printers designed to reside on a work surface, including laser and LED, ink jet, dot matrix, thermal, dye sublimation and ‘multi-function’ copy, scan, fax and print devices. Stand-alone, desktop fax machines are also included in this category.
Personal/Portable Audio/Video Systems: Includes docking speakers, portable stereos, portable CD players, portable audio recorders, tape/audio players, headphones, digital media (MP3) players, voice recorders, and digital and video cameras.
Home Theater In-A-Box (HTB) Systems: Includes pre-packaged disc player/speaker/amplifier systems for use with video or television display to create a home theater experience.
Video Gaming Systems & Peripheral: Includes gaming consoles, hand-held gaming services as well as game controllers and both wired and wireless joysticks.
Global Positioning System (GPS) Personal Portable & Vehicle (aftermarket): GPS devices both for personal portable use isports, leisure etc; as well as after market systems designed for use in a vehicle.
E-Books Readers: Includes personal and portable devices designed primarily for reading digital e-books and periodicals.
Desktop Computers: Desktop computers (including those acting as servers) and all bundled keyboards, mice, cables and internal components.
Portable Computers: Includes portable computers such as laptops, netbooks, notebooks and tables.
Computer Peripherals: Includes both wired and wireless manual input devices such as keyboards, mice and trackballs.
Vehicle Audio/Video Systems (aftermarket): Includes ampliphers, equilizers, speakers and audio/video components.
Cellular Devices and Pagers: Cell-enabled phones, including those offering camera, video recording and or audio functions, smartphones, PDAs, utilizing touch screen and handheld devices.
Countertop Microwave Ovens: may include microwaves from hotel rooms or restuarant units similar in chassis type to household type units. Please note built-in or over-the-range microwave ovens and microwave/range hood combinations are excluded from the program.
Desktop & Portable Scanners: Includes optical document/ image scanning devices that reside on a desktop and portable devices. Including scanners but not limited to business card, cheque, photo negative, ID card.
External Storage Drives & Modems: External hard drives, including home media network hard drives and external optical disk drives as well as network attached storage devices (NSA), external CD-ROM, DVD and Blu-ray drives.

Used Passenger Tires
You can return up to 4 eligible tires, during business hours, to any tire retailer in Nova Scotia. Unwanted or worn-out tires returned to the tire retailer must be whole, off rim and free of mud and debris.

Battery Recycling Procedures

Make a difference by recycling your rechargable batteries today. Items accepted for recycling: Rechargable batteries weighing 5kg or less each. No wet-cell, damaged or defective batteries accepted.

Household Hazardous Waste

Watch for special collection events for Household Hazardous Waste on the municipal home page or Recycle Cape Breton App.
• All materials should be left in the original container for easy identification
• Do not mix products together
• Wastes should be sealed and labelled
• Collect household batteries in a small bag, plastic container or coffee can. If you have 9-Volt batteries please cover the terminals with electrical tape prior to storage and store them in a cool, dry location and away from flammable material

Atlantic Used Oil Management Association is a provincial program that recycling auto waste fluids and containers under 50 litres







Oils: Means petroleum or synthetic crankcase, engine, and gear oils. Hydraulic, transmission, lubricating, and heat transfer fluids used for lubricating purposes in machinery or equipment.
Oil, glycol and DEF containers: Means a container with a capacity of up to 50 litres manufactured for holding an oil, glycol or DEF product.
Filters: Means a spin-on style or element style fluid filter that is used in hydraulic, transmission or internal combustion engine applications and an oil filter, a diesel fuel filter, a storage tank fuel filter and a household furnace oil filter other than a gasoline filter.
Aerosol containers: Used to contain products that clean automotive parts.
Glycol (antifreeze): Means ethylene or propylene glycol used or intended for use as a vehicle or commercial engine coolant, but does not include the following: plumbing antifreeze, windshield washer antifreeze, lock de-icer, gasoline and diesel fuel antifreeze.

Enviro-Depots
You are encouraged to bring redeemable beverage containers to your local enviro-depot for a refund. There are no refunds available when using the blue bag program. Call the depot nearest you for their hours of operation. Please note that these depots are privately owned and maintained.

Safe Sharps Bring Back Program
For the disposal of: • needles • syringes • lancets • infusion sets • auto injectors
Please return to your local pharmacy, Residential use only Program does not include sharps from medical, dental or veternary clinics, home care professionals or farms. Supported by Nova Scotia sharps manufacturers, distributors & pharmacies.
Please dispose of your sharps safely. Here’s how:

1. Pick up a free Safe Sharps container at your community pharmacy.
2. Place your used sharps into the Safe Sharps container.
3. When the container is full, return the sealed container to your community pharmacy.
