Suffering In Silence No More: Official App For Thalassemia Patients Around The World To Be Released 1 January 2016, (Nicosia, Cyprus) Today, Thalassaemia International Federation (TIF) launches ThaliMe, an innovative disease management and private social networking Smartphone application for patients living with Beta Thalassemia Major. Thalassemia is a rare genetic disease of the blood which affects 7% of the world’s population. Patients living with Beta Thalassemia Major require frequent blood transfusions and face a host of other medical and social challenges in their lives due to this condition, most of which they need to face on their own. With the launch of ThaliMe, patients dealing with similar difficulties will be able to connect with each other, as well as manage daily tasks associated with caring for themselves such as medication tracking and appointment reminders. TIF has been working closely with Curatio Networks Inc to bring ThaliMe to patients all over the world. The ThaliMe app places patients with Thalassaemia in a community of their own where they can track their medications, monitor their treatment, and actively engage and empower one another while living the disease. TIF and its Executive Director, Dr Androulla Eleftheriou, a prominent leader in the field of thalassemia, have been heavily involved with the implementation of the ThaliMe app, overlooking the design and the implementation of the service. "We, at TIF, believe that patients who are empowered can live fuller, healthier, and longer lives. We believe that Thalime is a major step towards the realization of the goal of empowering patients living with this lifelong condition." said the TIF Executive Director earlier this week. In the coming months, with the official launch of ThaliMe underway, Curatio hopes to: ● Connect thalassemia patients with the help of patient advocates from around the globe ● Grow the user base and increase patient involvement in managing their disease ● Augment interaction level between patients, their caregivers, and doctors ● Release ThaliMe for Android users in order to increase accessibility to the app Serafina Sammarco, Founder and President of the Vancouver Thalassemia Society of BC, upon reviewing the app has said that, “[ThaliMe] is an outlet for patients to share information and feel safe without any judgement or stigma. The feeling that they’re not alone”. Kurtis Chow, a patient living with Thalassemia Major, joined the Curatio team early on recognizing the life changing potential that ThaliMe will have. “Growing up with a chronic condition isn’t easy. What I love about ThaliMe is that it not only takes care of the emotional aspect of the condition, but also helps patients become more responsible for their own health by keeping on top of medications and appointments”.
