Message from the Director The International Office (IO) provides professional support and advising services to international students and scholars at Northwestern University regarding their immigration and academic status in the United States. The IO is committed to providing quality advising services and supportive programming to students, scholars, and their dependents. Northwestern welcomed 1,322 new international students in summer/fall 2012. The top ten sending countries can be found on p. 5. The International student population increased in 2012-13 by 6%, which can be attributed to new academic programs in the McCormick School of Engineering and notable increases at the Kellogg School of Management. Overall, international students comprise nearly 16% of the total student body at Northwestern. For the first time, this issue highlights information regarding the international scholar population at Northwestern on p. 15. According to NAFSA: Association of International Educators and the IIE Open Doors Report, international students and their dependents contributed an estimated $21.81 billion to the U.S. economy in the 2011-12 year. Closer to home, international students and their dependents contributed just over $1 billion to the economy in Illinois. Northwestern international students and their dependents contributed over $101 million to the local economy. This reinforces the notion that international students not only bring a diverse perspective to the academic discussion, but also contribute significantly to the national, state, and local economies. Our goal is to help the international students, scholars, and Northwestern faculty and staff, navigate the many complexities associated with student- and employment-based visa classifications within the Northwestern community. Basic Information
There are 550 international undergraduates at Northwestern in fall 2012, up from 531 in fall 2011—a 3.5% increase.
There are 211 international students in academic master’s programs at Northwestern, the top 15 of which are in engineering sciences. (see p. 10)
Professional programs saw the largest increases in international students in fall 2012—there are 817 in professional master’s programs, and an additional 104 in professional doctoral programs at Northwestern. (see p. 12-13)
There are 938 students in doctoral programs, up from 922 in fall 2011—the largest international student population at Northwestern among all academic levels. (see p. 11)
The university welcomes additional international students each year as non-degree exchange students from universities around the world, and in other classifications—e.g. Center for Talent Development, Kellogg School of Management Executive Education, and others (classified as Other in the graph on p. 4)
For the second year, data indicates that 60% of the total population is male and 40% is female.
There are 503 students currently on OPT for whom the university (IO) must maintain contact and advise regarding post-graduation employment regulations (Optional Practical Training).
The IO also provides advising services and supportive programming to 599 dependent spouses and children of current international students and scholars.
The International Office provides service to 1,190 international scholars, researchers, and faculty in various employment-based visa statuses (e.g. H-1B, J-1 scholar, E-3, B-1, TN).

Increases in international students were noted at all levels. However, increases in both academic and professional level master’s programs experienced the largest growth— due in large part to new professional master’s programs at the McCormick School of Engineering and increases in the numbers of international students receiving immigration sponsorship at the Kellogg School of Management. New international students enrolling for the first time at a U.S. institution in fall 2011 increased 6.5% over the previous year. (Source: 2012 IIE Open Doors Report)

45% of international undergraduates are female and the remaining 55% are male. According to the IIE’s 2012 Open Doors Report, Illinois was ranked as having the fifth largest international student population in the United States at 35,920. The state experienced a 6.4% increase from 2011 to 2012, and Northwestern University has the fifth largest international student population in the state. 8

66 countries are represented by the international undergraduate population at Northwestern University. South Korea has remained the most represented country at the undergraduate level for the past six years, with China as second most represented. Northwestern welcomed 200 international undergraduates (including transfer international students) in fall 2012—an increase of over 11%. 9

TOTAL INTERNATIONAL SCHOLAR INFORMATION—2012-13 Northwestern is home to almost 1,200 international scholars from over 100 countries who are here to conduct research, teach, and engage in other academic activities. International scholars come on various visas for these purposes, the most notable of which at NU is the J1 visa (59%), followed by the H-1B visa (32%), the B-1/WB visa (7%), the TN visa (2%), and finally the O-1 visa (1%). Of the international scholar population at NU, some notable facts:
34% are female and 66% are male.
Nearly 27% brought spouses/ children with them to the U.S.
29% of international scholars come from China.
Approximately 21% are engaged in academic activities at the McCormick School of Engineering.
