FROM THE

DIREC

n July 2018, I celebrated 15 years as Director of International House. When I reflect on that time and the achievements of our community I am very proud of where we are. Our alumni, when they visit us, are the litmus test for change with their comments such as 'beautiful gardens, I only remember dirt' and 'the buildings and rooms look so fresh and updated compared to my time'.

They acknowledge the changes to the physical structures such as I-Plaza, the dining hall minus the scoop room, the new and improved games room…but more importantly they want to check in that the heart and soul of IH, its culture, still remains. It’s about events such as Soirée, still having Senior Residents and the Student Club, chats and cooking in the common rooms, participating in sport (but not winning so much), volunteering, and those lasting friendships and connections.

I am pleased to say that we still have that same ‘feel’ and that is what makes it attractive to our new cohort coming each year. Whilst there is an element of fun in all that we do, we now focus more on academics, leadership and cross cultural activities. We remain contemporary to meet the challenges of the future.

My trip to SE Asia in April provided me with a wonderful opportunity to catch up with IH alumni, and many of the alumni were from my time as Head of College. Their stories of success be it professional and/or personal (many marriages, unions and families) instill in me such optimism of how life changing living at IH can be and is!

STUDENT CLUB PRESIDENT 2018

The IHSC provides all residents with the everyday events that make up the college experience, and it also provides residents with a wide array of leadership positions to develop themselves as individuals.

Membership to the IHSC is more than just a title – it’s a shared experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. My vision coming in as 2018 President was to provide every Housie with fond memories of IH through the events we offer.

We may not dominate sporting events but the Housie cheer squad is always top of the leaderboard for enthusiasm. First Semester also saw the return of the IH Boat Cruise which proved very popular amongst Housies old and new.

Following O-Week, we ensured that everyone was enjoying themselves by organising a variety of sporting, cultural events and competitions.

Whether you want to sing, dance, swim, run or just simply watch a movie and eat pancakes: all interests were represented. And since some of our events are part of an inter-college competition, the exec team was very pleased to see IH dominate

This year I am overseeing student club activities which started with our fantastic O-Week. The team made sure this week was packed full of games, daytrips and cultural evenings. The most popular activities included our in-house beachthemed party and the performance of our unique fresher dance at UQ market day! Our daytrip to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the nearby beach was also a big hit.

I truly believe that this continuous presence of engagement in activities contributes to the amazing atmosphere we have here at IH. Every Monday the college is engaged in debating and language classes, every weekend you can play a different sport and every other Tuesday there is a cultural evening relating to a different country.

That is the essence of why I enjoy being president here so much.

You can be who you want to be at IH. You can do whatever your heart desires and along the way you can meet people from all around the world.

Making that happen is truly rewarding.

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE I-HOUSE? Housies studying medicine or pre-med dined with special guests Professor Stuart Carney (Deputy Executive Dean & Medical Dean) and Dr Fabiola Martin (Head of MD Program Admission), as part of the IH Professional Series Program.

In August 2018, keen engineering residents attended the IH Faculty Dinner to meet UQ Heads of School and Industry Alumni for professional career advice and study recommendations.

Residents were also encouraged to introduce themselves and ask career or course questions.

Guests of Honour included: Professor Peter Halley Head of the School of Chemical Engineering Professor Simon Washington Head of the School of Civil Engineering Professor Ross McAree Head of the School of Mechanical and Mining Mr Peter Slaughter - Engineer & President of Brisbane Planetarium Rotary Club 2013-14 Mr Bruce Manser - Engineer and IH Fellow 2019.

The interactive IH Professional Dinners enable Housies to make new Alumni business connections and personally engage with UQ Faculty Senior Executives.

The evening was a delightful balance of learning and laughter, and proved a productive networking session for Housies.

The evening was a unique opportunity for residents to sit down with two leading health industry experts, as they shared 'real world' experience, knowledge, and insight about the global medical profession.

The saying goes, “It's not what you know, it's who you know” and in this era of social networking and a highly competitive job seeking market professional contacts count! To help our BEL Faculty residents get a head start on their future, IH hosted an interactive Professional Evening.

Housies were invited to I-House to network over wine and cheese with special guests including Alumni, industry executives, corporate partners (ANZ), and IH Board Members, with the aim of expanding our resident’s business connections through the global Housie Alumni network.

Additionally, the event featured an IH Young Leaders Alumni Panel, interviewed by Advancement Director, Ms Symantha Liu, and later opened to questions from the audience. The panel provided their top tips on navigating the job seeking market, the best resume writing and interview techniques, handling setbacks or difficult bosses, future study, and how being a Housie helped them in their chosen careers.

SCIENCE FACULTY

Professor Neil Menzies and Professor Peter Adams joined IH Deputy Director Mr Yohan Nair and Housies for a scrumptious dinner in April 2019.

Dinner was followed by a casual Q and A session with questions ranging from what was your most difficult research project to tips for making the transition from student life to an academic career.

The two engaging UQ leaders had Housies in stitches with funny anecdotes about their personal academic careers and shared sage advice on faculty courses and insight regarding the expanding global science industry.

Despite being so close to Easter and the mid semester break, Housies were keen to learn all they could and thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Inspiring the leaders of tomorrow In July 2018 International House and UQ combined resources to offer Indigenous secondary students the interactive InspireU workshops.

The partnership provides Indigenous teens with a tertiary aspiration-building program, and gives Housies an opportunity to mentor Indigenous high schoolers.

The program involves a series of residential camps themed around the professional disciplines of engineering, science, law, business and health sciences.

Housies give their mentees a taste of College life with a personal guided tour of IH, an afternoon of bonding activities and games, and host an Indigenous themed Bara Khana formal dinner.

The Housies delivered heartfelt speeches to their young mentees.

Fresher Minh, from Vietnam explained, “I’ve made some amazing new friends with the Indigenous high school students, they are amazing people.

I have lived in Australia for 5 months but I believe I got more Aussie culture in this one week learning about Aboriginal tradition and history. I am deeply inspired and impressed.”

Housie Daiki (from Japan) said, “I was very surprised how mature and strong the student mentees are and I believe you will all be great leaders. I will be waiting for you at IH next year, so you all better come."

Q. You decided to stay in Australia over the summer and pick potatoes, why did you decide to give it a go?

I wanted to make the most of my year abroad and needed to find some work to make ends meet and pay my tuition fees. I was planning on moving in with friends but, with no job leads in Brisbane, ex-housie Evan suggested farming in Bundaberg (his home town).

Q. Do the farms provide housing?

I stayed at a working hostel meaning that in order to live there you must be employed through them also. There were a wide range of farms and jobs you can be assigned to; I was assigned to work in the sweet potato packing shed the first day, and remained there the entire summer.

Q. Was potato picking difficult and what surprised you about the job?

The most surprising thing was how demanding it was. I received a wake up call within my first days in the shed.

You work at max speed for hours on end to fulfill all the orders. During my last three weeks, my coworkers and I were working 12-13 hours per day, and 5-6 days per week; so you can see how exhausted it can make someone.

Q. Did you go on your own or with a friend?

I had originally planned to go with my good friend and ex-housie Neffie but that didn't work out. I wanted to be able

EXPERIENCE to have this experience, alone or not.

Evan was able to pull a few strings for me at the farm and his parents were kind enough to open their house to me: cooking me dinner almost every night, fixing up a spare room for me on the weekends, and providing me with some terrific banter as well.

Although I was very frightened knowing I had to go through this crazy experience on my own, within weeks I was beyond thankful because it helped me grow extremely rapidly over a small amount of time.

Q. Did you make any friends while you were there?

Almost all of the backpackers at the hostel were on a working visa, therefore, I was able to meet some of the most extraordinary people from all around the world. Some of my best friends I made are from the UK and Japan, however, there were also a handful of Australian locals who dedicate their lives to this job.

Q. What have you learnt about potatoes?

I have honestly learned more than I feel comfortable with. I now critique sweet potatoes at every market I go to, and am usually disappointed with their poor quality. Although I have respect for the sweet potato as a vegetable, I will continue to loathe the taste.

I started my career working on multi-billion dollar projects in the commercial sector before redirecting my energy to community organisations.

I previously played a pivotal role in introducing lifechanging telecommunication services for deaf and hard of hearing Australians.

Today, I use my diverse experience in strategic planning, operations management and community engagement to oversee Happy Paws Happy Hearts and business partnerships for RSPCA Queensland.

Issue 2 - Paws in Need: There is increased demand on animal welfare shelters.

The RSPCA need regular volunteers, particularly during work-hours. The more animal handling time rescue animals receive the better their behaviour and adoption prospects. Happy Paws Happy Hearts alleviates both issues

by connecting the two groups together!

When I started Happy Paws Happy Hearts, I started witnessing two issues in need of a creative solution.

Issue 1 - Hearts in Need: There are growing numbers of people disconnecting from society. For many, social interactions can become few and far between and getting out of a home, facility or hostel can be daunting.

It is also difficult to find meaningful social experiences which restore self-confidence.

Alumna Michelle Law (2008) visited IH following her keynote presentation at NAAUCCON18 at UQ. Michelle, a freelance writer, for print, film, TV, and theatre, spoke to delegates about her experience of race, gender, and identity. Michelle’s work draws heavily on her life, including her time as a Housie.

I’m still in touch with a lot of Housies who now work in the same industry, which has been amazing in terms of networking. I only just had a work meeting in LA with another Housie from the US! Career Highlights: Speaking at TEDx SouthBank Women; writing my play Single Asian Female for La Boite Theatre; and co-creating, writing and acting in the SBS web series Homecoming Queens.

Why you recommend IH: IH is definitely a more chilled out alternative to more traditional options. I found that people were friendlier, plus I’m Chinese-Australian and the vibe at IH is more reflective of Australia and the world that I know, which is extremely multicultural and diverse.

Favourite IH Tower: C Tower, because it was where my brother and sister lived and helped form my first memories of IH as their youngest sibling.

Best holiday destination: Anywhere in Asia Last book you read: Staying by Jessie Cole Chocolate or Cheese: Chocolate. I only got into cheese as an adult. #AsianLife Favourite IH event: I loved Soirée!

How has being a ‘Housie’ helped your career life: Living at IH helped me gain a greater understanding of life on a global level; you were constantly surrounded by people from different countries and sharing stories about your families and cultures. It felt like a huge extended family, which I loved.

Brotherhood Brunch 2019 On a sunny Brisbane morning in May 2019, International House Alumni, Housies, Fellows, donors, family, and special guests gathered to commemorate the Brotherhood Brunch and IH Awards Program Ceremony.

Commencing with a beautiful alfresco brunch along I-Plaza, residents past and present compared notes on the Housie lifestyle. Proud parents travelled from far and wide to celebrate the awarding of scholarships and bursaries to Housies.

The 2019 IH Award recipients were: IH Way Bursary: Saki Maehashi and Audrey Reynolds IH Alumni Bursary: Benjamin Wang, Samadhi Baker, Sean Wong Director's Recommendation Scholarship: Annabelle Sharman and Meghan Ah-Nim In 2019, two of the key college corporate partners; Chartwells and Academy Services, further collaborated with IH by generously funding new scholarships to support residents.

The Chartwells Housie Scholarship was presented by State Operations Manager, Ms Jenny White to Housie Minh Quang Le. "This scholarship gives me more confidence in my academic life and I cannot express my gratitude enough. Your generous support will help me achieve my dreams."

Minh (from Vietnam) The Academy Services Scholarship is an extension of the daily partnership we share to provide a safe and clean 'home away from home' for Housies, and it assists ‘Housies’ with financial support. Service Manager, Mr Sandun Dewage presented the 2019 Scholarship to Jonathan Lau. "Living away from home can be challenging, but having this financial assistance gives me one less thing to worry about and will help me continue to thrive at IH. I could not be prouder to be a Housie."

The Jarrah Young Memorial Scholarship (JYM) was established by family, friends, and the IH community following Jarrah's tragic death (during a 2012 bus accident abroad). The former Housie called IH home between 2003 - 2004 and during her stay, Jarrah had a profound impact on peoples’ lives.

Jarrah’s father, Peter presented 2019 recipient, May Lisa Kung with the JYM Shield.

May says: being a Housie initially helped her beat any homesick blues because from the moment she arrived at IH, other residents immediately made her feel 'at home'.

May got involved in everything, especially as a keen sports' nut, she was willing to try different Housie teams and cheer squads in the ICC championships. May also served as 2017 Soirée convenor, 2018 co-sport convenor, 2019 C Tower Senior Resident (SR), and most deservedly May was awarded the JYM Scholarship, May 2019.

IH Honorary Fellows played a key role in the establishment, governance or administration of college; whilst others have played a significant role in the development of the culture and values of the resident body of International House; or have contributed greatly as dedicated alumni giving back to International House.

Mr Bruce Manser inducted 19 May 2019 Bruce first resided at International House in 1970-1971 while undertaking his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree which he completed with first class honours and received a University Medal. Bruce received his call-up papers for National Service which had been introduced by the Australian Government to provide a supply of soldiers for the Vietnam War. After completing National Service, he returned to IH and occupied one of the tutor rooms while doing a Master of Engineering Science degree.

Bruce was still in residence during the disastrous 1974 flood and helped with the cleanup. The bottom 2 levels of towers went under in the murky waters. Bruce met his wife Bev at Uni when the pair went on a blind date to the IH Ball. They have been together ever since. Bruce has a keen interest in engineering mentoring and has participated in many IH professional evenings for engineers. His main hobby in retirement is fiddling with electronics and blowing up a few transistors in the pursuit of further knowledge.

Dr Nguyen Duc inducted 19 May 2019 "Duccy", as he is affectionately known by his peers, is a treasured International House foundation Resident. For over 55 years from 1965 to 2019, Nguyen has made a significant contribution to both the initial development of the life and culture of the resident body at International House; and since then, has continued to keep the spirit alive, as one of International House’s most dedicated alumni. He has been involved in many ways; including as an IH Senior Resident 1969 – 1972, a 1965 Colombo Plan Scholar and founder of the first IH Student Club Shop in 1966. "Duccy" designed the first IH tie and Soirée program in 1968, and is an IH donor.

Each year International House presents a public lecture on the theme of “World Peace and Understanding� (P&U). The 2018 P&U lecture was presented by Mr Peter Varghese AO, Chancellor UQ, who delivered an insightful speech entitled, "Securing Peace in Uncertain Times".

Previous senior appointments include High Commissioner to India (20092012), High Commissioner to Malaysia (2000-2002), Director-General of the Office of National Assessments (2004-2009), and Senior Advisor (International) to the Prime Minister of Australia (2003-2004).

The evening commenced with a global banquet to celebrate the myriad of nations reflected by IH residents.

Guests enjoyed international dishes including; Bobotie (National dish of South Africa), Kartoffelsalat potato salad (Germany) and Trinidadian Lamb Curry.

Mr Varghese was educated at The University of Queensland, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, and received a University Medal in the area of history in 1978.

Later, Mr Varghese shared his personal experience and observations about changing geopolitical global dynamics, particularly in regards to the economic rise of China.

Mr Varghese became UQ Chancellor in July 2016. Prior to this appointment, his extensive career in public service spanned 38 years and included senior positions in foreign affairs, trade policy, and intelligence. He served as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (2012-2015).

He was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010 for distinguished service to public administration, particularly for leading reform in the Australian intelligence community and as an adviser in the areas of foreign policy and international security.

He received an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from The University of Queensland in 2013.

Soirée

2018

The annual Soirée mood refused to be dampened despite the gloomy weather, with fun, fabulous food, festival music, and furry Aussie animals all on the 2018 event program. Housies ignored overcast skies and sprinkles of rain to showcase their cultural diversity throughout the day.

On the food scene, home-grown favourites like Lamingtons were a hit, while spicy Vietnamese noodle boxes, tangy Tzatziki Greek Salad in Pita bowls, and German Bratwurst with Sauerkraut on crusty buns also proved crowd favourites. A selection of beers from around the world were popular as was the Japanese dessert, Shiratamako.

The IH Band kept the tunes coming and the atmosphere relaxed on G-Lawn. The wind threatened to knock over a Shisha tent on B-Lawn but somehow people crawled inside. Mini-golf and Giant Jenga kept little kids and even bigger kids (Housies) amused for hours. Residents performed traditional songs and dances from their birthland, including Polynesia, Japan and the New Zealand Haka.

Every year, the biggest highlight of Soirée is the Aussie Wildlife Exhibit and 2018 was no exception. Housies and other guests lined up for the rare opportunity to cuddle a wombat, hold a snake, or pet a lizard.

It’s the type of hands-on experience with Australia’s unique, cute, and sometimes not so cuddly creatures many people will only ever dream about.

O-Week 2019 I liked it because the IH execs made the activities fun while also keeping in mind not to cross certain boundaries.

There were always alternatives, which I thought was great and everyone was so welcoming. I made heaps of friends.

Why I Love being a Housie...

I enjoy the convenience of staying on-campus and also all the friends I've made because when you come to a new country sometimes you don’t know many people, but at IH you'll find a diverse community where you can quickly and easily make good friends and find study partners. Vegemite I haven’t tried it yet, I always see it sitting on the IH counter but I’m very scared to try it, but Tim Tams these are one of Australia’s very best creations.

COORDINATOR Hi, I’m Minh, the 2019 Cross-Cultural Convenor and Resident Activities Coordinator (RAC). My role as RAC is to further boost the cross-cultural life of International House (IH).

I’m from Vietnam but have been calling IH my Aussie home since 2018. Together with the help of many volunteers, this year has been packed with cultural events including:

The Chinese Lantern Festival | Casual language classes | French wine and cheese tasting evening | Vietnamese, Irish, and Australian Tabiat Selasa nights (Tuesday's habitual) | Cupcake decorating and still so much to come!

The more you put in, the more you get out and you will have precious memories as a Housie.

Japanese alumna 2005, Tomoe Yuasa brought her husband and 2 children back to visit her "Aussie" home.

"I love IH so much, I nearly started to cry when we turned the car down Rock Street. I made such good friends here, many I still keep in touch with. I can’t wait to show them all the photos I’ve taken and how things have changed, but also how it feels 29 the same wonderful place.”

The first stop on the koala express was Singapore with an alumni gathering on a chic rooftop bar in the colonial district. Hiromi Grϋnert (nee Nakajima) recalled:

“I stayed in IH for one year as an exchange student from Japan in 2001 and the experience changed my life.

I met wonderful people and had so much fun! Even after I left IH, I got to travel the world visiting many of the friends I met from IH. Above all, I met my future husband, Martin Grϋnert!”

In Hong Kong, Housies were treated to Michelin star rated Yat Tung Heen restaurant, in Kowloon.

Housie 2005-06 Yasmeen Busrai, remembers IH fondly: “Some of the best times of my life! Almost 15 years later I can still transport myself right back to my room in D Tower. Late nights, friendships that will last a lifetime. Still have lovely memories of endless packets of Mi Goreng, G-Lawn, Soirée, the little shop for snacks… thank you for the memories.”

The Koala Express rolled into Malaysia with another spirited alumni reunion turnout. Big thanks to all the enthusiastic Kuala Lumpur Housies who joined dinner host Dr Carla Tromans.

RENOVATIONS DEC 2018

In the 2018 Christmas break it was the self-catered apartments' turn for a makeover.

tables and dining settings for each floor as well as additional storage with a full height pantry and credenza.

The combined kitchen, lounge and dining areas were stripped of furniture and the painters moved in.

Walls were repainted a fresh white with charcoal trims to compliment the charcoal carpets.

Soft furnishings completed the look with cushions and artworks chosen in shades of navy and yellow.

All 36 new furniture was purchased including leather look lounges, coffee

New and returning residents have commented on how fresh and clean the new look is. "It is easier to keep things tidy now that we have more cupboards to put things in."

Ivor Cribb also had a facelift with brighter LED lighting installed.

The room was converted into a comfortable study space for Housies with funky collaborative zones and private areas created with partitioning.

H & I Tower bathrooms and Senior Resident rooms were also refurbished to round out the works for the year.
