he summer season has officially kicked off and that means plenty of outdoor events and activities will be heating up the South Florida social scene.

Dress up for a good cause at this year’s Journey of Hope Grand Finale Gala for Leukemia & Lymphoma 2016 Man & Woman of the Year. The culmination of this year’s candidates comes to an exciting climax as all fundraising dollars from the past 10-weeks is totaled and the winner in the Man and Woman of the Year categories is named! Each year, in communities across the country, dedicated candidates engage in an exciting competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) “Man & Woman of the Year” titles. Raising funds for LLS blood cancer research, the candidates compete in honor of children who are local blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. Every dollar raised counts as one vote and the titles are awarded to the man and woman with the most votes at the end of 10 weeks. And the Winners of the Burger Battle VII… Local restaurants win Best Burger Awards

B

urger lovers indulged in delicious food and fun at this year’s Burger Battle.

Over 1,000 burger aficionados attended the burger event of the year.

The RiverwalkFort Lauderdale’s Burger Battle VII, presented by the Pilgram Group, had a great turnout of burger enthusiasts.

It is the 7th year the event has graced downtown Fort Lauderdale and it keeps getting better. While the Joe Friday Band provided live entertainment all night, guests enjoyed tasty burgers, crisp fries from the Water Shuttle French fry bar and libations from bars serving Jack Daniel’s cocktails, Barefoot Wine, and beer.

Sixteen top burger masters competed and their burgers were rated on texture, flavor, use of condiments, bread selection, unique approaches, etc.

21st Annual Bank of America Wine, Spirits and Culinary Celebration Raised Over $175,000 for theMuseum of Discovery and Science

t was a charitable evening to remember,with over $175,000 being raised for the Museum of Discovery and Science.

The Museum of Discovery and Science recently hosted its 21st Annual Bank of America Wine, Spirits and Culinary Celebration. This amazing event showcased 36 South Florida restaurants, fine wines, spirits, and craft beers that were enjoyed by approximately 1,500 guests.

Event highlights included tastings from South Florida’s leading restaurants and a vast array of wines and spirits from around the world, courtesy of beverage sponsor Southern Wine and Spirits. There was a wide assortment of craft beers to taste, great prizes in the silent auction and a complimentary Riedel wine glass was provided to every guest.

Guests voted for their favorite restaurants and the 2016 “Peoples’ Choice Award” winners were:1st Place: Yolo Restaurant, 2nd Place: Gino’s Italian Market: and for the first time ever 3rd Place was a three-way tie with: Ilios, Kitchen 305 and Susie’s Scrumptious Sweets.

Las Olas Wine & Food Festival raises awareness for American Lung Association

record sell out of 2,600 attendees recently joined together to sip, sample, mix, and mingle with the American Lung Association at the 21st Annual Las Olas Wine and Food Festival.

The Annual Las Olas Wine and Food Festival benefitted the American Lung Association.

Presented by Breakthru Beverage, William Hill, Woodford Reserve, and New Amsterdam, this year’s festival got a fresh new look on the famous Las Olas Boulevard with 50 plus restaurants and 200 plus wines served.

New Amsterdam created a luxury lounge featuring Moscow Mules while Woodford Reserve hosted with Stache 1920s Drinking Den featuring signature bands in their speakeasy build out. DJ Irie hosted the main stage for the first ever Best Of Chef Competition.

Hosting sponsors included Cadillac, who created a luxurious car display, KURO, who featured signature rock n’ roll girls with some delicious pastries, and MercantilCommercebank who created a jazz lounge just for event guests.

Miami Heat’s Up and Down Season Comes to an End

T

wo years removed from abruptly losing the best basketball player on the face of the earth, and the Miami Heat are well past rebuilding and nearly back into title contention.

Most franchises in any sport would have trouble recovering from losing a player the caliber of LeBron James, but solid and stable upper management has once again proved to keep the Heat relevant.

After one year of missing the playoffs, the Heat rebounded nicely this season, capturing the Southeast Division crown with a 48-34 record and the 3rd seed in the Eastern Conference.

They were able to overcome a 3-2 series deficit to the Charlotte Hornets in the first round to advance the East semi-finals, where they ultimately lost a hard-fought series in seven games to the Toronto Raptors.

Two years after losing James, and the Miami Heat were a mere one game from reaching the Conference Finals against the very team that LeBron departed for.

Anything less than a championship is generally disappointing in sports, but you can’t discount what the Heat did this year.

They saw the breakout of center Hassaan Whiteside, who looks to become a franchise centerpiece for years to come. They developed their first and second round draft picks, Justice Winslow and Josh Richardson, into reliable rotation players, who have the chance of becoming more than that down the line.

They saw Dwyane Wade return to form and not deal with any major injuries this season. The franchise cornerstone played in 74 games, the most since the 2010-11 campaign.

Most importantly, they became relevant again and have a roster that has a lot of young potential on it for the future.

However, it will be a tough offseason for Miami as more than half of its roster will be unrestricted free agents. Most important is the pending free agency of Whiteside, who will likely command a max contract 24 • ITB • June 2016

on the open market. The Heat need to decide if he’s worth 20 million + a season and how they will be able to fill out the rest of the roster under the restraints of the salary cap.

In addition, Wade, Luol Deng, Amare Stoudemire, Gerald Green, Udonis Haslem and Joe Johnson are free agents that the Heat will have to make a decision on.

Regardless of how this offseason plays out, the Miami Heat had an excellent rebound season that everyone can feel good about.

Miami Hurricanes Baseball Set to Enter NCAA Tournament

T

he Miami Hurricanes Basketball team may have fallen short of the championship season, but the Canes baseball squad has a good opportunity to make up for that.

UM Baseball learned that they earned the No. 3 national seed and will host the NCAA baseball regional in Coral Gables.

The Hurricanes were only behind No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Louisville.

Miami will host FAU, Long Beach State and Stetson in their regional bracket, and will start off the tournament with a game against Stetson.

The six previous times the Canes have been named a national seed (top 8 teams), they have advanced to the College World Series.

Miami has already defeated Stetson once this season, a 4-2 victory at home in March and is 113-43 all-time against the Hatters.

The stakes are high in this double-elimination tournament, with the winner of the Regional facing the victor of the Oxford, Mississippi Regional (hosted by Ole Miss) in a super regional.

However, UM coach Jim Morris has his team prepared for a tough bracket, with FAU one of the best teams in the country this season. They were ranked as high as No. 13 by Baseball America and the Canes

split two games with them this year.

Regardless, the Hurricanes have a great chance of making history with one of their best rosters in recent memory. Watch out Miami, another title could be coming to South Florida.

Miami Marlins Hitting Their Stride

T

he Miami Marlins have been looking for a breakout season for the past three years. They have made big free agent moves and have developed young talent. They also happen to feature two of the most dynamic players in the MLB in slugger Giancarlo Stanton and ace Jose Fernandez.

However, the last few seasons have ended in disappointment and no playoff appearances.

That has the possibility of changing this season.

As of the writing of this article, the Marlins sit at 27-25 and just 2.5 games out of the Wild Card spot and 4.5 out of the NL East division race.

They produced a 7-game winning streak in April and won 11 out of 12 games to overcome their early season struggles and get right back in the playoff race.

Miami has been able to accomplish this with strong run support, led by Stanton’s 12 home runs and 26 RBI’s as well as great hitting from Marcell Ozuna, Justin Bour and Christian Yelich.

Then there is the ever-consistent pitching of their star pitcher, Jose Fernandez. Fernandez is 8-2, with a 2.53 ERA and 96 strike outs as of the writing of this article.

He leads the team in all of those pitching categories.

Throw in closer A.J. Ramos, who is second in the National League with 16 saves, and the Marlins have been able to finally produce some consistent winning.

It is still very early in a long, 162game season, but the Marlins finally seem to have mature and show they are ready to compete.

Hopefully, the Fish can become the third South Florida pro sports team to make the postseason this year. www.InTheBizMagazine.com
