Rights & Leadership Awardee for 2023

Zala Ahmad has over 15 years of experience working in the field of international development, with a focus on education, human rights, and economic development. She is deeply committed to social and economic progress in her home country of Afghanistan and has a passion for rectifying social justice and gender equality through education and economic empowerment of Afghan women.

In 2021 Zala founded Safe Path Prosperity an organization in Afghanistan employing women in Kabul to sustainably manufacture washable menstrual hygiene products and educational materials for local distribution. She was also the founding director of the NGO HOLD Afghanistan, where she implemented programs in the field of girls’ education, women’s economic empowerment, and human rights.

About the Amel Zenoune-Zouani Rights & Leadership Award Honoring exemplary leaders promoting gender equality, the award is named for an Algerian law student murdered by fundamentalists in 1997.

Amel's memory reminds us of the sacrifices made to pursue equality, and inspires us to continue the hard work ahead.

Ilyse Hogue Past President NARAL Pro-Choice America Ilyse Hogue is a fierce advocate for justice and a leader, innovator and coalition builder across American and global progressive movements.

Ilyse, who has spent over a quarter century waging fights on behalf of humanity and our planet, served as president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, during which she helped transform the organization into a modern-day organizing and political powerhouse.

Ilyse made history when she became the first speaker to share her abortion story at the 2016 Democratic National Convention. In 2020, she coauthored a best-selling book, The Lie That Binds, on the history of the radical right, its authoritarian aims, and its reliance on white supremacy, misogyny and disinformation.

She is currently a Partner at Purpose, where she supports a global team of passionate changemakers and steers strategic planning and development.

IANGEL's Teen Information Project In collaboration with Berkeley Law’s Reproductive Justice Project, IANGEL developed a new curriculum to inform teens about their reproductive rights.

This program was presented to local high school students past spring, and is being developed and expanded for additional presentations this semester.

Gender apartheid is a crime against humanity On September 29, 2023, IANGEL joined jurists, scholars, public figures, and civil society representatives from across the world in signing a comprehensive briefing calling on the UN Member States to codify the crime of gender apartheid in the draft UN Crimes Against Humanity Convention. IANGEL supports Afghan and Iranian women’s rights defenders, and urges UN action to recognize institutionalized, systematized gender oppression for the crime that it is: apartheid.
