Essential March ‘11 8 things not to miss this march, people!

You have to laugh. No you really HAVE to laugh. There’s no option when a host of the nation’s top comedians come to town this month, led by the magnificently vitriolic JERRY SADOWITZ and the equally impressive MARK THOMAS. And there’s plenty more to entertain you, from great drama (DEATH OF A SALESMAN, AGE OF AROUSAL) and extraordinary music (BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, THE PHANTOM BAND, MUMFORD & SONS, DIAMH, VACCINES and more) to an exhibition of INSTAGRAMS and even a bit of SAUCY BURLESQUE. And we haven’t even mentioned World Champion DARTS players, CAGE FIGHTERS, details of a major golf championship and a brand new WHISKY FESTIVAL. Ten years ago this month, Inverness was granted city status. Right now it’s showing exactly why it deserves it and it seems like the year has only just begun. We’ll be back in April with more of everything you need to know, but, until then, read and enjoy. And don’t forget to visit the website.... Mon 7–Sun 13 Mar

ica • www.whatsoninverness.com CREATIVE – CONTEMPORARY – COMPELLO @ IG:LU, Church St, Inverness, Sat 19 Mar–Fri 01 Apr ‘COMPELLO’ is a collection of new work by the third year undergraduates of Moray School of Art. Exhibiting for the first time outside of Moray College, this group exhibition showcases fifteen up– and-coming artists currently studying for their Honours degree in Fine Art through University of the Highlands and Islands. Under the guidance of Scottish painter and lecturer, SHAUN MACDONALD, this diverse group brings together a vibrant show ranging in style, size, shape and media. An abstract expressionist piece sits snugly with the most Avant guard of conceptual pieces. This is no easy task but the students have worked carefully to make such diverse pieces fit together. This has been a collaborative exercise coordinated by student RUTH WALKER who has shown a flair for curating and organising such an event. This exhibition comes at a particularly exciting time for UHI, which has been recently awarded university status in it’s own right. Running from Fri 19 March until Fri 01 April this is a show that will challenge your perceptions of where art in Morayshire is going. The students involved will be happy to show you round and discuss their work. Opening times are Monday-Friday 11-6 and Saturday 12-5. MORAY SCHOOL OF ART EXHIBITING ARTISTS: CAROLINE INCKLE explores themes of growth, transformation and boundaries of the body. Caroline says “My work is lead by

a balance of research around my core themes and the making process it’s self. The pieces, which grow out of this process, are points on a journey rather than end products.”

LAURA MOON Primarily working in three dimensions, Laura has a passion for the found object. Focussing on what a material will and will not do when manipulated she explores the theory that we are not so much shaped by our environment as imprisoned by it.

ANDREA DEAR ANDREA’s inspiration is drawn from a now derelict croft with strong family connections. The doors and windows of the croft act as powerful portals between a world of the past and present, familiar and unfamiliar, love and abandonment. Drawing and photography is at the heart of her practice.

SING-A-LONG-A SOUND OF MUSIC @ Eden Court Empire, Sat 26 Mar

A tradition that began over a decade back at London s Prince Charles cinema has spread throughout the world, with Julie Andrews equal greatest moment (who can split Maria and Mary Poppins?) brought to the big screen in technicolour complete with subtitles so that you can sing along. And sing along you must, as it s packed with absolutely magnificent songs. You can also dress up as a character of your choice with goatherds, nuns and the like obviously being far more advisable than Nazis. www.eden-court.co.uk

THE EAGLE

Originally called Eagle Of The Ninth, this amazingly had to change its title after American focus groups thought it was a golf movie. Doh! In fact it s the latest movie from last King Of Scotland director Kevin Macdonald, all about a legendary Roman legion who went missing in Northern Britain. A fine cast includes Mark Strong, Jamie Bell and Donald Sutherland, with much of the filming having taken place up here in Achiltibuie.

LIMITLESS

Even the worst of Robert de Niro s movies are usually worth watching which makes the fact that this is supposed to be one of his best performances for a while a good reason for checking it out. He plays the tremendously named business mogul Carl Van Loon who tries to make money out of an unemployed writer who has turned into a financial whizz after taking an experimental drug that gives him photographic recall. Bullets fly as everyone dives in for a piece of the action. Also stars the lovely Anna Friel. 12

FILM

SOURCE CODE

Techno-thriller from director (and son of David Bowie) Duncan Jones. When a decorated soldier, played by Jake Gyllenhall, wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he s part of a secret government mission to discover the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. Given the ability to cross over into another man s identity for the last eight minutes of his life, he relives the bombing over and over again to get clues. Sounds like Groundhog Day meets Inception.

ica • www.whatsoninverness.com CAGED @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Thu 05 Apr and @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Wed 13 Apr A new take on the Beauty and The Beast story from CATHERINE WHEELS, one of the most dynamic children’s theatre companies around. It’s the tale of an unlikely couple who, it seems, will never get on.

“He licks his hands, stands on the toilet and runs through the woods. She carries a hankie, never gets mud on her shoes and always remembers to send a thank you note. So how come, when she sees him run like that, when he brings down a deer, when they sit at night just watching the stars, how come her heart starts to spin?” Ah yes, how come indeed? That’ll be the enduring, unlikely power of love we’ll warrant. Using the original tale as a springboard for something new, Caged has been created by the same artistic team responsible for Pobby and Dingan, Kappa and

The Ballad of Pondlife McGurk. The script has been written by Rob Evans, who wrote Pobby and Dingan, one of the biggest successes in the history of the company, formed in 1999 by the director Gill Robertson. Other hits like Martha (still being performed all around the world),

Lifeboat and White have consistently pushed the boundaries in terms of staging and writing and this looks set to do likewise. We’re told that it’ll be a long way from any pantomime perceptions, with a giant table set in the middle of a mirrored forest and a story that is “dark,

quirky and heartbreaking”. A performance for all beauties and beasties aged 8 and over. www. catherinewheels.co.uk

CALL OF THE LOONBIRD @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Sat 02 Apr Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre presents this truly magical story about the life of Little Eagle as he grows from small boy to adult through adversity, illness and later success as a storyteller. In his youth he rescues a ‘Loon’, a bird of great wisdom, who later helps him to triumph over intolerance and to understand and learn from different beliefs and cultures. A wise message and a gorgeous puppet show that can be enjoyed on many different levels by children and adults. www.findhorn.org

PLUTOT LA VIE: BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 30 Mar Plutôt La Vie’s latest family production ventures into the world of three men and a Chair. Nothing to be done and nothing to do, Fritz, Franz and Rudy sit and wait. Expectation! Hope! Boredom! Delight! Not to take things sitting down, they put their best feet forward to make the grade and avoid a kick in the pants. A hilarious exploration of relationships, slapstick and chairs as three men await their fate, By the Seat of Your Pants sounds like a cross between Laurel and Hardy and Waiting For Godot. Which is pretty much how everything should be in an ideal world. Founded in 2003 through the unique collaboration of Tim Licata and Ian Cameron, Plutôt La Vie has developed quite a reputation for refreshing and irreverent theatre, with shows like A Clean

Sweep, Flik Flak and First You’re Born garnering critical accolades all over the place. They also in educational and community settings “using techniques of ‘guided discovery’ drawn from our

MOZART REQUIEM TASTER DAY @ Fortrose AC, Sat 02 Apr, 11am-3pm

Back in 2009, the Black Isle Messiah brought together over 100 instrumentalists and singers from all over Scotland and beyond to the first event of its kind in the Highlands. In November the follow up, Mozart s Requiem looks set to be just as popular and you might even be taking part in it yourself. The Taster Day is designed for all: from singers who have never sung the work before, and who will need support during their performance, to more experienced singers who would like to remind themselves of what a performance of the Mozart Requiem will entail. They re also encouraging those who know the piece well to volunteer as singing buddies for someone else within their own voice range. BIM Committee member Aileen Fraser explains. Lots of people can sing - but think they will sound foolish if they try it anywhere outside the bathtub. The Taster Day will give singers the opportunity for an informal run-through of the most moving pieces of classical music ever written ‒ without any

What The FOLK ?

Trying to define folk music is always a tricky business and usually gets you more tangled up than when you started. This month is a prime example with a heap of the genre’s finest proponents coming to town, all with a distinctive sound and something engaging to offer. And we haven’t even got started on our argument about how the most folk music of all is punk rock. Perhaps we’ll save that for next month. In the meantime here’s a pretty special selection...

n DAIMH @ Bogbain Farm, Sat 19 Mar One of Scotland’s best loved traditional music bands featuring the talents of CALUM ALEX MACMILLAN on vocals with ANGUS MACKENZIE on pipes, GABE MCVARISH on fiddle and ROSS MARTIN on guitar. The band absolutely rocked Celtic Connections recently and this show will see them unveil their new banjo player. Tickets £12 (£10 for Northern Roots Music Club members)

To book email info@bogbainfarm.com or ring 01463 772800.

n WOLFSTONE @ Ironworks, Sat 19 Mar MUSIC

We rarely miss an opportunity to dub them “the Mothership of Celtic Rock”, but it’s a tag they fully deserve. Founder members DUNCAN CHISHOLM and STUART EAGLESHAM combine with long term piper STEVIE SAINT at the heart of proceedings, combining traditional sounds with contemporary rock. Bound to be something of a triumphant homecoming. www.ironworksvenue.com

n BLAZIN’ FIDDLES @ Eden Court Empire, Thu 24 Mar Bruce and the Blazers bring their fiddle frenzy to Eden Court and launch their new album, Thursday

Night in the Caley, the first to feature their new recruits, JENNA REID, from Shetland, on fiddle and ANNA MASSIE from Fortrose. www.eden-court.co.uk

n SKERRYVORE @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Fri 25 Mar Six piece from the Isle of Tiree with their trad-rock fusion for the 21st century. Party time guaranteed. www.strathpefferpavilion.org

n THE MACCOLLECTIVE @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sat 26 Mar >>> The enchanting Black Isle fiddle player LAUREN MACCOLL (pic >) was the winner of Instrumentalist of

the Year 2009 at the Scots Trad Awards. She’s joined by BARRY REID (Croft No. 5, Treacherous Orchestra) on guitar, MHAIRI HALL on piano, and new recruit SHONA KIPLING on piano accordion. Together they deliver a sparkling combination of mellow fiddle and box playing intertwined with a sumptuous harmonic backdrop. A sound that could only come from the Highlands.

ALEJANDRO ZIEGLER TANGO QUARTET @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Wed 09 Mar If there’s a sexier dance than the tango we’ve yet to see it and all it takes is the first few bars of music to get us all previous, our heads filled with images of participants getting all close and slinky in that most irresistibly Latin manner. If you’re just as smitten with it, you’d be well advised to head for Findhorn for a Buenos Aires quartet who have developed their own contemporary tango style based in the music of Julian Plaza, Alfredo Gobbi, Astor Piazzolla and Ziegler’s own compositions. Plus of course, a respect for traditional tango that positively throbs through their sensibilities. www.findhorn.org

THE WIYOS @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Sat 19 Mar @ The Old Brewery, Cromarty, Sun 20 Mar Formed in New York City, The Wiyos took their name from the toughest gang to prowl the streets of that old town and combine the spirit of days gone by with something truly modern. Much of their music is inspired by the early American musical idioms of the 1920s and ‘30s, but the band has a reputation for gleefully subverting genre distinctions. They seamlessly fuse vintage sounds with the contemporary and their more recent explorations blend human beat-box with classic swing and New Orleans style rhythms. There’s a vaudevillian exuberance to their live shows and even a bit of physical comedy thrown into the mix. Suffice to say you’re not going to see anything like it outside an episode of the magnificent Boardwalk Empire.

TWILIGHT HOTEL @ Eden Court OneTouch, Tue 22 Mar Hailing from the fertile music scene of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Brandy Zdan and Dave Quanbury have been combining their talents for almost a decade and now make their home in the musical hotbed of Austin, Texas. Together they possess an elusive chemistry and musical style that is “dark, moody and rooted in some kind of nostalgic passion for scratchy records and vintage guitar tones”. Which sounds rather fine indeed. Their latest album, the wonderfully titled “When The Wolves Go Blind” was recorded

SHE’KOYOKH KLEZMER ENSEMBLE @ Universal Hall, Findhorn, Fri 25 Mar She’Koyokh is London’s “klezmer sensation” performing Eastern European and Balkan folk music at international festivals and concert halls, on BBC television and radio while “keeping it real” at weddings and on the streets. Established with the support of a Millennium Award through the Jewish Music Institute in London, this popular band is now at the forefront of the revival of Eastern European roots music in the UK, bringing a fresh, energy to an extensive repertoire ranging from exhilarating Bulgarian and Turkish music to soulful Ashkenazi melodies from the villages in Poland, Romania and the Ukraine. Since their Southbank debut at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall when She’Koyokh premiered a klezmer concerto by Jewish composer Rohan Kriwaczek, the ensemble has toured the UK and internationally. Highlights include the Jewish Cultural Festivals in Krakow and Munich, Glastonbury and the Edinburgh Festival, Buskers’ Bern and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. She’Koyokh was awarded first prize at Amsterdam’s International Jewish Music Festival competition in 2008 and with two albums already under their belts, they’re rapidly becoming the genre’s most invigorating proponents. If you’re a fan of Orkestra Del Sol (and who isn’t?), these are unmissable.

THE PHANTOM BAND @ Hootananny, Tue 15 Mar

One of the most notable Inverness gigs in recent years was when The Phantom Band came to Hoots to promote their debut album, Checkmate Savage. And live, the Glasgow combo s glorious mix of electronica, folk and indie proved even more potent and irresistible than on record. It was a celebratory night than none who witnessed it are unlikely to forget. This time round they ll also have material to lob into the fray from last year s follow up The Wants, an altogether more atmospheric affair that even had some recalling music by the likes of The Blue Nile. Whatever the case, the only thing you can be sure of, is that you can t be sure of anything when it comes to The Phantom Band. Gig of the month.

YOUNG REBEL SET/IAIN MCLAUGHLIN @ Hootananny, Thu 03 Mar

Teeside combo inspired by the spirit of the mighty Dexys Midnight Runners and possessed of heaps of ace tunes loosely described as urban folk . A strong bill also includes an acoustic set from ICA fave McLaughlin. If you caught him at Iglu last month, you ll know just how good he is.

THOUSAND STARS @ Ceol Mor, Fri 18 Mar

Young band taking their first tentative steps towards the big time with a debut gig at the increasingly influential Ceol Mor. Check out their demo at www.myspace.com/thousandstarsmusic then get along to offer them your support.

SIMPLE MINDS + BIG COUNTRY @ Northern Meeting Park, Sat 16 Jul

Just announced, a forthcoming city-centre gig that brings together a couple of bands from the eighties who still have the capacity to get the arms in the air and pack their sets with heaps of hits. After recent summers in the company of Elton John and Rod Stewart, this looks like being a far more dynamic way of courting the cross-generational demographic. And next year? Anything is possible.

THE VACCINES @ Ironworks, Wed 30 Mar

You d have to be living in a cave not to have noticed all the attention The Vaccines have been getting recently. And this despite only being formed nine months ago. Front man Justin Young used to be in indie-folksters Jay Jay Pistolet, getting together with Anri Hjorvar (bass), Freddie Cowan (guitar, younger brother of Tom from The Horrors) and Pete Robertson (drums) to fashion a thrillingly spiky thrash pop sound that with their ďŹ rst demo If You Wanna , immediately got the accolade Hottest Record In The World from annoying Kiwi DJ Zane Lowe. For once, his enthusiasm was not misguided, as proved by their ďŹ rst proper single Wreckin Bar (Ra Ra Ra) which, clocking in at under a minute and a half, had older listeners fondly recording the spirit of The Ramones and Buzzcocks , combos who always understood that great pop need never outstay its welcome. The follow up single, Post Break Up Sex and an NME tour (complete with front cover) have made sure that if any band is resolutely of the right now, it s The Vaccines. Whether a long career stretches ahead of them is less certain, but as of March 2011, they re a synonym for modern. To miss them would be unforgiveable.

BIG FAT PANDA @ Mad Hatters, Sat 19 Mar

Six piece ska act drawn from various Scottish combos and guaranteeing an ebullient show. Moonstomping expected.

TWO ZEBRAS @ Mad Hatters, Sat 05 Mar

Daniel McGuire is a Scot who s spent much of the last year in Canada with his one man indie-rock music project that goes under the name Two Zebras. During his time away he informs us that among other things he learnt to ride a bike and grew an enormous moustache. Now he s back to promote his newly released single, Dreams/Desperately Seeking Something , supported by blues funksters James Brown is Annie.

Emma Gillespie played live at Wembley and had two singles in the top ten at once, all before she d even signed her first record contract. Quite a way from the days when she used to be a busker in Glasgow, sold vodka jellies at Glastonbury and lived in a Mongolian yurt on the Scottish coast. Very much a journey as such things have to be called these days. It s all thanks to Sky s rather more credible take on X Factor, their talent show Must be The Music. Emma happened to be passing the auditions and taken by the idea of being able to sing her own songs on the telly, decided to give it a whirl. Good job too as she ended up series winner with a growing army of fans for her sweet, folky 32 voice and the aforementioned downloads of her

live appearances on the show whizzing into the charts. Influenced by artists as diverse as Feist, PJ Harvey, Bat For Lashes and Bjork, she s proof that not all TV talent shows have the sole intention of churning out facsimiles of Mariah Carey. And she s quite a life story to tell, involving travelling the world, almost getting hit by the tsunami back in 2004 and honing her art jamming in Brooklyn. Her debut album, Stand Still gathers together the best of her songs from the past ten years, making hers one of the longest overnight success stories of all time. And she s all the better for that. Should be a good night. www.ironworksvenue.com

DAVE MACLEOD @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Thu 17 Mar, 8pm

SPECIAL

Dave MacLeod has a confession. “My thumbs have always been really weak”, he admits in his daily online diary (at www.davemacleod.blogspot.com) as he details his training for a forthcoming boulder project in Glen Nevis. Apparently he’s concerned about his “full crimp strength”, a delightfully mystifying phrase from the world of climbing. It’s a world that’s getting increasing publicity these days, much of it due to MacLeod and his climbing partner, the gloriously excitable Tim “I’m Stoked” Emmett, whose recent ascent of a hard new route on Sron Ulladaleon the Isle Of Harris, the biggest overhanging piece of rock in the UK (700 feet high, overhanging its base by 150 feet) was broadcast live as The Great Climb on the BBC and proved to be hypnotically irresistible viewing. It was a project that had been three years in the making after an initial plan to broadcast a climb live was washed out by (hardly surprisingly) heavy rain, so it was nice to see the participants’ passion for what they do fully vindicated. MacLeod started climbing when he was 15 and climbed most of the hard rock and winter climbs in Scotland. For the last decade he’s been making first ascents of as hard routes as possible in most climbing disciplines but especially trad, bouldering, sport and winter climbing, with the DVD, Echo Wall, of his ascent of the hardest route up Ben Nevis winning seven international film awards including a BAFTA. He’ll be discussing that and, of course the Great Climb in what’s bound to be a highly entertaining illustrated talk. Just don’t go messing with his thumbs. Tickets £10 on-line from Booth Scotland and TicketWeb, from 24-hour ticket hotline 08444 771000, June’s Card Shop Dingwall and Pavilion office 01997 420124 (9am to 6pm Mon to Fri) davemacleod.blogspot.com

CAIRNGORMS WILDCAT PROJECT @ New Millburn Academy Hall, Wed 16 Mar, 7.30pm The Highland Tiger, or wildcat, could well be the most extraordinary of local creatures, as elusive as beautiful. And increasingly endangered. This is an Inverness Field Club talk from Cairngorms Wildcat Project Manager Dr David Hetherington.

GREAT NORTH OF SCOTLAND MODEL RAILWAY EXHIBITION @ TA Centre, Edgar Rd, Elgin, Sat 26 & Sun 27 Mar It’s rather reassuring that in this age of relentless technological gimmickry, there’s still a place in people’s hearts for the celebration of the train set. And you can expect to see examples beyond your wildest imaginings at this major get together for fans of railway recreations. The trains are really little, not far away. 37

INVERNESS WHISKY FESTIVAL @ Bogbain Farm, Fri 08 & Sat 09 Apr

Considering the Highlands is so intrinsically linked with the best whisky on the planet, it s a surprise that there s never really been a Whisky Festival up here before. Thank goodness then for Bruce McGregor, who s putting on a two day event at his Bogbain Farm featuring whiskies from small and independent distilleries around Scotland, live music, grub from Good Highland Food, a Masterchef winner, master classes and an auction. Exhibiting at the Festival, alongside many others with drams for everyone to try, will be Inverness local distillery, Tomatin. Considered a hidden gem in the whisky world, Tomatin s whisky will also be sponsoring the Friday night launch ceilidh. As well as Tomatin, exhibiting at the Festival will be the smallest family run distillery in Scotland, Springbank, who ll be making their way up from Campbeltown; purveyors of the rarest collection of whiskies, Duncan Taylor; and Abhainn Dearg, the first distillery from the Outer Hebrides in over 200 years will be exhibiting too. Gordon & MacPhail will be setting up a pop-up shop where ticket holders can buy all the whiskies that are exhibiting at the event. And there ll be plenty more whisky makers represented to show the rich variety of drams available. As well as the whisky tasting, in Bogbain Farm s inimitable style, the festival will also feature live music. Launching the Festival and following on from the roaring success of the Hogmanay Barn Dance held at Bogbain, will be a ceilidh hosted by the Bogbain All Star Ceilidh Band. Throughout the Saturday there will be an open stage featuring musicians from all over Scotland, and the event will close on the Saturday night with a brilliant double bill - local stars, duo Mairearad Green & Anna Massie and Orcadian legends, Saltfishforty. To add a little twist to the malts, mi inverness will be creating a Whisky Cocktail Bar! With a selection of whiskies to mix up with fruit, spices, crushed ice and other drinks, this is a fun way to dabble in Uisge Beatha. The first Inverness Whisky Festival marks the start of a new era in Bogbain Farm s history, with a change of image and a new focus. Bogbain Farm & Whisky Festival Director, Bruce MacGregor says, We have worked very hard over the years to make Bogbain a great place for families, stag and hen parties, festivals and concerts - we are building on this all the time and we are proud to be bringing unique events 34 and Festivals to Inverness - we have a rustic charm that no other venue can offer .

He went on to say, We are so grateful to the Kingsmills Hotel, Tomatin Distillery and mi inverness for their support. The beautiful Kingsmills Hotel are offering great rates to our ticket holders and without the help of local businesses, the first Inverness Whisky Festival could not have gone ahead. An acclaimed singer-songwriter as well as a broadcaster and author, BBC Radio Scotland presenter Tom Morton appears at the Festival with his whisky show, The Malt and Barley Revue. It combines some hilarious and poignant songs, poetry and of course - a dram for everyone in the audience! (Limited numbers available.) The Inverness Whisky Festival Collectors Auction will be a main feature of Saturday s events. Festival Manager Yvonne Murray explains, With rare whiskies and collectible memorabilia to auction off, it will be an exciting and unique element to the whole Festival. We are incredibly excited to have a 50 year old numbered Dalmore decanter from a local collector, and we look forward to having these exclusives alongside the other features of this great event.

Food will be provided by Good Highland Food alongside Sam Carswell from Biadh at MacSorley s - a Glasgow restaurant that focuses on bringing Hebridean classics to an urban audience. Carswell, a former Masterchef winner and colleague of Raymond Blanc, will not only be preparing food but also giving a food demo. The master classes will be a first class chance to taste and learn more about whisky. To find out more about the classes and the whole programme, visit the website. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought by emailing info@invernesswhiskyfestival.co.uk or calling 01463 772800. Festival tickets are £60 and include entry to the Friday night ceilidh; free whisky at the exhibition; food all day from Good Highland Food and Sam Carswell; entry to the auction; entry to the Anna Massie & Mairearad Green and Saltfishforty concert on Saturday evening; and an exclusive, limited edition Inverness Whisky Festival nosing glass from Glencairn Crystal.

SPECIALS

Bottled in 1978, the casks for Dalmore 50 year old were laid down in the 1920s, and some of the spirit is reputed to have been distilled in the late 19th century. This is one of the best 50 year-old whiskies ever produced and is the personal favourite of many connoisseurs worldwide - a great scoop for the Festival, and indeed the city of Inverness.

Crown Wall:

Cathedral A visual narrative exploring Scottish beliefs and Highland myths n WHAT IS THE OVERALL CONCEPT OF THE WORK? Inverness is special place and a unique city. I wanted to examine the relationship between the urban spaces and the rural wilderness surrounding it. I have also tried to capture the essence of the belief systems and spiritual relationships this Highland Community have with each other and the surrounding landscape. It encompasses historical references and very current issues in a representational rather than a literal style.

n TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE IMAGES AND WHAT THEY REPRESENT? During my research I was privileged to meet a great many people who contributed to the creative process – local historians, businessmen, young people, ordinary residents and folk who work in the community. Their stories and energy inspired particular elements or characters. The central panel’s Traveller figure is based on the renowned “Forty Pockets” who wandered the city in the 1950s; he was so called because he wore all his clothes at the same time. The Greig Street Bridge is instantly recognisable as a local landmark. I love this bouncy bridge and have used it to represent the passage between the city and wilderness beyond. The Wolf Clan and Deer Clan figures are based on local young folk. I have drawn on various patterns and textures for their clothing – tile patterns from Town House and Inverness Cathedral, the ancient weaving in grasses and foraged sheep’s wool by Lovat Scout and artist Angus McPhee (1916-1997), and to pictish and Celtic patterns in the tattoos. Some of the references are more obvious than others and I want to leave scope for the observer’s own interpretation.

over the last 2 months and is finally revealed with its new buff stonework and a very large and striking artwork by artist, MIKE INGLIS.

ART

INVERNESS The tired and neglected Crown Road Wall has undergone aOLD long TOWN overdue ART facelift

We interviewed Mike to find out what the work is all about – and the inspiration behind it. . . n WHY THE TITLE “CATHEDRAL”? The name is partly inspired by the film Logan’s Run – Cathedral is the name of the urban space between the state controlled “utopia” and the natural wilderness beyond. It is also a personal reference to a talk by fellow artist Neville Gabie that I attended at Inverness Cathedral in September 2009 (part of Re-Imagining The Centre) which inspired and touched me in a way no religion ever could.

n WAS IT DIFFICULT WORKING ON SUCH A LARGE PIECE? I had to consider that it is a huge area to cover – something like 275 square metres – and that it can only be viewed properly from some distance because of the road, or by motorists catching a passing glimpse. That said, once I had drawn the images, and now they have been scaled up, some of the figures are 3 metres high. I am really pleased with the overall impact. My engineering background and public art experience helped me understand the practical issues with the site and work with Highland Council engineers and a local firm to come up with a material that will be long lasting and easy to keep clean.

n SUM UP HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE FINISHED WORK I’m very happy with the final result. I’ve developed a real affection for the city and its people during the research period and my time here; I hope I’ve done them justice. I don’t intend to fully explain the work but hope that the local community and visitors will study it and create their own stories or “Highland Myth” based on their own personal beliefs.

Cathedral was commissioned by Inverness Old Town Art as part of a series of public art installations promoted by The Highland Council. To delve further into the CATHEDRAL story visit www.invernessoldtownart.co.uk - or contact Susan Christie on 01463 724383.

INVERNESS HALF MARATHON & 5K FUN RUN @ Inverness Leisure, Sun 13 Mar, 1pm Runners taking part in the Inverness Half Marathon will find a new hand on the starting gun for this popular event established over quarter of a century ago and which scores consistently high ratings among runners from all over the country (and indeed the world). Caledonian Concepts, the organisers behind the popular Loch Ness Marathon, are taking over from the team who have steered the event to its current success over the last 26 years. The Half Marathon begins along the banks of the Ness, then follows the river, running beneath the Castle. A warm welcome finally awaits all runners as they approach the finish line on entering the Queen s Park Stadium ‒ achieved by over 2000 runners in 2010 and many others over the decades it has been staged. If you want to run but are not sure whether you re ready for the half marathon itself, then the 5K Fun Run offers a nice entry level. It s open to people of all ages and abilities including wheelchair entrants and children accompanied by adults. While there may be limited places available on the day, registration for this year s event has already closed, but all the participants would welcome support from spectators. The finish line for both races is on the running track at Queens Park Stadium. Car parking will be available at the Sports Centre, and the surrounding area. Please do not park at the Ice Rink as this is private property and do not leave your car on the streets surrounding the Sports Centre, as these form part of the race route. For more details go to www.invernesshalfmarathon.co.uk While the Half Marathon is perhaps the most high profile running event taking place this month, there are plenty of other opportunities to participate in the sport. BATTLE IN THE GLEN 2 @ Ironworks, Sat 26 Mar Testosterone ahoy as MMA caged fighting returns to Ironworks. This night is set for some hard hitting explosive action as MMA combines the art of several distinct types of martial arts for fighters to utilise. In one fight you can see fighters utilizing everything from wrestling and judo to mauy Thai kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. The MMA combatants will battle it out using techniques from these distinct forms of fighting inside an eight sided cage. The only way to win is to knock out the opponent, force them to tap out employing a submission, or to succeed by the decision of the judges. www.ironworksvenue.com

HIGHLAND DARTS CHALLENGE @ Ironworks, Fri 01 Apr

SPORT

While cage fighting is obviously going to attract a passionate audience, we prefer the crowds at the darts. It s a massively popular spectator sport with the darts players becoming the most unlikely of national heroes. As if to prove the point, who d have thought Phil The Power Taylor would (deservedly) make the podium at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards? The layout of Ironworks should be perfectly suited to a darts event and this one brings in some big names in the form of 2011 World Champion Adrian Lewis. He ll be joined by 2011 world semi-finalists Mark Webster and Terry Jenkins along with Australia s Paul Nicholson and Scotland s Robert Thornton and John Henderson for this year s Highland Challenge Cup. www.ironworksvenue.com

SCOTTISH OPEN @ Castle Stuart, 07-10 Jul

Great news for Inverness that the Scottish Open is to be hosted this year at the recently refurbished Castle Stuart Golf Links. It will be the seventh Scottish course to play host to the prestigious tournament since 1972; following in the footsteps of Downfield, St Andrews, Haggs Castle, The Gleneagles Hotel, Carnoustie and Loch Lomond Golf Club, which staged proceedings over the last 15 years from 1996 to 2010. Not only will this mean a fantastic opportunity for the city and the Highlands in general to showcase itself to the rest of the world, but it means we ll all get the chance to take in a top flight championship close up. And quite possibly bump into Rory McIlroy or John Daley in the street. For such a big event, tickets are surprisingly cheap, especially if you buy them before the end of March, when you can get to all four days plus practice and the pro-am for just £55. Go to www. europeantourtickets.com for details. Before all that, the Nairn Golf Festival runs from Mon 11-Fri 15 Apr with clinics, coaching, demonstrations a beer festival and of course, lots of golf. More details at: www.nairngolffestival.co.uk

narrative, whilst keeping his cards held firmly to his chest until the very end’. Most recently you might have caught him on Russell Howard’s Good News on BBC Three and supporting Frankie Boyle on tour. A fine weaver of yarns, he’s got more than just the mad beard in common with the Big Yin. www.ironworksvenue.com

GILDED BALLOON Comedy Circuit @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sun 13 Mar More comedy from Edinburgh’s most famous venue. No names yet, but you’re guaranteed some of the best young gag merchants around. www.eden-court.co.uk

RUSSELL KANE @ Ironworks, Wed 16 Mar How long have we been telling you about this one? It seems like years, and might possibly be more. That’s all due to just how in demand Kane has become these days, with regular TV stints including the I’m A Celebrity... spin off show. It’s stand-up that finds him at his best though, with tales of his childhood and a great grasp of the rhythms of humour. Well worth checking out – and fingers crossed he actually makes it this time and isn’t called away to read the news or something! www.ironworksvenue.com

DAN ANTOPOLSKI: Turn Of The Century @ Ironworks, Fri 25 Mar Back in 1997, Dan Antopolski took his first steps on stage at the marvellously named Purple Turtle in London, a tentative start to a comedy career that’s gone from strength to strength and saw him, as he put it, “fall on the London circuit like a traitor on a spike.” Increasingly successful excursions to Edinburgh (including one with Catherine Tate where she first performed her old woman routine, and another where Dan played a Spanish waiter singing The Smiths’ “Girlfriend In A Coma”) have seen him one of the most popular stand-ups around. He even won the Dave Award for Funniest Joke Of the Fringe in

2009 with “Hedgehogs: why can’t they just share the hedge?” . A funny fellow. www.ironworksvenue.com

JOHN SHUTTLEWORTH: A Man With No More Rolls @ Eden Court OneTouch, Thu 17 Mar The alter-ego of GRAHAM FELLOWS who scored something of a comedy punk hit under the guise of Jilted John and even had a bit part in Coronation Street. It’s as John Shuttleworth that he’s been most successful though, describing himself as a

“versatile singer/organist from Sheffield South Yorkshire. My ambition is to succeed in the sphere of popular music. Retired Security Guard, hobbies are swimming, ping pong and DIY.” Professing to be “available for in store promotions, theme nights, sheltered accommodation etc”, he’s spreading his gently disconcerting world view

with his latest tour, during which he might possibly tell you about his wife Mary who “looks a bit like a

Chuckle Brother” and the rest of his family and neighbours, while entertaining you with songs (including his attempt to win Eurovision, “Pigeons In Flight”) and wise words, perhaps about wasps and the like. You’ll come away a better person all things considered. www.eden-court.co.uk

STAND OUT STAND UP @ Ceol Mor, Fri 25 Mar Good to see another new venue for comedy in town, this time at a pub which is becoming something of an epicentre for some of the most interesting young people in town. MARK THOMAS: Extreme Rambling (Walking The Wall) @ Eden Court OneTouch Wed 06 Apr In this world of rock star comics playing stadia a fortnight after doing the Michael McIntyre show, Mark Thomas is one of those increasingly rare beasts, a principled man who actually wants to do something more with his jokes than just update the mother-in-law shtick or settle for Boylesque outrage. Ever since the eighties he’s brought his political impulses to bear on everything from striking miners to access to National Trust property, his rare TV appearances always worth watching. His latest show involves one of his most impressive undertakings to date. During 2010 he decided to go rambling in the Middle East and walked the entire length of the Israeli Separation Barrier, crossing between the Israeli and the Palestinian side. This is the story of 300,000 settlers, a 750km wall, six arrests, one stoning, too much hummus and one simple question... can you ever get away from it all with a good walk?

ica • www.whatsoninverness.com SMALLTOWN @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 02 Mar Something has been put in the water and things are about to get very strange indeed. SMALLTOWN is dynamic new comedy written by leading Scots writers DOUGLAS MAXWELL, D. C. JACKSON and JOHNNY MCKNIGHT and produced by the always entertaining Random Accomplice company. It tells the tale of what happens when a polluted water supply turns the residents of three Ayrshire towns crazy - from Zombies in the frozen food aisle, to oversexed teenagers releasing the animal within, to a dangerous game of Russian Roulette on Girvan beach. As was the case with another recent Eden Court show, Against The Odds, this one relies on audience involvement to decide the outcome. Each writer will create a theatrical appetiser set in their own hometown of Girvan (Maxwell), Stewarton (Jackson) and Ardrossan (McKnight) with the show having three possible audiences. The audience votes on which they want. Sounds like fun. www.eden-court.co.uk

DEATH OF A SALESMAN @ Eden Court Empire, Tue 08- Sat 12 Mar Perth Theatre has a long, rich theatrical history with the involvement of many acting greats along the way. More recently even a young Ewan McGregor trod the boards for the first time with the company. Very much a part of history then, but for cultural significance even they are trumped by the show they’re bringing to Inverness, DEATH OF A SALESMAN. Arthur Miller’s Pulitzer Prize winning 1949 play about the downfall of an ordinary man, travelling salesman Willy Loman, is one of the canonical works of modern theatre, in both form and content. As a comment on the tragedy of believing blindly in the American Dream, it provided an archetype for countless characters that followed in both theatre and cinema, while its bold use of the artifice of the stage itself nods at the European works of the likes of Brecht. Despite also writing The Crucible and All My Sons, Death Of A Salesman remains Miller’s finest work and one which remains just as powerful and relevant today as back in the forties. www.eden-court. co.uk

MAD, BAD AND DANGEROUS TO KNOW @ The Warehouse, Lossiemouth, Sat 19 Mar May’s a bit mad and hitting 60 is not going to stop her having a good time! Matti is bad. She may be a child, but she’d curdle your rum punch! Mia is glamorous, ageless and maybe a little bit . . .dangerous to know. When they’re brought together you get a highly entertaining tale of one woman growing old disgracefully, one woman not growing old at all and one. . . very scary child! Could it bring them together or all go horribly wrong? This is the latest comedy drama from the reliably excellent MsFits theatre company, award winning actress FIONA KNOWLES and multi award winning playwright RONA MUNRO, a partnership spanning over two decades and 18 one woman shows including Sex & Chocolate, Stick Granny on the Roof Rack, Women on the Verge of a T Junction, Secrets, Lies & DIY, Fur Coat & Magic Knickers & Women Behaving Madly. www.thewarehousetheatre.co.uk

SWEETNESS @ Eden Court OneTouch, Wed 23 Mar A comedy from the far north that’s coming to Inverness soon after its world premiere in Stornaway. It’s adapted by Kevin MacNeil from Torgny Lindgren’s novel Hummelhonung, translated by Tom Geddes with MATTHEW “Tailor Of Inverness” ZAJAC both directing and starring. Music and sound are by the renowned musician JOHNNY HARDIE. Two brothers Archie and Murdo, live in the far north on opposite sides of a field. One brother is shrivelling away. The other is eating himself to death on a diet of macaroons dipped in jam. These misfit siblings haven’t spoken for years – but they do share a cat. Kate, a writer who has come to lecture in a nearby village, is snowed up with Archie after he puts her up for the night. In the days that follow Kate is drawn in to the tissue of lies and self deception that keep the brothers alive in a bond of mutual loathing, leading them to their fate with profound, funny and touching results. www.eden-court.co.uk www.dogstartheatre.co.uk

AGE OF AROUSAL @ Eden Court OneTouch, Fri 01 & Sat 02 Apr

DRAMA

“1885 - a time of great passion, great confusion. Virtue is barely holding down its petticoats. Women are bursting their corsets with unbridled desire.” Just like today really then. Written by LINDA GRIFFITHS and inspired by The Odd Women by George Gissing, this is a remarkable sounding tale about suffragettes learning the social power of the typewriter (and including the magnificent line, “Type, damn you, type!

It’s the only way to liberty!”), while all caught up in an odyssey of alcoholism, cross-dressing and sexual revolution. And if that outline alone hasn’t already convinced you that it’s got “unmissable” status, conclusive proof comes from the fact that it’s the latest production from the extraordinary STELLAR QUINES, Scotland’s only women’s theatre company. Founded back in 1993 to reflect the energy, experience and perspective of women in theatre, it stimulates supports and enables women to take control of their professional lives in theatre by producing work of the highest quality. It fosters a friendly, collaborative working environment with a shared creative vision, resulting in genuinely communal ownership of thought-provoking, brave and high quality theatre, explores the boundaries between conventional theatre and dance, music, physical theatre and new media, embracing new art forms in the development of its work. And this looks like being just as thrilling as we’ve come to expect from

BARBERSHOPERA: APOCALYPSE NO! @ Eden Court OneTouch, Sun 27 Mar A barbershop quartet with three guys and a gal who formed back in 2007 and have not only won rave reviews at Edinburgh Fringe and down in that London, but also performed their deft musical comedy on Radio 4. This is their third show, promising a scenario in which God summons four dastardly horsemen to unleash total destruction, but unfortunately Beth turns up instead of Death. Cue mistaken identity, four-part harmony and at least one hobby horse. Blending sharp comic timing with humour, physicality and, most importantly, a great story this could well be the quartet’s biggest hit yet. www.eden-court.co.uk

ART AN EVENING OF BURLESQUE @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Fri 01 Apr

VARIETY / MUSICALS

THEATRE

Ooh la and most definitely la! You can’t have failed to have noticed the resurgence of burlesque in recent years, even if Cher’s atrocious film on the subject appeared to completely misrepresent the spirit and sassiness of the genre. Nevertheless, the underground burlesque scene continues to grow and TV shows like Boardwalk Empire look set to further strengthen interest in the whole showgirl theatricality thing. There’s actually a thriving scene in the Central Belt (maybe they should rename it the Suspender Belt) with places like Ministry Of Burlesque and Club Noir attracting acolytes from all over the world, including the art form’s figurehead, the magnificent Dita Von Teese. And now Burlesque is coming to Strathpeffer with a show direct from London’s West End, incorporating old school glamour, style and pure sexiness - no sleaze just tease. Add sporadic injections of humour, magic, fabulous music from across the decades and an abundance of theatrical treats, and you have a spiffing night out, taking audiences from burlesque’s music hall roots to the present day. The final line up is not yet decided, but you might just catch the likes of Hotcake Kitty, Slinky Sparkles (“the cupcake cutie”), Marianne Cheesecake (is this a burlesque show or a bakers’ day out?), Amber Topaz or the phenomenal Kalki Hula Girl (check her out on YouTube at tinyurl.com/28uv98). And on top of all that there’s the deadpan Piff the Magic Dragon and his pup Mr. Piffles. Excellent stuff. www.strathpefferpavilion.org

INVERNESS OPERA: SOUTH PACIFIC @ Eden Court Empire, 30 Mar-02 Apr Formed way back in 1925 (with their first show being The Mikado performed in the Old Central Halls Picture House) Inverness Opera have been putting on productions ever since and for their latest show they turn to one of the most popular of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s creations. Inspired by the Pulitzer-Prize winning novel “Tales of the South Pacific” by James A Michener, it was actually a ground-breaking work in terms of looking at racism and women’s roles in the military, cleverly brought into the public consciousness through a rather wonderful love story and top notch tunes like Happy Talk, There Is Nothing Like A Dame and I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair. Sasha Devine plays the young naval nurse Nellie Forbush, while Martin Anderson takes on the role of Emile De Becque, the rich planter with whom she falls in love against the backdrop of war in the South Pacific islands. http://www.invernessopera.co.uk/

LA BOHÈME @ Strathpeffer Pavilion, Fri 08 Apr One of Puccini’s greatest and most popular operas, telling of the tragic love between the poet Rodolfo and the seamstress Mimi and perhaps doing more than anything to cement that notion of late nineteenth century Paris being full of artists in garrets and waifs dying of consumption. The music is ravishingly heartbreaking and should provide a fine introduction to Opera Bohemia, a new Scottish company who are already attracting critical acclaim for their vibrant performances. CATRIONA CLARK is Mimi and ALISTAIR DIGGES Rodolfo, among a strong cast showcasing burgeoning new talent. Very much a company to watch and an opera to send your emotions spiralling all over the place. 1EATING OUT:

The Review: ZIZZI 20 BRIDGE STREET INVERNESS 01463 237735 Though there aren’t any statues to them around the land just yet, there’s a quartet who’ve probably done more than any to ensure that Italian cuisine is regarded as being just as exciting, inventive and delicious as its more establishment French cousin. The first three you may not have heard of, but without Ruth Rogers, Rose Gray and Gennaro Contaldo, the fourth member of the quartet would not have been able to make such an unprecedented impact. Gray (who died last year) and Rogers were responsible for London’s River Cafe, a groundbreaking enterprise that took Italian rustic cooking and made it truly modern, gaining a Michelin star and half a dozen best-selling cookbooks. Contaldo, meanwhile, ran the now defunct Passione restaurant, introducing a whole range of regional cuisine, particularly

from his native Amalfi coast. And the all-important fourth member of the quartet? Who else but the ubiquitous Jamie Oliver, whose most recent cookbook has broken all sorts of best-seller records. It was at the River Cafe with Gray and Rogers that Oliver first worked as a sous chef, his passion for the cuisine noted by a passing camera crew. Contaldo first mentored Jamie at another seminal gaff, Neal Street Restaurant and remains close to his protégé to this day. It may be the Cockney chef who gets all the attention, but without the other three, Italian food in Britain might still be stuck in the time warp that trapped it up until far more recently than you might imagine. As well as the cookbooks, Oliver has taken his evangelical stance to creating restaurants themselves, first with his philanthropic “ Fifteen ” enterprise and more recently with a fledgling eponymous chain that recreates his vision of Italian country eating in modern

surroundings with wood-fired ovens, freshly made pasta and the like. And he’s getting good reviews for it, which is perhaps a little unfair on Zizzi, which has been doing something very similar since way back in 1999, when it opened its first branch in London’s Chiswick. Since then they’ve expanded spectacularly, the chain now encompassing over 100 restaurants around Britain. They’ve got a very definite mission statement –insisting that “...our restaurants are run the Italian way – passionate and homely, with a little flair. Each one’s a bit different in character, architecture, age and feel; think Robert De Niro with a regional accent. And each one has a distinctly local feel. After all, it’s the people that make the restaurant, the staff and the customers. Our philosophy from the start has been the same - you can taste when someone loves what they do. Wherever you are, something you can always be assured of is a warm welcome.” When they opened the

55

Inverness branch last October, it was that wealth of experience and refreshingly well thought out vision of what they wanted the place to be that ensured almost immediate success. With a prime location in that vast glass-walled corner plot down by the river, there was never much doubt about it having the best views in town, but as the failure of the previous incarnation in the same spot, Peat, showed, sometimes you need more than merely nice views out of the window to make a place work. That said, plenty of care has been taken with the space. Four local themes have been the inspiration behind the design of the place: the historic River Ness, boats, whisky distilleries and Macbeth. The Zizzi people asked Katy Thomson, a talented recent graduate from the Edinburgh College of Art, to create a large scale illustration which has become a unique feature of the restaurant. The other local themes have been translated into design features. A large wooden ceiling raft that is splintered at one end to replicate old boats, light fittings that look like buoys and a rope and

56

pulley feature in the window. The contour lines of the Highlands and Lowlands are detailed through Ordnance Survey maps on the ceiling, whilst copper pipes throughout the restaurant give a nod to the famous distilleries. Clean white spaces and an open kitchen dominated by the huge pizza oven provide a “look” that’s maintained throughout all Zizzi’s branches, but it’s good to see the incorporation of the aforementioned site-specific twists. And right from the moment you enter you can see it’s a well-drilled operation, guided to your table by cheery waiting staff, presented with a menu and orders taken for drinks all part of a seamless choreography. “Have you ever eaten at Zizzi before?” enquires our waitress, asking whether we’d like her to explain what it’s all about. For a moment we imagine this might mean a crash course in identifying and using cutlery or such like, but in fact it’s a perfectly reasonable opportunity to point out the main options on a dauntingly huge menu. At the heart of proceedings are, of course,

the pizzas, traditional round varieties, folded over calzone and the range of “Rustica” ones, gargantuan rectangular affairs. But then there’s also over a dozen different pasta dishes, a selection of risottos and some imaginative meat and fish. That’s not to mention more starters than you can shake a bread stick at, loads of salads and an extensive list of desserts. Scarily, almost every single thing on the menu sounds very appealing indeed, immediately throwing us into a tizzy of indecision. Just days earlier, a pal had been in after work and sampled the Rustica Primavera, the rectangular pizza topped with aubergine, artichoke, peppers, goats’ cheese, mozzarella, olives, tomatoes and pesto. He’d pronounced it the finest pizza he’d ever had in Inverness, “much more like something you’d get in Italy than all those cheese-loaded ones you get here”. A rousing seal of approval and one which left us free to explore at least some of the other options on offer. For starters I had Calamari, something that’s always a test

of not just a chef’s prowess, but also a kitchen’s efficiency. If they’re either overcooked or left hanging around too long, by the time they get the table they really can be like eating shavings from a tyre, except worse. These, however, were a treat. Served in a faux-newspaper cone inside a dinky metal bucket, they were accompanied by a fine garlic dip. And the squid rings themselves were perfectly cooked, wonderfully tender with still-crisp batter. My companion had Angelo’s Mussels. Well actually, he had his own mussels, but this presumably was the chap Angelo’s recipe, a sauce-cum-soup of tomato, white wine, onion, chilli and garlic. Again the cooking was spot on and tasty, but it was felt that a bit of bread would have been nice to mop up the ace sauce. For mains, my final choice was still being made between claiming I was ready to order and words tumbling from my mouth. Linguine with King Prawns? Pan Fried Sea Bass? Pumpkin and Pancetta Risotto? I plumped for Pollo Prosciutto, chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto ham, cooked in white wine, butter and vegetable stock and served with “Tuscan potatoes” and green beans. The resulting dish was perhaps a little stingy looking and the so called Tuscan potatoes turned out to be just sautéed spuds. No complaining about the fabulously moist chicken however, full of flavour

and with its salty ham jacket and rich buttery sauce, a nigh on faultless combination. Obviously we weren’t going to eat here without sampling the pizza in at least some shape or form and my companion went for a Sofia, as with so much else on the menu, something you’re unlikely to have experienced anywhere else in town before. This one has spicy chicken, pepperoni, roasted sausage, chilli and rosemary, an enticing combination, but perhaps even more important is the quality of the pizza itself. Thin and crispy, but with that natural, light springiness that only comes from the best quality dough, it also reminded us that a pizza is meant to be an integral part of a combination of fresh, tasty ingredients, rather than (as is so often the case) a receptacle for cheese. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with the latter and sometimes, when you get the hankering, nothing else will do, but it’s at Zizzi that you get to experience what pizzas are really like back in Italy. And these are absolutely tremendous. Puddings were just as impressive, with a range of old favourites and more original offerings. We were particularly taken by the idea of Grissini Chocolata (“Sweet crispy dough sticks drizzled with honey and pine nuts, served with a hot chocolate dip”), but decided to leave that for another day. Instead I tried their take on Tiramisu

which, although it looked like it had been bought in, was a nice enough version that packed a powerful espresso and liqueur kick tempered with mascarpone and cocoa. Restrained rather than excessively indulgent and all the better for it. My companion had Torta Zizzi, presumably something of a house speciality. It turned out to be almond based plum and fig tart topped with pistachios and icing sugar. Served with gelato (ice cream), a whole range of which is also available for dessert, it provided a typically accomplished end to a great meal. Zizzi has only been open five months and yet it’s invariably healthily full and this even in the tourist off-season. And it’s not cheap either (although there are a range of offers - some advertised online- and takeaway deals that work out pretty good value), so why such popularity? It comes down to that combination of great food, friendly surroundings and an imaginative concept, confidently executed. They know what they’re doing, which might sound obvious, but is rarer than you might imagine. And it works very well indeed. That’s set the standard for any other chain thinking of coming to Inverness, but we’d be surprised if anyone else could pull it off quite so magnificently. Badda bing. If you don’t already have one, you’re going to look awfully last-decade when we’re all wearing ours, is all I’m saying. It looks exactly like the one I had in the 70’s but has a couple of very welcome refinements. One, a silky smooth quilted lining – which makes putting it on and taking it off an easier and, dare I say it, almost sensuous experience. And two, a sneaky wee zip hidden in the flap behind the toggles which perfectly keeps out any cold north winds that may be lurking. As you can probably tell I’m quite taken with my duffle and therefore it has, as my mum would say, not been off my back since I got it. Ironically, I can find no trace of that episode on what purports to be the ‘complete’ Jonathan Creek, but that’s by the by because I’m a fan of Alan Davies and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the rest of it. Or at least I had until I came to the episode where after co-writing a book on his exploits and appearing on TV talking about them, Jonathan gets himself a fan club. One day during an investigation he and his partner in crime Madeline (played by the excellent Caroline Quentin) are at some sort of village fete when Jonathan is invited to meet his fan club in a teepee set up on the village green. I think my shock and discomfort matched his as he entered the pointy tent to find a number of men around my age and build dressed in duffle coats and sporting long shaggy curly hair. KEN

Januar y is traditionally one of the quieter months for proper ty sales, so these figures are cer tainly an encouraging star t for 2011, however proper ty exper ts are still cautious with possible impacts from the government cuts still an unknown. Interestingly HSPC website enquiries for the month were up 23% on Januar y 2010. That indicates there are significantly more people this year who are actively looking

A propor tion of these enquiries therefore may represent pentup demand. The financial restraints on house sales also means that there continues to be record high numbers of proper ties on the market. HSPC currently has 1137 active proper ties on its register, up 25% on Januar y 2010, giving buyers plenty of choice.

HSPC sponsored athlete Mhairi Burns sends us an update on her progress towards her dream of competing in the 2012 Olympics in her discipline of Modern Pentathlon. As I write this there are 78 weeks until the star t of the biggest spor ting event in the world, the pinnacle event in an athlete’s career. As I sit recovering from a nasty running session there are 560 days until the Women’s Modern Pentathlon competition at the London Olympic Games. Approximately 2400 training hours (give or take a rest day or two) until I could be standing on a star t line to realise

my dream. On one hand it seems like it’s racing up on me and on the other it seems like a distant thought. Although the qualification period does not star t until the World Cup Final, Greenwich Park, London in July my Olympic bid star ted back in October. I spent my ‘pentathlon break’ in Melbourne Australia with a great bunch of Scottish Fencers par ticipating in the Commonwealth Fencing Championships. This was a wonder ful trip where I laughed a lot and enjoyed some time focusing on a single spor t.

Fencing is my favourite of the five spor ts that make up Modern Pentathlon, I get teased by the rest of the Pentathlon squad for this! I captained a ver y young, inexperienced Scottish Women’s Epee team to a silver medal in the team event where we faced a mature, heavily capped Australian team in the final. On our journey to this slightly intimidating final we knocked out Singapore and England. In the individual competition I finished a credible 4th. On returning from Australia I began preseason training. Modern Pentathlon is a summer spor t so winter is when we focus on gaining fitness and improving our skill base for the coming season. be a slog, especially pounding the roads of Strathnairn over Christmas in all temperatures and weather conditions. Even though I am a hardy Scot I don’t think I’ll ever toughen up to winter weather, instead I just layer up! The training volume and intensity over this period is huge and more than relatively hard, the aim is to push to new limits, to be stronger, to be faster; to just be better. I feel there is a small cloud that looms over the squad of eight girls I train with; the air seems slightly heavy. This feeling is a constant reminder that only two girls will collect that honoured Great Britain Olympic tracksuit and get the chance to realise our dream. A tough road to qualify is

Throughout the winter we compete in three trial competitions where the results compile a ranking list and team selection is made from this. I finished top in the first two and then 2nd in the third one which leaves me current top of the ranking list. I see this as step one on my journey to Olympic qualification. The next step is to gain some top 6 finishes in the up and coming World Cup

As always I am ver y grateful to HSPC for suppor ting me on my quest, it is a long road to an exciting dream.

Style tips for the coming season from Maggie Blyth at Maggie Blyth, Beauly When it comes to putting together a new season’s wardrobe, where do you start? In times of economic recession do we shop at the cheapest stores and buy more pieces that will last only one season if we are lucky or do we opt for value for our money by purchasing fewer, more expensive pieces that will see us through several seasons? To me this is a no brainer - always go for the best quality you can afford. It will be cheaper in the long run as pounds-per-wear is the key consideration when it comes to cost. Given that we are only going to invest in a few items this season what are the key pieces moving forward? Layering is back with a vengeance this summer and tunics over trousers or leggings (make them cropped for the sunny weather) are still a huge hit. Top them off with a shrug in cotton or cashmere to complete the essential package. The success of the Mad Men TV show has filtered into the fashion world in a big way this season and fifties style dresses coupled with little fitted cardigans are a fab look for any shape, but especially for girls with curves. Check out new designer BOMBSHELL - dresses called the Kirsty Allsop and the Nigella Lawson - need I say more? When it comes to colour anything goes this season, but the biggest stories are colourful prints and soft pastel shades with lashings of slate grey and cobalt blue. Whatever you decide to opt for this spring make sure you are getting value for money, not throw away items. And if you can only afford one item this season make it a dress - they are practical, feminine and sexy. (Bombshell dresses will be available at Maggie Blyth from March.)

Making the most of YOU. Benefits of Colon Hydrotherapy from Louise at AquahealthUK Colon Hydrotherapy is also known as colonic irrigation, enterolavage or colonic. This is a form of cleansing for the colon by passing several litres of filtered water through the colon with the use of specialised equipment. This is not the same as an enema as the enema only touches the lower colon whereas colonics treats the whole colon. The benefits of colonics are for flushing out faecal matter, mucous, toxins and some types of parasites. Colonics have been around for centuries, but what has changed is the type of equipment used. Much more professional machines are available and much more efficient. Sanitation is also vital to this process -we only use tubes, pads and speculums that are disposable. Waste is carried away through the tubes. During the treatment, if suitable, you may be given gentle massage techniques to the abdomen to help loosen impacted faecal matter. When removing large amounts of matter especially toxic matter this can lead to the alleviation of symptoms such as acne, and other skin problems, allergies, asthma, arthritis, bad breath, candidiasis, chronic fatigue, Crohn’s disease, leaky gut symptoms and many other ailments. A series of colonics will also help to retrain normal bowel movements and proper elimination therefore perfect treatment for those of you who suffer with constipation or sluggish colon; constipation causes a back up of pollution to the cells in the body and can lead to poor health. Colonics combined with herbal supplements greatly improve the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Colonics bring instant relief from bloating. A person can carry between 3 lbs to 40lbs of waste in

[ health • style • beauty • fitness ] the colon at any one time. First treatment last approximately 90 minutes, follow up treatments 60 minutes. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is also in high demand. This is a very gentle form of massage to release fluid by massage, we are not wanting to stimulate the system, we are looking to drain it. This can benefit individuals who seem to suffer regularly from common illnesses such as cold and flu, glandular fever, ME, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, migraines, sinus problems, hay fever and other allergies, pre/post-operative cases where the lymphatic system is impaired in some way, post cosmetic surgery and those with cellulite. It’s also useful for: People who lead sedentary lifestyles or those who want to reduce puffiness or swelling in areas such as legs, ankles and puffy eyes. Those with digestive problems and who are suffering from excess weight. Stress, anxiety and tension, skin conditions Before and after long-haul flights. Treatments last approximately 1 hour.

She quickly fell in love with the job and decided to continue training instead of returning to her degree. Now she has opened up her own therapy clinic with help from Business Gateway. Inverness Therapy Clinic based in Kenneth Street has been open since the New Year and with business already exceeding Lorna’s early expectations, she is delighted with her move into entrepreneurship. She said: “Over the last few years

I have been employed by other people and as a freelancer but I always wanted to open my own business. I did think that it would be later on but the opportunity arose towards the end of last year when I spotted a perfect location. 2010 was a big year for me; I bought a house, planned my wedding and then opened my own business. It was stressful but worth it. “I specialise in sports massages that are suitable for everyone not just athletes. But I offer a range of treatments from Indian Head Massages to Reflexology and Reiki. Lorna approached her local Business Gateway office and gained vital knowledge that helped her as she put her idea into motion. She added “The advice I received

was excellent, your adviser is just a phone call or email away.” MARK MACKINTOSH, Regional Development Officer, Business Gateway Inverness office said: “Lorna came to

us with a clear idea of what she wanted her business to be. She was aware that she didn’t have the business knowledge to go about getting it set up and that’s where we came in. Not only did we offer her advice and support but she took advantage of our free courses and we helped her to access a grant. The clinic is already busy and we hope that with our support she will continue to expand and develop.” Business Gateway provides practical help, advice and support for new and growing businesses.
